Anatomy of an Explorer is the perfect theme for any La Salle Yearbook, however, this particular theme best characterizes this year. The concept of anatomy is vital to understanding the functions and the relationships of the human body. Furthermore, the concept of anatomy is the direct link to understanding a La Salle Explorer. Every aspect of LaSallian life is necessary to the structure of an explorer because an explorer cannot function at the highest level without every part in place. In addition, the anatomy of an explorer is always changing throughout the course of time and adjusts to the current time period. Special thanks, therefore, to Mr. Hearn for creating our "Vitruvian Explorer." This particular school year at La Salle has experienced continued success at every grade level in the areas of academics, athletics, the arts, and extra-circular activities. The Class of 2017 graduated 286 outstanding seniors with five National Merit Finalists and thirteen National Merit Commended Students. Also, 76% of the Class of 2017 has earned in excess of $36 million in documented scholarships and grants. On the field, La Salle captured nine PCL titles this year. In addition, the music program continued the tradition of success this year as well as several clubs. The spiritual life at La Salle continued to grow this year and will continue to strengthen this summer through the various service trips. From freshman to senior, each student is valued equally at La Salle for the unique talents that each student brings to La Salle, which is the foundation of an Explorer. Success is always found at La Salle in large quantities but the appreciation of the success at La Salle makes this school a special place. In addition, this particular school year has experienced a tremendous amount of change. The end of an era with the closing of "The Pit" and the well-deserved retirements of several beloved teachers and faculty members changes the anatomy of an explorer, but change is important for the growth of an Explorer. "The Pit" as well as the beloved teachers and faculty members will never be forgotten and will always hold a special place in La Salle history. Also, there have been many "first times" this year at La Salle. This year was the first time that Field Day was after the school year as well as the cafeteria operating out of the auditorium at the end of the school year. In addition, this year was the first time that graduation was not on the campus of La Salle as well as several other "first time" moments at La Salle. However, each change requires the anatomy of an explorer to adapt to the situations and change is beneficial in the long run. In conclusion, this yearbook is filled with great moments from throughout the year and each moment contributes to the formation of the Explorer. I challenge anyone who opens this particular yearbook to take the time to appreciate the success and value of every moment. In addition, pictures can only portray success to a certain degree, everyone should read the words associated with the pictures as well as the reflections from many members of the student body through the quotes and paragraphs about each aspect of La Salle. Stephen Joseph Paccione '17 Editor, Blue and Gold

"Remember the Ladies"
Dedication From offices to classrooms, studios to stages, eight gifted teachers have left their marks on La Salle, in heart, in mind, in clay, and in voice. Their generous spirits will inspire us all for many years to come. Jeanne Brabson has a special gift in working with all students, especially students in need. She was able to see the goodness that others often struggled to grasp. Jeanne leaves behind a legacy. Be honest. Be welcoming to all. LISTEN. Embrace change. Show care and concern for everyone. Don't ever right anyone off. And you are here to serve others not yourself. The teacher's responsibility is to not only teach the content but to teach beyond the content, to strive to support the person in that desk and help him grow as a man. -Anthony Mieczkowski
With her hands, heart and mind, Barbara Miller has inspired her students to take ownership of their ability to create original works of art, encouraging each learner to believe that his notions could be shaped into ideas that take on a physical life in clay, wood, metal, stone, paper and wire. H er love for her family and for service, through Poor Man's Supper, reflect our finest values. -Michael Hearn For the past fourteen years, Dr. Rosina Ryan has graced the hallways and classrooms of La Salle with her pleasant, kind, patient, and understanding presence. A wonderful and dedicated educator, Rose will be greatly missed by the students, faculty, and staff of La Salle. - Gerard Hartey Tina Shustack has dedicated her life to her students. In a demanding and compassionate way, she pushed them to be their best and to be accountable. As a former student, then colleague and friend, I am better for having been taught by Ms. Shustack. She will be missed greatly at La Salle and in the Math Department.

