The LoSollion quest being with a strange ritual known as Registration, which is overseen by the venerable leaders of this academic community. Following this ceremony, the new initiate is ready to begin his quest as a Freshman. In his travels, this newly quested student will hove to overcome such trials as Bro. Linus' typing class; tryouts for Tex's crack football squad; and possibly, yes, possibly, a trip into the dungeons of Mr. Diehl, from which few retum. Fortunately, the newcomer to the quest is wellprepared for any hardships he may encounter. (It is a rare occasion to see any Freshman without his large bag of supplies.) Also, he con always ask one of the more experienced questees for a bit of advice. Finally, if all else foils, the student can go to one of the omniscient sages in the Guidance Dept. for help, or maybe even to our exalted leader himself, Bro. Andrew.

The second leg of a student's journey is token as a Sophomore. Usually, the rood ahead will seem much brighter to the questee by this time, and he willloos· en h1s swordbelt and begin to enjoy the scenery for a change. Soon, however, this state of laxity will be put to on end. On a bleak, w1ntry, January morning, the questee is ambushed by the horrid pock of monsters known as the Mid· term Exams. These creatures leap out at the unsuspecting student from be· hind a pile of old textbooks, and engage him in combat. Most of the Sophomores defeat these opponents, but some, un· fortunately, don't fore as well. Those who ore victorious will continue down the path of academic life to be promot· ed to the next level of valour at LaSalle, that of the Junior.

During his time as a Junior, the stu· dent must overcome the most challeng· ing foe of all, the dreaded SAT. In order to gain passage over the bridge which this despicable creature guards, the questee must answer all of the ques· tions which the Skeleton of the Almighty Test poses to him . This is no easy feat . Most Juniors prepare themselves for this test by indulging in a rigorous pro· gram of self-improvement. They proc· tice exercises designed to strengthen vocabulary, sharpen mental dexterity, and hone mathematical skill. After this encounter, the Junior must continue to build a reputation of valour, courage, a knightly prowess if he wishes to be consid· ered as a member of the Greater Quest, that of College. In order to do this, the questee must perform heroic deeds (such as rescuing a damsel from a bor· ing mixer), defeat many evil opponents on sporting fields, and be a devout fol· lower of the Good cause.

12
13
Upon his completion of the Junior phase of the quest, the student may advance to the most exalted level a questee may attain, that of the Senior. Having survived the ordeals of life as a Freshman, a Sophomore, and a Junior, the student is not far away from the endpoint of his journey. The Senior must still, however, overcome a few more obstacles before he can fulfill his quest. These obstacles include journies through such places as the laboratories of the scorcerer known as Mr. Bruno, the lair of Mr. Russell's electronic behe路 moths, and the small kingdom of Mr. Roche, who can reduce the student's intellect to that of a child. All of these challenges, however, are easily over路 come by the Senior as he runs the final leg of his quest. By early June, the ques路 tee senses that his goal is very near. He dons his ceremonial robes, and sets out on the final stage of his journey. Soon he arrives in a great, open field, where he finds many of his fellow questees. At the head of the crowd stands Bro. Andrew. After a few long incantations by our fearless leader, the first Senior comes forward. Then, one by one, the Seniors receive from Bro. Andrew the final object of their quests - the LaSalle College High School Diploma.

The 1984 Blue and Gold is dedicated t o Brother Fronk Danielski, La Salle's omnipresent teacher, drill seorgent, school administrator, and guidance counselor. Brother Fronk ploys a distinct role in the business of educating at La Salle College High School. Incoming freshmen quickly learn of his identity, but upperclassmen, familiar with his unique style, more fully appreciate Brother Fronk's efforts. He is stern yet coring; demanding yet not uncompromising; tough yet playful, and always a Christian. Brother Fronk is a teacher. Brother Fronk occupies his time with coordinating academic rosters, helping plan and supervise after-hours affairs such as Open House and the senior graduation ceremonies, sitting in on other teacher's classes, teaching on honors Religion course, and even mo路 derating the lunchroom. As the VicePrincipal of Academic Affairs, Brother is known for his excellent timing; while
strolling the halls he uses his wit to put wayward students bock in their place. Brother Fronk Danielski is of benefit to the La Salle community in two ways. First, he pushes students to remember their social, academic, and Christian responsibilities. He is a much-needed spark plug for sometimes weary minds and consciences. Second, Brother Fronk is a model for La Salle students. His sense of seriousness, his wit and poise, his superior intelligence, and his concern for his students all make Brother Fronk on excellent school leader, as well as a devoted Christian to be emulated.
... A disciple is not above his teacher, but every well-trained student will be like his teacher ... (Luke 6 :40)

ADMINISTRATION The leader of the quest is Brother Andrew Bartley. His constant, reassuring presence inspires our teams to victory His father 1moge completes the family atmosphere at LaSalle. We ore truly lucky to hove a worm-hearted, coring Principal like Brother Andrew
Brother Frank Danielski always has a worm response for the students. As Vice-Principal of Academic Affairs, he is the one to see to drop a course, even though he probably won't let you . Unfortunately brother hasn't realize that the wet head is dead . Mr. David Diehl is the local heavy at LaSalle. As Vice-Principal of Student Affairs, he still has a good rapport with the students. Sometimes in a student's life at LaSalle he will receive a little note requesting his presence in 0 2 office .
Brother Andrew Bartley, Principal: B.A. Catholic Universtty, M.A. Untverst ty of Pennsylvania.
Mr. Edward Klenk continues his excellence as Director of Maintenance. His noteworthy snow removal process has mode 1t possible for the ice hockey team to practice in the park1ng lot. Remember his motto. "If you hear a klink, call Mr. Klenk." Mr. Charles Hilpl is our behind-the-scenes Business Manager. Even though his job~ behind the scenes, his presence is always felt and appreciated. The secretaries who keep the paperwork moving include
Mrs. Helen Gallagher, Mrs. Rosalie Comerford, Mrs. Mary Kay Mullen and Mrs. Patricia Schaum. They ore known for their comforting smile when you get your umptenth late slip.

Mr. Edward McCabe: English I, IV. B.A. LaSalle College, Ed.M . Temple University.
ENGLISH Mr. Michael "Oe dipus" O'Toole has the luxury of teaching all Senior classes. That is the privilege of being the chairman of the English Deportment. He has the unique ability to make conflicting statements sound right (but only in his mind). He even started o day core center for the teachers' children. Mr. Edward Molush has aspirations of becoming on actor. His performance of Romeo in Romeo and Juliet has won him school-wide acclaim. As o teacher, o coach, on actor and o wonderful storyteller, he odds o further range to the spectrum of La Salle. Mr. Be rnard McCabe, the English Whiz, con often be heard yelling at sophomores, or Charlie Karstens, whichever. Mrs. Clore Brown, is one of the kindest teachers at La Salle, although she suffers from froshitis, o threatening disease to the central nervous system caused by the effects of teaching frosh year in and year out. "Hiya!" Mr. Edward McCabe is the fastest English teacher at La Salle. He has to be with teaching the incorrigible Frosh and the exuberant Seniors. We ore happy to hove o teacher of his caliber at La Salle. He has even brought fame to La Salle by running the Philadelphia Marathon in a day.
Our heart goes out to Brother David Rogers because he only teaches freshmen. He must hove gotten on the wrong side with Brother Fronk. We hope that the crime fits the punishment. Maybe Brother will hove better courses next year. Mr. Dennis Barone, one of the new breed of little big men on campus, has undertaken the arduous task of teaching sophomores and juniors lnglische.

