SETTING THE PACE

On Olney Heights

LOCATED in one of the most attractive sections of our city, surrounded by the rolling hills and beautiful landscaping of Wister Woods, the buildings of La Salle College High School stand out prominently. This rural setting lends to La Salle a sense of airiness and freedom that contributes to both the intellectual and physical wellbeing of its students. Shrubbery abounds throughout the campus, and the buildings, recently augmented by the college library and the soon-to-be completed dormitories, are truly distinctive, readily blending their modern lines with the verdant surroundings. The park路like quadrangle is a favorite meeting place of the students. Its friendly atmosphere allows the novice to become quickly accustomed to his new surroundings. To the upperclassman the beauty is a familiar sight, one which will long remain et.c:hed in his memory.

Ah, those were the days! Why its even easy to remember when AI Damiani used to know a barber.

King Kong Koegler sneaked a glanc:e at his muterpiec:e before resuming his attac:k.

Our Illustrious Past Can it be true that the time has passed so fleetingly? It is hard to realize that we who entered La Salle as boys four short years ago are now leaving our Alma Mater as men. Yet our departure is far from an empty one. For even as we leave La Salle we know that there is a part of La Salle which shall never leave us. Along with enlightened minds and molded characters we shall take with us the never-to-be-forgotten memories of those happy and carefree days. Who can ever forget Brother Michael's can label collections? And no one can help smiling at the recollections of exploring the mysterious world ot protozoa under the guidance of "laugh a minute" Leo McGinley. No, it doesn't seem long ago at all. We get an empty feeling inside as we say goodbye to our teachers and classmates. How do we feel about it? No words can adequately describe the mixture of emotions which engulf us. Pride in our accomplishments, the sorrow of leaving, the joy of graduating, and the awesome anticipation of facing the vast, ominous world dominate us. These complex sensations descend upon us as we walk down the corridor for the lost time, post the friendly o ~mosphere of Brother D. Albert's office, and down the stairs which take us out of La Salle and out of a phase of our life which we shall forever cherish.

Dave Collins relaxed with a good book oblivious to his industrious surroundings.

If Ed Gmerek looks like he had en ecute case of indigestion, it was only because he was next in line for the stickler which had Joe Mahon stumped.

A n.turel ~hoi~• for tha ouhtendin9 athlete of !963 wes South Philadelphi~t's Tom Derago. H is latent bes~etbell potential was early noti~ed by Mr. O'Brien who rewarded Tom for his smooth freshmen play by ma~ing him a vanity performer in his sophomore year. For three years, his adept peuing and ~lever ploymaking, c:oupled with his prolific: scoring, have paved the wey to many e Blue and Gold vic:tory. Tom's greatest personal ac:hievemant until now-being awerded en All-Catholic: bertl.-c:limued e brilli&nt season in whic:h he co-captained the La Selle five to within one point of the league crown. To the elraedy illustrious list of out· Jtending &plorer athletes is now edded the name of one of the finest-Tom Derago.

OUTSTANDING SENIORS OF

Equally admired by Jtudents end faculty, Ed Stein wes ••· lected the moat representetive member of the ~less of 1953. He ~onstantly end energetically devoted himself to serving his s~hool. His friendly personality end leedenhip heve enabled him to corner the mer~et on presidencies at La Selle. Ed wes president of the Student Council during its f ormetive y..r. Furthermore, he served as president of 4A and of t!le lenilde Club. He has been a good student, heving won e sc:holeatic: letter in his first two years. Jack Walsh proved the ideal choice for th• most activityminded senior. His most familiar roles have b..n those of musician and athlete. A polished technique at the piano and the marimba combined with a professional handling of the percussion section of the concert band to make him a versatile performer in La Salle's ouf$tanding cultural activity. In li'Cidition, Jack served as ihe ever-alert drum major of the eighty piece marching band. In athletics, he achieved recognition as a back-stroker on the swimming team, representing La Salle •in the Catholic League championships. Track seeson witnessed his valuable contributions in the hurdle and high jump events. He was also active in intramural competition. Many of the fine articles and captions of the 1953 Blue and Gold are products of his literary prowess. And, as H all this were not enough, Jack was a consistent honor student.