2017 Executive Officers of the student body Sean Diehl (Treasurer) Quinn O'Neill (Secretary) Cristian DeSimone (President) Mike Chiaradonna (Vice President)
It has truly been a lot of fun to be the Study Body President here at La Salle. There have been many great men before me that have held the position, so to follow in their footsteps has been an honor. As president, one of my biggest responsibilities was representing the school in a good fashion and establishing many events for school. From writing speeches to organizing mixers, proms, and homecoming, I've been involved in a lot with my council. Thanks to their help, I've been able to petition the cafeteria for cheaper food, design T-shirts for big games, and make funny videos with the characters of our school. I don't think I'll ever forget when Mr. Pinder boxed Mr. Zanneo in his cycling uniform at the fall pep rally. I would like to say thank you to the students for having me as their president. The guys here are the best thing about La Salle, and I've had a lot of fun representing all of you. I wish the best of luck to the underclassmen as they finish their time at La Salle, and I hope that the future presidents live on the traditions of the student body and make this school the best and most fun that it can be. - Cristian DeSimone

NSTRY AND SERVICE
SARNELLI HOUSE • HOMELESS OUTREACH • ELDER SHARE • VOLLEY FOR SERVICE • VISITATION BVM TUTORING With the help from senior leaders MarkMagarity, Quinn O'Neil, Matt DeMerlis, Brendan Price, John Loftus, Carson Delaney, Harry Scanlon, and Tom LaMorte, the Ministry and Service Team has been able to continue the traditions of faith, community, and service here at La Salle. The team has been successful in organizing drives in support of those in need, which include the Spread the Warmth clothing drive for Homeless Outreach and the Thanksgiving Can Food Drive for St. Vincent's Church. In addition, the Ministry and Service Team has started a new tradition at La Salle with a three on three basketball tournament in support of the organization Coaches vs. Cancer, successfully raising $1100 with over 200 students participating. The team had a busy April, helping support the Poor Man's Supper and the new Founder's Celebration Day, while also continuing the tradition of Volley For Service to finish the year. The Ministry and Service Team was able to achieve their success under the direction of Mr. Clark, Mr. Dominick, Mr. Devlin, and Mr. Chesnik. They provided the necessary insight to guide the team in the right direction during each event. Together, the senior leaders were able to create strong relationships with each other and with God in their efforts to take on the mission of service and continue the legacy of St. John Baptist De La Salle. - Matthew DeMerlis

I Kairos provides our students with an opportunity to reflect on themselves, others, and God.
Mrs. Giuliani's small group on Kairos 37114. Kairos 3 7-114 at Our Lady of Czestochowa.
A four-day retreat of God, Self, and Others remains a mystery for each class as they go through a rite of passage at La Salle. It was finally time for the Class of 2017 to embark on this journey and experience what the mystery of Kairos is all about. As each retreat returns horne, it is obvious that the retreatants have profoundly grown over the Kairos experience. Kairos changes the perspective of each senior as we experience a change in oneself, how we empathize with others, and how we see God. Kairos represents a time to open up, reflect on the memories behind us, and grow as we take on the opportunities ahead of us. Kairos allows the opportunity for each retreatant to realize the good in life, and to let go of the bad. As the last retreat carne home it was evident that there was a new bond built between the Class of '17 that cannot be broken. Kairos meaning "God's time" is something we will carry with us forever as we move on in life. -Cole Lerch
•••• •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Senior Leaders explain the theme for Sophomore
Freshmen listen attentively to a Senior talk. Mrs. Findlay's small group on Sophomore Retreat.
Mr. McCabe shares a personal reflection on Junior Retreat.
For the first time, Junior Retreat went off campus to Our Lady of Czestochowa.
UNDER RETR
During the school year, every freshman, sophomore, and junior has a retreat day. A retreat provides an opportunity to step back and reflect on your past experiences, see how you have grown through the years, both in and out of the classroom, and to look to your future. This year, the freshman theme is 'identity' and the retreat day takes place in August right before the newest members of the community begin their studies at La Salle. The sophomore theme is their 'life journey' thus far while the junior day revolves around a reflection on 'choices.' For the first time, the junior retreat was held off campus at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa in Doylestown. The students enjoyed a day free from all of the distractions of the school building and truly were able to bond with their classmates. All the retreats give the students time to look at how they have grown spiritually, mentally, and emotionally during quiet time and reflect on talks from both faculty and seniors on their life experiences. - Dan Solecki

