MR.JOSEPH

RADVANSKY The 2010-2011 yearbook is deservedly dedicated to Mr. Joseph Radvansky , who is more affectionately known as Coach Rad . Coach Rad has been teaching at La Salle College High School for 29 years, although he has done much more throughout the years. Many of the La Salle students have gotten to know Coach Rad during his 27 years as a freshman football coach, as a rigorous mathematics teacher, or as a dedicated and intense tennis coach . Despite leading the tennis team to four straight PCL championships and a District 12 championship, and coaching numerous dominant football teams, Coach Rad has had his most profound impact in molding young boys into gentlemen . He requires a discipline from his players and students that will turn them into men who will have a po sitive impact on society. His energetic and passionate teaching style always manages to get students invoived and interested in whatever math topic he may be teaching. Throughout everything Coach Rad has accomplished in his career, he has always been unselfish. Regardless of whatever is happening in his busy day, he will always take the time to talk to a former player, or to help comfort a troubled student or colleague. A true testament to his selfles sness is his dedication to his students and players. As a true Lasallian legend and a genuine gentleman, Coach Rad leaves a lasting legacy as a selfless mentor, teacher, and incredible man. Coach Rad, for all that you have done for all of us, thank you .

ENJER JOLEAR Every morning, we pass a sign that reminds us that we enter La Salle to learn . We enter an environment where we are taught about all aspects of life . Certainly we learn how to analyze literature, how to solve a physic s or calculus problem, or how to speak a different language, but we also learn broader life lessons. We learn respect, acceptance, and character. We take experiences from both inside and outside the classroom and use them to expand our academic knowledge and our life knowledge . We learn what it takes to be a true Lasallian gentleman through the example of our teachers, who dedicate so much time to their students, and our classmates, many of whom spend their afternoons doing service. When we, as seniors, leave La Salle, we can be confident that we have the classroom knowledge to be successful in college and beyond. But even more importantly, we can be sure that the character trait s we learned here will help us build a better and brighter future as we leave to serve. Will Marble '11

Over the past four years, the senior class has been blessed with receiving a quality education from La Salle College High School. The academic curriculum is undeniably rigorous, but the faculty and staff also encourage each student to develop a sense of responsibility. All of the students at this school are incredibly fortunate in that they have a chance to experience things truly unique to La Salle, like the Branch-Out Days freshmen and sophomores go on with their fathers. La Salle integrates service into student life throughout the four years of high school. When these young men graduate, they enter into the world to make the world a better place. The gratitude students and graduates at this school feel for all they have received in their lives is apparent through the many ways Lasallian students contribute to society. Boys enter La Salle College High School in order to learn and mature academically, spiritually, ethically, and socially. Students leave La Salle as gentlemen. They leave prepared to serve others and share the blessings they have received .

While walking down the halls of La Salle, one thing clearly stands out : the unwavering culture of both camaraderie and unparalleled freedom. While many high school stereotypes paint the time as a chaotic time filled with strict rules, drama, and feuds among students, La Salle embodies anything but . The halls of La Salle are busy and diverse, with students dedicating copious amounts of time to activities such as athletics, service, music, and art, yet over the past four years, the senior class has become a comprehensive, unprejudiced family . We all endure the challenging classes, but are free to use all other time as we please. If one wants to study in free time, they can . Play volleyball or basketball? Sure . Practice an instrument? Of course . At La Salle, everyone is respected for his own interests . Whether in class, studying, playing pit volleyball, or simply relaxing on free time, the time within La Salle's halls is enjoyed by all students . - Nick Walchonski

Over one thousand young men are proud to call La Salle home and everyday these young men enter La Salle's doors seeking the wealth of knowledge concealed inside its walls . The education that La Salle provides is not only based on its rigorous academic curriculum, but in the many extracurricular activities open to students. These extra- and co-curricular activities provide experiences that help develop students into well-rounded individuals. A very large portion of the student body is involved in these programs. These clubs and activities serve the whole student body, providing each student with many artistic, recreational, service, and academic programs, as well as many opportunities to develop his interests. La Salle prides itself on the many opportunities it offers its students, as these activities are open to all. Through these many activities, La Salle shows its dedication to its students and to the education and development of true gentlemen . - Christopher McElroy '11

leadingLa .Salle

The 2010-2011 Student Council had a very successful year . It unified the student body, upheld strong traditions, and brought creative new events into the yearly routine . The 2010 -2011 school year was one of excitement and energy . The student sections at each sporting event uplifted the players, and were the envy of the rest of the Catholic League schools. The senior student council took the lead on pep rallies and mixers, complete with jousting,

tie -dye, and the Berk-Man . The wing bowl, super mixers, videos, dress-downs , the occasional white-out, and Fran Johnson Field Day filled the school year with variety and excitement, and your student council enjoyed every minute of it . We would like to thank Mrs . Maher, Mr. Cirelli, and Mr. Johnson for all of the help and support that contributed to the success we've had this year! -Sam Hyder '11

