The year 2020 will forever be the year that changed our lives; as individuals, LS3P colleagues, and members of humanity. We were all besieged by a pandemic, challenged by social unrest and the need for change, and compelled to think and act differently to continue to find prosperity in the face of struggle and strife. There is much for which to be grateful. There is sadness. There is hope. There is resiliency. There is evolution and a renewed commitment to health, relationships, and the value of life.

Letter from the CEO

We also have reason for great pride in this team that we call LS3P. We all found ways to reinvent, renew, and refocus. We demonstrated new ways to work with clients and each other, maximizing collaborative engagement through multiple channels and leveraging technology in creative ways. We led with Values, were inspired by the tenets of our Vision, and were guided through 2020 by our Evolution25 plan. We aspired to more development for innovation, design excellence, and collaborative expertise. We all contributed from 8 offices and 340 offices. The results speak for themselves: deepened community engagement, record design awards, innovation through the 1+ organization and academic partnerships, elevated quality, progress toward high performance building design, commitment to shared expertise and practice areas, a more empowered brand, a focused commitment to diversity and inclusion, and a team that is better prepared than ever to charge towards 2021 with great momentum and optimism for continued success. The year 2020 will forever be the year that changed our lives. Thank you for supporting each other and continuing to look to the future with the promise of the best yet to come.

2020: A Year Like No Other Most years have a familiar pace. January is brisk and full of plans; the spring brings a season of steady, pleasant work. The summer eases just a bit, and everyone takes turns taking vacations. We’re back at full throttle for an industrious fall, and the end of the year comes with both joyous celebrations and a rush of activity to get our goals for the year over the finish line. Along the way we enjoy the predictable rhythm of events, both personal and professional, that serve as mileposts: birthdays and holidays, industry conferences and monthly staff meetings, the NCAA tournament and summer music festivals, recognitions, and even the annual review process. The extraordinary events of 2020 upended those familiar cycles. January proceeded as expected, and on February 3 the firm was delighted to welcome Marc Marchant as our new CEO. By the end of that month, the whole world was talking about the rapidly spreading “novel coronavirus” causing COVID-19. Exponential case growth led LS3P (and everyone else who possibly could) to transition to work-from-home in mid-March; at the time, nobody had any idea whether the crisis would last days, weeks, or months. Every news cycle seemed to bring a new level of urgency as COVID triggered a spring economic crisis, mounting tensions led to a summer of

civil unrest, and the fall ushered in the most dramatic election season in modern history. Through the chaos of a turbulent year, we leaned on the values which have carried the firm through challenging times for over five decades, and we leaned into our vision. Our work locations changed, but our commitment to our clients and communities remained unwavering. The “pivots” that 2020 required may well become the bar against which all future pivots will be measured. Possibly the most used, and overused, word of the year was “unprecedented,” as we seemed to lack adequate vocabulary to describe the cascade of remarkable and historic events. While we all hope to be able to retire that word as soon as possible, we should first remember all the ways in which this unprecedented year made us stronger.

UNPRECEDENTEDTeamwork Our “one firm” attitude quickly became apparent as every team kicked into high gear for an unexpected transition. The ExCom and leadership teams in each office monitored the situation and implemented plans to keep our teams safe and our projects moving forward, while project teams maintained close communication with each other and their clients. The Technology Team worked nearly round-the-clock to get every employee connected and working from home with astonishing speed, while the HR and Communications teams worked to get real-time information to our teams in a rapidly evolving climate. During the rapid shift to WFH, individual team members and their households faced their own challenges: child care, distance learning, worries about the safety of family and friends, and the side effects of too much isolation or too much togetherness. We had to solve a lot of problems- big and small- in a hurry, in the midst of a torrent of grave news and massive disruptions. Through it all, our team embraced a “One Firm” attitude. We pulled together to keep projects on track, take care of our clients, and take care of each other.


UNPRECEDENTEDOutreach This year, we held fast to our commitment to create architecture that enriches communities. Our project teams and Practice Advancement Centers reached out to clients to help them plan for safer reopenings. Our offices provided food and urgently needed items to healthcare workers and local nonprofits, and our team members found ways to serve and contribute, even while “safer at home.”

Our commitment to the 1+ organization, a nonprofit which encourages firms to donate 1% of their staff hours to pro bono work, led to over a dozen projects in 2020. Some were small and local, and some were large and far-reaching. A collaboration with GoDesign, a Savannah-based nonprofit, led to a design for a Women’s and Children’s Health Center in Uganda, and a relationship with Mazzetti led to multiple projects with the WHO assisting healthcare facilities and mentoring teams in Burkina Faso, Brazil, Haiti, Yemen, Chad, and Ethiopia. Every project gave us a chance to do what we do best: design solutions to solve problems at all scales, build relationships, and make our communities stronger.


