In order to better relate to the world around us, and to make the best use of our own educational opportunities, we can find expert assistance from the guidance department in a very relaxed and free atmosphere. Through the aid of the guidance counselors, we leave La Salle wellprepared to meet the world. Brother Joe and Devine guidance help us with daily problems, and when the test scores come in, either praise us or pat us on the back, saying, " That's okay, you' ll do better next time. ASVABUI??

In addition to the extensive sports and intramurals program, our beloved school possesses a fine Physical Education program. Each student spends two periods a week in gym or pool class. These classes relax us as well as enhance our capacity for mental work. Take your shoes off in the gym, mister. Walk around that pool, men. All locks must be taken off lower large lockers by sundown, or they wili be cut off; we already have a whole box in my office. Mr. Farrell "hanging out" in the nurse's office.

The first time we met him, we knew that Bern ie McCabe was different. Wiry and dignified, his devilish Irish grin told us that he was up to something. For many of us, it was the first real experience of high school . Although we had already had a taste of math and science, he was the first to enlighten us to the more subtle mysteries of the universe. Mixing spicy stories on etymology with the usual vocabulary dribble, he made the tedious part of English bearable. But from the beginning, his forte was always the works he assigned. His unusual insights into life always surfaced as he led us into the literary world. Starting with Lord of the Flies, and continuing with works such as A Separate Peace, Lord of the Rings, and Inherit the Wind, we learned about life through

conch shells, hobbits, and monkey trials. He led us, following blindly, through discussions. In each case, we discovered a second, more poignant level of thought which opened our eyes and enriched our minds. The discussions themselves proved what kind of teacher he was. Low-keyed , open , and personal, they were such that made us want to contribute, instead of feeling forced to talk. And just when we though class was getting boring , he' d bring up something strange that would have us leaving the class buzzing about the newest " Bernielsm ".

Our relationship with Bernie quickly ripened ; it was now more than studentsto-teacher. Sophomore year led to a joyful reunion in English class. Instead of getting a teacher, we got Bernie. Continuing with authors like Salinger, Hemingway, and Shakespear, and books such as Last Summer and The Ox-Bow Incident, we began to learn the difference between reality and dreams. Although novels changed, and perhaps became more soph isticated , Bernie remained the same. Sly and unflappable, he was always the master of debate and discussion.

45

And although we d1dn't know it, he was teaching us to be individuals.

After a one-year intermission, senior year brought us back to Bernie. Though few of us realized it at the moment, we all had grown since our first meeting with him, and he deserved much of the credit

46

This year was the culmination of our years In English. It was Bernie at his best. With his stories , analyses, and discussions, he had finally groomed us into true English students . We could sense a feeling of accomplishment in having come so far in only four years.

In advancing from an unorganized, incoherent essay in freshman year on Piggy and the shell to a five-page paper on the intricacies of Aeschylus, we realized we had become intellectually aware. As we look back through our four years, we can remember the man In the beard, with the grin on his face and the story on the tip of his tongue. He is an educator In every sense of the word. He gave us his knowledge and we give him our appreciation and thanks.

It was one of the warmest days on record lor thts time of year Hall way through November and 11 was 75° and humtd. Not exactly prime weather to run a cross country race '"· But there was no turntng back now because the sweats were already off and the rest of the Catholic League stood wartlng for the two commands, set and the gun. How last the last three months had passed' Once we had sat, a primarily young and untried team, In that little cab•n '" the Poconos We had tmprovtsed our own camp, dorng our own cookmg and hv1ng '" close quarters with one shower Nevertheless 1t had been a sucess and we were drawn together as a team . We had dectded that we would show the league and our school that the La Salle tradtllon of excellence tn cross country was sttll strong Most people dtd not expect to see much of a race today Logtcally they were nght The Mohrbacker brothers were the only ones

back from last year's team and La Salle had been runn ing behind the strong Ryan squad all season Twenty minutes after the gun had been fired. th1ngs didn't seem as clear cut as they had earlier that day. La Salle was runner up by three points and third was some forty odd pomts behind us. Nevertheless, the goal had been reached, our tradition continues.

The 1975-76 edition of the La Salle Bowling Team proved to be one of the better teams In the league this year. The team, led by All-Catholics John Henninger (180) and Rich Golden (178), rolled their way into a contending position, finishing second in the North. Tuesdays at Washington Lanes were never better.

For the past six months we spent threefourths of our days in an overgrown box known as the gymnasium. We started off right beating the city champs, and continued to win from then on. A bad game against Kenrick and two good ones against Judge and our goal of a Catholic League championship Is In sight. We worked hard and played well, remembering that we'll never get another chance. II was worth it. For tour years we worked and didn't regret a moment of it because we were La Salle.