B ND La Salle's music department boasts a variety of performing ensembles. Over 25% of the student body participates in music, creating a diverse and enthusiastic atmosphere. The music department put on a series of exceptional performances this year which included the Christmas Concert, Music Social, Jazz Assembly, and Spring Concert. In 2016, for the first time ever, a third competing jazz band was created: Lab Band II. All competing jazz bands, including the Comp Band and Lab Band, performed exceptionally well throughout the competition season, securing several sectional and outstanding soloist awards for seniors Joseph Marino, Tyler Dowling, and Scott Blanke. In April2017, the Comp Band won its third straight Cavalcade of Bands Championship in the Duke Ellington Conference, which is the highest division. At the Cavalcade of Bands Championship, the band also won Best Sight-Reading, Best Saxophone Section, and Best Trombone Section. Joseph Marino was also recognized with a Best Soloist Award. - Kyle Tokiwa

CHO
WINTER AND SPRING CONCERTS The La Salle Choral Program provides all students an opportunity to explore vocal performance with varying degrees of difficulty. Mr. Norman heads the program and teaches both advanced and regular chorus. There is a regular chorus class and an advanced or honors chorus class, both of which meet during a period in the student's schedule. Choral classes meet during 4th and 8th periods with the option of independent sessions with Mr. Norman. In addition to the full chorus, freshman students have their own choral class where they learn the large ensemble music and a few extra songs that they perform independently. In addition to their regular schedule, the choir performs an annual Christmas Concert as well as sings during school masses and assemblies. Students may also audition for the more advanced choral group called the Belcrofters as well as audition for the All Catholic and District choral groups. - Alister Virkler

This year's Fall One Acts consisted of several comedic shorts. "The McLaughlin Group" is a famous SNL parody skit of the classic 1980s weekly show of the same name. The skit consists of the leader of the television program, John McLaughlin, and his group of columnists. Throughout the act, John McLaughlin reveals his lack of sanity as he starts asking abnormal questions. "The Complete History of America Abridged" is based off of the Broadway play by Adam Long which takes a humorous approach to American history. In the particular section of the play that was performed, three college students present the colonial history of the United States in a condensed form. The final short, "The Story of Harambe," was written by La Salle's own Matt Harkins. The play centers on Harambe, the famous gorilla-turned meme, whose tragic incident gained significant amount of recognition in the Spring of 2016. Within the short, the character of Matt Harkins attempts to gain the approval of the One Act directors to perform his "masterpiece" of a show that revolves around the famed gorilla. None of these great experiences would have occurred if it were not for the hardworking and committed directors and student directors: Mr. McCabe, Mr. Norman, Mr. Sabatino, Mr. Mills, Quinn Giongo, and Matt Harkins. -Nathan Esser

Students in La Salle's theater program performed Mel Brooks's The Producers, a musical based on the 1960s movie of the same name. The musical follows Max Bialystock (Ryan Corr '17), a washed-up Broadway producer, and Leo Bloom (Jack Gimpel '18), Max's accountant, as they attempt to put on Springtime for Hitler, the perfect flop to keep all of the backers' money. Nothing turns out the way Max and Leo, and the audience, would expect. Along the way, they encounter Franz Liebkind (JV Fleuhr '19), a madman Neo-Nazi, Roger DeBris (Peter Macoretta '1 7), the show's overdramatic director, and his common-law assistant Carmen Ghia (Jacob Weyand ' 18). Under the direction of Mr. Dominick and Mr. Norman, the cast put on a wonderful and dazzling show full of laughs, songs, and goose-steps from March 23rd to the 26th. -Ryan Corr