UNPRECEDENTEDAccomplishments As always, our team made us proud this year, and the pandemic did not slow people down in their pursuit of professional, personal, and community excellence.

Hurricane Resilient Hospital AIA National Award for Environmental Design Excellence; AIA North Carolina Merit Award in the Unbuilt Category; AIA Wilmington Merit Award After Hurricane Florence, a major regional hospital system commissioned a study of resilient hospital design to explore innovative strategies to inform future facilities. The research and holistic design analyzed form, façade, systems, efficiency, and the patient experience to create a more resilient design and better places for healing. LKQ Nashville TCA 29th Annual Tilt-Up Achievement Award This 104,000 SF headquarters for an auto parts company combines aesthetics and function while providing space for 600 employees. Monteith Construction New Office AIA Wilmington Merit Award; Wilmington Downtown Inc. Benjamin Halterman Award Outstanding Preservation & Renovation Monteith’s new headquarters repurposed a historic building in the heart of downtown, honoring the building’s history and aesthetic while mixing the old with the new. The renovation retained the building’s original exposed brick and hardwood floors, celebrating the imperfections that give these materials character over time. UNPRECEDENTEDCollaboration The shift to a hybrid work environment cemented something we already knew: LS3P is outstanding at collaborative engagement. Whether across state lines or just across town, our teams seamlessly pressed forward with both project work, and projects to advance the firm. Our PACs strengthened relationships and expanded our thought leadership and expertise, while our Knowledge Teams spearheaded new initiatives in the quest for continuous improvement. The Marketing Team dissolved all borders and transitioned to a “creative agency” model, with team members working with all offices and new subteams focused on expanding firmwide resources. Cross-office collaboration has always been part of what we do. In a hybrid work environment, this type of collaboration became a natural extension of the process: looping in colleagues for a Zoom meeting or Teams call makes it easy to bring the right people to the table for each task. Bonus: it’s been great fun spending more time with folks from other offices, even if it’s onscreen.


Knowledge Team Highlights The Advance team initiated monthly CA round table discussions, which have proven to be very useful and engaging, and created a Post Project Evaluation program. The team has also updated information such as construction subsystems, wall/partition types, general notes, legends, and other details which have been included in 2020 Revit templates; and uploaded details for brick cavity walls, balconies, parapets, and other building conditions to UNIFI. Advance continues to develop standard details, and has begun to develop a new LS3P Field Report Form. The Alchemy team created a University Lecture Series abstract and submitted it to select colleges and universities, both regionally and nationally. Design Leaders initiated an officeby-office download of the findings from the Firmwide Design Diagnostic evaluation. Alchemy members participated in the design charrette for the Uganda Women’s and Children’s Health Clinic, and contributed to the design portion of the Post Occupancy Evaluation. Several Alchemy members represented college career fairs including NC State, Virginia Tech and the University of Tennessee; Design Leaders also presented to the Professional Practice class at Clemson University. Design Leaders and firm leaders had a conversation with the Cannon Group regarding design leadership across multiple offices. The Image team focused on elevating LS3P’s Interiors practice, starting with a new mission statement: We listen deeply to our clients’ stories to create holistic, engaging environments that inspire people. Highlights included a virtual retreat focusing on the Interiors brand; updating materials such as the website, BIM templates, and onboarding documents; targeting strategies to better integrate with Visual Planner and Business Development efforts; setting goals for social media platforms; and establishing local Image Knowledge Teams across offices.

The Integrate team adopted AIA’s Framework for Design Excellence as standard for good design and future award submittals, created a building label based on the Framework, and integrated assessment/accountability within Deltek project reporting. The team’s AIA2030 reporting showed double the percentage of projects meeting LS3P’s building performance commitment over the previous year, and LS3P and USGBC held executive discussions on partnering for deeper impact. The team updated the OPR to include pathogen mitigation, and developed an OPR slide deck to be available in our project tools. The Ignite team had a busy year with over a dozen 1+ pro bono projects in our first year of participation, ranging from small-scale local projects to international collaborations. We hosted NOMA Fellow Christine Meyer, a graduate of North Dakota State University with a Master of Architecture, who conducted research into avenues for repurposing malls and big box stores. Cait Shaw authored a white paper on Cybernetic Care Models. LS3P also sponsored two university design studios: a Clemson studio on Designing an Elementary School with Mass Timber, and an NCSU studio on Rural Healthcare building on our previous partnership. We also completed a firmwide Innovation Survey.


