We are pleased to report that 2017 was an excellent year for LS3P. In this year of exciting momentum, continued strategic advancement, a heightened focus on design, and record-breaking success, we managed to soar to new heights. 2017 will also be remembered as the year that many of us experienced the total solar eclipse which passed directly over our Charleston, Columbia, and Greenville offices, uniting us all in awe of such a spectacular celestial event. Throughout the year, our “One Firm attitude was clearly evident. We came together in sharing our expertise, collaborating across offices, and caring for each other and for our clients. In a world which is seemingly more divided, it is refreshing to be part of a culture that is counter to that national trend!

Our internal touchstone for 2017 was “Design First,” a continuing initiative which places our attention where it belongs in a design firm. This principle held constant throughout the year and has become an important symbol of our increased focus on design quality. Inspired by our Alchemy team (our internal core competency board focused on design excellence) and fueled by each team member’s talents, we will continue to strive for design excellence and continuous improvement in our building performance, in our process, and in our results. Our Alchemy team led by Danny Adams (ILM) encouraged us all to “find the nugget” for each design, looking for that which is profound, authentic, and necessary within each project as we engage each unique client at the beginning of the design process. This approach, shared at a series of presentations firmwide, has led to some of our most transformative and inspiring work to date. We look forward to seeing the far-reaching impacts of these discussions as we fully implement these ideas firmwide.

DESIGN FIRST

RICHLAND COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT TWO INSTITUTE OF INNOVATION (CAE) HONORED WITH A LEARNING BY DESIGN AWARD, AN ENGINEERING NEWS RECORD AWARD, AND TWO ASSOCIATED BUILDING CONTRACTOR AWARDS. This 212,200 SF facility dedicated to educational innovation provides a leading-edge, multi-generational learning hub for the Sandhills community. Centrally located for ease of access for the growing Richland School District Two, the Center combines areas for community use, a student innovation center, District offices, a conference center, and a branch library. As a joint-use institution, the building offers educational spaces throughout to encourage engagement and collaboration. The exterior conveys an industrial, high-tech appearance expressing the state-of-the art technology and programs offered inside. The main entry opens to a large central spine that separates the more public areas from the more secure areas of the building. With a 36’ high dividing wall with a continuous clerestory, the space is flooded with natural light. Various openings in the wall visually connect the learning spaces and frame views of learning activities from one area of the building to another. Team Members: Mary Beth Sims Branham, Charles Hultstrand, Allen Taylor, Jason Likas, Clinton Riddle, Rohitkumar Patel

CU-ICAR ONE RESEARCH DRIVE (GSP) HONORED WITH AN AIA SOUTH CAROLINA AWARD. One Research Drive houses flexible research and office space for innovators and entrepreneurs supporting the region’s automotive cluster. Located on a prominent entry into the CU-ICAR campus, the building expresses the program’s technology focus with sleek metal, glass and concrete facades. The transparency of the design visually connects the advanced technologies inside the building with the adjacent pedestrian plaza. Team Members: Scott May, Chuck Hultstrand, Chris Stone, Brian Gulden, Amy Blankenship, Jessica Burgess

CLOVER MIDDLE SCHOOL (CLT) HONORED WITH A NATIONAL TERRAZZO & MOSAIC AWARD. The new Clover Middle School serves 900 students with a layout organized into individual “houses” for each grade level with classrooms, science labs, and a computer lab. Flexible learning spaces, integrated technology, collaboration spaces, and colorful educational graphics all help to create an engaging and inspiring learning environment. The campus includes an 8-lane track; football, baseball, and softball fields; outdoor basketball courts; and a fieldhouse. Team Members: David Bellamy, Vincent Spencer, Jonathan Nathan, Roger Attanasio, Ariel Cohn, Rohitkumar Patel, Mari-Ann Williams, Kate Ruck, Jason Likas

