La Salle is truly more than the sum of its parts. La Salle more than just a regular high school with eight periods a d; teachers, homework, and exams. As a student at La Salle C< lege High School, one truly learns life lessons and matur into a well~rounded, gifted, and unique individual. Wheth involved in challenging academic programs, rigorous SpOI programs, creative arts, or service, the Lasallian tradition ttl transforms a young teenager into a mature well~rounded st dent, a "1oya1son."

We enter La Salle not only to learn science and math, play acrosse, or play an instrument, but we also learn the values of lard work, dedication, strength, service, and friendship. La Salle ~endemen take what they learn here at La Salle and continue in 't. John the Baptist de La Salle's footsteps to serve others. We lre devoted and loyal to the role we have to play in continuing he Lasallian tradition of brotherhood and respect. - Paul Nucero '09

Hail La Salle we praise thee! These words which begin ou alma mater seem to be so much more than just words to thl La Salle student body. Each day, over one thousand youn) men enter through La Salle's doors in order to gain a wealth 0 knowledge they did not possess the day before. But La Salll means so much more to its students than simply a place to gar ner a first class education. Instead, the value of La Salle can h

,etter recognized and appreciated through the activities of~ ered outside of the classroom. From clubs such as Spanish =lub to Celtic Club, or even Engineering Club, there is an ac~ demic club for anyone. La Salle also offers a wide variety of ervice opportunities and athletics of all kinds, ranging from ntramural wiffieball to varsity football, so anyone can get in~ 'olved athletically. But perhaps the most clear~cut symbol of

the passion and joy found by La Salle students is evidenced at large gatherings such as mass or sporting events. Whether singing alongside their classmates at mass, or cheering at the top of their lungs for sports team, it is in these moments that one can see just what it means to attend La Salle; and just how special it is to be an Explorer. ~Sean Gillespie '09

Below: Cormac Hoffman and mom on his first day

On the first day at La Salle, a freshman mind races and a freshman heart pounds. Looking up and down the hallways filled with upperclassman creates a bit of anxiety. Anticipation, excitement, and fear overwhelm all of the new students at La Salle, but helpful teachers are there to support and guide them through the first day. Finding homerooms, lockers, and classrooms are some of the difficulties faced throughout the day, but, once conquered, a feeling of relief and a set of new challenges await the freshman class. The first day is just the beginning. It is the only day these feelings are experienced. As days, weeks, and months pass La Salle takes on a different look. The anxiety and fear is replaced with a feeling of comfort. It is difficult to get through day one, but the rewards are well worth it. - Dillon Pierce'12

Left/Below: Cardinal Rigali and Fr. Janton celebrate Liturgy

From the election of Abraham Lincoln, to the inauguration of the United States first African American president, La Salle College High School has been a prominent name in the Philadelphia region. Now, celebrating our 150th anniversary as an educational facility, academically, athletically, and religiously, our student body is proud to contribute to an institution that has led so many men to success. The fact that La Salle has thrived for over 150 years is an accomplishment all unto itself, yet even more amazing is the established alumni network. The alumni presence is strong, and its strength displays the passion that these men have for their school. It is a true joy to wake up every morning and be able to attend a school where your education is taken just as seriously as your personal views and beliefs. La Salle has gained the reputation that it has because of the Christian Brother's focus on educating the whole person. In essence, for the last 150 years La Salle has provided educationally, and morally sound men to a world in which education and morality are not always so sound. - Greg Morozzi '09 Far Left: La Salle's band welcomes the attendees Left: Mr. Colistra leads the procession

Freshman year is a chance for a new start, a chance to set goals for the next four years of our lives. La Salle strongly encourages each student to work for their goals over these four crucial years, while providing support for anyone who wishes to seek guidance. There are many new opportunities to expand our education as well as develop into respectable young men at La Salle. The faculty is an outstanding feature that a freshman quickly recognizes. Faculty at La Salle is always there to help and, along with the upper-

classmen, they truly exemplify the theory brotherhood and respect. Everyone understa n 1 that coming into La Salle is a big change, and faculty and upperclassmen are willing to guide through this change. La Salle is a great ment that helps each freshman become a youngman. Freshman year is the beginning of an dinary four year journey at La Salle College School. - Dillon Smith