Practice Advancement Center Highlights The Healthcare PAC turned pandemic challenges into opportunities, from the WHO projects which led to international work on three continents and in seven countries to a new level of collaboration between offices and sectors. When the events of 2020 turned every project into a healthcare project, the healthcare team worked with colleagues and clients to develop strategies to make every building safer. The team expanded relationships with new hospital/academic medical work (Prisma, Wake Med, UNC, Duke, SRMC, MUSC, Roper, NHRMC, Novant, and Lex Med), new MOB developers (HTA, Lindbrook, Keith Corp, Hughes, 330 Partners, and others), and design partners (SmithGroup, CO, Kahler Slater/MA, and HKS). People also found time for new knowledge creation and sharing through many design awards, articles, Foresights, speaking engagements, podcasts, and videos; engaged with Alchemy from the outset of several projects; infused diversity and inclusion into projects and proposals in a deliberate way, and hosted a fall retreat around the theme Design = Healing. The K-12 PAC had a very productive and successful year, with $784,080,800 in construction cost in the design and/or construction phases in 2020. The team produced a COVID response booklet and contributed substantial thought leadership to the field through educational webinars and discussions with A4LE to help schools navigate the crisis. Virtual platforms transformed interviews, community input meetings, and project update meetings, allowing better access for all. 2020 brought opportunities for increased collaboration as the K-12 team pivoted from “Who can we use in our office to get this done?” to “Who in the firm has the right expertise for this project?”

LS3P’s new Urban Environments PAC kicked off in October with Justin Kearnan joining the firm as Practice Leader. In the last two months of the year, Justin packed in a grand tour of all of LS3P’s offices and developed an Urban Environments Strategic Plan to propel the practice forward. Megan Bowles added “Urban Environments Strategist” to her long list of roles as well. The mission for this exciting new practice is to engage with the communities across the Southeast to better understand the challenges impacting people’s quality of life and planetary health; to design buildings, places, and systems that tackle these challenges; and to transform cities and regions throughout the Southeast to enable all people and the planet to thrive. In its inaugural year, the Higher Education PAC kicked off with Shawn Sowers joining the firm in February. Melanie Rose moved into her new role as Higher Ed Marketing Coordinator in March. Highlights included a significant amount of new content including COVID response pieces, marketing booklets, learning space typology diagrams, and videos. The team refined the go/no go process, helped update the website, created new marketing plan templates, and got to know each other better on the new Higher Ed Teams channel.

We made huge progress in our Contract Signature process in 2020 , thanks to the diligent efforts of John Works, Amy Rembert, and Melissa Strickland in a mostly remote work environment to achieve the highest level of signed contracts. Our Knowledge Management efforts in 2020 allowed us to make great strides in documenting valuable project data. While we put our quarterly data collection efforts on hold as individuals migrated to WFH, our 120+ Data Managers continued to populate data on active projects. We expanded our Knowledge management efforts to include the Administrative Team during the WFH period, and they also assisted with populating data on closed projects. This allowed us to keep this amazing group of individuals engaged full-time when their office duties lessened with everyone at home. Our unique Data Manager program was also highlighted in a global Knowledge Architecture Deep Dive, celebrating it as a best-inclass data gathering program.


Human Resources Highlights The HR team has been instrumental in guiding the firm through every aspect of the COVID challenge. Support included roundthe-clock communications, informational resources, benefits education and assistance, and detailed strategies for every phase of transition. COVID resources included Leadership, Employee, and Visitor Guides outlining COVID protocols for returning to the office (R2O); these resources continue to evolve along with emerging data and information from public health authorities and local officials. The team also implemented the new paid leave provisions under the Families First Coronavirus Relief Act to provide COVID-related benefits across the firm. We onboarded 31 new hires, including 10 summer interns, and participated in eight career fairs and six recruiting events. We also conducted multiple virtual career sessions with students, welcomed students in our offices, and hosted a panel with SCAD AIAS members and our own Design Leaders Brian Wurst and Danny Adams. The HR team also provided ongoing educational sessions through Academy, sharing both firm and employee-driven content. 2020 topics included NCARB Testing Tips and Tricks, The Business of Practice, and The Art of Presenting; Meredith Ray and Megan Bowles have been integral to the process, helping with content development, coaching, graphics, and presentations to create best-in-class knowledge sharing opportunities.

HR spearheaded the 2020 sessions for Leadership By Design Fellows, with a new focus on leadership development. We implemented 360 degree reviews firmwide, and encouraged 60-day, 180-day, and 365-day goals to help employees identify milestones for their professional development plans for the year. In 2020 the HR team also piloted the DICE (diversity, inclusivity, civility, and equity) program in collaboration with our consultant Hudson Mann. And, always focused on helping our employees plan for a secure financial future, we hosted a two-part retirement series across the firm.