ARTILLERY BAR (SAV) HONORED WITH A HISTORIC SAVANNAH FOUNDATION AWARD. Artillery Bar’s iconic 1896 storefront was built by the Georgia Hussars for artillery storage, and its original exotic Venetian Gothic design with spiraling terra cotta columns and arches adorned with pinnacles and quatrefoils lend a distinctly elegant quality to Savannah’s Jasper Ward neighborhood. In its most recent revival, the building is an upscale cocktail bar. Team Members: Neil Dawson, Brenda Pearson

CU STARBUCKS AT COOPER LIBRARY (GSP) HONORED WITH AN AIA GREENVILLE AWARD. This café renovation at Clemson’s Cooper Library turned an existing café space into a licensed Starbucks store. The design opened large sections of existing walls to connect the new space with the library lobby, added a new loft and steel stair to increase seating space, implemented specific branding requirements, created a new office for University food service staff, and provided single-user restroom. Team Members: Scott May, Jack Rincon, Amie Blankenship, Jessica Burgess

WAKE TECH COMMUNITY COLLEGE HEALTH SCIENCES (RDU) HONORED WITH A SIR WALTER RALEIGH AWARD. Wake Tech’s Health Sciences Building provides state-of-the-art allied health training space for the college, featuring framed views of the stream buffer and preserved forest and blended indoor/ outdoor spaces. The design showcases the technologically advanced programs and research functions housed within, with program spaces including a teacher resource center, “smart” classrooms, STEM labs, and faculty support spaces. Team Members: Chris Roberts, John Calvert, Chad Wylie, David O’Shea, Anne Bean, Jessica Cochran, Renee Wells, Sarah Corbitt, Becky Smith

GREENVILLE TECHNICAL COLLEGE - CENTER FOR MANUFACTURING INNOVATION (GSP) HONORED WITH AN AIA SOUTH CAROLINA AWARD AND AN AIA GREENVILLE AWARD. The CMI, a new leading-edge center for advanced manufacturing technologies, supports education, research, and entrepreneurship while training a highly skilled workforce. The building is the first on a new International Style campus, and is designed to establish a distinctive architectural character and serve as a visual icon of modern manufacturing. In addition to instructional spaces, the facility features prototyping space for manufacturers and incubator space for start-ups. Team Members: Cindy Benjamin, Chuck Hultstrand, Jack Rincon

101 N. THIRD (ILM) HONORED WITH AN AIA WILMINGTON AWARD. Serving as the home of our Wilmington office, this five-story downtown office building addresses a highly visible corner with a prominent entry and human-scale detailing. The design complements other significant downtown buildings with historically compatible materials which are translated to a more contemporary expression. LS3P’s office is furnished with low, open workspaces along the perimeter to encourage collaboration while allowing natural light deep into the interior. Team Members: Chris Boney, Laura Miller, Danny Adams, Renee Wells

LIVE OAK BANK (ILM) HONORED WITH AN AMERICAN ARCHITECTURE PRIZE AWARD. Wilmington’s Live Oak Bank campus continues to attract national (and international!) attention for its design excellence and superior workplace environment. The cypress-clad buildings integrate the buildings into the coastal landscape, and the transparency of the design maximizes natural light and views for every employee. The buildings, all designed by LS3P, are connected by walking trails, decks, and covered walkways. Team Members: Chris Boney, Laura Miller, Danny Adams, Daniela Ayers, Dean Webb, Renee Wells

SONEPAR (CHS) HONORED WITH AN ASID CAROLINAS AWARD. The new Sonepar headquarters is providing substantial benefits for the company in branding, collaboration, wellness, and employee engagement. As a branding device, a 3-D art piece wrapped with the company’s cable was installed in the entrance foyer, connecting iconic symbols from each office city location. Team Members: Cameron Wilson, Whitney Grove, Sarah Corbitt, Ben Anderson

ROSEMARY LANE RESIDENCE (GSP) HONORED WITH A CHRYSALIS AWARD. The three-phase renovation project revitalized an existing suburban residence that had fallen into serious disrepair. The intent of the renovation was to maintain the modern character of the building, while undressing and redressing the structure using current materials and methods. The design touched all aspects of the home, including interior, exterior, landscaping, and technology Team Members: John Edwards

