We are thousands of individual, unimportant moments, which, strung together, alter us. We have spent many uneventful days, lying in the sun during free periods, or bumming in the cafeteria, talking to others, or listening to raunchy stories by a cigar wielding janitor. Days have passed in class; we discussed current problems, or shared ideas and values with others. Essentially, though, the days have been filled with imaginative, creative people, who have opened us up to new thoughts. These people have offered us ideas and opinions, giving us a different perspective and a better understanding of the world. They have expressed an unique way of looking at ourselves in notes scribbled at the bottom of papers, or words spoken during retreat and involvement days, helping us to clarify our place in the present and our aims for the future.

Brother Tom McPhillips is both a thinking and a feeling man. In biology lab, he helped us discover the origins of life as well as the secrets of its many manifestations. Although biology is essentially a rational, scientific discipline, Doc opened our eyes to wonder, the wonder of discovery. As moderator of the stage band, Brother Tom has succeeded in molding diverse, individual talents into a tightly functioning unit, providing

the discipline necessary for a more effective release of ou r emotio n al and artistic energies. Teacher of a class on Death, T McP has said, " Even when we discuss death clinically, I still have to look out for a few tears from students." This, we think, best sums up Doc's character: the objective, rational gaze, the warmly sensitive human being. We thank Doc, and we'll miss him.

" ... The satisfaction comes not from merely doing a play, gentlemen, but from doing it well ... " Riding these words of our director, Mark McGovern, seventeen aspiring actors embark on an odyssey into the horrifying world of Nazism. 114; our stage under construction won' t be ready for another month yet. Initially, progress is pamfully slow, measured in gestures and linked phrases or exchanges; complete scenes are yet unexplored territory Our director prods us onward, " Come on gentlemen, we're just wasting our time if you don't give me total con centration". Everyone bears down, and as opening night draws closer, we can see the signs of a solid show developing. First one, then
The four performances go off with precis1on and few flaws and Mark is proud of our concentration. The aud1ence 1s pleased, and so are we. " It's your show now", our director tell s us, "you 've created your own version, and 1t was touching". The lights dim, then fade away on Von Berg on closing right, and a great experience comes to an end. Chris Crane even makes the cast nervous, as the worrisome Lebeau, and John Beggin is a forceful presence as the proud Bayard. Bob Straumann shows flair as the actor Monceau, and Joe Gallagher's intensity and emotion is unmatched as the tortured German major. joe Grace retreats into a shell to become the dignified, reticent Von Berg, and Paul McGinnis remains rational to the end as Leduc.

Until I'm standing on an icy Goodyear mat inside a dimly lit dressing room, wearing nothing but a jock and itchy long johns, hockey is only a pleasant memory. But everytime, surrounded by those long rows of bare lockers, panic bordering on terror surfaces, and always, it takes me by surprise. For a brief moment, my stomach tingles, splashing acid all around. Intestines melt, blood turns to water, muscles to Jello. Hockey fever. I go into a trance; my perceptions, and thoughts lose all objectivity. On the ice, the world becomes a surreal blur: grotesquely clad figures in violent colors move on the frigid canvas. My body performs automatically, without me. I am detached, at ease, no pain - my body is checked, crashes into the boards. Only the puck is clear; I can read the "Cooper" branded on its top as one of our defensemen - Dino, I think- winds up for a shot. The twine jumps in the back of the goal , and we raise our sticks in triumph. I feel it now, and I know why I'm there, why I accept the pain and fear and even the losses; because being part of this team is special, an intensely personal experience shared by twenty players. The fog lifts; now, I can really play hockey. Martin Grasmeder

BLOOD DRIVE
In December of 1976, the first annual LaSalle Blood Donation Drive was held in the school auditorium under the direction of Sister Gloria. The one day event was a result of weeks of hard work by Marty Grasmeder and the Future Physicians Club. One important aspect of the drive was the recruiting of members and donors by the club members. These donors consisted of their parents, relatives, neighbors, fellow students, and teachers. We hope that this will become a regular event in the LaSalle High School Calendar.

play's outset Chns Crane, as LeBeau, and John Beggin, as Bayard, are spolltghted as they attempt to reason their seemmglyunwarranted capture. Later, the principal roles of the drama shirt to Joe Grace. as Von Berg: Paul Maginnis, as Leduc, and Joe Gallagher. as the German Major. Together they queshon the meaning of life and survtvaJ in a merciless world, bnnging to light hard facts on the cruelty of the world's greatest of creatures, man. Effective Portrayals Shaking off a btl of early nervousness, the cast then went on to act in near-professtonal fashion . Chris Crane did a good job m both controlling and developing thc.> opening of the play. Hts experience in past La Salle productions showed itself well in the role of a very shaky and confused Jew. As Crane dominated the first part of the play, so Paul Maginnis dominated the second; where he showed excellent style in the role of a French Psychologist. ln a moving portrayal as an Austrian aristocrat, Joe Grace, too, exhtbiled a fine acting sense. Joe Gallagher, as a German Major, <his first rolel, very credibly portrayed a man torn between duty and conscience. Bob Strauman, Paul Cervone, Jerry Ross, AI Condello, Chris Pasture, and Mike Becker did fine jobs as member:. of the supporting cast in the fall production. Working behind the scenes, Production Manager Kevin ~fillet organized the closely-knit group of

