Change can either be good or bad. For many, the transition from grade school to high school is one that can be categorized as an important, but difficult change. The incoming members of the freshmen class of La Salle were aware of this formidable transition when they entered one of the most competitive high schools in the region. This new environment frightened some, excited others, but enlightened all, as the fresh faces of the La Salle community were now ready to take on the challenges of high school. To help combat these demanding changes, old friendships were strengthened and new ones were formed, whether in the classroom, on the athletic field, in the band room, or on the theater stage. With these new friends and through their clubs and activities, the freshmen class began to form a true La SaJlian identity, finally finding their place in this great school. Furthermore, through events such as Freshman Branchout Day, Grandparents Day, and the PCL football champion¡ ship (where La Salle continued its fall tradition of beating St. Joe's Prep), the freshmen class have come to embrace La Salle, consid¡ ering it their home away from home. Sophomore year is not the most time-consuming of years but has been pivotal for the development of La Salle's Class of 2015. Because the sophomores are no longer new to La Salle, they have begun to feel comfortable in their home for the next three years. No longer having to worry about adjusting to school, making friends, and joining clubs, the sophomores have found the time to focus on better knowing themselves and each other. Compared to freshman year, sophomore year Is much more personal. The sophomores feel comfortable in their new environment; they have been given the time to figure out their interests and develop friendships. Whether it is in lacrosse, soccer, fencing, or theatre, the Class of 2015 has pursued its passions. As they look forward to junior year and even further to college, the sophomores know there will be struggleshowever, they also know that La Salle has given and will give them perseverance to make it through these struggles and make it to the finish line in two years. wColin Murtha

The nexus of high school occurs in junior year, when grades really matter, the SATs dominate free time, and college seems so close yet so far. In this vitally important year, the junior class finally begins to etch its mark on La Salle's storied history, Juniors have matured, but are not yet men. They have developed close relationships, but are not yet "brothers of La Salle," In a sense, the social experience of high school is built to culminate in senior year with Kalros and ultimately graduation, but junior year Is the most important time academically as well as developmentally, As the juniors have been told again and again in their College Counseling classes, colleges will closely analyze this year as a critical part of their admissions decision. Ultimately, junior year is a time of consequence, The noted American author Kurt Vonnegut once wrote, "Life is nothing but high schooL" If Vonnegut is correct, then junior year-as the nexus of high school-is more vital than any thirdyear La Sallian could ever have imagined. Throughout this year and since the time of the induction the new student council has worked very hard to accomplish and start events in hope to create new traditions at La Salle. For instance, Manuary 2013, where students were able to grow out their facial hair over Christmas break and return with whatever facial hair they had. All proceeds went to Prostate Cancer Awareness, it was a tremendous success. As well as the 1st Annual Invita· tiona I High School basketball eYQ tournament. Paired with new administra-

tive members, the student council on all grade levels have been working on their respective projects as the current and future leaders of the school. With more ideas popping up everyday, we hope to make this year the most experienced so far. l~~~~~==~~~~~~=====~~Jenjoyable and unique experience La Salle students haveAndrew Carlone '13

The National Honor Society is comprised of juniors and seniors who have distinguished themselves in the areas of scholarship, character, leadership, and service. Each Spring, a ceremony is held to officially accept newly in¡ vited members into the La Salle Chapter of this national academic organization. The principle service performed by the members is tutoring students who are having difficulty with one or more of their subjects.

Throughout the school year, campus ministry gives students here at La Salle the chance to participate in a variety of service opportunities. Lasallian Service Corps, made up of students in all grades, daily promotes the different projects throughout the week. These activites range from tutoring elementary students at La Salle Academy to sharing time at Elder Share. All of the programs are well attended by students, faculty and staff. Students can be found every day of the week at service projects. Involvement in service is an intrinsic part of what the La Salle student becomes after graduation. He is able to grow in his relationships with God, with his peers and with those whom were once strangers. He truly "leaves to Serve." Denis Harp '13 L..