CU-ICAR ONE RESEARCH DRIVE (GSP) HONORED WITH AN AIA GREENVILLE AWARD. One Research Drive’s steel superstructure supports a layered envelope of insulated metal panels, pre-cast concrete panels, and energy-efficient glass shaded by strategically configured perforated stainless steel screens. The building orientation takes advantage of diffuse light and views onto the plaza on the north, while striated insulated metal panel walls shelter the western exposure. Strategic angled vertical mesh panels to the east and south reduce glare and provide shading while maintaining transparency. Team Members: Scott May, Chuck Hultstrand, Chris Stone, Brian Gulden, Amy Blankenship, Jessica Burgess

AVIDXCHANGE (CLT) HONORED WITH AN EAGLE AWARD. This edgy new workspace for a fast-growing software company focuses on collaboration and communication for a nimble work flow. Anchored by a dramatic “stairitorium” space with integrated technology and a massive green wall, the open office environment features a wide range of flexible work areas, gathering spaces, and amenities. LS3P designed the building, which complements the built environment within Charlotte’s popular Music Factory development, as well as the dynamic interiors. Team Members: Nathan Daniel, Wil Drennan, Scott Ferguson, David Loy, Ryan Barkes, Goran Pogarcic, Rayo Daroowalla, Sivilay Xayasaene, Kyle Emme, Mari-Ann Williams

CAROLINA BAY (ILM) HONORED WITH TWO ABC CAROLINAS EXCELLENCE IN CONSTRUCTION AWARDS. Carolina Bay offers a wide range of senior living options, from expansive garden flat apartments with wide shared porches to assisted living and specialized care. Connectivity is central to the design, from hallways with natural light and outdoor views to walking paths which connect to the wider community. Multiple dining options, a wellness center, an indoor pool, and shared gathering spaces round out the amenities. Team Members: Chris Boney, Charlotte Townes, Dean Webb, Renee Wells, Mari-Ann Williams, Ariel Cohn, Chelsea Harrell

SECRET HOLLOW TRAIL RESIDENCE (GSP) HONORED WITH AN AIA SC AWARD AND AN AIA GREENVILLE AWARD. The owner of this house, an accomplished maritime photographer, wished for a home reminiscent of the simple boat buildings that formed much of the basis of his professional work. The result is an “architecture of resistance” in a planned development that prescribes strict design guidelines geared toward the traditional and picturesque. Rather than being constrained by these guidelines, the project draws upon the rich formal and material traditions of regional vernacular buildings characterized by modesty, simplicity and clarity. Team Members: John Edwards

ARTILLERY BAR (SAV) HONORED WITH AN IIDA AWARD. The Artillery’s swanky interiors feature a marble bar with two unique, oversized bookmatched marble slabs; a ceiling adorned with herringbone tile; custom pendant lighting; and historic woodwork. This former munitions storage space now houses a wine cellar. Team Members: Neil Dawson, Brenda Pearson

SONEPAR (CHS) HONORED WITH AN IIDA AWARD. The new North American headquarters for this familyowned company based in Paris, France, provides space to showcase a wide range of the company’s products. The new sustainable workplace speaks to a multi-generational workforce and creates a collaborative environment. Dynamic lighting, a unified materials palette, and custom art combine to create a workplace which reflects the client’s unique identity. Team Members: Cameron Wilson, Whitney Grove, Sarah Corbitt, Ben Anderson

RIVERLIGHTS RIVER HOUSE (ILM) HONORED WITH AN AIA WILMINGTON AWARD. River House, a bar and restaurant sited to capture uninterrupted views of the Cape Fear River, welcomes in maritime breezes and ephemeral coastal light conditions. To maintain a close connection to the serene natural riverfront site, wide wraparound porches and garage doors opening into the restaurant space blur the lines between the indoors and outdoors. Deep overhangs provide shade, and the outdoor deck with rocking chairs and fire pit contribute to an atmosphere of southern hospitality to encourage relaxation by the water. Team Members: Chris Boney, Laura Miller, Dean Webb, Renee Wells