July 4 - the trammg and the quest begin. Mental preparation began months ago. Confidence - maybe this will be the year we win back our championship. The sultry summer evenings fly by, four miles, six miles, eight miles, ten miles, eleven miles. We become lean and hard. Visions of Montreal gold move us. Visions of a November 13th championship drive us on. Tuesday and Thursday nights at LaSalle, down to the bridal path and back, weights, the dreams begin . August 29 - camp. Seven days in Adamstown, Maryland - depressingly bucolic - mile after mile of cornfields, cows and flies. Incessant sunshine- burning us and sapping our strength. Double workouts - twelve miles in the morning, six miles in the evening, only our retreat house resort sustains us. Soda and Volleyball. We hit the hills, Mar-lu Ridge, Sugarloaf Mountain and Catoctin Mountain. God, nobody can be working this hard. We have to win it. The seven emerge, survivors really - McGlynn, McCarthy, Heany, Hilpl, Connell, Marble and Rush. To them the mantle has fallen, the blue and gold LaSalle sweats, the sweats of Burns, Mohrbacher and Magarity, symbols of pride, class and above all, success. We leave Kansas. The season begi ns. Belmont Plateau . Two commands, set and the gun. We're off. Across the golden-brown fields of glory. Flagpole. Got to get out fast; go. Got to get established; now. Swift. Let's go. Pace, got to stay with it. Five-oh-one, five-oh-two. Into the w ilderness.
Darkness. A mountain looms the scene of a thousand deaths and a million defeats Parachute. Climb, climb. Oh, God. Down the hill. Fl~ . fly. Out of the wilderness. Faces. Words. Fl)- God gtve me the strength On the horizon the Philadelphia skyline, the Emerald Ctty. Fly. Onward. Now. The last hill Work, strength. There, the great ptllars of glory, monuments to a thousand agontes suffered, the finish. Fl) . God, God, God, God, oh God. It's over. We tear up the league. Bonner, St. james, O'Hara, North, Roman . They stare at us, our blue and gold sweats. " There goes LaSalle." We impress the plebes at Annapolis. Haveriord College is crushed. "You guys can be the best ever."

Illness and inJury strike A stone bru1se, a pulled musc le, a virus. We lose to Wood Off to Manhattan and the monsoons, a course for mudders - fourth place and tee-shirts; lucky to do that well. Back to Belmont, West, Neumann, McDevitt and Carroll fall. We capture the first place trophy at the Logan Street Run. Our confidence returns. Bring on Ryan. Our meet with Ryan is rained out. Back to Manhattan and Van Cortlandt Park for the Eastern Championships The top twenty-five teams in the East We get blown off the course - twenty-first place. Our heads hang. Ryan awaits. Illness strikes again . A twenty-four hour bug. We lose to Ryan narrowly. Back to the bndal path for speed - work. We can still win it - got to work. Catholic War Vets - one week before the Catholic League Championships. Georgetown first, Ryan second, LaSalle third. More speed - got to be ready. November 13. The day One hundred twenty-five individuals, seventeen teams, one goal. Our goal. A thousand dreams all m a row, all on the line. God, let us fly. It' s over in an instant. Our gold medal dreams evaporate. Fifth place - the worst LaSalle fin1sh of the decade. Shock. Utter silence. The world stops. There are no tears, there are no words, our feelings have plunged to depths beyond them. Why God, why? All the hours, all the hills, all the We couldn' t have. God, why? We run out the season . Personal bests, medals and troph1es around. We take first place at the McDevitt In\ 1tat1onal. All are hollo'"" triumphs. Fifth place - how can we live with it. Our season ends, over in an instant. Why? Tom McCarthy

Crew
The La Salle Crew Team has managed to make a strong showing recently, despite the fact that there have been three head coaches in as many years. The La Salle Varsity eight demonstrated their prowess by capturing last year's Catholic League Championship and by winning the first major regatta of 1977, the Bill Braxton Memorial.

The future of the team looks equally promising, judging by the impressive JV and novice teams. Perhaps the crew team will finally attain the recognition that it has long deserved. Few are aware of the burning agony that endured in the hundreds of miles of rowing and running . The reward for this is simply the act of competing, whether the results are victory or defeat. 145

That's why I took Accounting ... What English do you have this quarter? ... Hey Suds, you gonna do some Brewskies? ... Are you gonna see Springsteen at the Spectrum? . . . I hope it snows tonight because I have three tests tomorrow ... Case sure is a hunk ... What's the platter today? ... Geggieee ... Think anybody will go the prom with Gumbo? ...