La Salle's Music program is something to be marveled. One of, if not the top, high school music programs in the Delaware Valley, La Salle's Music Department faculty consists of top performing musicians in the area who also teach at the university level. Led by Mr. Cicdmaro and Mr. Vettori, La Salle's Music Department promotes a creative and comfortable learning environment in which each student can grow and develop their musical talents in a way that is specific to them. Being part of the Music Department has allowed me to be extremely active in my lasallian community. From supporting our football team at pep band games, to jazz competitions, to the annual school musical, the music program has allowed me to be present at and involved in La Salle events, giving me countless memories that I cherish and value. Four years as part of this awesome program has given me the opportunity to develop friendships and learn more about myself. La Salle's music program has not only helped

me grow musically but has helped me to mature and grow as a person. MU-l~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ sic has been such a large part of my time here at LaSalle that I can honestly say it has shaped and formed who I am as a person today. -Chris Mele '13

LA SALLE IS ALIVE WITH THE SOUND OF MUSIC!

The glee on Doug Michie and Mike Mullin's faces Isn't coming from the song they're singing, but from the texts they're readlng ••. whoopsl

Providing sonorous delight to the La Salle community each year is the Chorus, led with great pride by Mr. Mark Norman. The Chorus consists of three different parts: the upperclassmen chorus, the underclassmen chorus, and the Belcrofters. These three distinct groups come together twice a year, in December for Christmas and in May for spring, to perform various songs from an ever-growing catalog of classic show tunes, multHingual chants, and past·and·present radio hits. Chorus class is always a fun time because Mr. Norman makes sure to liven it up and keep things interesting for every~ one involved. Whether discussing current events, celebrating the basketball team's victories, or practicing new songs for concert, everyone is always fully engaged in class. Members of the Chorus are also involved in the play, as well as the football, basketball, and lacrosse teams. This diversity of ac~ tivities shows that the Chorus really is one giant melting pot. Truly, that is what makes it great. Kevin Groome '13 ' - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -....

BAREFOOT IN THE PARK

Oh how the tables have turned ••• Ethel (Vldor..1 TralUcs) went from Inlt, allv disliking VIctor (John Schoenewald) to chatting aftcr thclr w,ld night togcther

Here, at La Salle, the beginning of a new school year marks the commencement of all the great clubs, activities, and events that make the time spent here so incredibly diverse and interactive; the fall sports start up again, the clubs hold their first meetings, and soon the student body is busy once more. This time of recommencement includes the much loved La Salle Fall Drama. This year, students, faculty, and friends were treated to the hilarious Barefoot in the Park. The wonderful 1960s comedy, filled to the brim with hysterical farce, sarcasm, and wit, is centered on newlyweds Carie (Ann-Marie Maloney) and Paul Bratter (Josh Graham (13) during their arduous journey to both marital happiness and success. Throw in an overbearing motherin-law (Victoria Tralies), a wild eccentric with no concept of personal space (John Schoenewald (14), an inconveniently awkward telephone repair man (Mark Chandler (13) , a surprisingly ancient delivery man (Dan DeBrakeleer (13), and some cheap scotch and you've got the insanely funny, wild ride that is Barefoot in the Park. The great direction provided by Micky Dominick and Mark Norman combined with the winning performances, sidesplitting script, and Incredibly skilled stage crew formed yet another memorable production on the legendary La Salle stage. For most of my life, I have had my eyes set on a career in journalism, and being Involved in the Wisterian only confirmed that dream. I was scared of not being old enough for the newspaper but the students, led by Mr. Janda and Mr. Holwick, were extremely welcoming to me once I joined. It really is awesome how welcoming as a group Wisterian was then and continues to be today. Needless to say, my past three years with the Wisterian have been a blessing in disguise. Besides meeting creative and multi¡talented students from various grades, my thinking and writing skills have greatly benefitted from my involvement with the newspaper. On a smaller scale, I have been able to see how a newspaper operates from brainstorming about the story, to interviewing the right people, and to Anally publishing an edited version of the story. The experience that I and every student who works on the Wisterian has teaches us a great deal about working hard, getting things done, and achieving goals. That is what makes the Wisterian such a blast to work on. Christian Endrigian '13

