CLT CONCOURSE E RENOVATION | CHARLOTTE, NC

ENGAGE Transportation is about opportunities: opportunities for work, pleasure, excitement, discovery, and connection. We believe that designs for aviation and transportation should engage these possibilities, facilitating efficient, smooth, and welcoming travel for journeys of any distance. We understand that every project is unique, and we will work closely with you to develop a deep understanding of your goals, vision, and parameters before we draw the first line.

DESIGN The world of aviation and transportation is constantly evolving in response to new technologies, regulations, and passenger expectations. We bring our expertise, experience, and leading-edge technology to bear on creating spaces which combine efficiency and an enjoyable passenger experience. We know that designs for aviation and transportation must be multimodal, interconnected, and highly functional; we believe they should also be inspiring.

TRANSFORM We understand that airports often serve as the “front door” to a region, and that first impressions matter. Design excellence impacts not only the way we feel within a space, but also our frame of mind when we arrive at our destination. To this end, we design spaces which transform the traveler’s experience from “getting from point A to point B” into “experiencing a memorable journey.”

DESIGNING FOR AVIATION Designs for aviation create multifaceted challenges requiring interdisciplinary solutions. Understanding that the key element of any successful aviation project is practical functionality, we design facilities for maximum value while providing a high level of service. In most cases, projects must be closely coordinated in order to allow continuous airport operation without a degradation in quality of service. Our design process enables us to meet modern expectations for efficiency and passenger comfort, while providing flexibility to adapt to future needs.

MYRTLE BEACH INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT TERMINAL CAPACITY ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM MYRTLE BEACH, SC Aviation demand in the Grand Strand area called for improvements in both capacity and level-of-service for the Myrtle Beach International Airport’s airfield, passenger terminal area, and ground access systems serving the airport. LS3P and Giuliani Associates Architects spearheaded the design and delivery of the capacity program. Airside and landside improvements included a new 240,000 SF terminal and concourse, increasing the number of gates from 7 to 13. Other upgrades included renovations to the existing terminal façade, a passenger boarding bridge, reconstruction of the terminal apron pavement, Taxiway ‘A’ expansion and reconstruction, a new rental car customer service facility with a connecting canopy, and a covered exit plaza with employee break room and facilities. Future plans include the design of a 1200-space structured parking deck. Design priorities included direct and free-flowing passenger circulation, wayfinding signage for passenger orientation, replacement of outdated systems, conformance with life safety and building code requirements for wind and seismic design criteria, and secure separation of passengers from the general public and public facilities. Blue and green colored glass and metal panel systems reflect the South Carolina context of the beaches and golf along the Grand Strand.

TRIDENT TECHNICAL COLLEGE SC AERONAUTICAL TRAINING CENTER NORTH CHARLESTON, SC The new South Carolina Aeronautical Training Center at Trident Technical College provides highly specialized training for the future aeronautics workforce, along with continuing education for employees of aircraft manufacturers, suppliers and vendors. This 164,000 SF facility occupies a 67-acre site on the school’s Enterprise Campus with each of its three floors serving a unique purpose. The first floor is zoned into academic and hands-on avionics training, including aircraft assembly, mechatronics, and automation engineering. A 60,000 SF aircraft ramp, two massive high-bay hangars, and a full-scale barrel section from a Boeing 787 occupy the space. The second floor houses 25 specialty labs and six flex-space labs for highly-technical skills training in metrology, CNC machining, aeronautics, additive manufacturing, and nondestructive inspection and testing. This space is designed for both students and the industry workforce to develop the next level of skills for career advancement. The third floor includes dedicated space for Boeing and readySC training programs, including space to re-certify aircraft maintenance employees. Inspired by the cutting-edge aeronautics field, the building’s overall design carries a sleek, contemporary, and streamlined aesthetic. Monochromatic neutrals in black, gray, and white are highlighted with accents of deep blues and vivid greens; Floor patterns and light fixtures provide a sense of wayfinding through the Gallery space, like white trails in the sky from a jet engine; and Ceilings sweep upward like an aerodynamic wing tip.