The sophomore experience at La Salle is essential for maturing on our Lasallian journeys. We are faced with both new opportunities and new challenges during our sophomore year at La Salle. New responsibilities are given to us, in both academic and extracurricular activities. At the same time, sophomore year represents a chance to maintain good habits that we developed in freshman year, and to abandon any bad habits that will not help us in our Lasallian journeys. Our experiences from last year taught us the need we all have

for support from our families, our teachers, most importantly, each other. Although we still underclassmen, we feel a certain confider~ that many of us did not have last year. As mores at La Salle, we learn to take advice from ulty and upperclassmen, give advice to the men, and help the school community as a -Kevin Gillespie

The defining characteristic of junior year at any high school is the transition from underclassmen to upperclassmen. Throughout the year, students begin to accept the title of'upperclassman" and all of the responsibilities that come with it. For the first time, the members of the class are given more responsibility in La Salle's various activities and clubs. As juniors take over leadership roles in academics, athletics, and service, they become more prominent members of the school community and, as such, are able to better enrich

the school with their own ideas. In addition to becoming upperclassmen, j year is also marked by a strengthening of By junior year, students have had more than years to get to know each other and, as such, friendships continue to grow and new friendslllp., continue to be made. In this way, junior year at La Salle is really a turning point and a stronger continuation previous years. - Sean Janda '

BROTHERHOOD AND RESPECT

I

n conjunction with the administration, the Student Council searched for a unifying, inclusive theme for the 2008-2009 school year. Accordingly, both parties agreed upon "Brotherhood and Respect;' a theme that embodies the ideals of a true Lasallian education. With this in mind, the Student Council entered the school year with two main goals: to bring the student body together, and to bring a renewed sense of enthusiasm to the La Salle College High School campus. The 2008-2009 school year was marked

.bove: "No wing sauce on the Bird ,rsey, ok?"

by excellence in every possible arena. The students enjoyed the new academic wing, tremendous athletic success supported all the way with the ever-loyal support of its fans and parents, and a revamped cafeteria, dubbed the "Explorer Cafe:' The mixture of exciting pep-rallies, crowded mixers, an elegant formal, and a record-breaking Wing Bowl excited the La Salle Community. Perhaps the most encouraging aspect of this past school year is the support everyone showed for one another. - Mike Cassidy '09

he National Honor Society is an organization comprised of juniors and seniors who encompass the principles of scholarship, leadership, character, and service; the characteristics upon which the Society is founded. This year's moderators, Brother William DiPasquale and Mrs. Frances Jacob Diccicco, along with the numerous student members have participated, served, and aided in the La Salle community in countless ways. The major focus of the National Honor Society is the peer tutoring pro-

gram. In the program, members of the Society assist other students with any academic needs they may have. The tutors meet with the students individually and offer assistance throughout the school year. Beyond tutoring, the National Honor Society's members also serve as tour guides, greeters, and ushers for many of the school-wide functions throughout the year. the student body in service to their community. - Neil Hubbert '09

rom freshman branch out day to graduation, every La Salle student gets involved in service. When students enter and leave La Salle they see two signs that read, "Enter to Learn" on the way in and, "Leave to Serve" on the way out. Over four years at La Salle, these words become an integral part of what it means to be Lasallian. Service allows students the chance to use their talents and abilities to give to people who are less fortunate. As the largest and most involved club at La Salle, students reach out to the commu-

LA SALLE ACADEr~1Y TUTORING

LIVING THE FOUNDER'S CALL

\y

henever you hear a speech about La Salle, inevitably the phrase"Leave to Serve" will be mentioned at some point. One way in which the students at La Salle respond to this call to serve the surrounding community is through going to La Salle Academy every Tuesday. La Salle Academy Tutoring is a service activity that benefits the students at La Salle Academy. The kids there go to school from the end of August until the beginning ofJune, and are at school from 8 am until 5 pm.

