community almost describes La Salle a sense of sharing, of growth ,within; but it's more than that. Learning has a lot to do with it. But it's more than that.

Need, interest, trying, all say something - but not enough.

In reviewing La Salle's recent cross country teams, one cannot help but notice the tradition of fine running which Explorer squads have upheld. Both excellent and outstanding individuals have distinguished La Salle in the East, not only through their impressive racing and competitiveness, but also through the sportsmanship and "class" which they have exhibited. The season just past was no exception, as Coach Pat Devine's harriers, led by senior standout John Burns, performed well throughout the Fall. Burns proved repeatedly why most consider him the state's finest runner, winning fifteen of the seventeen races in which he ran, and going undefeated in the Philadelphia area.

In addition to establishing a new record for Belmont Plateau's 2.9 mile course, Burns triumphed in the State Catholic Championship, the Philadelphia Catholic League Championship, the Philadelphia Coaches' Invitational, and the Temple Invitational, among others.

Junior John Mohrbacher was also among the league's best, earning all;atholic laurels and placing highly in many contests. Seniors Pete Moone lob Reynolds, Dave Thomas, and junior Carl Mohrbacher were consistent corers for the varsity and played a major role in the team's successes. N. I.: Also, The Harrier National Cross Country Magazine has selected John lurns as a member of the 1974 High School All American team. The ~agazine has ranked John as one of the nation's ten best.

We started out easy. No nine to five practices, we concentrated instead more on technique. It seemed to have worked the first few scrimmages, we crushed our opponents, Delhas, William and Allen, Neshaminy. The regular season opened next week, nothing could stop us. On a fieldgoal, our hope for an opening victory was shattered 10-7. OK forget Springfield. Concentrate on the League opener against Kendrick. We lead at the half, but the determined Knights come back; a loss, 20-13.

Next, crosstown rivals McDevitt: Tamasitis completes 14 of 19 pases. But we can't score on our conversions, the Lancers eek out 20-18 vin.

Each new game inflicts its toll of injuries and disappointment. Dese, take it easy, we're saving you for the prom. We go back to fundamentals. The offense is changed, and a scrimmage everyday. We still have our pride, we must win.

We always hustle, we always hit, but our mistakes hurt us. Our last chances slip away, against Wood in a mist at Council Rock, on a safety at North. Homecoming seemed bleak without a win, but we came out to an overflowing stadium. Ryan won the physical contest, ours was an emotional victory. Records can tell only of lost games. Experience gained is not measured by statistics. Memories of games lost fade in time, still the impressions of the season remain.

Back row (I tor): Tom Corey (coach), Mike Smith, Mike Tillger, Tom Belcher, Ed McGlinn, Frank Varallo, Mike McGlinn Front row (I tor): Rob Pieri, Mike Driscoll, John Love, Mike Carey, Pat Noonan, Shawn McGlynn

First day of practice there's so many kids there isn't even enough room to do up-downs. Some soon quit when they hear they'll have to lose weight and train. With the lesser number of kids, the practices get harder and longer. The new kids learn moves and names and the old kids makeup names and moves. The work begins before the match when we carry down the mats and the real work begins with the match. Mike pulls us over Carrol by combined cajolery and threats. (for the first time ever!!!) But a win doesn't路 satisfy Mike, he puts us through more grueling practices and we learn more moves. After all the work is over and done, we find it was worth it when we come in fourth out of eight with McGlinn going AllCatholic and Smith and Driscoll running up. Tillger, Belcher, and Noonan also get honors.