MATHEMATICS
Mr. James Roche has taken over the responsibility of Chairman of the mighty Moth Department. He teaches a broad spectrum of math courses at La Salle, and we only have one suggestion for him: Oil that chalk!!!! Our resident football coach (frosh division) is Broadway Joe Radvanski, but in the classroom he stresses "a good notebook" or that "you gotta do your homework." Gosh darn it guys, let's get radical. Brother Kevin Mc:Monus, F.S.C. Physical Science, Algebra I, II. B.A., M .A La Salle College. M .S. University of Pennsylvania.
Mr. Michael Ponisciak is the Math Man. Statistically speaking, he's one of our best. By the way, do you like your picture in the yearbook this ye a r? Mr. John Frizalone always contributes his unique teaching methods to the Math Department . This newlywed should be able to add a new "pep" to Mathmotics. Now, if we could only get him to close his classroom door .. .
Mr. Jame• Roc:he: Chairman, Mathematic:• Department: Algebra I, II, Calculus AB, BC. B.A., M.A. La Salle College. M.S. University of Notre Dome.
Ms. Maureen Dugan: Algebra I, II. B.A. Chesnut Hill College, M .A. Villanova University.

Mr. Michael A. Ponisciak: Algebra I, Statistics, Moth Analysis I, II. B.A., M .S. University of Pennsylvania M .S. Villanova University.
Mr. James Bradley, Jr.: Algebra II, Geometry. B.A., M .A.T. Brown
University. Moderator of Mothletes.
Miss Maureen Dugan has helped to fill the vacuum created by the departure of Mrs. Smith. Her competency and compassion remains a quality which will enable her to cope with her freshman and sophomore classes.
Mr. John Fri:~talane: Consumer Moth, Geometry with Trigonometry, Calculus. B.A. Temple University.
Even though this is Mr. James Bradley's first year at La Salle, his long experience in teaching is evident. He tokes over the Geometry classes and moderates the menacing Mothletes. Mr. Timothy McNamara has filled in wherever he is needed this year in the Moth Deportment, and Broadway Joe has even impressed him into coaching football. At last he found somebody . .. Brother Kevin McManus, after a one-year hiatus, has returned to La Salle as a Moth and Science teacher. His ability to get along with students is widely known. It is easy to toke notes in Brother's class because he tends to repeat himself ... tends to repeat himself . . . tends to repeat himself ...
Mr. Timothy McNamara: Analytical Geometry X, Geometry. B.S. LaSalle
College.

SCIENCE Michael Bruno. As head of the mighty science deportment, Mr. Bruno shows his ability as a leader and a competant teacher. He equips his students with a thorough understanding of chemistry. When he demonstrates pyrotechnics, it adds a spark to class. Anthony Viggiano is our fast-moving, fast-talking biology teacher. His warm personality is well known at La Salle. His presence at athletic events as trainer adds reassurance and security to our athletes. You can see Mr. Vig. before school in the parking lot as the parking attendant.
Mr. Anthony J. Viggiano: Physical Science, Biology. B.S. West Chester University. Athletic Trainer.
With the constant changes in physics teachers, Miss Lor路 ra ine Rimert is the anchor in this course. Her compassion for her students can be detected quickly in her style of teaching. The major question people ask about Miss Rimert is if she has a home because she is always at La Salle. Her dedication as Audio-Visual Director is touching. Robert Russell has given up all of his physics classes except the honored AP Physics class to devote his academic time to the computer. You can commonly see him in the computer room, always.
Mr. Michael J. Bruno: Chairman, Science Deportment, Chemistry, AP Chemistry. B.S. LaSalle College, Ed.M . Temple Unive r:.ily, M.S. St.

Michael Sheehan, or should we soy "Brother Mike". The Chem-mon and this year he's added physics. Yes, "Brother Mike" odds his original sense of humor to senior retreats. Brother Talbot Ramsbottom, the Colvert Hall Connection, brings his biological knowledge to La Salle. He con often be seen taking his classes outdoors, wondering around our compus and exom1ning trees, shrubs, and flowers. Hey Brother, will Botany be on elective next year?

Miss Julia Maher is helping out Mr. Russell teach students about computers. She mostly teaches frosh, but she should soon gradate to teaching the better students. Mr. Gerald Evans has replaced Mr. Bounomo who entered medical school. Some might hove read about his experiments in the Wisterian. Some soy that he looks like Opie T oylor or Richie Cunningham but we don't believe that, do we?

RELIGION
Brother Thomas Speakman, F.S.C.: Religion I, II, World Cultures. B.A. St. Francis College. lntramurals Director.
Mrs. Murial Mehr is one of the kindest teachers at LaSalle. Her position as chairperson of the religion department and her teaching of a wide range of religion courses makes her an asset to LaSalle. We are glad to have a warm-hearted person like her. Mr. Patrick Devine's casualness in matters dealing with today's youth makes for a successful marriage class. His interesting stories about his sister make us wonder if these things really happen to her. We learn alot in his class. One day he taught us how to operate a chain saw. We are glad that he doesn't go off on tangents. We would like to clear up a misnomer of Mr. Devine . He does have a driver's liscense, like his wife. Even though Mr. Stephen Krol has been at LaSalle for only two years, he has filled the halls with music. His forceful voice just doesn't teach the class Spanish and religion, but the entire school as well. He has been bucking for Mr. Diehl's job with his own style of detention.
Mr. Patrick Devine: Marriage. B.A., M .A. Villanova University. Junior Counselor, Cross Country Coach, Track Coach.
The goodness in Bro. Brendan Garwood's heart is very abudont. Now relieved of his western civilization duties, he con now spend his extra time teaching religion and organizing
C. S.C. Aloha, Brother. It has often been said that Bro. Aloysius Lumly has the skinniest shoes on campus and can be proud of his and our championship golf team. Fore! Mr. Alfred Puntel has the tough job of teaching morality, or any other kinds of morals to Juniors. He stands tall among the faculty at LaSalle. Brother Thomas Speakman teaches religion and world cultures and is never too busy for "Hi, fellas!" He has also made intramurals some of the best activities at LaSalle.
Brother Brendan Garwood, F.S.C.: Religion II. B.A., M .A. LaSalle College, M.A. Villanova University. Moderator of Community Service Corps, Undercloss Retreat Coordinator.

Mr. George Hohenleitner, German I, II, Ill, IV. B.A ., M .A ., La Solie College.
30
Mr. James Serpiello, Spanish IIX, Ill. B.A. La Solie College.
FOREIGN LANGUAGES Mr. David Manion ascends to the coveted position as the chairperson of the Foreign Lanugage Department. His ability to speak the French Language is commendable. Because of his ascension to power he also receives a new staff cor. Hove fun with your new red Rabbit. Mr. George Hohenleitner has the monumental task of teaching all of the German classes. We will miss him teaching some religion courses but his God-given talents were needed elsewhere. This is a great loss to the religion department. Even though Mr. Stephen Krol has been at La Salle for only two years, he has filled the halls with music. His forceful voice just doesn't teach Spanish and Religion classes but the entire school. He has been bucking for Mr. Diehl's job with his own style of detention.
Mr. James Serpiello is the quick Spanish teacher. We compliment him on his unique talent for teaching Spanish. We ore proud to hove him on our staff. Brother James Steck has the difficult job of keeping the Forum in line and teaching the underclassmen French. His years as o Vice路Principal at a military high school con be seen in his unique style of teaching. His kindness is an example of the faculty's friendlin ess. Mrs. Linda Donahue is one of the nicest teachers at La Salle. She cares for her students. This is evident. We thank her for the warmth she brings to La Salle.
Mrs. linda Donahue, Spanish I, II. B.A. Chesnut Hill College.
Mr. James Devine, the P.R. man at La Salle, who excels in the teaching of Spanish, con often be found (or not found) t aking trips to Spanish-speaking countries and elementary schools. Brother William Riley, the sweater man, is our highly respect ed tennis coach. Brother Bill brings his original jokes to his Spanish classes as well as on abundance of verdad. Mr. William Geiger's unending, tireless work for the yearbook and Wisterian is greatly appreciated. His totalitarian control of the true La Salle journals remin ds us of 1984. Big Ziggy is watching you!!! I would write more, but my son's birthday is today.

