150 years ago the Christian Brothers established the Chris~ rian Brothers Academy at 2nd and Jefferson streets in Philadelphia. Since that time, the school has grown and transformed into one of the premier institutions in the Delaware Valley. Despite reloC2tion .and the gradual expansion of La Salle, the Brothers have maintained the same dedication to the development and success of each young man that is en路 trusted to the school. By instilling the values of their founder St. John Baptist de La Salle and helping young men plan and achieve their goals, the Brothers have consistently provided the srudencs of La Salle College High School with a strong community environment for learning and growing. The Brothers have created a personal style of education that enhances the student-teacher relationship within La Salle College High School. As a result of this style of teaching. La Salle has moved beyond a school and become a second home for its students. The sense of community fostered by the Brothers' ministry separates La SaUe from its counterparts and fosters the crcation of strong bonds between the students and faculty of La Salle, as intcnded by Saint John the Baptist
de La Salle.
La Sallc College High School continues in the u,.dition of f. John Baptist de La &Il1c.
The Brothers' involvement in student activities is another sign of rheir dedication to creating a strong community atmosphere at La Salle. It is actually difficult to attend a La Salle function - whether it is a dance, a sporting event, or the spring musical- and not see sevcral Brothers in attendance. This dedication has spread to me entire La Salle faculty and resulted in unparalleled commitment to the education of not just the mind, but the entire young man. Over the years the Brothers have stayed true co the mission of St. John the Baptist de La Salle as they tirelessly worked to make La Salle the amazing institution it has become today. Through the Brothcrs and their inspiration of the lay faculty, La Salle continues to generate men of intellect and accomplishment, service and justice, compassion and faith, and integrity and respect. - Brendan Cummings '09

La Salle is truly more chan sum of its parts. La Salle is more man juse a regular high school with eight periods a day, teachers, homework. and exams. We enter La Salle not only to learn science and math, play lacrosse, or play an instrument, but we also learn the values of hard work, dedication, saength, service, and friendship. La Salle gentlemen take what they learn here at La Salle and continue in St. John the Baptist de La Salle's footsteps to serve others. We are devoted and loyal to rhe role we have to play in continuing the LasaUian tradition ofbrorherhood and respect. , Paul Nucero '09

BEGiNNiNG TRADiTiON On rhe first day at La Salle, a freshman mind races and a freshman heart pounds. Looking up and down the hallways filled with upperclassman creates a bit of anxiety. Anticipation. excitement, and fear overwhelm all of the new students at La Salle. but helpful tcachers are there to suppOrt and guide them through the first day. Finding homerooms, lockers, and classrooms are some of the difficulties faced throughout the day, but, once
conquered, a feeling of relief and a set of new challenges await the freshman class.
The first day is just the beginning. It is the only day these feelings arc experienced. As days, weeks. and months pass La Salle rakes on a differenr look. The :tnxiery and fear is replaced with a feeling of comfort. It is difficult to get through day one, but the rewards :lre well worth it. • DilJan Pierce'12

From rhe election of Abraham Lincoln, ro the inauguration of rhe United States first African American president, La Salle College High School has been a prominenr name in the Philadelphia region. Now, celebrating our 150th anniversary as an educational facility, academical~ ly, athletically, and religiollsly, our studenr body is proud to contribute to an insritution that has led so many men to success. The fact that La Salle has thrived for over 150 years is an accomplishment all UntO itself, yet even more amazing is the established alumni network. The alumni presence is strong, and its srrength displays the passion that these men have for their schooL Ir is:l true joy to wake up every morning and be able to attend a school where your education is taken JUSt as seriously as yOUt personal views and beliefs. The sophomore experience 2r L2 Salle is essen· rial for matuting on OUt L.asallian journeys. We 2re faced with both new opportunities .and new challenges during our sophomore ye.ar at La Salle. New responsibiliries are given to us, in both academic .1Od extracurricular activities. At the S2me time. sophomore year represents a chance to maintain good habits that we developed in fresh· man yeM. and to abandon any bad habits that will not help us in our Lasallian journeys. Our experiences from l:tst year taught us the need we all h:tve
for support from our families. our teachers, and. most import:tnrly, e:tch other. Although we :tre still underclassmen, we feel a cerra.in confidence that many of us did not have l:tst year. As sopho~ nloreS3t La Salle, we learn to take advice from fac· ulty and upperdusmen. give advice to the fresh· men, and help the school community ~ a whole. -Kevin Gillespie '11

When students enter and leave La Salle they see two signs that read, ~Enter co Learn" on the way in and, "Leave to Serve~ on the way out. LA SALLE ACADEMY TUTORING
LIVING THE FOUNDER'S CALL
w
hcncvcr you hear a speech about LA Salle. inevitably the phrase "Leave to Serve" will
be mentioned at some point. One way in which the students at La Salle respond to this call to serve rhe surrounding community is through going to La Salle Academy every T llesday. La Salle Academy Tutoring is a service activity that benefits the srudems at L:t Salle Academy. The kids there go ro school from rhe end of August uncil rhe beginning ofJune. and arc at school from 8 am uncil 5 pm.
On every bus ride down to La Salle Academy, Mr. Cipolla asks if there are any new guys who have never been there before, and inevitably [here are a couple newcomers, One thing [hat he always says to the new tutors is, "Many of these kids come from homes in which [here may not be a good role model for them to look up roo Today, you're that role model. You're doing God's work today." That is truly what turoring at La SaUe Academy is: God's work. -Zachary Good '09

MOTHERS AND FATHERS CLUBS
LOVE AND SUPPORT
A
Imosr anytime there is an event held on the La Salle campus, one can be sure that the Mothers' or Fathers' Clubs arc presenr and responsible for the event. Parents volunteer to give up their rime in order to give back to their sons' school. The dubs meet at least once a month to dis-
cuss anything from the Mother-Son Communion Brunch, to the Fashion Show, to Super Sunday. From this large group an executive board is formed to make decisions. Then, volunteers are split into sub-commjrrces for each event
so that each parent has some valuable
role in a Lasallian event. These sub-committees then work tirelessly to prepare and organize the various incredible events that La Salle has to offer both its srudents and their parenrs. So, although many of rhe students are embarrassed by theit mothets and fathers, withour theit tireless hours of volunteer work, La Salle would not be the same incredible school, with the same evenrs and functions that we have come to know and love. • Scan Gillespie '09

changes for the berrcr. At rhe outset of the summer vacation, a school~widc technology upgrade began. Beginning in tbe early summer, Mr. Petcr Sigmund and select Lab Managers successfully installed a state-of-the-art phone system, adding a handset ro every room. The idea for the new phone system was broached by four Lab Managers, and with the help of Mr. Sigmund and the Administration, La Salle is on the Cutring edge when it comes to telephone
systems.
La Salle continues to be one of the most technologically advanced high schools in the nation. La Salle was the first high school in the state to successfully deploy Windows XP- and Visra-, and soon, it will become the firsr ro deploy the newest Microsoft operating system, Windows 7-, Thanks to Mr. Sigmund, the Lab Managers, and the Administration, La Salle's technological future looks bright. - Justin O'Hara '09