Walt Farrel - Coach, and Staff

BACK ROW STANDING: Br. Kevin McManus - Moderator, W Bobbie, T. Vale, T. Almond, D. Diehl, B. Vrancken, M. Juliano, J. Morozin, M. Perota, J. Herling, A. Kelley, Walt Farrel - Coach, SECOND ROW: T. Bracken - CO-CAPTAIN, J. Toy, J. Dougherty, P. Horn - CO-CAPTAIN, T. BRACKEN, D. Givnish, R. Horn, J. McNamara, BOTTOM ROW: M. Clark, E. Barnes, J. O'Donnell, B. Mc'Clain, B. Kane, G. Love, T. Lynch, P. Susian, S. Brennan. M. McNamara - MISSING

With the loss of not a few outstanding swimmers to graduation, the LaSalle mermen, under the coaching of Mr. Walt Farrell, reinstitute the early morning practices of years past in anticipation of a tough, competitive season. After sweeping past Upper Dublin and Bonner, we faced a pair of vastly improved squads, Judge and Wood. Outstanding performances by junior John Toy and sophomore diver Tommy Lynch, plus Joe Morozin's big win in the I.M. provided us with exceedingly narrow margins of victory.

A Tim Bracken lecture and a lot of hard work helped get us back on our feet, and, with a new supply of confidence, we're ready for the rest of the Catholic League. The Horn;s, McNamara's, and Brackens improve steadily and the Explorers swim to convincing victories over tough squads from Cardinal Dougherty, Archbishop Ryan, and Saint Joseph's Prep. The tension mounted as we prepared for the O'Hara meet - they are the final stepping stone in our quest for yet another Catholic League and City Title. We all work hard and most of us shave, but they outscore us eightytwo to eighty-one, the Explorer's first loss in almost a decade.

This year's Hockey team, although not recognized as a varsity team, emerged as a club to be reckoned with. The able coaching of Gary Young on the II A" Team and Ron von Lipsey on the 11 B11 , made for very talented squads. A" Team offensive captains Markus Barth, Joe Miller, and Mike Dwyer led the club to a 91 goal total this season. Defensive captain Bob Donahue created a defensive stronghold ... that seemed impenatrable II

but wasn't always so. Underclass support was certainly noticeable, with Juniors Tony Maginnis and Bernie Lafferty providing powerful additions to the scoring lines. A new addition to the '75 club is Freshman Pete Nolan. Peter has shown his talents to be worthy of the team. His presence for the next three years could prove to be what the team needs for a championship season. After looking over the team record for the year, it would have to be said that the La Salle Hockey Club is THE team to beat next year.

Soccer at LaSalle in recent years has been just a small group of students playing inter-squad games, but this year the team gained a birth into the Inter-County Soccer League with full support from the school. The team was the best new team in league play and is looking ahead for possible entrance into Catholic League play in coming seasons.

As October 15 rolled around, it was that time of year again. To break out the sneakers as the La Salle High basketball preseason got underway, filled with aprehension and great expectation. Out of the fifty or so to try out, only a very select group of twelve individuals would have the opportunity and honor of playing on the varsity squad. Coach Osborne's work was cutout for him ...

. . . as new members and situations arose and other difficulties were encountered. Our goal was obvious - the Catholic league championship - but a lot of work lay between that, such as, something which many bystanders say looks interesting but is actually a pain in the "expletive deleted" to do. The (ugh) fundamentals were drilled into us and this soon paid off as we went a pleasing 6-2 in preseason. The Christmas tournament was the turning point, after it we raced to a lead in Division which we never relinquished. Once the goals of attaining a playoff spot were attained, we could devote all our concentration to"Yards the Palestra, the climax of a highschool hoopster's career. Our conquest of Wood was the first step scaled toward our goal, but Championship hopes were cut short by a rather disastrous third quarter against Judge.