D N E LUB
Latin Dance Club is a relatively new club at La Salle created and run by Mr. Arellano. Latin Dance Club gives students the unique opportunity to learn cultural dances such as the Bachata, Merengue, and Salsa. Having started only last year, the club now has seventeen members and is still growing. Members include Tommy Ramos, Will Cook, Martin Redanauer, J arett Scott, Chris Watson, Ted Felix, Keyshaun Epps, Byron Barre, Mike Kelley, Jared Singletary, Rahiim McIntyre, Jake DeLuca, Nando Addari, Chafen Ankrah, Quinn Lanahan, and Sebastian Scott. The group meets every Friday with its sister club at Gwynedd M ercy Academy and will also be expanding to Mount Saint Joseph Academy next year. The best part about Latin D ance Club is that no prior experience is needed. M embers learn each dance at a slow and easy pace so anyone can pick up the moves and follow along. Mr. Arellano breaks every step and turn down to their basic parts, making sure everyone is on the same page. He even provides personal instruction when needed. - M artin Redanauer

STAGECRE
Stage Crew working together to build a staircase for the spring musical.
Stage Crew is a group organized by Mr. Hearn of the Art Department, and is made up of students from every grade. Stage Crew exists not only to build the sets and props for the La Salle productions, but to assist in the live plays, where we act as the Run Crew. This means that we conduct all of the live set changes during the plays. Stage Crew meets after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays and sometimes on the weekends. When the play nears, Stage Crew begins practicing Run Crew during the play practices. Stage Crew puts in a lot of time practicing the set changes with the actors during the play practices using the sets that we construct prior, so that we end up with a very polished play by opening night. The combination of the hard work of Stage Crew, actors, lights, sound, directors, costume designers, choreographers, and the Play Staff result in amazing La Salle productions. Stage Crew is a great community to be a part of, especially because of the comradery built between the upper and lower classmen. - Danny Iannone

YEARBOOK
One of the many activities that students are involved with at La Salle is The Wisterian, the school's newspaper. Moderated by Mr. Janda and Mr. Holwick, the newspaper is published every quarter with all of its content created by students. Articles feature everything from the outcomes of sports games to teacher profiles. Students are allowed to choose to write about items that interest them even if they are not school related, such as current events or opinion pieces. In addition to writing articles, students also get experience shooting photography, conducting interviews, and working on the layout of the newspaper itself. - Michael McDonough Nick Shorn, Dan Rickers, Jacob Gandolfo, Tom Fiedler, Sean Corr, Zach Danchak, Derek Hammel, Colin McVeigh, Craig Wyke, and Matt Haarmeyer all pose for a group shot.

At the end of my junior year, my homeroom teacher asked the homeroom if there was anyone interested in being the editor of the yearbook in senior year. Without a lot of prior knowledge about the responsibilities of President of the Yearbook Club, I approached Mr. Pinder to tell him that I would like the position. In the fall of my senior year, I realized the true responsibilities of being President of the Yearbook Club. I had to organize a team of eight other La Salle students ranging from freshmen to seniors, I had to communicate meeting days and times with the rest of the team, I had to learn the InDesign system, and I had to track down students for copies and quotes for different areas of the Yearbook. My yearbook skills strengthened throughout the year and I finally began to feel comfortable with the terminology and software of the yearbook. The moderators of the Yearbook Club, Mr. Pinder and Mrs. Hoffman, helped me whenever I needed assistance in order to create a fantastic yearbook. - Stephen Paccione /