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY pillc1r0 of our 0chool communitLl Scholarship. Leadership. Character. Service. These characteristics are the pillars of the National Honor Society. The NHS is an organization comprised of juniors and seniors that is dedicated to intellectual and personal honor, inside and outside of the classroom. The faculty leaders -Ms. Shustack and Mrs. Marchese- and the student leaders -Seamus Mooney, Kevin Gillespie, Nick Frazzette, and Chris Dearolf- along with the student members have served the community in various ways. Service is certainly emphasized within the NHS. The principal way that the student members serve the La Salle community is through tutoring fellow students.

Th e NHS also organizes the annual blood drive at La Salle and participates in many events at the school, such as: Open House and Freshman Registration. Finally, the National Honor Society serves the community in conjunction with Saint Joseph's University through Hand in Hand, in which students sponsor a special child for the day. Through the honorable characteristics of scholarship, leadership, character, and service, the students of the National Honor Society are able to use their unique talents to aid La Salle as well as the greater community . -James (Seamus) Mooney '11

LASALLIAN SERVICE CORPS

livingthe call to love other0 Aside from rigors of academics and other activities, service plays a large, daily role in the lives of La Salle Students. The dedicated Campus Ministry team organizes service projects and the students of the Lasallian Service Corps spread the news of service activities . Each day after school and on the weekend there is a service opportunity for students, whether it is Elder Share or La Salle Academy. In pursuit of service year round, Campus Ministry has organized six summer service trips, including the Native American Experience to Navajo Nation along with

seasonal service projects such as Operation Santa Claus. Encouraged by Christian Brothers' teachings and Christian ideals in general, students actively participate in all sorts of service even though it is not required. La Salle students genuinely want to help and work with others . By doing God's work, students grow spiritually, make new relationships, recognize the need to constantly support those in need, and take with them a rewarding experience. -Patrick Kerr '11

unbelievc1ble opportunitite0to 0erve difierentculture.3 As students at La Salle, we are not only called to be benefactors of the Lasallian mission, but to also participate in it. Through the Blackfeet Immersion trip in Montana, we were able to experience this calling to service like never before. We worked at a Christian Brothers' grade school called De La Salle Blackfeet, and we were able to help out by installing a Smart Board, painting hallways, and helping in other ways to play our own part in creat-

ing a great learning environment for the underprivileged children there. We had visitors to our bunk house who provided excellent insig ht into the Blackfee t culture, helping us to form an understanding of the history and long-term problems plaguing their society. Along the way, we were able to make friendships that truly made our trip to the Blackfeet Reservation a spectacular experience. Kevin Gillespie '11

La Salle leaves great memories in the minds of all of its students. One of these many great memories is Grandparents' Day. This wonderful day in November, just days before Thanksgiving, is a great opportunity for students to show off this great school. It is also a wonderful day for grandparents to appreciate all La Salle has to offer, spend time with their beloved grandchildren, and even catch up with some old friends. The day kicks

off for the grandparents at a Thanksgiving prayer service in the gym . Following the service, grandparents can meet up with their grandsons, go on a tour of the school, and take a lasting picture to always remember this joyful day. The proud, gleaming faces of the grandparents and the happy smiles of the students is a sure sign that this event is a very meaningful day for both . -Jack Farris '14

BAND in0trumentc1l geniu0

Led by Mr. Vettori and Mr. Ciccimaro, La Salle's music department is one of the best in the area. Over 400 students are involved in the music department and its many bands and ensembles . Most students are involved in La Salle's Pep Band . Every fall the Pep Band braves freezing temperatures, rain, and snow, following the football team across Penn sylvania. La Salle's pit orchestra, which provides the music for La Salle's sprin g musical, stands apart from many other high school bands as it is entirely com-

prised of and conducted by the students. The Competition Jazz Band and the Lab Band are at the heart of La Salle's music program, competing again st some of the best high schools around the area. This year the band was lead by president, Eric Stone '11, and vice presidents, Chris Dearolf '11 and Will Pisco '11 . La Salle is blessed to have some of Philad elphia's best musicians give their time to teach and continue the great tradition of music at La Salle. -Chris McElroy '11