As one of the longest standing organizations at La Salle, the Blue & Gold staff works diligently to record every memory that will be cher路 ished by all in the future. Every Tuesday, long after school has ended at around 5:30 PM, in the library computer lab sit a group of diverse people who despite their differences in age, hobby or interest all share one common goal, which is to meet the deadlines of the yearbook. This most perfectly sums up the LaSalle Blue & Gold Yearbook club. The club is led by two of the most qualified and organized women at LaSalle Mrs. Haggerty and Mrs. Seeley. A common misconception about the yearbook club is that it is simply organized to complete a new edition of the yearbook every year. However, this is fallacy. Yearbook meetings are a great time to catch up with each other and talk about any stories we have, whether they're yearbook related or not. Another benefit is learning how to use InDesign, which is the software used to create and format the yearbook. Educating oneself with InDesign is advan路 tageous for it is a software that is prevalent throughout the business world. Another advantage of yearbook is learning the importance of deadlines. Throughout the year, those of us in yearbook are faced with a series of deadlines, which must be met or there will be missing parts to the yearbook. This practice of meeting deadlines is an extremely im路 portant practice to learn, for it is something that is required frequently in college and later in life in one's occupation. By the time we cross the finish line at the end of the year, we know that we've all created something tangible together. From the time we started picking themes in June rTree of Ufe" anyone?) until we finish the supplement in May, we are constantly coasting along, working consistently throughout the year. Overall, the La Salle Blue & Gold yearbook requires lots of pizza, Spotify, and photoshopping, but it sure is worth it.

Throughout the past few years, the engineering club has undertaken research projects to improve the school. From energy management protocols to solar panel investigations, the club actively seeks to keep La Salle at the forefront of technology. Over the course of the year, the engineering club has started in a new direction. During the first few months, students received an introduction to engineering and how they can better prepare themselves for

englMering white in high school. Underclassmen and upperclassmen alike participated in a project led by Villanova engineering students to analyze the strength of bone splints using rudimentary materials. Under the guidance of Mr. Cipolla and Mrs. Minton, the club will be designing solar powered signs on Paper Mill Road. The signs will be a long lasting reminder of the student contributions to the La Salle community. Eric Bridgeford' 13

The 2013 Mock Trial case of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania vs. Ta¡ tum Zillias pitted the state against the defendant Tatum Zillias, a developer in Philadelphia. All of the team members were happy at the chance to try a criminal case instead of a civil case, a new challenge for most of them. In the case this year, the owner of a public housing construction company was charged with two counts of murder in the third degree. The state argued that Mr. Zillias was responsible for the deaths of two people in a crane col¡ lapse on his site, which occurred during the arrival of a hurricane. This year's team was headed by seniors Brian LaGreca and Conor Lavelle. The lawyers prepared opening statements, direct and cross examinations of witnesses, and closing arguments for both the prosecution and defense. The witnesses memorized their statements and truly became their characters. There was never a dull moment during Sunday practices (even the never ending six hour ones). The Lab Managers form a unique team at La Salle College High School. Each year about fifty applicants request to join this team of the top technology students In the school. The program gives La Salle students the chance to have hands on experience running a real corporate network. The Lab Managers work with Mr. Peter Sigmund and Mr. Braden Bonner to maintain and upgrade the school's entire network. The members learn about technology by working with faculty and students on the computers

throughout the school. The students gain network experience from hands on work with the multiple servers that La Salle uses, and also learn Important life skills about dealing with people. The Lab Manager program is a one of a kind program that gives students the opportunity to run a network that consists of over 1200 users. This team of young men work together daily with a goal to make La Salle the most technologically¡equipped high school in the country. . Anthony Silvestri '13 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

The guys at WEXP are among the most devoted team members at La Salle. There is no off-season for the WEXP Crew, the students report to produce the morning show daily at 7: 15 AM under the watchful eye of Mr. Rob Johnson. Although you only see the guys on camera, there's a crew of 30 students involved in the daily operation of the WEXP Morning show. The show may not always be perfect, but the effort of the WEXP is unmatched on campus on a day-to-day basis. Hope you enjoyed the show this year!