D+I Strategic Plan 2020’s challenges included a national reckoning, as issues of racial inequality led to widespread protests and global calls for action. LS3P’s Diversity + Inclusion Advisory Group was instrumental in helping the firm navigate issues of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion and chart a pathway forward, and created a new D + I Strategic Plan to guide positive steps forward for the firm and the profession.

2020 TECHNOLOGY KICKED OFF IN GSP: The GSP office hosted ULI SC’s Upstate Happy Hour & BIM/VR Demo. LS3P showcased our cutting-edge digital design technology and gave participants hands-on experience. (One of the last handson events of 2020). GSP also hosted Revit representatives from each LS3P office who met with our new Strategic BIM Manager Ruth Parr for advanced Revit training and BIM roadmap discussions leading to the launch of Revit 2020.

Our Technology Team transformed into a central distribution hub overnight shipping out cords, cables, headsets, cameras, mice, keyboards, monitors and anything that could make workfrom-home a more productive and less stressful experience. Support worked around the clock answering questions and handling everything from requests for 50’ long ethernet cables to questions about home networks. The following Monday, LS3P was still open and operational thanks to one of the largest collaborative firmwide efforts to reshape our workflows in response to rapid change.

INVESTMENTS ZOOMED LS3P TO GREATER HEIGHTS: WFH became our new working condition during local saferat-home orders. Thankfully, our technology investments in the last three years equipped LS3P with the tools we needed for remote work. Every week the usage rates of Zoom and other digital collaborative tools rose as meetings and communication went virtual and our “team of teams” grew even more capable.

MOVING INTO A TEAM-OF-TEAMS WORLD: The pandemic profoundly changed how we work. Our “team of teams” seized opportunities to collaborate across projects, market sectors, and office locations; Teams became the go-to for informal chats, calls, meetings, and collaboration.

BIM STEPS TOWARD RIGHT OF RELIANCE: 2020 brought our Revit User Group closer together while moving our BIM Execution Strategies forward by giant leaps. It took coordinated advancements of architectural graphic standard setting, BIM content management, and Revit User Training Huddles to elevate consistency and quality in our digital workflow.

ADVANCEMENTS IN PLANNING AND BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE: In a year like 2020 when feelings of uncertainty dominated our outlook, LS3P reached for tools that provided better forecasting capabilities. We launched Visual Planning upgrades that modernized not only the interface of project management but also streamlined the backend data capabilities, coupled with our emerging use of Power BI to visualize insight across platforms.

JUST WHEN YOU THOUGHT NOTHING ELSE COULD GO WRONG: We experienced a growing threat of dangerous waves of cybersecurity threats and attacks in 2020 as the AEC industry experienced its worst year ever of cybercrime. Fortunately, our recent efforts to educate staff and prepare for hacking attempts helped to keep our systems secure.

ONE SECURE COLLABORATIVE NETWORK: We enlisted our consultants, clients, and project team partners to safeguard our broader network. Together, we developed a new “team of teams” sharing cyber security information to build a more resilient industry.

WE STARTED OFF GOING REMOTE AND ENDED UP MOBILE: The end of 2020 marked the largest laptop deployment to date and took our practice teams from desktopdominated to mobile-capable in one year. The timeless saying “never waste a crisis” encourages us to make the best out of unexpected challenges. If we built a 2020 time capsule, it would be filled with strange things: masks, hand sanitizer, Clorox wipes, sourdough recipes, and puzzle pieces; snapshots of home haircuts and empty aisles in the grocery stores and long lines at testing sites and food banks; unused tickets; too many political flyers; ring lights we bought for Zoom calls; stretchy clothes; an empty toilet paper roll; and leftover dried beans. So many in our communities- LS3P and beyond- have experienced loss, grief, and hardship. Everyone’s lives changed, almost overnight- if not forever, than at least for much longer than we envisioned in the early days of March. We reevaluated what matters most to us, and we held our loved ones closer.

Through it all, we leaned on the values that have grounded us for decades: excellence, integrity, empowerment, collaboration, balance, stewardship, and caring. The end of the year brought news of the fastest vaccine development in human history, and more than a few people shed tears of relief and joy when the nightly news showed footage of the first shipments of vaccines being rolled out of production facilities in cargo trucks. 2021 will bring its own challenges, but we can be proud that we weathered 2020 together, and came out stronger. As we look forward to the year ahead, we are grateful for the momentum we have. We are positioned to be leaders in our industry and in our region, and are firmly resolved to employ our design thinking and problem-solving skills in service to our clients, or communities, and the greater good.