ENG INEE lNG
LUB
The main purpose of the Engineering Club is to educate its student membership on the various forms of engineering as well as giving them a taste of what it means to be an engineer. Each year the club decides on a major project for the members. The project is usually completed at the request of the administration and/ or other teachers or groups. For the 2016-2017 project, the Board asked for an afternoon vehicular traffic flow study to identify problems with the movement of vehicles leaving La Salle after school. Last year, the club completed a morning traffic flow study and identified several possible solutions to traffic back-ups on campus. The Board wanted to see if the solutions proposed last year would solve afternoon traffic flow issues as well. The study was completed and a presentation of findings Alex Wysoczanski, last year's president, returns to address the current Engineerwith possible solutions was presented to the Board and ing Club members. the administration in the spring. In addition to this major project, the Engineering Club repaired a defective Thomas the Tank Engine for Mr. Ciccimaro's granddaughter, and also provided input to the Board of Trustees on tree removal in the Environmental Study Area. - Mr. Cipolla
MULTI- ULTU
L LUB The Multi-Cultural Club focuses on learning about and celebrating other cultures' holidays, food, and entertainment. The club has had a number of events this year, including a day to share traditional food from our families' cultural backgrounds. The club has also spent time viewing and discussing multi-cultural movies, including Ring, the classic Japanese horror film, and Race, an American film aboutJC Owens, the American track and field athlete and four-time Olympic gold medalist in the 1936 games. Last year, on Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko's birthday, the club invited a Ukrainian poet to share some of her writings and to engage in a question and answer session about her view of current world events.

The Fencing Club, moderated by Mr. Williams, meets on five consecutive Thursdays after school in the fall and then again in the spring. During these fencing clinics we are taught the basic fundamentals and rules of fencing by a certified fencing instructor. Fencing traces its roots back to the Renaissance. It is a sport, science, and art all in one. The goal is to "win" points by making contact with certain parts of the opponent's body. There is also a code of etiquette that goes along with fencing. Mr. Norman Franke, our certified fencing instructor, patiently teaches us these fundamentals . The basic equipment consists of the foil, jacket, gloves, and mask. During the clinics we pair off and work together on our footwork and technique as Mr. Franke observes and offers constructive criticism or congratulatory remarks. At the final clinics in both fall and spring, Mr. Franke conducts a fencing tournament for everyone in the club. - Mr. Williams

Moderated by Mr. Keenan, the chess club is a group of students who meet every Tuesday to play the game that they all love. Whether it's playing to improve or just to have fun, these players all meet in room 310 at 2:30 to enjoy a challenging session of chess. Each week, students play against each other to practice their skills, try new strategies, or even outwit their friends. Chess has been known to stimulate the brain and to promote tactical skills, so it is a great way to improve logical thinking, a key tool in academics. Even if one does not care about that, it is still good time killer for those waiting for their bus, especially on a frigid cold day. It is also a great way to meet new friends and bond over a similar interest. There is no obligation to stay, so people can play one game and go, or stay and play the entire time. -Joe Mcintyre

La Salle's Global Studies Club is an academic organization that allows students to learn about global issues. La Salle students have attended five Model United Nations at Temple University, Georgetown University, Delaware University, and Germantown Friends School. On March 18,2017, the club ended the year with hosting our fourth annual High School Model United Nations. More than 150 high school students from the Philadelphia region debated on issues ranging from terrorism in the Middle East to trade agreements in East Asia. Students also had the opportunity to attend a summit hosted by the World Affairs Council in December. The event consists of a dialogue between the students and US diplomats about the nuclear situation in North Korea, as well as student lead debates regarding that same issue. The Global Studies Club also hosted events for keynote speakers to discuss their experiences in International Affairs. - Thomas Cawley
La Salle, in keeping with its mission to stay current and expand its extra-curricular activities based on student interest, has formed a Baggo Club. Baggo became popular in Cincinnati about 15 years ago. It has expanded throughout the country and has become extremely popular in the Northeast. You can find people playing on the beach, in backyards, and at tailgates. You can also find this game of skill being played by La Salle students in our cafeteria during winter months and outside during the nice weather. Baggo welcomes all who have the ability to hang out with friends and engage in some friendly competition. - Desmond Young

