It is eight-thirty on the first morning of school. Amid the long, sharp shadows, a freshman leaves his schoolbus. He feels nervous and vulnerable; the environment is new, the people unknown. He has little idea what LaSalle is, nor does he know what it represents. At this point, he is concerned only with adjustment. At ten-fifteen, a group of sophomores sits in the brightly lit biology lab, waiting for Mister Viggiano. They've had him before, as a gym teacher, so they're aware of his helpfulness and relaxed demeanor - they know what to

expect. During this year, it will dawn on them that a large part of their intellectual life is shaped by the extraordinary faculty at LaSalle. Besides Vidge, they will come to share in the humor of Mister Manion, the concern and involvement of Mister Klenk, the intellectualism of Mister McCabe and the rest of the English Department, and the relaxed awareness of Brother Bill Riley, Mister Turk, and Mister Braun. A collection of unusually bright and friendly individuals. By one o'clock, the bulk of the school day is over. Six or seven juniors relax around a table by the windows in the cafeteria. Talk is of the past and of the present, of the summer and of schedules, classes and teachers. The juniors seated here are aware of their place at LaSalle. Two years have put things into perspective, and they are secure in this sense of belonging and direction. They know what LaSalle tries to do; they have seen the way it is preparing them, intellectually, emotionally and morally. They know the endpoint of this preparation is not college. It is something more important.

Thursday is the big test, and you know it's going to be impossible. Still, you study, even though the only hope you have is if everyone else does bad. and the teacher curves the test. Your fate lies in the failures of your friends, not the success of yourself, and for a few days the whole class is your enemy. On the surface you joke around act like nothing was wrong, but deep down you know what really is going on. You're being placed in a position you don't like, but know is inevitable. It's like enduring the pain at a dentist because you know it will pay in the long run. The night before the test you study until you can't bear it anymore, and attempt to go in early the following morning to get more done. For two reasons you never quite make it. First you sleep later than you planned. then you get to talking with a few friends, and before you know it, classes have started. When you get into class, the room is quiet, and you can sense the tension. A few last minute explanations are passed along, and then the test is handed out. You look down at the paper, check to see if you're in the right room, check to see if the right teacher is in the room, and then pinch yourself to see if you're awake. After a few minutes, you glance around the room looking for any confused faces. When you find one you feel a little better and go back to the test.

48

The next day, the teacher passes the tests back, and you find a "D" on yours. Most of the kids got close to what you got, but because a few did good, there wasn't a curve. When you look at the paper on the next desk, you see that he got an "A", and you've found the one who broke the curve. You're mad because he didn't leave a few questions blank, and bring the rest of the class's marks up without really hurting his own. Since there's no one else to blame your "D" on, you blame him. After class you walk up to him and say, "Thanks for destroying the curve, and by the way, are you coming to the party tonight?" He says "Yes", so you slap him on the back and say "See you later. " Until the next test, he's your best friend.

49

For many guys in the band, this is the first performance. They are nervous; they are afraid they might make a noticable mistake. They are not alone. There is no time to think about it, we are filing onto the stage. Our annual Christmas Concert is a bout to get under way. Tuning finished, Mr. Ciccimaro. our director, walks onto stage to a vigorous round of applause. He acknowledges the applause, gives a few preliminary remarks, and turns to give the downbeat, signaling the start of this year's concert.

Instruments poised, we wait for the signal to start "Great Songs of Christmas", our first piece. A few bars into the song, our nervousness is forgotten; only the music is remembered. We play it the way we have been practicing it for weeks, sans the stopping for errors. Practice the few weeks before the concert was at times unbearable - stopping every few bars, repeating the difficult parts, and starting the entire piece again. During each of these sessions, we may have completed only a couple charts, but we were beginning to perfect the performance. By the day of the concert, we were confident of our playing. We finish the first arrangement with little difficulty and few mistakes; we are applauded with fervor. We play the other compositions in our book, including "Sleigh Ride," "Winter Wonderland," and "Carol of the Drum," along with a tuba duet; we are applauded and are about to leave (so the audience believed) when we surprise them. We play accornpaniant to their part in "Christmas Sing Along". Later, the people tell us of the excitement they, and especially their young children, had in being able to participate. 51