Brother Kevin Dol masse, F.S.C. A.P. European History. B.A. La Solie College, M.A. Georgetown University. Assistant Forum Moderator.
Social Studies The yearbook staff would like to retract the erroneous statement in lost year's book that Mr. Joseph Colistra discusses why the football team lost lost Saturday's game. What we meant to soy that his range of class topics ranges from Wendlum's theory about cop1tolsim to his experience as a rebellious youth to his role as o chaperone at the Senior Proms. His colorful character odds spice to a class. Nice beard! Nice glosses! Nice t1e! Th1s 1s Brother Kevin Dalmasse's first teoch1ng assignment as a new Brother, but he is not new to the LaSalle Forum. His triumphant return has provided his expert advice to the debating team and stunned his naive European class with brilliance. We ore indebted to Mr. John Grace for g1ving us some catchy sayings: "Expand on that", "I like that", "Here's the way I env1sion it". (We con thank Mr. Groce for his efforts in bringing LaSalle's stage bock to life). But we would like to introduce Mr. Groce to a new book.lt is called Real Men Don't Wear Plaid. Mr. Thomas Turner continues to show he is not just a dumb jock. He also has a mind. He even teaches His unique strut and personality bring laughter and joy to LaSalle. Mr. Gerald Miller, who is Doctor Spirit, has expanded his _oSolle influences to the holt patrol. Beware, no floor is safe from "Uh, Fe lias .. . disappear". Mr. Miller has earned the 路espect of many by the improvements he has mode in our 5tudent Council. Thanks for Hazard, Mr. Miller. Mr. Joseph Parisi adds his talent to both the academic and Jthletic spectrum at LaSalle. His jovial spirit odds friendship to 路he rigorous atmosphere . We are lucky to have a man like Mr. 'arisi. Mrs. Doris Daly and her mobile office helps the wise fools get over their problems. We should give a lot of credit to Brother David Rogers and Mr. Joseph Parisi because they hove to help the Frosh to gain personalities, among other things. THE TRUSTED BOARD
Lo Solie College High School Board of Trustees, 1983-1984: Left to Right; Bro. J. Patzwoll, FSC, Bro. E. Mollenhauer, FSC, Mr. C. Hilpl, Bro. R. Sterner, FSC, Mr. W. Vincent, Bro. F. Danielski, FSC, Mr. D. Diehl, Mr. E. Hansen, Mr. J. Blount, Mr. D. Lintner, Bro. D. Prendergast, FSC, Bro. L. Maher, FSC, Mr. T. Gola, Mr. J. Metzger, Bro. A. Bartley, FSC, Bro. R. Kestler, FSC.
The Boord of Trustees of LaSalle High School, consisting of fifteen men, meets periodically to guide, in on official way, the affairs of our school. The Boord is composed of eight laymen and seven brothers who volunteer their time to govern LaSalle. In its second year of existence, the Boord is responsible for LaSalle's direction and is now chiefly concerned with the financial and legal offairs of our school. Its principal concerns ore the financial stability, future planning, and the development and use of the school's properties. The Boord is headed by Brother Richard Kestler (chairman) and our principal, Brother Andrew Bartley (president.) Each member of the Boord serves for a three year term. They bring with them vital talents and knowledge which they contribute to the Boord and the school. Since the issues brought before the Boord ore diverse and often complicated, the Boord is broken down tnto several committees. Among these ore: the
42
Financial Committee;, the Development Committee, the Building and Grounds Committee, and the Nomination Committee. Each of these committees meets as often as needed to address the issues under its jurisdiction. The Financial Committee gathers the expertise from the Boord to manage the budget and determine tuition costs for the coming year. The Development Committee is aimed at long-term development and soliciting funds for capitol expenses and endowment. The Buildings and Grounds Committee is responsible for the upkeep and utilization of the school buildings and the surrounding acreage. And, the Nomination Committee meets to approve the selection of nominees to the Boord. As these committees attock their own issues, they report to the entire Boord which meets four or five times a year. There, they shore their findings and discuss any immediate issues. Most issues brought before the Boord ore voted on on passed by a two-thirds majority. While the Boord's responsibilities ore
addressed mainly in these committees, they also hove jurisdiction over various school committees such as the Academic Council. This Council, consisting of Brother Andrew, Brother Fronk, Mr. Diehl, and the heads of each deportment, determines the curriculum for the coming year. This year, the Council has added Computer Literacy for freshmen, American History I for sophomores, and a new geometry course aimed at juniors. As a result of our separation from the College two years ago, a Boord of Trustees become necessary here at LaSalle. Both institutions felt that the separation would be mutually beneficial in that each would receive the proper attention it required. This has proven to be true. Brother Andrew described the Boord's current success as "a tremendous encouragement and on admirable form of service given by men who wont LaSalle to continue its tradition of excellence!"

James Devine spent September through the end of January visiting close to 90 Grode schools recruiting "future frosh." And, in the months remaining, the Deport· ment has spent much of its time preparing for next year's visitations. Every year, most schools request a presentation on the cur· riculum and atmosphere of LaSalle, so it is no wonder that school visitation tokes up most of the time of the Deportment. But, the Admissions/ Public Relations Deport· mentis multi-faceted, concerned with such things as the organization of the open ad· mission process, coordination of the open house, the principals' dinner in November, the school calendar, and the production of the Blu e & Gold Line . This newsletter reaches students' homes, grade schools and teachers here at LaSalle. The newslet· ter is a trionnuol synthesis of the major happenings at LaSalle . It is a major form of communicating school happenings, as ore local community papers and the Catholic Standard & Times . While most schools know the quality of LaSalle, there ore some schools whose initial contact with LaSalle occurs at one of Mr. Devine's school visitations. But, Mr. Devine is no stranger to this work. From 1977 through 1981 , Mr. Devine was the head of the Deportment. And, he is assisted by Mr. James Serpiello, Mrs. Mary Kay Mullin, the Articulation Committee, and senior Brian Longe . Though the work is hard, Mr. De· vine finds it " rewarding and challenging" in that he is sometimes LaSalle's first influence on a grade school and its students.

WITH NEW AND EXCITING PROGRAMS
Elected May of lost year, the leaders of this year's Student Council include President Rich Van Fossen and VicePresidents Jim Lynn and Steve Hladczuk. These three students were indeed appropriate for the job. All three have been involved in such school activities as Cross Country, the Wisterian, Swimming, and lntromurols. All being respectable students as well, the party indeed possesses the attributes of leadership needed to improve LaSalle. In order to prepare for their important yeor in office, the three officers traveled to Shippensburg State University last summer to attend the Pennsylvania Association of Student Council's weeklong workshop. The workshop saw 109 students involved in student council from their own respective schools gather to learn how to delegate authority, motivate people, run a meeting efficiently, and to raise money through fund-raising activities. In the President's words " ... lost year's party of Junker, Harris, ond Justice lit the spark to more school spirit, and we hove attempted to increase this to a flame." In their attempt to increase school spirit, Van Fossen, Lynn, and Hlodczuk have tried to develop a sense of pride among LaSalle students through interaction with others. This has been concentrated in five important aspects of student life: intellectual, athletic, social, spiritual, and financial.