AN OUTSTANDING CLASS

A recapitulation of honor roles and scholastic prizes since September of 1949 would result in on• name's being ever present-Ken Wright. To Ken, then, goes the coveted award for the highest general average in the class of '53. This comes as no surprise since Ken has won four scholastic medals and letters during his stay on our twenty acres. Adding even fu rther luster to this honor is Ken's participation in •xlracurricular activities. As class pr•sid•nt during all four yaar~ and as a delegat• to the Student Council this year, Ken has proved his executive capacity. The Wisterien and the 1953 Blue and Gold have benefitted from his clear and oxpressiva writing. He was a mainstay of tho Science Club. His stellar performances in t rack have resulted in his having been elected co-captain of the Explorer cinder squad. Ken Wright~ scholar's scholar, a sportmen's sportman, end a gentlemen's gentleme n.

Arriving at Whitemarsh to start the evening early are Dave McCall, AI Cairns, Charley Maynes and Joe Boyle with their dates. Who said that the "Runt Men" wu wearing knicken to the prom?

While the other couples ere preoccupied with enjoying the evening, Joe Schmit% slows his dancing tempo to catch the cemermon's eye.

Miles Ryan, Gabe Pascuui, and their dates find intermission most relaxing. Alhtough Miles is having the time of his life he just can't help complaining about the stiff shirt.

Vic Gavin provides e bit of his usual humor to the evening. Mario Paveltich, Dick Monihan and Vic's date are mirthfully engrossed with his antics.

Januory twenty-third sow the dreom of every senior come true omid o swirl of lovely girls and romantic music. George Somers set the mood for the occosion and the wolls of Whitemorsh echoed and re-echoed soothing strains. Proud seniors and their dotes ogreed thot the evening wos without porollel, and all too quickly the stroins of Somertime brought to a close their night of nights. The Senior Prom hod ended, but for most the evening was just beginning. Brother Thomes, o post moster 11t conducting successful proms, and his committee chairman, Joe Sculli, c11n be justly proud of o job well done.

"To increose the spirit of c hority ond unselfishness so necessory in one who aspires to the religious life." The Benilde Club, under the copable moderation of Brother David Albert, achieves this two-fold purpose in fostering religious vocations and dedicoting itself to the odvoncement of Catholic Action. These meons are accomplished through informol discussion, film strips, and octuol practice. In oddition, the Club rounds out its unique prog ram throug h social and othletic octivities. Suc:cess is a product of careful planning. Here, Brother Celestine discusses the layout of next month's Wis with co-editor Gendanek, while Joe Ponczka, Bernie McCormick, and Je rry Tremblay prepare the sporh page.

The L~ Sa lie Wisterian in its nineteenth year of publication has become the eyes and ears of the student body. Moderated by Brother Celestine, the paper has ogoin met with the high standards experienced in past years. Under the energetic leodership of CO路editors Gerald Tremblay and Ronald Gendaszek many noticeable advancements were ret~lized. Included emong these was the new three column head. During the year the Wis achieved its end by providing knowledge, experience and pleasure to its staff and news of pertinate interest to the school.

The intricacies of the serif head sh..t are explained by Jerry Tremblay and Ron Gendanek. Interested staff members inc:lude Ken Wright, Ed Connolly, sports editor Jerry Chesnes, and Denis Welsh.

Outstanding among extra-curricular activities at La Salle is the Art Club. Its apt members, guided by Brother Frederick William, herald all coming events of school interest. The Bulletin Board is seldom without one of their original and colorful posters notifying the student body of some future social or religious activity. The Art Club and its moderator well deserve a particular accolade of recognition for the part they play in stimulating the interest of La Salle students in compus octivi· ties.

OF ATTRACTION The stands at Shibe Park literally shook with applause as the popular La Salle marching band, attired in its new midshipman uniforms, made a guest appearance at the Philadelphia Eagles vs. the Dallas Texans game last fall. This enthusiasm was the result of the precision and spectacle displayed by our heralded band on all previous occasions. It provided a much deserved reward for Mr. Colantonio and Brother Fortunatus John for their unending work toward the bond's success. This year's marching season was highlighted by the excellent performance at Franklin Field when La Salle was chosen to represent Georgia University in its tussle with Penn. The unique interpretation of such numbers as the Mexican Hot Dance, Ach du Lieber Augustine, and Sidewalks of New York, coupled with the vastness of eighty marchers kicking in breath-taking precision earned for La Salle the enviable reputation of one of the best marching and playing units in the East.