Deep in the heart of Manayunk, misplaced between factory and pollution, lies Schuylkill Boat Club, the home of La Salle Crew. Through the concerted efforts of many oarsmen and an unwavering team spirit, this hollow shell of a building was converted into a structure of little grace but great facility. Walt Konopka will begin this third year as varsity sweep coach, his assistant Frank Hoffman taking care of the underclass boats. High hopes are held for this year's varsity crews. The varsity eight will benefit from the acquisition of a new Schoenbrod shell, and the expert navigation of their internationally experienced coxswain, Fred Crumlish. Among the candidates for a seat in the varsity are: Bob Coco, Bob Devlin, Glen Desantis, Gary Edling, Jim Gillespie, Bob Martin, Bill Nolan, Mike Orlowski, Dave Reagan, and Tom Smith. All of these oarsmen are returning from the vigorous training of

the fall and winter. CREW IS A SPORT. The sculling team will be headed by veterans Pete Cosenza and Joe Harris, who will attempt to recapture the Stotesbury doubles title won lost year by Stan Depman and Pat Brown The scullers row from Malta Boat Club, under the outstanding coaching of Rick Stehlik.

With the return of several seasoned letterman and the emergence of new and eager prospects, this year's nine promises to be a forward step in the growth of La Salle's baseball program.

The last few years have been developmental in nature, the coming season holds the aspirations of realized potential and an increased share of victories. Perseverance and desire will again prove the keys as the spring approaches, bringing new trials and new hopes.

Early this year, in response to student outcry, the Committee to Investigate the Cafeteria was estab I ished. The objectives of this committee were to study and take action in four areas: vandal ism, trash, thefts, and prices.

CAFETERIACOMMITTEE - Don Rongione, Frank Currie, Mike Kerins, Mike Fields, Frank Cervone, Don Kieser, John Kelly.

One function of the Student Council that arouses interest around the school is the Student Exchange Program. This is the program in which students at La Salle attend classes at another school for a few days and students from this other class come to La Salle. The exchange has the further educational benefits of familiarizing students with other forms of learning environments and the furtherance of an exchange of ideas.

UDENT EXCHANGE PROGRAM: Steve Alberico, Pete Cilio, Rick Becker, Don Rongione, Dennis Lynch, ike Fields.

The 1975 Involvement Day provided a mixture of entertainment and school and Career-related studies which were both valuable and satisfying to all. Held on February 6, this year's Involvement Day featured a variety of speakers and topics, ranging from philosophy to astrology and ventriloquism to medicine. Directed by senior Kevin McBride, the day saw all but one of the scheduled speakers arrive, despite poor weather conditions. Involvement Day Committee: Don Rongione, Kevin McBride, Tony Tozzi

Having been conceived in the spring last year by its moderator, Brother Thomas McPhillips, and seniors John Draganescu and Gary Edling, the Future Physicians Club serves to educate and inform of the scientific and educational aspects, of a medical career.

The Religous Awareness Group has been initiated in the form of regular student - faculty prayer meetings. This practice is also continued in the practice of daily Mass in our school chapel to further heighten the student's awareness of the importance on religion in his daily life.

At LaSalle, creative interests often find expression in the annual publication of the Gazebo. Poetry and prose contributed by students are coordinated into an artistic whole (hopefully), with the superv1s1on and patience of Mr. Gerald Tremblay, Moderator.

One day in September of 74 a group of students with nothing else to do during fifth period appeared in the auditorium, in accordance with their schedules, for acting workshop. However, Mr. McGovern was unable to attend for long, and said, "Come back on C day". After a few delays caused by various and sundrie reasons, we got down to the real stuff! Reading parts from "Mr. Roberts", "West Side Story", "Death of a Salesman", and others, equally well known. Soon the suggestion appeared that we do a real play. Everybody liked the idea, and we proceeded to search for a real play. We did not find one. We found the Christmas Play. It called for four female parts. We found them. Or rather, they came to us; all the way from the Mount. Very nice, all of them. After many rehearsals we were ready. Then a dress rehearsal on Thursday night and we were prepared to face a bunch of restless frosh, sophs, juniors, and seniors; in two performances. To our surprise we pulled it off. No rotten cabbages, rotten tomatoes, or dead cats were thrown, and boos and hisses were in a minority. In general, a good time was had by all.