In covering these five important areas, the party has worked close with Brother Fronk and student council moderator Mr. Miller. As a result of this combined effort and open communication between the faculty and students, many changes and improvements have occurred. The Student Council Newsletter, the first in LaSalle's history, has pro路 vided athletic results for students and faculty as well as news on upcoming social events and planned activities. Five successful donees hove provided LaSalle students with many practical commodities to aid in on Explorer's education. The Student Council's valuable financial gains were also sent to help the Brothers working in Guatemala. School spirit was also increased as busloods of students traveled to various athletic events. Furthermore, a more active Student Exchange program was undertaken and proven successful as LaSalle students met and worked with others in on atmosphere of respect and growth. As it clearly can be seen, Van Fossen, Lynn, and Hlodczuk have begun to increase the flame into a fire of school spirit at LaSalle. Through much time and hard work, the Student Council has provided students with the opportunity to learn, improve, and grow. It is hoped that LaSalle will obtain the needed order to carry out the school philosophy of the integrated person and responsible citizen.

ART CLUB PAINTS LA SALLE BLUE AND GOLD Under the moderation of Mrs. D1one McGovern, the Art Club has contributed a great deal to the LaSalle community over the post year. The most noteworthy of these contributions is the mosaic of St. John Baptist de LaSalle which hongs in the first floor corridor, and also graces the cover of this year's Blue and Gold. The mosaic was finished by dedicated students over the summer of 1983. The second major project which the Art Club is currently undertaking is a mural of school sports and activities which is being pointed on the wall outside the cafeteria . The club hopes to hove the mural finished by next September. Through these and other art-related endeavors, the dedicated members of the Art Club contribute some of their time to help brighten up the hallways of LaSalle, and help to diploy to visitors the great wealth of talent present at the school.

Under the leadership of a new moderator, Mr. William Geiger, the Photo Club set out to toke a more"act ive" role in the LaSalle community. The results of this plan were admirable. Many of the pictures highlighting the Blue and Gold, as well as the Wisterian, were taken by Photo Club members on assignment. In preparation for their photographic duties, the club members conducted a number of discussions on camera techniques and darkroom procedures. The darkroom at LaSalle is open to the club, allowing the shutterbugs to practice the ort of developing their photos. Several field trips were also held, providing the camera enthusiasts with a chance to capture the beauty of nature on film. Through its increased role at LaSalle, the Photo Club offers those students proficient with a camera the opportunity to contribute their talent to the school community.

Retreats Bring Students Brother Brendan Garwood and Father Paul Wierichs have conducted the underclass retreats this past year. Each year the students make a religious retreat to the Brother's house for reflection and hopefully the growth of their own personal relationships with God. From the beginning, it has been the school's policy to guide the student towards a higher relationship with God. The retreats offer the student the opportunity to advance his relationships with classmates, as well as with himself. While Father Paul conducted the Junior retreats this year, Brother Brendan moderated the Freshmen and Sophomores in the theme of the "growth of Christ." However, all retreats follow a consistent format on films, discussions, confessions, and Mass. The discussions are conducted with the aid of twenty-five seniors who share their values and experiences. Wit h these discussions, students are allotted time for private prayer and reflection, as well as liturgical prayer, and the opportunity to build stronger relationships with fellow students.

As in years post, a Senior Retreat was held at the Cardinal Spellman Retreat House, a facility directed by the Possionist Fathers. This peaceful occomodation is located in Bronx, New York. When thinking of the Bronx, a picture of dangerous slums is conceived. But the retreat house is situated in a natural and serene environment; it rests on the verdant bonks of the Hudson River. Such beautiful surroundings provided a relaxed atmosphere for the seniors, allowing them to concentrate on the meaningful discussions presented. Introduced by Father Paul and various other religious, these discussions enabled the upper clossmen to reflect on their relationships with God, family, and friends. They also contemplated the maJor decision involving their plans after graduation that soon hod to be resolved. All in all, the retreat was very beneficial for the seniors. It catered to their spiritual needs while allowing them time to relax. Providing o welcome break from school, the first retreat was token during the middle of the week in October. Intimate conversations, movies, confession, Moss, and recreation periods contributed to the personal growth experienced by each senior after participating in the retreat. What was initially thought of as o waste of time, was soon regarded as a rewording situation.

WIS MAKES A GRAND COMEBACK
The 1983-84 school year was one of the best yet for the Wisterian and its staff. Some thirty students strong, and with a new moderator, Mr. Geiger, the Wiste rian has seen some significant improvements. With larger issues and a better format, this year's Wiste rian has done itself proud. It has added social cartoons and a feature column, whereby a non-member of the Wisterian staff con write a feature article. Besides these additions, this year's paper has ousted the listless rock news section and the controversial, often disagreed upon movie reviews. According to Mr. Geiger, the goal of the Wisterian is to "inform the students about the activities and report the news of the school, and to exert a positive attitude about La Salle on the community at Iorge." This year's Wiste rian has been more focused on the life at La Salle. Brother Tom Speakman, the intramural moderator, says that the Wiste rian is most helpful in compiling up-todote statistics on homeroom standings in inter-class competitions. Since athletics ore on integral port of La Salle, it is no wonder that the sports section is one of the most popular features in the Wiste rian. The quality of this year's sports section is largely credited to sports editor Pot Timony and his highly talented sports writers. But we should also mention the other editors who hove mode our school newspaper a most enjoyable port of the La Salle curriculum . The editor-in-chief of this year's Wiste rian was Lance Krelovich and his page editors were Carmen Petruzzelli, Chris McCauley, and Pot Durbin . These editors greatly contributed to the making of this year's Wiste rian so successful. And lost but not least there is Mr. Geiger. Geiger, who has hod previous experience working on a newspaper, has done a commendable job in his rookie year as moderator of the Wiste rian.

INTRAMURALS GET STUDENTS INVOLVED The goal of La Salle High School's intramural program IS for those students not participating in the Varsity athletics to toke port 1n healthy, non-pressured athletic competition between homerooms. And this year's program has been o success, with roughly 60% of the student body participating in everything from Basketball to Tug-of-War. Among the most popular events at La Salle ore basketball, football and hockey. However, Brother Thomas Speakman, the intramural moderator, claims that for those who dare to risk life and limb to participate, wrestling is the most fun. The Intramural program pits home-

They ore symbolic of hard-work, spirit and teamwork; something one con be proud of when walking the halls of La Salle. The introduction of the shirt is one of the improvements Brother Tom has mode since he took over the intramural program three years ago. Thanks to him, this program is the longest running event here at La Salle, lasting from the first week of school until the lost. Hawever, Brother Tom is not alone in the
management of the program; at the beginning of the year, each homeroom elects on intramural representative. These students help settle disputes, and inform classmates of standings or upcoming events. As w1th any event, intramurols revolve around student participation . It is those who lug tons of equipment on the buses, through rain, through snow, and gloom of morn', who enjoy the program the most. And with each passing year, the intromurals hove become more fun more competitive, and hove become a mainstay in the La Salle curriculum.

Fall Drama Returns
La Salle's abandoned tradition of staging a fall drama has been renewed th1s year with the product1on of William Shakespeare's classic tragedy, Macbe th. Despite the apprehensions of teachers and students alike, many of whom adamantly protested that Shakespeare IS just too great an undertaking for a high school to handle, Macbeth was a somewhat unexpected success. Directed by Mr. Peter Doyle and produced by Mr. Joseph Ciccimaro, the two multi-talented pros who contributed their invaluable support and direction to produce last year's Fiorello, Macbeth made for an evening of thrills, suspense and excitement, if not totally for the audience, at least for the cost and crew. Many people of vonous ages were interVIewed, and said they were surprised and Impressed by the performance of the "cast of few". Most of the students of h1gh school age and younger said they were surprised to find they understood the plot very well, with the obvious exception of some of the Elizabethan dialogue.