YEARBOOK

For reasons unknown to me, the Yearbook Staff always seems to wait until three or four days before the deadline of each signature to really start working. As a result of this, we must consolidate what should have been two weeks work into a few days, culminating in a final project we refer to as the "Marathon". Soon after the eighth period bell sounds the end of the regular school day, the six or seven senior members of the staff trudge into the yearbook office on the middle of the second floor, knowing that seven more hours lay ahead - seven hours of sorting, cropping, counting, typing, and re-counting. As I begin work, I reflect on my reasons for joining the staff. The yearbook is unlike most other activities at LaSalle. Sports teams have weekly games by which to gauge their progress. The Wisterian, forensics, and the band all receive periodic feedback. In the case of the yearbook, though, all work is centered towards one, final event - the release of the yearbook. Our success rests not on a winloss record, but rather on the school's opinion of our 200-page representation of the 52

year 1977-78 at LaSalle. And our recognition, too, is minimal: a two-page spread and a list of names on the last page. Despite these apparent drawbacks, there is one basic reason for our working on the yearbook: we are seniors. We want to see that the book is done well, that it will be something we will always treasure, that the spirit and personality of the Class of '78 is accurately portrayed. It is now dark. Mr. Topper arrives with five Rizzo's pizzas and two "sixes" of soda. We take a break and talk about the new teachers at LaSalle. Sooner than we would wish, the pizza is gone and we must return to our chores. Marc develops 路 the last roll of film for the day, with Bill assisting. Ted types the Androcles copy, Rich and John lay out the Soccer and Stage Crew, and Mr. Topper tries to prevent the decline into chaos. Soon the last layout will be numbered and marked. We have met the deadline.

ANDROCLES AND THE LION

60

It's opening night, and I'm waiting backstage for my cue. I am tense, and eager to get out on the stage. This is what our months of rehearsal and preparation have been leading to. We started in late October with an outline of the concept of the play, and how we were going to present it. Rumors of a production "a la Star Wars" were confirmed, but Mr. McGovern's explanation emphasizing the timelessness of the conflict by setting it in the future, instead of Ancient Rome, as originally written by Shaw, assuaged my fears of the production being a cheap takeoff on the movie. With this philosophy in mind, we set about learning our parts and "blocking" the scenes, a sort of choreography of our movements and reactions to specific lines. Once this was accomplished for most of the play, we started to feel our parts out, memorizing lines and starting to develop our stage presence. When we are onstage performing, we must be in complete control of our characters. Onstage, we do not exist. Only our characters exist, and this is where is where our concentration has to be focused. As it is with many things, it was easier said than done. For a period, everyone stagnated, and nobody seemed to be able to concentrate his energies on his parts. As we drew closer to opening night, though, we were slowly transformed into a somewhat presentable show.

62

The lurking fear of doing a "turkey" (as it was so eloquently labelled by our director) had spurred us on like nothing else before. Getting makeup on for dress rehearsal was a tedious chore, even though all the actors had to do was sit there. We all had to run the gauntlet of makeup girls, each with her individual supply of heavy pancake, rouge, eyeliner, and that ghastly pink glop that passed for lipstick. For some of us, there was a special treat of mascara in our moustaches and beard stubble to make them stand out. Getting it off was even worse (trying to remember all of the places). and removing the mascara would have been easier done with sandpaper. There is a small crowd tonight, somewhat of a letdown, but our efforts must be as intense as if we are playing to a packed house. There's my cue. Ted Byrne

路'A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO FORUM''

66

THE

A funny thing happened on the way to the forum ... at least we hope so! SCENE 1 - The Dream The musical begins with an idea in the directors head. A shadow of a show yet to come, although it is still months and thousands of details away, the first wheels of preparation are turning. The crew is selected, all experienced and hard working and dedicated to making this show a success. Tryouts are next, the pressures of being alone. onstage. With the cast and crew complete we have taken our first steps toward the production. SCENE 2 - The Set Broken boards, loose nails, vacant tools, old curtains the stage is in a shambles. Schmitty and his crew h ave quite a task ahead of them. The blueprints arrive late and the work must be rushed. Long hours at school explain the mountains of empty pizza boxes and soda cans.