CHORUS one voice

The La Salle Chorus is an integral part of the entire music program. Directed by Mr. Mark Norman, the Chorus is comprised of about 50 students . The Upperclassmen Chorus practices multiple times every week both as an ensemble and in vocal part sectionals. The freshmen members also meet and practice as a dis tinct group every other school day. Upperclassmen also have the opportunity to audition to be a part of the Belcrofters, the advanced Chorus. Members participate in two formal concerts during the school year. The pro -

gram additionally supplies music for liturgies and special school events . As the program continues to grow, it looks to provide students with a wide background of musical genres, styles, and languages. For instance, this year, the chorus sang in Spanish, Latin, Gaelic, while performing both with accompaniment and a cappella . A group of four students also sang as a barbershop quartet . As La Salle progresses, the chorus grows with the school as a great way for students to express themselves and develop their gifts. -Eric Stone '11

FALL DRAMA Qlithe.Spirit

Noel Coward's Blithe Spirit tells the story of a husband's worst nightmare. The play begins with Charles Condo mine (Matt Volpe '12), a successful British author, happily married to his second wife , Ruth (Leah Turner '12). An evening cocktail party with friends Dr . Bradman (RyanMcCann '11 / Tim Fickenscher '12) and Mrs. Bradman (Mary Kate Glenn'12) takes a turn for the eccentric with the arrival of Madame Arcati (Keira Wingert '11). Though the others invited her merely as a joke, they are quickly proven wrong when Charles's first wife, Elvira (Amanda Shur '12) is conjured up from the grave! Charles is in shock, but to make matters worse, he's the only person that can see or hear her! Edward the Butler (Cormac Hoffman '12) makes several awkward and hilarious appearances throughout

the show as confusion and comedy ensue. Charles tries vainly to send Elvira back and deal with his outraged second wife, all while Elvira attempts to kill him so that they can be together on "the other side". However, after an unfortunate "accident", it is Ruth that joins Elvira in the spirit world and, having made up their minds together, the two specters decide to spend their eternity haunting the hapless Charles. The performances, of course, would have been nothing without the dedicated work of the stage crew, Mr. Hearn, Mrs. Kelley, and directors Micky Dominick and Mark Norman. Thanks to the tireless efforts of these people, Noel Cowards ludicrous farce came together with hysterical success! -Matt Volpe '12

SPRIN& MUSICAL The Drowo~ChDperone This year , the La Salle sta ge hosted a raucously funny , witty, and intriguing musical : The Drowsy Chaperone . The show itself follows a man (simply named "Man in Chair") who play s the soundtrack to his favorite musical for the audience, while the whimsical musical he helps narrate tells the story of a show girl who wants to give up her life on stage for her debonair love. This simple tale is woven into the several other subplots, which include gangsters posing as pastry chefs, a European "ladies man," and a self-ab-

sorbed diva playing the Chaperone . The entire production is packed with bit comedy and fast-paced one-liners. As the show develops , however, the Man begins revealing his own past and trul y remind s the audienc e th e purpose of musicals: to escape from the real world , if only for a little while . Thanks to the efforts of Mr. Dominick, Mr. Norman , Mr. Vettori, the student-run pit orch estra , and the entire cast and crew, this production was a success that will surely not be forgotten . - Eric Stone '11

no funn8 bu.3ine00here ju0t hardcore litigation In their 2011 season , the La Salle Mock Trial team's number of members was at its highest since 2004 . This year, there was an increase in interest among underclassmen. Since the preseason start in the fall, the team worked on and prepared to try a civil court case . The case dealt with a contract dispute over the rights to cancerous cells that, ironically, had the potential to kill cancer. La Salle sent two well-prepared Mock Trial teams to competition in the Pennsylvania Mock

Trial Program with the intent of taking last season's successes and building upon them. Both teams were positive and hoped to make a run for the county title, but unfortunately they fell short. Despite the unfortunate outcome of this year's competition, the team collectively gained experience in the courtroom and expects to make wave s next season under the future leadership of its current juniors . This year, the Forum, La Salle's speech and debate team, continued to be one of the strongest programs locally and a force to contend with nationally. The team began the season with tournaments at Yale, Bronx High School of Science, and Apple Valley High School, with several members of the team advancing to elimination rounds in these early tournaments. La Salle continued its success at the George Mason University Tournament in December, where Will Marble '11, Rob Gormisky