La Salle Stages MACBETH
Well, it con only get better
Ugly, Aren't they?
But I should hove been MacBeth!
It is regrettable that so few students turned out for the auditions. For one thing, it is difficult to stage a play like Macbeth with only a handful of actors; but more importantly, the experience of the stage is o totally unique one, something t hat can't be felt anywhere else; it is o special kind of excitement that can't really be expressed in words. There is o certain atmosphere, a "magic" in o way, and everyone knows that each person is equally necessary. Even the least skilled amateur, with the smallest part, feels something that the "ordinary person" con never know. In the beginning, the cast is simply a group of people gathered to accomplish o common goal, but when the show is over, they have become a family, brothers and sisters, bound by strong ties of friendship that will lost the rest of our lives. Although some kill joy critics (I won't mention any names, Mr. Russell, Brother James . . . ) still profess their belief that Shakespeare is too great a challenge for a high school, there are quite o few well-satisfied actors and crew members who strongly disagree.

Seniors Survey Schools on College Day
Early in his final year at LaSalle, a senior must make one of the most important decisions of his high school career, that of which college to attend. In on effort to inform the seniors on the choices that they hove, LaSalle sponsors a College Fair Day each year. This year, it was held on October 5, and representatives from over thirty schools were present. Students set up interviews with representatives whose college they were interested in. During these meetings, the students were provided with some general information about the school, as well as a frank view of their chances of acceptance into the school. Many thanks to Brother John D' Alfonso for another successful College Fair Day.

MOTHERS CLUB SHOWS LOVING SUPPORT In May of 1983, this year's Mother Club officers were elected . Elected as President was Mrs. Matthew Giuffrida; as Vice-President Mrs. John Farris; as T reosurer Mrs. James Me Iinson; as Corresponding Secretaries Mrs . Joseph Gindhort and Mrs. Anthony Tripodi, and as Recording Secretory Mrs. Kenneth Stout. The moderator is Brother Fred Stelmach. One of the Mothers' Club's major goals was to hold different fund-raising events for La Salle throughout the year. These events entailed extremely hard
work and dedication on the port of the mothers and Brother Fred. Many hours of thought and work were given to the planning of these events. Among the events this year were: the Freshman Mother's Teo, the Christmas Cocktail Party, Poinsettia Sole Week, the Fashion Show, the Auction with the Fathers' Club, and The Grease Bond Concert. With a number of new mothers joining the club this year, there was hope that they would be able to contribute some new ideas, which they did. This year's
new event was A Night with the Grease Band. The donee was held on October 28, and the idea of having music from the 50's and 60's made it a great success. During the 1983-84 school year, the Mothers' Club donated a Iorge sum of money to La Salle as a result of these fundroisers . It is easy to see how such a group con benefit La Salle, both spiritually and economically. Many thanks and a round of applause to Brother Fred and the Mothers' Club.

LASALLE ENTERS THE COMPUTER AGE
In its second year at LaSalle, the "American Computer Science League" has provided competitions for those students excelling in computer programming. Those who are proficient in computer languages (BASIC, PASCAL, etc.) devote considerable time and energy in preparing for the difficult yearround contests. With its moderator, Mr. Russell, LaSalle has enjoyed above average standings in these college level competitions. Although any student can participate, the sometimes abstract tests and the time required to do well, discourage many. While there are only about ten students who participate, it is only the top five scores that are totalled to determine final standings. While the goal of the Computer League is for those interested students to learn more about computer science through exposure with uncommon, often college level competitions, the goal of the Computer Club is similar but much more informal. Consisting mostly of underclassmen, the Club provided an opportunity for students to learn more about computers and computer science. The Computer Club, in its fifth year, consists of several dozen students, who can usually be found hammering on computer keyboards. While there are no formal meetings, the Club provides an opportunity to meet others with similar interests and learn more about the irreversible flow of computer science. These two organizations have a newly furnished computer room in which to work. With eighteen terminals available to interested students, this year promises high finishes in the competitions and an increased interest in the trend of the future - computers.

One of the newest activities at LaSalle is the group of liturgucol singers and musicians known as Seraphim. Starting out in 1982 with only o handful of participants, moderator Steve Krol has worked to expand the group to its current size of eleven students, led by guitarist Joe Block. A few of the activities which Seraphim participated in this year were the Thanksgiving Day liturgy, and the Notional Honor Society Invocation. YEAH!!!
I hod always heard great stories about La Salle mixers, but this year I decided to see for myself what they were like. I thought I would never survive the line, but I eventually entered. All that I could see was people, people, and more people. I was shoved into the flow of people that led into the auditorium. The room was dim, but the atmosphere was vibrant. Everyone was into the music and either dancing, clopping, or just observing the bond. It was impossible to talk in the auditorium, for the music was deafening. My ears ore still ringing. I decided to give my ears and feet a break, so I went into the hall. The hall was mobbed with people trying to get into the auditorium, people trying to get out, people just walking around, and groups of friends just talking about who met whom and where he/ she went, etc. The thing that was most impressive was that everyone enjoyed himself /herself. There was not a dead-head to be found . The most asked question was always "When is the next one?" That just about sums up everybody's attitude toword La Salle's awesome donees. The mixers ore a port of La Salle's community in various ways. The social lives of the students ore given a boost, and there is the money that is raised by each mixer that is put toward various student council projects.

ALWAYS IN TUNE
I hope that was a hom I heard!
Buying your books, meeting friends you haven't seen since lost year, finding your way through your new schedule: these ore the making of a new school year. But these changes do not only face you at on individual basis - they meet you again in all your extra-curricular activities too ... After losing ten important players from its approximately 25-person membership, La Salle's stage bond is starting out this new year with new sounds, people, and equipment. Involved classes and many extra practices ore true signs of the bond's committment to equalling its excellent sound of lost year. And this hard-working attitude is easily seen throughout La Salle's entire music deportment. Directed by Mr. Joseph Ciccimoro (Mr. C), the 1983-84 music deportment consists of approximately 11 0 talented musicians who make up 7 bonds: the stage band, dixieland band, concert band, pep bond, and the second, sixth, and seventh period bands. After working hard at the beginn1ng of this year, it was only a matter of weeks before the department was ready to look forward to performing with its usual excellence at its many engagements scheduled for this year. As has been the custom for several years now, the stage band will be doing Musicians rehearse for concert.

its port in the public relations deportment this year by giving concerts at various elementary schools and also some girls' high schools. In preparation for these concerts, the band has been rehearsing some new songs which ore more pop-chart oriented than ore usually presented. Some of these songs ore: "Only Time Will Tell" by Asia, "Stray Cat Strut" by the Stray Cats, and "Celebration" by Kool and the Gang. Also being rehearsed ore several songs from films or broadway musicals including " Up Where We Belong", the theme from An Officer and a Gentleman, and "Memory" from Broadway's Cats. The bond is confident that more well-known songs like these will better catch the audience's attention and also keep it. Along with these outings, the entire music deportment is looking ahead to the Christmas and Spring concerts the two major annual events. And, of course, the music deportment will ploy a substantial role in this year's Spring Musical, Lil' Abner, and will also enhance the Fall Drama production of Macbeth by playing bock-up and incidental music between the scenes. All in all, it's safe to soy that the music department is well on its way to making this year a very successful and exciting one, and is hoping for everyone's support to fulfill these expectations.