CELEBRATING THE. GIFTS WE'VE BEEN GIVEN, ALL AROUND

THE WORLD• • One of the greatest aspects of La Salle is the summer service opportunities that we are afforded. Three groups of La Salle's rising juniors gave service in the city of Philadelphia, while 8 groups of rising seniors traveled around the globe to help the global community. Those 8 groups of seniors were divided between St. Lucia, New Orleans, Arizona, Montana, and Appalachia. Our eyes were opened when we landed in places that were completely different from our own towns and homes in suburban Philadelphia. While the tasks might have required a lot of energy. and the hours were long, the experience was absolutely incredible. Seeing the product of our work was incredible, but the graciousness and thanks in the eyes of the people we were helping was even greater. The people we met were just like us, just in different situations. Summer service teaches us that we all need to give back to our fellow brothers and sisters. Like Mass in St. Lucia, summer service really is a celebration of life and all that we have been given by God. Through the experiences of my group, and all of the other groups in Appalachia, Montana, Arizona, and New Orleans, La Salle has left an indelible mark on the global com· munity, and gotten to celebrate life in many ways with many different people. Led by seniors Joseph Heidt, Robert Gormisky, Conor lavelle, Arthur Bailin, and Jimmy Princivalle, 2011-2013 was another phenomenal season for the La Salle College High School Speech and Debate Team -- affectionately known as "The Forum.... After winning the Pennsylvania High School Speech league (PHSSl) State District # 11 Title for the 11th consecutive year, La Salle qualified 20 students to the State Finals in March. Sophomores Jack Grogan '15 and Conor Hogan '15 won the State Championship in Policy Debate. Junior Andrew Durkin '14 and sophomore Colin Hoffman '15 also had an extremely strong showing in Policy Debate finishing Fourth in the State. Robert Gormisky '13 was one ballot shy of another PHSSl State Championship for la Salle, finishing Second in lincoln Douglas Debate. Junior Dan Spinelli '14 also had a great tournament in Uncoln Douglas Debate, finishing Fifth in the State. Senior Arthur Ballin '13 advanced to the Semifinal Round in Extemporaneous Commentary, placing in the Top 12 in the State. la Salle also repeated as Philadelphia Catholic Forensics league (PCFl) Overall Speech and Debate Team City Champions, won the school's seventh consecutive PCFl Debate Team Championship, and had six students win individual PCFl City Championships. These six City Champions were among the fourteen la Salle students to qualify to the 2013 National Catholic Forensics league (NCFL) National Finals which this year were held here in Philadelphia over Memorial Day Weekend. la Salle College High School was the host school for the preliminary rounds of lincoln-Douglas Debate. Robert Gormisky '13 placed 4th nationally in Uncoln Douglas Debate at the NCFL Finals. Conor Lavelle '13, Conor Hogan 'IS, and Jack Grogan 'IS also placed in the Top 32 of their events at the NCFl National Finals. Based on these strong performances, La Salle was recognized with the Eleanor E. Wright Excellence in Debate Award which is presented annually to the top 5 schools based on the combined performances of their top entries in the debate events at the NCFL National Finals. La Salle was the only school from the Philadelphia area recognized with a School of Excellence Award at this year's tournament. The culmination of the season is always the National Forensics league (Nfl) National Speech and Debate Finals -- which is the largest academic competition in the world and marks the capstone of speech and debate actiVIties for nearly 110,000 high school students around the country. Andrew Durkin '14 and Kevin Gay '14 qualified to the NFL National Finals by winning the NFL Valley Forge District Championship in Policy Debate while Conor lavelle '13 qualified by placing second In Uncoln Douglas Debate at the in the District Tournament. Behind these and a number of additional strong performances at the District Tournament, la Salle was recognized with the Overall Debate Team Sweepstakes Award, presented to the top debate school in the Eastern PA region. At the National Finals, Andrew and Kevin advanced to the elimination rounds of Policy Debate and received awards for placing in the Top 50 nationally. Despite losing a great senior class, the team looks forward to another exciting season as more than 25 students will be returning for next year!

This spring, audiences were treated to four performances of the high·energy and upbeat musical: SWing!. Swing! was conceived by Paul Kelly, and directed by the production team of Micky Dominick and Mark Norman. What makes this show so special is that it is a musical revue, meaning there is no dialogue in the show at all. The show recreates the night club atmosphere of The Cotton Club and The Savoy in Harlem through the use of the big band on the bandstand. By allowing the band to be on stage, many things shifted from tradition. Musicians became actors, actors became musicians. At the same time, the show featured acrobatic dancing from many LaSalle students that cannot be rivaled by any other high school. The show featured many jazz standards including "It Don't Mean a Thing If It Ain't Got That Swing", "Boogie-Woogie Bugle Boy", and nAil of MeN as well as many others. The band, singing, and dancing all combined to make Swingl one of the most unforgettable La Salle productions ever staged. Mark Chandler '13