CURI ZUCKER FAMILY GRADUATE EDUCATION CENTER (GSP) HONORED WITH AN AIA GREENVILLE AWARD. Located on waterfront property at the old Charleston Naval Base, the Zucker Family GEC is a LEED Gold academic research institute dedicated to integrative approaches to restoration. As a nod to the site’s industrial history, the form and materials echo the history of stacked shipping containers. The building is elevated on a concrete podium which protects it from floodwaters, minimizes site impacts, provides a covered parking area, and creates an excellent vantage point for capturing views of the Cooper River. A transparent double-height cube anchors the southeast corner. Team Members: Scott May, Chuck Ciesar, Jessica Mason Burgess

SAV OFFICE ENJOYING SOME PADDLEBOARDING AS PART OF THEIR WELLNESS CAMPAIGN

Our Vision 2020 goal is to be the best architectural firm in which to work in the Southeast. We continue to look for ways to make LS3P a fantastic place to work. A few of our 2017 initiatives include: • Our focus on work-life balance flexibility • Wellness initiatives tailored to each office, with options including onsite fitness sessions, Wellness Wednesdays, free flu shots, CPR training, and healthy snacks • Our progress on health insurance rates which help hold down costs for staff and families • Our new mentorship program • A personal welcome and orientation to the firm of all new employees in their office by the CEO • Our strong support of community engagement • Our Caring site which supports employees facing challenges In 2017 we also initiated a new internal Leadership by Design fellowship program, which offered a focused view of the firm’s practice from a design leader’s perspective to LS3P’s emerging leaders. Ten team members (pictured to the right) formed this inaugural class, which met for three intensive sessions over six months.

LIVE WORK PLAY

2017 LEADERSHIP BY DESIGN FELLOWS

We filled two key leadership roles in 2017 which position us to take advantage of exciting opportunities in the years ahead. Darrell Puffer, our new Technology Leader, is having an enormous positive impact on the firm with an increased focus on technology supporting practice. His unique perspective and experience is helping us to streamline our processes and leverage our talent in new ways, which will propel us towards national leadership in the architectural field. Heather Pierce, our Human Resources Leader, brings significant expertise and has already strengthened our HR support systems and team. Implemented in 2017, our HR Team has helped us create a more meaningful Annual Review process, better manage applications for potential employees, and refine our compensation models. Our Alchemy team strives “to create a culture of design and actualize design leadership systems throughout the firm.” Alchemy serves as a firmwide resource for design inspiration, visualization, communication, and education. Chuck Hultstrand has led Alchemy for the past two years, we have achieved substantial success in terms of design awards, client satisfaction, and a growing portfolio of beautiful, high-performance building designs. As he rotates off as Chair, we are most appreciative of Chuck’s vision, leadership, and dedication to this effort, and we are endlessly thankful for his good nature and collaborative outlook. We are pleased to announce that Danny Adams will serve as the next Alchemy Chair. Danny’s design acumen is visible in award-winning projects such as Live Oak, IKA Works, and the CFCC Fine Arts Center, and we look forward to his insights as we continue to cultivate a culture of world-class design. Our Green Team is dedicated to sustainable design. For the past three years, Sarah Corbitt has led the Green Team, and as she rotates out of the position, we thank her for her dedication, expertise, leadership, and hard work. Sarah has generously served as a go-to firmwide design resource, and her efforts have advanced sustainable design and certification on a vast number of projects. We are pleased to announce that Devki Wright is now serving as Chair, and Matthew Santilli as Vice Chair. Devki is highly experienced in the K12 practice area, and is an active member of USGBC NC. Matthew works primarily in designs for higher education and single family residential clients, and is currently serving as President of AIA Greenville. Devki and Matthew bring extensive knowledge, experience, and vision to these new roles, and we look forward to their energetic leadership.