SPRING MUSICAL SUCCESS CONTINUES
After the return of drama to LaSalle w1th lost year's production of Fiorello, the students hove token a much greater interest in musicals and ploys The result of th1s interest is the 1984 musical of LaSalle, Li'l Abner. The story is on adaptation of the original ploy, and centers around the military wishing to turn Dogpatch, which they found to be the most useless town in the country, as a testing site for nuclear weapons. The inhabitants, of course, resist. Leading the effort for another successful musical are Director Pete Doyle, Mr. John Grace, Mr. Joseph Ciccimoro, and production manager Vince Cuce. Among the cast of Li'l Abner ore Matt Herold as Abner, Lynda Riley (Bro . Bill's niece) as Daisy Moe, Jeff Beck as Morry'n Sam, Meg Durin as Mommy Yokum, Mike Bienkowski as Poppy Yokum, and Pete Dougherty as General Bullmoose. Many other students, too many to name here, are also devoting a great deal of time and effort to the musical. Scheduled to run on the 2nd to the 4th and the 9th to 11th of March, Li'l Abner shows great promise for both entertaining all who wish to come, and providing a good deal of revenue for the school.

LaSalle Cheers Club Spirit
J. Griffen, P. Sweeney, L. Gilmore, S. Wolpert
The Spirit Club or Club Spirit, as its members commonly refer to it, has mode its presence felt this year, more so than in years post. Club President Conrod Heckmann defines his club's objectives as getting the students involved in school and sports and having fun through pep rallies and organized activities. Aside from the usual task of pointing signs for football and basketball games, this year's Spirit Club took on active port in the pep rally prior to the annual Thanksgiving Day clash between arch rivals LaSalle and St. Joseph's Prep. The pep rally was the best LaSalle has hod in recent years, no doubt because Club Spirit contributed so much. On that November day, the Spirit Club managed to make the pep rally o lot of fun by using some new and creative ideas which really livened things up and got the crowd involved. First, club member Scott Wolpert picked up the St. Basil cheerleaders, who always manage to get our pep rallies rolling. But this is where the key difference between this year's sensational pep rally and post years medicre pep rallies comes in. The Spirit Club didn't simply go and bring in the cheerleaders for o few cheers. They were innovative and went o few daring extra steps to really make the pep rally o winner.

Winter Dance Warms Hearts
Love is found on the donee floor.
Prompted by popular demand, the Student Council sponsored the previously unscheduled Winter Donee on January 21. Ticket soles were the best in recent years and climbed near the 200 couple mark, enabling Student Council to make an unexpected profit from the event. Music for the evening was supplied by Sound Entertainment disc jockies, as voted by the student body during homeroom balloting. Refreshments included potato chips, pretzels, and soda. For the most part, the evening was a complete success. Nearly everyone, including Brother Fronk and other faculty members, enjoyed the music, dancing, and good company. The Student Council is to be praised for its ability to put the Winter Donee together. The decision to hold the dance exemplified council's responsiveness to the student body, and the short amount of time provided to prepare the donee compliments the council's hard work.

ANOTHER BANNER YEAR
The La Salle Forum has continued its excellence in speech and debate, participating in many tournaments at the local, state and notional level. The team has brought home many trophies, including a win ot Colvert Hall, second place finishes ot the Pennsbury Invitational and Scranton Central, and o fourth place ot Pittsburgh Central Catholic. Individually, members of the team hove done even better, which is remark- (Bock Row) C Bond, C. Hoffman, S McElligott, T Sowirko (Front Row)P. Bonfanti, D. Link. T ok1ng up the slack was Matthew "Zeus" Bradley, the President, who through his overwhelming humility and amazing dedication has earned the respect and friendsh1p of everyone on the team. Along with Fronk Gavin, the Spiritual leader of the team, they hove managed to dominate the Interpretation events. In Original Oratory, Mark Oberholzer and Mike "the Koala" Woodring hove done very well, with "Animal" winning St. Joseph's, Pittsburgh, Pennsbury and La Solie, and Mike taking what was left. Jeff "Florida" Clarke and Terry "Hammer" Campbell were the bose of a growing Extemp. squad. Though they hove not done well, they hove gained experience, J.V. and Vors1ty Debate, from left. M . Credit for their success belongs to the help of Brother Kev1n Delmasse, whose comeback was long anticipated Randy O'Neill, congressman par excellence, was the key to several tournaments, Bryce Holten, whose cumbersome head rests squarely on his shoulders, and the "Ace" Ferroce, form the nucleus for the future. Bro Q entrances all with his eloquent speech
This post fall, LaSalle students and their fathers gathered together to celebrate the 34th annual Father-Son Banquet. On November 17, LaSalle fathers and sons attended the festivities at Williamson's Restaurant in Horsham. This popular event, sponsored by the Men of LaSalle, recognized the sacred union between father and son. It also gave them the opportunity to spend some time together. In the words of Bro. William Quaintance, Moderator of the Men of LaSalle, the banquet "is o time where we can set aside the broads and have some serious fun." All in all, this year's Father-Son celebration was the most successful. Over 700 people attended, and they were rewarded with various prizes given away. Another added treat for both father and son alike was the guest speaker. For the banquet, the Men of LaSalle acquired the services of Harold Katz, owner of the Philodelphia 76ers and Nutri/System Inc. For over a half hour, Katz spoke about his rise in the business world and his local background. With his philadelphia accent, Katz spoke eloquently, giving advice to all in attendance, especially LaSalle students. In short, the evening was a success. Brother Bill and the Father's Club planned a perfect evening once again.
Mighty Mathletes Meet Challenges
"2 + 2 - 4"
"Mr. Bradley d1dn't show us to answer th1s one"
Whot o lonely sport
The LaSalle Mothletes are looking extremely strong once again. Another great turnout will enable first year coach Mr. Bradley to continue the almost taken-for-granted success of the Moth Team. Mr. Bradley will look for senior standout Carl Woldspurger to lead LaSalle through a rigorous schedule including four weekly leagues, Saturday meets at local high schools, and st ops at various local colleges such as Lehigh and T empi e. Joining Carl as the top hopefuls are juniors Dave and Ted Ost. LaSalle can look forward to a promising future with tremendous young prospects such as super soph S. Patal and amazing frosh Peter Bonfanti (already in Calculus.) As the winning tradition continues, more students are sh owing up for the meets. To be a competitive Mothlet e, one must be able to use a combination of basic mathematical skills and common sense to solve problems. Since questions are taken from all areas of mathematics, the most well-rounded student will usually fare best. Being a mathlete can be one of the most self-satisfying "sports" at LaSalle. Not only must you compete as a team, but also as on individual. Each person's total points ore kept and, at the end of the year, the Mothlete-of-the-Year is named. Beside this, there ore many other team and individual awards distributed, including o certificat e of participation for all members. If these incentives aren't enough to physche you up, then consider each meet a challenge: You vs. the problem.