67

"These are supposed to be ROMAN PILLARS!", not yet, but soon we're sure. Pieces of completed set lie on the floor waiting to be fitted into the structure. The show is less than a month away and things are shaping up. Something slightly resembling a Roman Pillar seems to be on stage left. We can only hope ... and work. SCENE 3 - Props and Things If the set is on its merry way. where are the props? The crew has been anxiously awaiting the final list. Bil1 wonders what miracle, and how many phone calls, will produce a life-like plaster bust of Dominia, while Pat attempts to paint over 200 styrofoam balls. By the way, didn't somebody say something about old Roman luggage. (would you believe burlap bags over cardboard boxes), and a rubber chicken, not to mention a vial of mare's sweat? This is insanity! The lighting crew masters the difficult moods while spending most of the day residing in the flies high above stage. The art crew awaits final clearance to descend on the stage brushes in hands. while we create our clever marquee. Meanwhile, the costumes are on their way and for tomorrow only you can get two $3.50 tickets for only $2.30! Buy now and ask questions later. SCENE 4 - Rehearsals A rehearsal is defined as "a drilling or repeating for practice or future performance", not six hours a day of blood, sweat, and tears for five days in a row. Yet deep down we all know this is needed, and more, if we expect to call ourselves professionals and be proud of it. "The director Joe Urbanik (who's banik?) would like to see that scene once again ... please." 68

Tired moans are heard backstage as we run through what used to be our favorite scene. As midnight approaches we hear a mumbling in the distance ... "I think this show is going to be alright, special in fact." These are the words we have waited for, three long months. Now we are ready to go forth and conquer the audiences ... but first, some sleep is in order. SCENE 5 - The Curtain Opens Most of the kinks are worked out as we gather in the gym for notes before our opening. The ice is broken by Bill and Schmitty with something that resembled a standup comedy routine. After so many problems, sickness, and exhaustion the moment has arrived; reputations are on the line. The crowd is seated, the band begins. Pseudolus enters, the mask falls, the balls drop , and the audience roars with approval. We have a hit and we know it. The months of intensity amid exhaustion. the sweat amid the pride, the emotion amid the people, and the smiles amid the tears, have reached their climax. 69

I had worked on the lighting crew for a few previous LaSalle productions, but Androcles and the Lion was my first effort as lighting manager. My crew consisted of Steve PowelL Jim Mooney, and a few others who helped out in hanging and cabling the lights. George McMahon was the lighting designer - the person who draws up the lighting plan and the cabling diagram, directs us in aiming and focusing the lights, an d makes up cues to coordinate the lighting with the action of the play. Our job was simply to hang the lights, cable them, focus them. and run them for the performances. I received the plans six days before opening night. Five days before opening night the rented lights arrived. We worked feverishly for the next few days hanging and wiring the lights, fixing broken cables, and working out the neverending tech nical problems. We ran righ t down to the wire, addi ng final touches just hours before the play opened. At 7:45 the house was opened. From my perch in the balcony I could see that the house was filled to about half its capacity. I had hoped for more people, but that was not my concern. This was it, the culmination of all our efforts.

Everyone knew his part. The stage was set. the actors were ready, the sound was on standby and we were about to start. Steve and Jim were in the lighting cage standing by for my cues, which I relayed to them th rough an in tercom system. The music started. "Standby for house and warmers ou t," I said quietly into the headset. "House and warmers GO!" I watched as the stage faded in to darkness. "Standby cue one ... cue one GO!" An eerie blue ligh t filled th e stage exactly as we had reh earsed. From start to finish we ran like clockwork. Our efforts paid off not only in ticket sales but also in satisfaction. 70