We wanted to accompany this article with a picture of the Spirit Club, instead, all we could get was this photo of everyone who was in the auditorium at the time. Under the leadership of Jim White, Hugh Mccaffrey, and Mike Williams, this year's club will probably be remembered best for its signs. With Joe Jacobsen, Bill Dougherty, Mike Herling, Joe Mitchell and others at the brushes, this year's club signs not only aroused spirit but were often humorous as well. Jim White, especially, will be remembered for his wit, not to mention his spelling (i.e. Pull the plus on O'Hara; Judge vs. LaSale; Come show some spirt). This year's pep rallys were an overwhelming success. After the second rally, both students in attendance said they were aroused and they "hoped they made the Palester." Brother Bob Shea, after being shaken from his slumber, said that the rally ranked right up there with Retreat. Nevertheless, this year's club will go down in the chronicles of LaSalle's history for those famous last words of Jim White, "WE CAN'T HANG THAT!!!"

On November twenty-first, the Four Chefs hosted the Father and Son Banquet, highlighted by the presentation of La Salle's Man of the Year to Doctor Ike Gallagher for twenty-five years of service. Frank Polito's remarks underscored the rationale of the Father - Son Dinner, while the variety of Brother Edmund's awards provided additional entertainment. With the attendance filling the restaurant, the evening proved to be a memorable one for La Salle's fathers and sons.

With strong determination and "seriousness" of purpose, the Math Team exercised in "mathematics" with a pure victory in mind.

The 1975 edition of the La Salle yearbook took shape as a result of the industry of the three Editors - Bob Devlin, Joe Harris, and Ed Stafford - and the great organizational effort they used in aiding and directing the dozen - odd staff members on the '75 edition. \/Ve enjoyed the Saturday marathons and trips to Roy Rogers' and humorous copy and working and the laying out of photos of the people who make La Salle. Though it was hard work and sometimes boring, we felt confident about the '75 edition. \/1/ith that in mind, we hope that we have succeeded in our objective of making our readers agree on the memories we hope we have instilled of 1975.

I 0 N Words always fail to express precisely the feelings of the person who writes them How can one express in writing a strong sense of identification with, a deep respectfor and a satisfaction that comes of working with the men of the class of 1975? Let thei few words at least symbolize the profound experiencethat belongs to one who carries th responsibility and delights in the honor of working closely with the men of th graduating class. Remarkable growth and development occur during the high school years in the life of a young man. To begin as a somewhat naive, starry-eyed boy and to finish as a critical, polished young man unveils the reality which is human growth from 14 to 17 years o, age. A high schoolcounselorenjoys an enviable vantage point as this growth transpires. More than a spectator, the counseloris invited to enter actively into this growth proce. and to contribute in a very interpersonal way to a positive development.Opportunities discuss values, to challengeideas and feelings, to share joys and difficulties - all these events are elements in the life of a counselor at La Salle. When two persons meet and share, growth is never unilateral. The young man and the counselor are each challengedto grow, to define one another's feelings, to clarify one another's values. Growth is frequently painful because it implies leaving behind pas securities and adventuring into the unknown future with hope.

Since growth has been so much a part of the last four years, so have pains, risecurities, challenges, risks. The graduates and the entire La Salle family have assed through these four years together and what each of us now is testifies to the ourage and maturity which guided each of us.

A freshman comes to La Salle as an anxious, wary anklebiter, oblivious to the bovine beatitudes of one who knows. But then, many a flower is born to blush unseen and spew its fragrance upon the desert air. At first, we didn't know anything; though we soon improved our status as lowly peons. At least, we were great at a party. Gradually, our wariness dissolved into friendship. Brother John helped this transition. Room 304 seemed always open to whatever stragglers dropped by, even if it was just to say hello. Or one could expect when it was least expected, a sharp jab in the ribs followed by a broad grin and a quick pun. Johnny D' brought a sympathy, a patience, and most of all a deep understanding to the class of '75. He was part of our lives for four years, he will be part of our remembrances forever.