On every bus ride down to La Salle Academy, Mr. Cipolla asks if there are any new guys who have never been there before, and inevitably there are a couple newcomers. One thing that he always says to the new tutors is, "Many of these kids come from homes in which there may not be a good role model for them to look up to. Today, you're that role modeL You're doing God's work today:' That is ttuly what tutoring at La Salle Academy is: God's work. -Zachary Good '09

MOTHERS AND FATHERS CLUBS

LOVE AND SUPPORT A lmost anytime there is an event held on the La Salle campus, one can be sure that the Mothers' or Fathers' Clubs are present and responsible for the event. Parents volunteer to give up their time in order to give back to their sons' school. The clubs meet at least once a month to discuss anything from the Mother-Son Communion Brunch, to the Fashion Show, to Super Sunday. From this large group an executive board is formed to make decisions. Then, volunteers are split into sub-committees for each event

so that each parent has some valuable role in a Lasallian event. These sub-committees then work tirelessly to prepare and organize the various incredible events that La Salle has to offer both its students and their parents. So, although many of the students are embarrassed by their mothers and fathers, without their tireless hours of volunteer work, La Salle would not be the same incredible school, with the same events and functions that we have come to know and love. - Sean Gillespie '09

rom year to year, technology at La Salle changes for the better. At the outset of the summer vacation, a school-wide technology upgrade began. Beginning in the early summer, Mr. Peter Sigmund and select Lab Managers successfully installed a state-of-the-art phone system, adding a handset to every room. The idea for the new phone system was broached by four Lab Managers, and with the help of Mr. Sigmund and the Administration, La Salle is on the cutting edge when it comes to telephone

systems. La Salle continues to be one of the most technologically advanced high schools in the nation. La Salle was the first high school in the state to successfully deploy Windows Xp®and Vista®, and soon, it will become the first to deploy the newest Microsoft operating system, Windows 7®. GRANDPARENTS DAY

SHARING OUR TIME AND LOVE

F

or students at La Salle our school is one of the most integral parts of all of our lives. La Salle is the place where we spend the majority of our weekdays. As soon as 7th and 8th grade, most of us have already had the opportunity through open houses, practice tests, and sporting events - to visit La Salle's campus and be exposed to the place that is to become our home away from home for the next four years. However, one group of the La Salle community that may not get this opportunity is our grandparents.

LaSdcCIIlctclitllSc-.!

It is for this reason that this fall our freshmen continued La Salle's tradition of Grandparents' Day. On this day, the school invited each freshman grandparent to receive a tour of the school and to spend time with their grandchild in the halls of La Salle. Grandparents' Day is a wonderful tradition that contributes to the growth of the La Salle community, and will hopefully be continued for years to come. - Nick Rizzuto '09

KAIROS

THE LORD'S TIME

I

f only one term could be chosen to describe a student's time at La Salle, it would have to be brotherhood. In fact, the theme for our 2008-2009 school year was brotherhood and respect. The student body, led by the senior class, strived to succeed in both of these aspects of life. The primary example of brotherhood within La Salle this year can be seen in the bonds created throughout the class of 2009. A major factor in this growing bond and sense of brotherhood is Kairos.

At Kairos there is opportunity for one to have quiet personal time and time to bond with others

Even with having gone on Kairos as both a retreat ant and leader, it is still difficult to put into words what it means to be a part of such a magnificent experience. On Kairos, La Salle students learn to put aside our differences and trust one another as only brothers can. This year, the entire senior class can be proud to be part of such a terrific experience, a chance to make 255 new brothers. - Tucker Corr'09