August fifteenth seemed to come early this year. From the beaches and night life of South Jersey gravitated the nucleus of the 1977 Explorer football team to the practice fields of Cheltenham A venue. Rumors of our teammates progress reached even the most inattentive ears: "I heard Chris Meehan got really big." "Drifter is working out at the Nautilus." "Pryb was corning up for workouts at LaSalle, wasn't he?" Most of the rumors rang true. Tanned and well-conditioned, we were eager to prove ourselves after two months of disciplined training - Nautilus, sprints, and streetwork. Conditioning tests, physicals, equipment, and a warm welcome by Tex and Joe - it was here. Dave wins the mile handily, with Gils and Neal battling for second. The "child" benches everything but Colistra, but Espo rips up on the leg press and captures the weightlifting crown. This first day is easy compared to what lies ahead. In the sultry weather of late summer, with the smell of wet grass and halfshirts that can walk on their own, we submit ourselves to the bark and bite of two demented coaches, and a tobacco-chewing third. Coach Colistra takes the linemen and whips them into top form on "mama"; Coach Lough works with the backs and speaks of coordination and quickness; Coach Flannery expounds on ancient history and shows how an offense can be run all day on "just one more play". The first week thins out the inexperienced and unprepared. We get into a routine and try not to think too hard on why we're out here. While we practice, our minds are bent on three things - water, rest and the time till practice is over. With full pads in the morning we hit until our heads ring, but lunch gives us just enough time to recover so we can run plays in the afternoon. Lunch is the highlight of the workday. Everyone has his juice mix and container, while Chris Meehan and Jack McCann provide a shuttle bus to 7-Eleven for more substantial fare. For two weeks our lives are structured and evaluated on the football field. How well we measure up isn't determined until our first scrimmage. 103

CROSS COUNTRY

-

-.

_..

It was mid-July and Summer was just slipping in to its hottest part when neighbors' heads that had drooped, uninterested all summer long began to perk up in recognition of a phenomena that few of them could ever understand. The "runners" had hit the streets again; cross country season had begun again. Starting with three miles a day, we began a program of rebuilding - strength in legs that had lain relatively inactive for months, competetive pride in minds caught up in midsummer relaxation, but mostly a spirit of cooperation that had made us a team before and hopefully would do so again.

--

--

oJe

We all knew each other. We had been together before. Together we had seen dreams shattered and goals ruined. And so we tried to approach this season more cautiously, not wanting to be hurt again by hopes gone sour. But it was not to be. The enthusiasm was too great. We travelled to Adamstown for a week of preparation - our final week before the grind of the season

109

would begin. Alone together for a week, we amazed ourselves at how great we could be. In working out and in having fun, we showed how close to each other we were. Like never before, we were willing to work very hard and yet enjoy it completely. With the spirit that had grown there guiding us , we left Adamstown a team - a team proud and unafraid and looking for a championship. We opened the season by cruis'ing past Cheltenham, avenging last year's loss, an omen for the rest of the year. And so it went through the early victories over Dougherty, Bonner, Judge, and a host of other Catholic league rivals, races that provided little challenge. At midseason, we were undefeated, save for the Conrad Weiser Invitational, and growing steadily stronger. The stage was properly set for our showdown with Wood. In the early season, the young Wood squad had shown themselves to be the equal of any team in the league, registering victories over every team but LaSalle. Our meet with them would decide who would be established as the team to beat. Wood carne prepared and ran their best race of the season - unbelievable times for so early a meet. Yet somehow, the spirit that guided LaSalle welled up and poured forth and we won the meet rather easily. We had established ourselves. We had arrived. We went to New York and lost and then returned home and lost again, in a meet in which half of our team was sick or hurt. Then we lost another meet to local teams. 110

None of it mattered, though, for the next meet was with Ryan and to win that would set up the win that we all still expected in the Champs. Our fifth man dropped out, though, and we lost yet again, by a mere three points. We began to work especially hard. The drive to the championship was on. Our first speed workouts of the year came and went, the hills got higher and the miles got longer and it seemed an eternity before the Champs arrived. But finally they did, along with a sense of things coming to fruition. Our day had come at l ast and we arrived at Belmont with an unchecked enthusiasm. We saw the Freshmen and J.V. teams go down in defeat and it didn't bother us the slightest. Nothing now lay in the way of our goal. Our moment had arrived. But as the gun went off and the first mile of the race slipped into history, the blue-and-gold pack that had ruined so many opponents during the season did not appear. The dream evaporated into a fourth place finish. We huddled under the tree in silence and, with no dreams left to hang onto, we clung to each other and asked for someone to heal our wounds. But there was no comfort that day, nor any day later. The spirit had not been broken but it had been stretched to its limit and needed time to recover. We had little time left. Seeing little purpose, we ran out the season, unable to regain the poise we had once held. There were some excellent individual performances, lonely stars in a sea of black, but as a team we were unable to salvage a season that had once loomed so large. The spirit eventually grew again among us and perhaps once again a LaSalle team will pursue a championship. But, for the moment, the dreams are dead and the quest is ended.