CHARLOTTE DOUGLAS INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT CONCOURSE C RENOVATION CHARLOTTE, NC The Concourse C Interior Renovation project is part of a multiphase, coordinated terminal modernization program throughout CLT’s existing five concourses. Concourse floor, wall and ceiling finishes are being updated with modern materials; new technology amenities are being implemented to provide greater access for the modern traveler while additional features are being integrated to promote passenger safety. These new finishes and amenities are state of the art providing wayfinding and functional identification within the airport environment. They are low maintenance, highly durable and cost effective. Renovation construction is ongoing while the concourse remains fully operational. (In association with The Wilson Group Architects) As a precursor to this project, LS3P collaborated with two other design firms to jointly develop CLT’s design guidelines and finish standards throughout all existing and future concourses.

CHARLOTTE DOUGLAS INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT CONCOURSE E EXPANSION CHARLOTTE, NC Charlotte’s Concourse E was originally completed in 2003 with 19 new regional gates. Another 3 concourse expansions in the past 12 years added an additional 12 gates to bring the total to 31 current gates. This final Phase 9 expansion to Concourse E consists of a 38,000 SF addition adds 10 more gates bringing the total to 41 gates along with adding 2 new concession amenities along with American Airlines offices and a breakroom. Construction drawings were completed in early June 2019. Project is scheduled for completion November 2021. The new design will be more spacious with 12’ metal ceilings with integrated lighting and HVAC, new integrated powered seating and a full bar in the center of the space. Two clerestory light wells will bring natural lighting into the circulation areas. Areas of soft seating with ample charging and work stations will be sure to enhance the passenger experience.

WILMINGTON INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT WILMINGTON, NC This extensive renovation program for the Wilmington airport provides space to accommodate growing numbers of passengers and makes room for future growth. The new design moves all commuter passengers to a second-level space, and provides passengers with enhanced services and amenities while in the terminal. The project also encompassed exterior renovations as well as new interior finishes, floor coverings throughout the atrium, ticket and rental car counters and baggage claim areas.

CHARLESTON COUNTY AVIATION AUTHORITY FEDERAL INSPECTION SERVICES (FIS) RENOVATION CHARLESTON, SC This renovation for a 1980’s area Federal Inspection Services (FIS) facility at Charleston International Airport included an accelerated schedule, stringent security requirements, and a constrained footprint. An aggressive project timeline, less than five months from design to Substantial Completion, accommodated a new direct international flight between Charleston and London. Post 9-11 security regulations prohibit partial renovations for FIS facilities, so the renovation completely updated the building for full compliance with current regulations and detailed requirements of each space. LS3P validated the program feasibility within the existing footprint, and worked closely with Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to review any variations to align the program and detailed requirements. Major functions include primary and secondary processing, detention facilities, and office space. The resulting design modernized the space with Charleston-inspired artwork spanning the tall columns, strategic lighting to enliven the enclosed areas, and interior finishes which add visual interest and texture in a serene color palette.

NASHVILLE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT CENTRAL RECEIVING AND DISTRUBUTION CENTER NASHVILLE, TN The Nashville International Airport CRDC is a repurposed portion of an existing airport multipurpose building straddling the SIDA fence on the airport campus. 15,000 SF of the existing building was segregated into secure, non-secure, and administrative spaces for a 3rd party logistical operations. The space was updated with high speed rolling doors, employee screening stations, new security and access controls, electric dock levelers, and all new interior finishes. As this CRDC was sharing a building with other airport tenants, future expansion of the CRDC was a priority in the design of this facility. Demising walls with security netting and rolling doors separate the tenants, so an increase in square footage is quick, cost effective and no compromise in operations necessary should an expansion be required. LS3P developed a 3 dimensional virtual model of the CRDC for the client’s visualization and marketing purposes. Virtual reality headsets enable one to walk through the space in real time and visualize the CRDC workflow process. LS3P also created several video walk throughs with all of the rendered finishes and equipment in the facility.