Under the moderation of Brothers E. Thomas and D. Albert, the Student Council of La Salle College High School hos h.,d its inception. The various llctivities of the Council give splendid opportunities to learn vital lessons in citizenship, to grow in mutual respect end understanding, end to erose artificial barriers that often separate adults. Through them, self-control is acquired, cooperative attitudes ore developed and the principles of honesty, fair p loy, and good sportmonship are learned. The officers of the Council in its formotive year were Edwin Stein, President: William Magee, Vice-President; and Thomas Flood, Secretory.

BLUE AND GOLD The 1953 Blue and Gold is the product of a devoted and indefatigable staff which, with the moderator, has endeavored to provide you with a memorable pictorial record, using a minimum of wordage. They have not been alone in their desire to provide an enduring profile of your years at La Salle. The student body show'd its enthusiastic support by swelling the returns of the annual patron drive to an all-time high, thus spurring the staff to redoubled effort. To our patrons, to our photographers and publisher, and to the school administration we extend our most sincere thanks. Tombola chances are sold by Mrs. English, the club's president at the February card party. The hard work and organizational ability of Mrs. English combined with the unselfish expenditure of time . by many club me mbers t o make this and every Mothers' Club affair eminently successful.

MOTHERS' CLUB No organization affiliated with La Salle has done more for the student body than the Mothers' C lub. Headed by a Board of Governors with Mrs. Edward English as president and Brother Alphonsus as moderator, the Mothers' Club sponsors numerous social events throughout the school year. Of these events, none is more familiar to the La Salle student than the Saturday night dance. Besides playing host at this weekly entertainment, t he Club holds such affairs as card parties and the annual Christmas celebration. The crowning achievement of the social year comes in May with the arrival of La Salle Night. This gala affair offers unlimited entertainment in the form of dancing, card games, and bingo, and is one reason why the Mothers' Club will remain a pleasant memory in the mind of each La Salle graduate.

FATHERS' CLUB Living up to the high standards established in previous years, the present members of the fathers' club have expended considerable time and effort in their movement to create a closer relationship among students, parents and teachers. Another, and just as important purpose, of the Men of La Salle is to provide financial aid to deserving students who find it difficult to meet the expenses of the scholastic year. The highlight of the year for both fathers and sons was the annual banquet, held in the fall. One of the main reasons for this year's successful activities was the encouragement and guidance given so unselfishly by the newly appointed moderator of the group, Brother E. Anthony.

A steady diet of mental activity is as detrimental to the well-being of a student as none at all. The weekend is a welcome opportun ity to release tension built up by five days of classes. This accounts for the intensity of competition displayed by La Salle students on Saturday mornings, when respective classes meet to struggle for supremacy in interclass athletic ability. The intramural leagues were moderated this year by Brother William, whose know-how insured well organized leagues and skillful officiating for the competing classes.

The 1952 La Salle Football Squad, while not the power of the league, proved that spirit and drive mean a lot more than depth and si1e. Real team spirit and desire to win won many fans to the ranks of La Salle followers. Looking back upon the season, we realize that the team, whether leading or behind, never slowed for a minute. They were always fighting down to the wire. If champ:onships were given for spirit, drive, and hustle, La Salle would have won the crown. Teach boys to play and pray, to think and work, to love victory and to hate defeat, to fight for what they love and believe in and, above all things. to fig ht fo live with the confidence born of victory, and you have built the fundamental structure of real American youth. Such mentorship was notably expressed in fhe coaching ability of Mr. James Gallagher and Mr. William Gaynor. There is an old adage that goes: "When a coach wins, he wins; when he loses he builds cha racter." But this is only a gog ; character building is not a gog. It is this primary goal t hat has once again put La Solie on the " long end of the score." 90
