The mission statement for the proposed Catwalk Event is

“A Catwalk Experience to Explore Your Senses” ‘Sense It’ is a catwalk show. It is an interactive and immersive experience that allows you to awaken all 5 of your senses. Using a mix of sensory enhancement and deprivation to play with the way you hear, smell, feel, see and taste, Sense It has taken different existing technologies and theories that have been used in science, medicine and art, to create an experience unlike any other. It provides Industry and the public with access to knowledge on areas that may have been ignored and brings awareness to areas that are not well enough explored or developed.

I M A G E CONCEPT

Sensory Play Typically, we have been told from a young age that we have 5 senses. The ability to touch, taste, see, hear and smell. This isn’t incorrect that we have these senses, but it turns out those aren’t the only ones we possess. The commonly held definition of a “sense” is “any system that consists of a group of sensory cell types that respond to a specific physical phenomenon and that corresponds to a particular group of regions within the brain where the signals are received and interpreted”. By enhancing or depriving any of these senses, you can create and experience that can range from driving you mad to expandng your mind.

Eidos is an already exisitng technology created by students from IDE Innovation Design Engineering, Royal College of Art and Imperial College. They have created a pair of masks that use off-the-shelf sensors and custom software to augment the vision and hearing of their wearers. Technology in the face mask lets users isolate and amplify audio signals of their choosing, the glasses display “ghosted” images of objects in motion. This can be expanded into an App. For this project it can be used to help control the senses sight and sound via an app. If the technology was developed and mixed with other technologies that I’ve previously researched such as the ‘Sensory Lollipops’, it would cover 4 out of the 5 senses for the event. The way this can appeal to the public is by making the masks immersive and fun. I am going to do this by creating faces and character to go on the front of the masks.

Sucking the high-tech candy creates vibrations on the tongue, which translate to the frequencies the eye uses to communicate with the brain. This induces a mind-stimulating experience where the brain is fed information that it can read as images. Eye Candy is available in six flavours with different effects, such as meditation and focusing.

The concept demonstrates how food can become much more than just a taste and texture, but a medium in which to interact with our emotions and thought.

Every guest will enter the catwalk by handing in their ticket. They will individually be shown to their cubicle, imitaing a sensory deprivation tank, and extreme isolation. Here they will find a mask in two pieces. One to attatch round there face, and one over there eyes. In this cubicle they will be supplied with a haptic tablet that will only have the ‘Sense It’ app on it. This app will allow them to control elements of senseory information. They will have the ability to enhance or deprive their senses at any time during the show. However, the exciting part is, randomly, they will be out of control, and their app will be controlled by someone else. The Eidos goggles and mask will be fused with the Sensory Lollipop. This will cover 3 out of the 5 senses; Sight, sound and taste. The cubicle will have different smells realeased throughout the different collections that resemble them. This covers the 4th sense; Smell. The final sense of touch is very simple. The changes in temperature will give the same affect as a sensory deprivation tank. They can also select the ‘Touch it’ page on there app, where they can feel textures that resemble the current collection on the haptic tablet.

OBJECTIVE: Design a catwalk space that allows for separate cubicles, so that each guests experience does not get disturbed by another. It will also re-create a sensory deprivation tank and imitate extreme isolation.

CHARACTERS

Creating characters for each mask is a fun way to get people involved. it will add to the guests entertainment whilst making the guests part of the set design, continuing with an immersive theme throughout the event.