The La Salle College High School Explorers Football Team, coached by John Steinmetz, were set back early before the season started with injuries at multiple positions, and were counted out by many after an opening week loss to North Penn. H owever, they had leaders on both the offensive and defensive side and were able to forge their way toward success. Tom LaMorte led La Salle at Quarterback, while Syaire Madden led at Running Back. Madden had a fantastic season, running his way to a Philadelphia Catholic League MVP, a very impressive honor. The 2016 Explorers began their season with a 6-0 dismantling of Central High School behind a hat trick from senior Mike D'Angelo. The Explorers continued to play well and remained unbeaten for a total of fourteen matches to begin the season. During this run, which included wins over N orth Penn and Father Judge, La Salle rose to a top ten state ranking. La Salle entered the playoffs as the top seed and still unbeaten in the Catholic League. After handling St. Joseph's Prep, La Salle needed penalty kicks to defeat Archbishop Wood and advance to the Catholic League championship. In the final, La Salle met defending champion Roman Catholic, who was also undefeated in the Catholic League. In the first ten minutes, La Salle surged out to a 2-0 lead thanks to goals by Zach Hogan and Mike D'Angelo. For the next seventy minutes La Salle relied on veteran defenders and goalie Brett Werner to hold on for the 2-1 win. The Catholic League championship was the program's first in four years and eighth overall. A week later La Salle also captured the program's third District XII championship, with a 2-1 win over Northeast High School and earn a place in the State Tournament for the first time since 2012. The La Salle program led the Catholic League with seven members selected to the All-Catholic Team, including Catholic League Most Valuable Player, senior Spencer Patton. - Craig Hladik

La Salle Baseball is a very important part of my life. Over the past four years I have made some of my closest friends at La Salle and learned an innumerable amount of things about the game, myself, and life. This year 's team is a special one. Not only do we have the talent, but we have the work ethic and relentless attitude to do very special things. I believe I stand for all of the seniors when I say we have accomplished our goal. We set a precedent for years to come of a hard-working, selfless team mindset that we adopted as freshman and has made La Salle Baseball such a successful and enjoyable journey for all of us. I would not want to go to war with a different group of guys. Hooyah! - Michael Chiaradonna

• • The La Salle Water Polo team's success began with an intense preseason that involved traveling to various pools around the area, including La Salle University and Oreland Swim Club. After the rigorous two-week preseason, La Salle hit the (water polo) ball running with a winning streak of eight games. Through many tough, nail-biting games, the season ended with an impressive record of 21-7 . The team was second in the conference and made it to States. This was a season that left the Lasallian imprint of hard work and dedication on all members, as the team was named 5th best in the state. The team's success could not have been achieved without the incredible staff, players, and senior class . With the advantage of having Stephen Duncheskie as head coach, the players learned how to work as a team in and out of the pool. This year, the team participated in the Travis Manion Foundation by sorting out care packages for soldiers. The senior class was able to leave a vital imprint on the team because of their solid leadership and commitment to excellence. With Michael Dougherty, John Klein, Nick Conroy, and Bobby Halligan as Captains, Brian Mischler as Lieutenant, and Pete Marrocco as Bag Pipe Master, this senior class fostered a spirit of teamwork that will undoubtedly ensure a lasting legacy of success. - Brian Mischler Brian Mischler is all smiles swimming down the pool.

The Golf Team has become an impressive and intimidating opponent. This year, the team had an undefeated record in the Philadelphia Catholic League and won the coveted "hubcap." A number of players came of age. Nervous freshman became vital and appreciated members of the team, sophomores developed into mature competitors, juniors put up strong scores in competition, and seniors brought the team together. Teammates who really improved this season include juniors T.J. Chaykosky, Alex Parlanti, Buddy Hansen, Matt Acker, and Tim Lorenzo along with sophomore Frankie Gregor. Include freshman sensation Steve Lorenzo coupled with the skills of senior Brent Schoeller and you had a nucleus that struck fear in even the boldest of opponents. Each player was pivotal to the success of the team and everyone worked hard during the summer to groom themselves into extremely talented golfers. This group of guys is very special and La Salle can expect big accomplishments in years to come. It's only a matter of time before they earn a gold plaque in the gym signifying the highest accomplishment that the team can achieve. -Cole White