63

Matty scored his 1OOOth point, white Joe Hand made houses in the corner and Cummings got ovations for his stick batt collection . We went to the Patestra on Thursday night against a strong Kenrick team .

On November 20, the 26th annual Father and Son Banquet was held at the Four Chefs Restaurant, (Of course, where else?). Th is year's banquet honored faculty members who were former La Salle students: Father Robert Breen, Brother Edward Cannon , Brother William Quaintance, and Brother Thomas " Doc" McPhillips. Master of Ceremonies for the affair was Francis Gleason, and the guest speakers were Dr. J . Gallagher and Dick Bedesem (football coach at Villanova). Of course, Brother Edmund was on hand once again to help distribute door prizes. Chairman Mario Cervone, Co-Chairman Ted Pizyblowski , and President Art Menno all agreed that the night was a success and enjoyed by all.

Tonight's performance represents a breakthrough for the La Salle Actors' Workshop, and we hope the La Salle community. OF \1\ICE A D ME deals with many tmportant themes - the American dream, the depths of love, and the cruel whims of fate. During the rehearsal period, our actors have dug into themselves and their experiences to turn what is fiction on paper into somethtng that lives on stage. Yet, in the end, it is the JOb of every actor, novice or professional.

Through the efforts of Mr. Braun and Br. Hilary, the Intramural Program ended with another successful season. Offering everything from pinochle to floor hockey, the intramural program has steadily increased over the past few years . Fierce competition was inspired in the homerooms, but all agreed that participation was what counted.

Thursday means Flourtown Lanes for over eighty members of the La Salle community. The bowling club, moderated by Brother Anselm Degan , IS a very popular outlet for the tensions that may have built up during the week. Although md1viduals sometimes shine through , the main goal is fun and all the teachers and students enJOY a good t1me.

From its new birth three years ago, the band under the direction of Mr C1ccimaro has progressed to be one of the most highly recognized In the area. Our year began with the preparation for the football games. Sitting In the stands sometimes in the bitter cold, giving our spirit to the team When Christmas time came around we had to work even harder. To prepare for our Christmas Concert, giving concerts for the elderly, which gave us a great inner satisfaction When the sprmg rolled around all of our attent1on was focused on the Spnng Fest1val. Tnis was our f1nale of the year. Be1ng In the band however, is not all work. There is a lot of time to do things with your friends , this Is what makes the year complete To work hard for a goal but to enJoy yourself domg it

路- SHADE In about a decade, La Salle's spring musicals have earned a reputation as being among the fines t in the city. From the ac ting to the scenery and special effects, almost everything about the play is of high quality, as viewers from previous shO\oTs can verify. Not surp risingly, then, the show has become a tradition here at La Salle. However, it is not only the efforts of the cast and crew, who have been \-lorking diligently since mid-August, bu路t the support of the entire student body that makes the show a success . This year's play is "110 In the Shade". It is the story of an unmarried ranch-girl (played by f路lary Hopper), whose town is suffering from a drought. The plot is dee pened by the arrival of a fake rainmaker (Ued Barth), who is interested in more than robbing ~he townsfolk out of money! 150

Think back a moment, to the t•me when you were a freshmen, trying to find your way around LaSalle. You looked up at the clock and realized that class had already started A late slip. The mam off1ce Mr D•ehl So you walked anxiously towards the office, and stepped ms1de And there you found a fnend A warm smile greeted your slow approach A smile that sa1d no matter what the problem thmgs would be all nght Four years later as you amble mto that off1ce, the same sm11e appears -still everything is all nght. For four years we have been at LaSalle. and for four years she has been the same Warm, helpful, understanding. always opening herself to the students' problems Not many people can g1ve a student a feeling of accomplishment just for putt1ng an announcement 1n the daily bulletin. Seldom do you find someone who cares about the cold which kept you out of school And never has anyone been able to put anxiety, tension, or bitterness completely to rest w1th one smile For years, Mrs. Lull has prov1ded Invaluable service to the faculty and the students. The extra that she puts Into her JOb, her personal touch and her wllllngess to help, make LaSalle a batter place for a Student to grow. In many ways she typifies what makes LaSalle so different from other schools. But now, as the ' 75-' 76 schools ends, LaSalle faces a major loss. To the regret of the entire school community. Mrs. Lull has decided to retire The office will never be ·the same. All of LaSalle would like to express Its deepest gratitude for her services and best WIShes for happiness in years to come. But perhaps if we ask her, Mrs Lull will leave us a lasting gift - one more smile to tell us everyth1ng is go1ng to be all nght.