November eleventh, the last Catholic League soccer game of the year. Thank God! Or should I? We haven't won a game yet and we're glad the season's over. We lost a lot of games by one or two goals. We almost won a couple of games. But almost doesn't count. The team sits in the locker room, getting dressed, mulling over the game. "Hey McCarth, how cold is it?" "It's freezin'." "Did ya hear Dougherty tied Ryan?" "Yeah, I guess we'll only lose three or four to nothing" "I'm glad this is our last game." "Yeah, me too." "OK, let's get down to the field to warm up." Walking down to the field, I think to myself fate has done a number on us. She hasn't rolled us a break yet. When does she join our side? I think it's due. As the game starts, we're in typical poor fashion, missing kicks, heads, traps, passes, no communication, no aggressiveness. But after ten minutes something goes wrong. We start making passes, talking, and playing the way we should have all year. "Bergy, get Pio!" "Schmidty, get the wing!"' Murph, get the

113

man coming down the middle!" We are finally playing like a team, instead of eleven individuals. But! But, Brian dives out of the goal to make a save and while he is recovering. the ball slips out of a crowd. It passes within a foot of five people. Score. Fate. But they can't do this to us, we're playing too well to deserve this. We just can't have a winless season my senior year. Now I realize what a do-or-die situation is. Within five minutes, Ben ties the game with a chip shot over the goalie's outstretched arms. Tied at one ... the only time that we are ever tied is when the game starts. Now. tied. A team that beat us earlier in the year. But can we keep it that way? At half

114

time it's still tied, and everyone begins to notice that it is quite brisk. But it's tied and we disregard the weather. We could win this game, and the thought warms us. Dougherty comes out hard; they could lose face if they lose to our " terrible team". But there is nothing they can do. We just aren't going to lose this game. But. oh God, no! A foul inside the penalty area, this is almost certainly a goal. An all-area player against poor Brian, oh please Brian, you've played fantastic up until now, please come through. Whump! There goes the ball towards the corner. I'm afraid not even God can save us. Well, it looks like the score will be two to one. Do we deserve this? I think not. Thwack! the ball and my heart at the same time. He missed, oh my God, he missed! Fate has rolled, or should I say, bounced our way for a change. With that shot goes Dougherty's chance of winning, they lose teamwork long enough for the game to finish. At the finale, twenty two weary bodies wander off the field. Were all those losses worth this tie? YES! 115

CREW

Over the past three years I've discovered that crew is more than just a sport. it's a learning experience. It isn't easy to go down to the river every day after school from February to May; it takes some self discipline. Rowing is hard. and I usually don't get home till six or seven. Then I eat, do a little homework and go to bed. Irs probably easier to just go home after school and "hang around", but it's better

to go down to the river and prove that I can do something. As a freshman, I found that one of the best ways to make friends was to go out for crew. I knew only a few people when I first started at LaSalle, but through crew I met many other people in the same situation, and eventually we became friends. 135

-

136

-

I enjoy rowing now, but at first it was uncomfortable. Coming home with stiff muscles and blistered hands was rough, but eventually they stopped bothering me and I began to enjoy rowing. I'd driven down the River Drives many times and watched the rowers, out in their boats. with wonder. How could they keep in time? How could those little boats slay afloat? Once I got involved I found there were simple answers to these questions, and the view from the river gave me a different conception of things I'd previously taken for granted. I got to know the river well, with all its bridges and bends and sandbars. Sometimes it was a tranquil. slow-running stream; other times a threatening, violently running river. I learned the good and bad features of the river. Crew involves not only rowing, but a lot of running too. One day a slow pace for long distances, the next an allout sprint over a short distance. I can remember running the "loop" twelve miles. One thing that helps get me through is knowing that everyone else is there with me. They feel the same pain I do when running and the same pride when we finished. To be able to discipline oneself in such a way will be valuable later on in life.

Many of my friends think that I'm crazy to be going down to the river on cold, rainy, days and not getting home til seven o'clock at night. I know what I'm doing is better than hanging around the neighborhood doing nothing. I'm accepting a little responsibility and pushing myself as far as I can go. By doing this I believe I'm preparing myself for the demands that will be made of me in the future.