'13, and the team of Frank Worthington '12 and Bill Toner '12 qualified for elimination rounds. The team finished off its regular season with tournaments at Emory and Harvard. Finally, seventeen students qualified to compete at the state finals at Susquehanna University and the team looks forward to more success in the National Catholic tournament and the National tournament at the end of the school year . - Will Marble '11

VIE1NAM WAR MEMORIAL 1RIP mr miller c1ndhi0 clc:100 goe0 to wc10hington In his 23rd year of teaching the History of Vietnam, Mr. Miller took his 57th and 58th classes to Washington D.C. to visit the Vietnam Veterans' Memorial. The biannual trip includes visiting Arlington National Cemetery, in addition to other memorials in the National Mall. The highlight of trip was the class's visit the Vietnam Veterans' Memorial or "The Wall" as it is commonly known. While at the wall each student found and etched the name of the soldier they researched from the Philadelphia Vietnam Veterans'

Memorial. After witnessing the tremendous respect, gratitude and honor paid to those whose names are on "The Wall" by those who visit, everything we learned in class came into perspective . Mr . Miller's Vietnam classes in the past have been fortunate enough to read the names off "The Wall" during the 20th and 25th Anniversaries, in addition to being the first high school to donate money to the education center that is currently being planned. KAIROS

the Lord~ time

The Kairos retreat, a four day experience of God, self, and others, is a wellguarded and much anticipated part of senior year . As each retreat returns home, it is evident that the retreatants have experienced profound growth during Kairos. Through a change in perspective that Kairos offers, other changes are witnessed as well: a change in how we value ourselves, how we empathize with others, and how we see God.

As a time to open up, reflect, and grow, the four days at Diamond Ridge offer moments of clarity as we learn to appreciate the good things in our lives and let go of the bad things. The brotherhood, manifested in the new friendships, genuine support of each other, and overall unity , has brought the Class of '11 closer than ever thought possible. Kairos, meaning God's Time, is an experience that we will cherish for the rest of our lives . -Dom Mirabile

Change is something many are unaccustomed to. As over 260 boys come together as one class, to grow and learn together, there are striking hardships to the transition. Learning to juggle eight periods, adjusting to the all-male atmosphere, and experiencing classes with sophomores, are all a part of life as a freshman . These things become known as the year goes on, but on that very first day: it is just you against a school of over 1,000 boys . Realizing the different styles and preferences of

132 • La Salle College High School

teachers become apparent as they read over the class syllabus . The delicious cookies appeal instantly once entering the lunchroom and the freshman knows it will be a four-year battle in moderation. Optimism is easy though, once the freshman realizes how many students there are just like him. Sharing fears and hopes can bond the freshmen class, joining together men who will be friends for life. It all starts on the first day. Daniel Spinelli '14

Sophomore year is a very important year as we make our way through La Salle College High School. We are no longer freshmen and are now more comfortable in the great environment La Salle has to offer. As sophomores we are treated as responsible young men and are expected to take responsibility for the work we are given in our academic life, as well as in our extracurricular activities. Throughout our sophomore experience, we learn to manage our work in each class and maintain a good work ethic.

140 • La Salle College High School

At La Salle, there is always a sense of brotherhood and belonging, and it is reinforced during our second year. The friendships we made during freshman year, with both the faculty and other students, are strengthened and have grown. As sophomores, we want to make the freshmen feel the support we had from the upperclassmen during the past year . Both in and out of school, we strive to live the life of Lasallian gentlemen to greater exemplify the lessons learned during the first two years. Dan Fleck '13

1RSCLASSOF 2012JUNIORS CLASSOF 2012JUNIORS CLASSOF 2012JUNIORS CLASSOF 2012JUNIORS Cl Junior year at La Salle is, in the words of Mr. Parisi, "Where you guys begin to actually become men." This fresh adage brings with it the embodiment of our academic, athletic, and social experiences during this pivotal year. More difficult classes, thoughts of college, and emerging leadership positions not only prepare us to be men, but prove that in many ways, we already are. By December, with outstanding results on the PSATs and numerous championship sports teams, the Class of 2012 had only just begun to show its potential. In addition to academic and athletic pursuits, the members of the Junior Class begin to take on promi-

nent roles in service opportunities and extracurricular activities alike. From Operation Santa Claus to Urban Challenge, Speech and Debate to the Engineering Club, students have stepped up to the task with great vigor. The Junior Class's greatest achievement, however, is our newfound unity : the understanding and appreciation of our brotherhood as a Lasallian community. During our third year together , faces become more familiar, friendships are cemented, and students evolve from separate entities into the unified bod y that is the Class of 2012.