LEADING THE WAY

George Temple, our Executive Vice President for Business, has led efforts to create a leading-edge dashboard for data management along with Dawson Bessigner, Alex Jacobs, MIke Ditchfield, and Katie Robinson. In this era of Big Data, it is more important than ever to be able to mine and analyze large amounts of information; this dashboard has become an innovative and powerful tool as we use real-time information to guide our business and our practice. We have matured our Virtual Reality capabilities by deploying VR Experience Rooms in all eight offices while developing 3-D craftsmanship to improve the immersive quality of our VR. We have also expanded our 3-D printing capability beyond the Charlotte office to the Charleston office, and we have introduced a LIDAR building scanner that will help our teams capture existing conditions with higher degrees of accuracy in much less time. New software applications in the studios, paired with new multi-touch and digital ink devices, are shaping advancements in LS3P team collaboration, coordination, and visual thinking by means of digital sketching and coauthoring tools. These investments in technology at LS3P are building a seamless end-to-end digital workflow, allowing us to streamline the development of ideas into realization.

2017

INDIVIDUAL ACHIEVEMENTS

Caring for one another and our communities is one of our most important core values. In 2017, we donated over 6,800 hours to community organizations. Office teams participated in events supporting CANstruction, United Way, Habitat for Humanity, American Cancer Society, Activate Good, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, and others. Many of our team members dedicated their time to training our next generation of architects through career days, academic involvement with our architecture schools, or the ACE Mentor program. Still others volunteered with their local Chambers of Commerce, Rebuild Upstate, the Rotary Club, food banks, faithbased organizations, and so many other community organizations.

06 COMMUNITY CONNECTION

For Earth Day, our offices engaged in a friendly competition to lead community projects related to sustainability. The Raleigh office won the 2017 Earth Day trophy, working in collaboration with Raleigh City Farm on conceptual designs and presentation boards for a new community pavilion. RCF used our renderings for a very successful fundraising effort and grant writing process, and the pavilion is anticipated to break ground by Earth Day 2018. 2017 also brought us some difficult times, including a series of catastrophic hurricanes. In the wake of Hurricane Maria, we were heartened by the outpouring of support for Natallie Santiago’s family and community. Natallie, a native of Puerto Rico who works in our Savannah office, flew nearly 1,000 lbs of relief supplies donated by all eight of our offices to Puerto Rico and hand-delivered bottled water, canned goods, pet food, toiletries, and other critical items to those recovering from the devastation. We are so proud of Natallie’s swift and compassionate response, and of LS3P’s support in amassing and transporting these supplies. Thank you, most sincerely, to all who donated!

07 BY THE NUMBERS

We have grown from our origins as a one-man firm in Charleston to more than 320 employees in eight offices across three states; however, we remain true to our unique firm DNA. We compete against the best large firms in the country and the small firms down the street; we have deep regional roots with a national reach; we value high performance and work/life balance; our clients know us by our reputation as designers, and by our reputation for service; we excel by individual initiative, and by collaboration as a team; and we are respectful of the past, yet clearly focused on the future.

TESTING THE LIGHTS AT 300 SOUTH TRYON IN CLT

We enter 2018 with substantial momentum, and with optimism for another great year. Economic indicators indicate a brisk construction market, and we have a healthy slate of projects on the boards in all eight offices. Financials are sound, business processes are running smoothly, and our award-winning designs continue to serve our clients and our communities in transformational ways. We are exceedingly proud of our deep bench of talent, and we genuinely enjoy working together. As we develop our next generation of leaders, we strive to help each employee achieve his or her full potential. Building on our collective strengths, we will keep raising the bar for excellence, elevating our performance, and growing together as a firm. As we continue to strengthen our knowledge, expand our presence, and build upon our expertise across our practice areas, our diverse portfolio and conservative attitude towards firm finances positions us well to weather changes in any particular market. Though we live in an era of rapid change, we are resilient; we know that if we stay true to our heritage, our values, and our unique culture, we will not only survive any turbulence, but also thrive in our profession. All signs point to a successful and productive year ahead!