BASKET ALL .............................. A GAME OF STAMINA The 2016-2017 Explorers had a season of up and downs. The team showed great character thanks to the leadership of captains Matt Paulus, Jarrod Stukes, Konrad Kiszka, and Zach Crisler. The team overcame many obstacles including multiple injuries throughout the season. The first two non-league games for the Explorers were held in State College, Pennsylvania where they finished 1-1 in the tournament. The Explorers started off the season strong going 7-3 in non-league play, beating some of the top teams in the state. The Explorers played extremely well in the Jameer Nelson Play by Play classic beating Carlisle and Saint Elizabeth. The Explorers beat Carlisle in a thrilling overtime game. However, the strength of the Philadelphia Catholic League was a big test for the Explorers who finished 5-8 in league play. The team's season came to an end in the first round of Catholic League playoffs with a loss to Archbishop Carroll. The Explorers have college talent on their roster as well. Senior guard Matt Paulus is committed to play at Ursinus College while fellow senior guard Jarrod Stukes is committed to Clarion University. Sophomores Zach Crisler and Konrad Kiszka also picked up a number of Division I offers. The Explorers hope to bounce back next year as they hold a bright future with a lot of talent in the program. -Dan Solecki Matt Paulus from downtown!

We played many hard-fought games against skilled opponents and came away with many key wins and comebacks that are not to be written off. It was truly something special to see the boys come together as they did coming down the home stretch of the season. T he passion for and love of the game fueled the pride of playing hard for the name on the front of the jersey up until the very end. I am very proud of the guys for the heart, character, and growth each of them showed throughout the season, and I am confident that the underclassmen will be able to uphold the long-standing competitive reputation of the La Salle Ice Hockey Program. - Tyler Pohlig

T he La Salle Explorers made their triumphant return to the squash courts this fall! After going dormant for nearly fifty years, twenty-four students participated in the newly formed club. Under the direction of Mr. Butt, the boys learned the game and quickly learned to play at a competitive level. The team used the courts over at Chestnut Hill Academy and consistently went to clinics to improve their skills. The Explorers competed against other schools in the area including St. Joseph's Prep, Penn Charter, and Germantown Academy. The team had a fantastic preliminary year and racked up some wins against experienced players. The team hopes to join a league next year and hopefully play for some titles. - Robert Uzzo

LEAVE NO PIN STANDING The bowling team had another constructive year. The team worked diligently and made it to playoffs. It was also a great year for new recruits. There are a lot of freshmen and sophomores who showed a lot of promise and will be able to grow the team over the next couple of years. Even though we didn't go far as we wanted, the next two years will undoubtedly bring success. As a team, we really appreciate the coaches and the parents that help keep the show going. They get us much needed food for practices and matches and help us become better players. As a team, we grew very close this year, making lots of great memories. Since there are a lot of new players, it was interesting getting to know everyone in the beginning of the season. The new guys took a bit to open up but once they did we started to have a lot of fun during practices and games. That helped us a lot because we do a lot better when we are having fun and working as a team. Everyone on the team had a great time and is looking forward to next year! -Jonah Lebiedzinski

ONE STROKE AT A TIME The 2016-17 La Salle Explorer Swim Team had a memorable season, ending with a 29th consecutive Philadelphia Catholic League Title, District XII title, and earning the honor of State Runner-Up. The team filled the four-lane pool outside of the locker rooms from November-March, ready to try to defend their 5th consecutive State Title and 2016 National Championship win. The team was very young, and the freshman and juniors stepped up big time to drive the team throughout the season. During the regular season, the team went undefeated, winning all of their Catholic League meets, as well as non-conference meets against Malvern Prep and Upper Dublin. At Districts, freshman Liam Smith and Andrew Pave were able to qualify for their first State Championship meet, as well as sophomore Evan Parkhill, and juniors Sam Grossi and James McErlean. Seniors Jake Sannem, Liam Duffy, Jacob Lubinski and John Klein rounded out the team to Bucknell, finishing as State runners-up, due to their phenomenal performances from the 200 and 400 Freestyle relays, as well as individual All-American performances by John Klein and Jake Sannem. - Jacob Lubinski John Klein working on his backstroke start.