Tennis

This year's tennis team is possibly the strongest in LaSalle's history. Returning from last year's Catholic League runner-ups are all Catholic seniors Catrambone and Mike Kelly plus lettermen Tom Check and Bernie Lopez. Tony Cilio is the only junior on the squad while the sophomores are represented by Steve DiPietro, Fred Mischler. Ftnd nrwr.omPr Vinr.r Rinto. A nationally ranked freshamn. twice a week at Whitemarsh Tennis Club for two months in the spring. Once the weather breaks, the team will begin practicing outdoors to prepare for our league opener against Dougherty in April. Last year we played most of our matches away because of the poor condition of our courts, however, this year the courts are supposed to be resurfaced at about the time the season gets underway. We hope to improve on last season's 12-2 record and finish the season undefeated. As of now. we see no reason why we can't win the Catholic League title, and barring any injuries. LaSalle will have its first city tennis championship team in almost thirty years.

143

144

BASEBALL The LaSalle Baseball Team of 1977 was excited in its victory, stoic in its defeat, and energetic in its play. We upset city champion Father Judge by a four to three score, but got clobbered by a mediocre Cardinal Dougherty, twenty to nothing. On the practice field, we worked. All through the season we tried to improve our execution of plays, and our efforts paid off in an improved second half record. The players were estatic when we beat Judge and all-Catholic pitcher Sean O'Neill in extra innings. The excitement generated by their teammates on the bench caused the starting nine to play above its natural talent. The winning run scored as the Judge third baseman, rattled by the LaSalle cheering, misplayed a slow roller. The coaches contributed every bit as much to the victory as the reserves, keeping the team on its toes and especially by saving our top starting pitcher for late inning relief work.

145

146

We almost danced at the thought of "inexperienced" LaSalle beating "seasoned" Father Judge. Our spirits, buoyed by the victory over Judge, were drowned in the pain of a twenty to nothing defeat to Cardinal Dougherty. Errors, strikeouts, and fat pitches were magnified by the dead silence of the LaSalle bench. It was a nightmare. After a Dougherty grand slam came three straight errors resulting in three straight runs. Ten nothing. Then Dougherty caught fire. Ten more runs. Joe and Dave were stunned by the game, but managed to save their comments till after the game. It was a matter of pride: we humiliated ourselves in front of a team of ordinary talent. Well. it was a twenty-nothing loss, but it wasn't the season. We went back to the practice field.

147

DEDICATION

I Four years ago, we knew him only as Bernie's brother - the well dressed guy with black-rimmed glasses and a distinctive smile. But the Lransition from freshman year to senior has brought many changes, one of them in our relationship with Mister Edward (Ernie) McCabe. It is no accident that this yearbook is dedicated to him; Eddie is one of the most respected and wellliked (obnoxious and disliked?) people at LaSalle, who has touched our lives both as a teacher and a human being. In the classroom, we travelled with Eddie from Macbeth to Marlowe, from Holden J. Caulfield to J. Alfred Prufrock. Always the master of hidden meanings, he showed us the symbols and subtleties that lie below the surface of great literature (whether they are there or not). He is sophisticated and

148

knowledgeable in the ways of language. In time, we too became sophisticated. Using English as his vessel, "E" sailed us past old horizons. He forced us to think, to probe, to discuss new worlds ... In the process, we gained glimpses into the exhuberance and tragedy of life. It was never easy, but then he never intended it to be. Eddie convinced us that knowledge cannot come solely from the outside; there must also be an internal element. This is the element he tried to awake. The dedicated teacher, however, is oniy one facet of Eddie McCabe. We will remember him not only for his guidance, but also for his warmth. "E" brought his pleasant personality to class every day, whether he was pretending to harass a student, telling stories, or lecturing on the arts. Sometimes he filled us with laughter; sometimes he burdened us with seriousness. But always, he showed us humanity.

The past four years have seen tremendous changes occur in us: changes in the way we' look, changes in the way we act, changes in the way we think. During these days of confusion and growth, we were fortunate to have a man like Mister McCabe helping us. Intellectual but never aloof, demanding, but never unreasonable. ironic, but never insensitive - he is an extraordinary teacher and human being. And though the expression may be a cliche, the man isn't. There just aren't many people like Eddie McCabe.