1984 Blue and Gold Sparkles Let us define the Blue and Gold. It ts sending naive students tnto a world of many climates. The staff is on a mighty quest of creating o yearbook which the administration tolerates and the stu· dents accept. (If they don't, we ore tn big trouble.) In this evil world we find many mishaps ready to send the staff down into a bottomless pit of work. The greedy gremlins steal typing assign· ments and photos; the evil excuses of "Don't worry, I'll hove it tomorrow," and "I forgot tt" bombard the courageous staff. The bold bond must sprint to every deadline or be penalized by the om· nipresent Herff Jones Yearbook Corpo· ration. The sometimes ally, sometimes foe Dovor Photo Company supplies the badly needed pnnts. The guide to this merry little bond is the big "G" Mr. William Geiger. Thts merciless task-master drives the group on, but his fatherly concern tS always known. The staff is lead by Captain Ron· dy "Overseer" O'Neill. Throughout all of the hardships, the staff finally sees the end of their quest: a finished Blue and Gold. TO ROMP OVER PREP
The 1983 football season actually .torted in December of 1982, shortly Jfter the final game of the 1982 season. Ne started off-season conditioning with veight lifting and running before school, hree days a week. A great deal of stu:lents committed themselves to this raining, which we hoped, was in indicaion of a good 1983 season. The first .ign of how good the season would be vas the posting of a 16-0 shutout of Nest Catholic in the perrenniol competi· ion of the "Brother's Boys". The following week, however, we were .oundly defeated by a strong Cardinal )ougherty team in a way we would roth!r hove forgotten. We bounced bock, hough, beating the Crusaders of Father Judge in the closing minutes of fol::>wing game. In our first game under the ghts, we met Bishop Egan and a strong >ffens1ve threat. Going into half-time o~e were down by fourteen points. The econd half, though, seemed like a dif· erent game, as we rallied for a cometack, but in the end lost 17-14 on a lost econd field goal. The next game how!Ver, we upset Archbishop Ryan 7-6, o~ho hod defeated the McDevitt Lanc!rS the previous week, giving them their irst loss. A series of losses followed, as we were •eaten by North Catholic and Bishop :enrick. This put a damper on the sea· on, and the prospect for a winning seaon looked doubtful. We didn't give up, hough, and decided that our lost three 10mes would be o new season, in which 1e would strive for victory. A defeat of \rchbishop Wood and on incredible up· et of o strong Bishop McDevitt team ~ft us with one final game, which would e the difference between a winning eoson or breaking even. Thanksgiving loy, we soundly defeated St. Joe's and osted our first winning record since

Harriers Run Wild
Perhaps the best phrase to describe our 1983 cross-country team was "big shoes to fill." Led by co-captains Dove Casale and Tom Shallow, we were to defend our 1982 Catholic League Chomp1onship, but more importantly, to uphold the reputation of perhaps the best cross-country team in the history of LaSalle. We began to bring these goals about through tough practices which began in August. These practices entailed everything from twelve mile runs to grueling hill workout in front of the school. As time progressed we could see the vast improvements in our bodies. The runs become easier, but just when our bodies began to feel better, Coach Devine would g1ve us more 1ntense workouts. By the beginning of September we felt ready to uphold the great tradition of LaSalle runners. In our first major meet, The LaSalle College Invitational, we finished a disappointing fifth place, but the season was still young. At a league meet the next Wednesday, however, we suffered a devastating loss in the hip injury of junior Kurt Vonderschmolz. Without him we still managed to toke second place in the two following invitotionols, Conrad Weiser and Solesionum. After a sixth place finish in the pretigious Manhattan Invitational we were set to defend our Catholic League Championship. Unfortunately, a further setback occured when senior Bill Hoban suffered a severe ankle inJUry the day after the lost league meet.

Spirits were high the day of the Champs, but with the two injured runners we could only manage a fourth place finish in the Varsity race. The JV and freshmen teams, ironically, also finished fourth . Although our goals had not been reached, there were many individual accomplishments that cannot be overlooked. First of all, senior co-captain Dove Casale continued his dominance in the league, with his third selection as All Catholic and an eleventh place finish in the Champs. Tom Shallow, the other co-captain, became All Catholic with his gutsy seventh place finish in the Champs. Perhaps the greatest achievement, however, was provided by sophomore Seamus McEIIigot. He dropped o phenomenal two minutes from his time of the year before, and, as a result was also named All Catholic. Because of his consistent running throughout the year, he was named Most Valuable Runner. Other Varsity runners included seniors Jim Lynn and Paul McCabe, Juniors Randy Brown and Eric DiCianno, and >ophomore John Livingood . Another pleasant surprise was provided by outstanding freshman Chris Van Zandt, with his stellar first place finish in the Freshmen Chomps, and impressive performances in Varsity meets throughout the season . Other good performances were provided by JV runners Bernie Soxon, Sean O'Holloron, Tom Copor, and Guy Lemboch. With five returning varsity runners, and the JV runners mentioned above, Coach Pot Devine con only look to the future with hope.

Soccer Kicks Up Winning Season This year marked the first winning season of the LaSalle soccer team, establishing the Explorers as one of the best teams in the Catholic League North. With this behind them, the 198384 squad set out to uphold its newly gained reputation . Led by head coach Tom Turner, his assistant Seamus McWilliams, and team captains Frank D'Angelo and Will Malatesta, the team got off to a fantastic start. LaSalle lost only two of thirteen pre-season games, as well as taking first place in the Kutztown tournament and second place in the Christian Brothers' tournament, which was held in Washington, D.C.

The promising pre-season was, how· ver, followed by a mediocre showing in 1e regular season. The loss of the pre· eoson momentum can be attributed to oth the injury of assistant captain Mo· ltesto (replaced by senior Dove Cros· on for much of the season) and the ::>ugh competition of the Northern Diviion, as well as to the graduation of 1ony of lost year's finest players. Depite these problems, though, the team till managed to come up with a league ecord of 6·9·1 , and on overall record of 1-1 0-1 . This is on admirable finish when he difficulties faced by the club ore onsidered. With o great amount of young talent 1t LaSalle (including sophomores Drew .tockmol and Todd Hellman), Coach ·urner looks forward to o great 1984-85 eason, hoping to follow the precedent .reoted by this year's team.

The 1983-84 La Salle Basketball te01 began its work in early October. Fro1 tryouts to practice to games, on orom of hard work pierced the air in tr team's presence. The wee following, the Explorers pocked up on trekked to yet unconquered territory i southern Virginia, and the Benedictir Capitol City Classic. This year's indoor track team, in the trod1t1on of LaSalle runners, has vast potential for a great season. The team is led by seniors Dove Casale, Bill Hoban, Tom Shallow and Bill Schull, along with juniors Eric DiCionno and Randy Brown, and sophomore Seamus McElligott. The majority of these runners ore All-Catholic, giving coach Pot Devine one of the strongest teams in the league. The team's best events this season ore the 1,000 yard run, dominated by Casale, and the distance medley and two mile relays, in which various combinations of runners participated. Nearly every one of these comb1nations was unbeatable in the d1stonce-medley relay. The indoor track team took port in many races this season, 1ncluding the Meet of Champions at Leh1gh Umversity. The season closed in March w1th the State Indoor Championsh1ps, followed by t he Eastern States Champtonship, and lastly the Catholic League Chomps. Judging from the present strength of the team, a very good showing in the Catholic League Chomps looks inevitable. Everyone hopes that the Catholic League title will be returned to LaSalle.

GLIDES TO EASY VICTORIES
Skates tightly laced, helmet inploce, I slowly unwind a roll of b lock tope around the blade of my hockey stick and think bock to the beginning of the season, when the only goal of LaSalle's hockey team was to simply put a team on the ice. Now as I sit here remembering those early days !think about our first practice. Sitting here in this some locker room, I was surrounded by a bunch of strangers whose faces I hod never seen before. Apart from the seven or eight returning vetron players, I didn't know a soul in the room. But now as the season is slowly winding down to its conclusion, I look around the locker room and recognize those same faces, once so strange to me, as the faces of my teammates. During the course of this long season, we hove finally become a team. Early in the season, the f uture of LaSalle Hockey was very much in doubt. Seven seniors had been lost through graduation, and our only goalie hod been lost to injury. Facing a season with young, inexperienced players was one thing, but hockey without a regular goalie was unthinkable. Finally, though, a new goalie surfaced. Sophomore Harry Portkand, normally a winger, became our number one goalie. In this first regular, he allowed only three goals as we defeated Upper Dublin seven to three. In that game everything seemed to fall into place. We had a goalie, leadership was provided by seniors Terry Charlton, Fronk Rankin, John Halfpenny and Frank Sposato, and our young players played like veterans. That first game was our crucial test, which we passed easily. Now if only they had all been that easy. We lost three straight after that one, but still, we now knew what we could do. All of the unanswered questions of thepreseason had finally been answered, and we could get down to playing hockey.

La Salle ''Keglers'' Spare No One
Whoddyo' mean I don' t get a varsity letter
The 1983-84 season ot the LaSalle bowling team has been one of accomplishment, despite the loss of two-thirds of lost year's varsity team to graduation. Led by captain Paul Grous, seniors Steve Govorone and Chris Schwartz, as well as juniors Tim Helmick and Don Cleary, the keglers (what's a kegler?) turned 1n a good showing in the Catholic League northern division. Much of the credit for this season goes to coach Tom Power, who holds the responsibility of work1ng with each of the bowlers to better that student's game. The results of his time spent with the bowlers ore ev1dent 1n the outstanding accomplishments of several Individuals, including Grous and Helmick. Look1ng to next year, Coach Power sees the future of LaSalle bowling as promising. The strong JV team of this year will serve to augment the returning members of the vars1ty squad to form a strong nucleus for the 1984-85 season. Though the recent competition in the Catholic League has been tough, the dedication of the LaSalle bowlers should help to bnng them to the top.

This year's swim team defends its Catholic League championship, re路 claimed last season, and is once again favored to take the title. Although the team lost several all-Catholic seniors from a squad who set a record for points scored at championships last season, the team's depth is expected to pick up the slack. Led by fourth year coach Tony Amand and co-captains Steve Hladczuk and John Hogan, La Salle stands ready to meet a challenging season. In addition to the co-captains, the swim team has a number of swimmers who could be serious contenders for allCatholic honors. These swimmers include senior Jim Tobin and Matt Best, juniors Kevin Garrity, Dave O'Brien, Chas O'Brien, and Glenn Walters, and freshman Drew Reichner. The key dates on the swimming schedule this year are Feb. 8 against archrival Cardinal O'Hara and the league champs at St. Joe's University on March 3rd. If La Salle's depth remains strong, the swimmers should be able to make good on the promise, "We shall repeat."

Several team members were top-five record holders during the season. Credit for this winning season goes not only to the wrestlers themselves, but also to head coach Dove Siegel, who is responsible for getting the grapplers into shape each season. Though many key wrestlers will be lost to graduation this year, the 1984-85 season should be JUSt as successful, as a strong group of underclassmen round out the team Another goal of next season's team 1s to increase the attendance to 1ts matches, as recently the crowd has consisted mostly of friends and family of the wrestlers. Th1s goal should be easily otto1ned, with the reputation of the LaSalle wrestling team growing qu1ckly.

LASALLE TENNIS TEAM
Joe shows his new swing.
La Salle's tennis team began lost year with two basic goals; to win the Catholic League title and to replace the 66 match winning streak broken the year before. When the smoke cleared, La Salle hod won its sixth title in seven years and hod achieved its fifth undefeated season in six years. This year the goals are pretty much the some, to repeat as champions and to continue the current 14 match winning streak. And despite losing both his top singles and his top doubles players (All-Catholics Jim Simone and Pot Smith), second year coach Brother William Riley is confident of achieving both goals. The reasons for this confidence ore depth and balance. The Explorers ore simply loaded with tolent. If trouble should arise, Coach Riley con depend on the experience of seniors Joe Cilio, John Leahy, and Kevin Rudden, the expertise of juniors Andrew Ragusa and Glenn Stockmol ( 12-0, All-Catholic doubles lost year), or the consistency of sophomores Dove Martello ( 13-1) and Drew Stockmol (14-0, All-Catholic as a freshman). With o little luck and a lot of hard work this year's team should attain the level reached by La Salle's tennis dynasty of the late 70's.

The 1984 La Salle Spring T rock team has three primary goals for this season: To surpass the outstanding results of lost year's team in the Distance Medley and Two-Mile relays, to win the Penn Re lays Championship of America in those two relays and to develop a stronger all-around team. Leading the way for these goals will be on excellent group of senior runners. All-Catholic Co-Captains David Casale and Tom Shallow return from the 1983 Distance Medley relay which was the fourth best in the nation. All-Catholic Bill Hoban and sprinter Bill Schull complete this years team. Larry Helmick and Mike Harvan will compete in the hurdles, while Tony Broca and Bill Schull will handle the sprints. Jim Waters will add depth to the distance team . Brian Driscoll, Rick Calhoun and Larry Helmick will make up the majority of the field events team. A promising season awaits the 1984 LaSalle Golf T eom. Led by captain Rob Savarese and seniors Tom Shallow, Bill McKernan, Kevin Christine, Ted Murphy and Brion Driscoll, along with juniors Andy Bonner and Eric Dicionno, the team shows great potential in the form of a vast wealth of talent. Brother AI, in his duties as head coach, prepares the golfers for the coming season through early spring practices and many hours of work with theindividuol players. The main ambition of the team is to continue their tradition of winning the Catholic League Championships. For the post five years, LaSalle has emerged victorious from the Chomps. Upholding this reputation is the first priority of the golfers. An increase in the number of matches comprising the season should present no problem at all for the team, despite the fact that the majority of these matches ore away, while only a few ore to be held at Whitemarsh Country Club, the team's home course. Hopefully o sixth Championship will come into the hands of the LaSalle golfers, and they will continue to make on admirable showing for our school.

1\ letter from ~rotQer 1\nllrew .Quality, a Ireasure of excellence, helps define the Class of 1984. Challenged on entrance to La Salle to "explore excellence," you began that exploration with a spirit of creative striving that kept you headed toward worthwhile goals. In four years, you have rroved together through the difficult passage fran adolescence to maturity. Helped by friends along the way, you experienced rrotion in the fonn of change and growth, and arotion as you shared victories and defeats and their consequent joys or frustrations. You accepted yourselves, then reached out in confidence to others. United in the challenging process of being human, you began to respond to La Salle's persistent call to pursue a life of trust, friendship, faith and justice. In becaning involved in the rich and intricate interweaving of self with others, you accepted the invitation to live, to make good things happen. The goodness you brought to your school revealed itself in signs of your presence: joy, courage, loyalty and respect - gifts derived not so much from culture or education but from the questing
-
human heart.
Enthusiasm is essential in the quest for excellence, and you possess it in abundance . Your class has a gratifyingly large percentage of individuals who measured their four years here by exceptional degrees of involvement with those who shared sentiment, space, and self with them. Literally, enthusiasm means "in God" or "full of God" and in offering that gift, you r61\inded all of us that the encounter with God cares through a gradual deepening of our relationships with those who seek Him with us. Success, for a school, is measured in tenns of individual student progress in the direction of excellence. As your principal , I appreciate the accanplishIOOnts of many ne:nbers of this class and acknc:Mledge that through friendly canpetition you have challenged one another to develop potential and becane better persons. Your class history of achievanent will glow with deserved lustre and pennanence so that future generations of Explorers might follow the pathways you marked by leaving behind you improved activities, stronger spirit, and essentially better and happier persons who will rananber you. Tarorrow's world beckons, perhaps threateningly . But everything you have experienced here should have taught you sanething about hope and dreams. Dreams are closely linked to man ' s ambitions and fears . Great ~n have had dreams of social justice, peace, and Christianity really lived. Your dreams, your ideals, your quests are worth cherishing--but they are also worth doing sanething about. We hope that you keep striving to attain them, because faith tells us that you will be responding to a call from God - to make his presence in the world real. It is, in fact, a call to help recreate your world, to pull it together in Christ, as you have this school, that grateful!y wishes you continued success on the journey. ISO