HUGE HURDLES The 2016-2017 Indoor Track and Field season was filled with excellent performances for the Explorers. Improving consistently throughout the regular season, the Explorers made a statement in the championship. On February 12th, 2017 , the Explorers captured their 3rd consecutive Indoor Championship. Dominating the league, the team scored in 15 of 16 total events, scored 2 or more places in 12 of 16 events, and finished no worse than 2nd in any of the 4 relays, showing their strength and depth in all events. Individual PCL champions from the day include Noah Walker in the Shot Put, Jonathon Squadrita in the High Jump, Luke Crawford in the Pole Vault, Evan Addison in the Mile, Alex Sislo in Long Jump, and Zach Beavers in the 60m High Hurdles. Then, at Penn State University, on February 25th, 2017, the Explorers closed out their strong season with a plethora of athletes competing. A favorite of the many Coach Bieleclcisms' is to "trust the process." After winning the Indoor Track and Field PCL championship in February, the team merely restarted the process that has led to our previous successes: strong work ethic in the face of adversity. Without many meets, the month of March is always a grind period with high mileage and constant workouts. Despite the amount of work the team put in, the first meets in late March and early April didn't display what we knew in our hearts we could accomplish, especially as several members of our team faced illness and injury.
Far left: Ryan O'Neill leads a pack of LaSalle runners during the 800. Left: John Loftus grinds through the arduous 2 mile race.
Below: Octavius Carter runs down the track during a relay with a hatton.
A turning point for the team occurred at North Penn Knight's Invitational on April 13th with a dominant showing in the mile with five sub 4:40 times and a 4:32 from sophomore Matthew Zilligen. This confidence extended to an even more impressive meet at the CB West relays during the next weekend, as the 4x800m team flexed a sub-8 minute time and the 4x200m team, led by senior Alex Sislo, broke a 40-year old school record. At the Penn Relays, the 4x100m and DMR teams, featuring junior studs Octavius Carter and Evan Addison respectively, raced exceptionally well in highly competitive heats.

Now on the eve of championship season, the team is poised for great things. The 2016 cross country campaign kicked off with a close regular season victory against PCL rival Cardinal O'Hara. Several weeks later, La Salle faced their foes yet again in the Briarwood Invitational, but this time taking third overall to O'Hara and Indian Hills in a close contest. The highlight of the day was not from the varsity race, but from the JV A, B, and freshmen races. The A team swept the first 5 spots to claim the title, and the B team handily won their race as well. The freshman squad, led by Vmcent Twomey, went 1-2-3-4-6 to cap off the day. Next, the Explorers visited Hershey for the PIAA Foundational XC Invitational, where Evan Addison and company got revenge on O'Hara, winning the race 96-1 71. The next real test carne at PCL championships, where the blue and gold showed their true depth. The freshmen continued to impress, as Ethan Mather led the team to another easy win. Soon after, the Explorers, guided by the brilliant run of David Kennedy, took the top eleven spots en route to the win. E+R=O The lacrosse team has had an extremely successful season so far, and we are definitely excited for what is ahead of us. We have a fun, enthusiastic, and motivated group of guys that has worked hard all year, and we have seen a lot of success this season. We opened the season with some valuable scrimmages against Episcopal and Delbarton, and we've only grown since then. Our mantra this year was #lLSLAX- really focusing on the positive aspects of the program as a whole, and everyone has really bought into the saying. After a tough loss to the Hill Academy, we came back strong with a big comeback win against Malvern. From there, our team really clicked and found the right energy to keep on winning, rallying up wins against Conestoga, Radnor, St. Joseph's, and De Matha. The team has remained strong through every challenge, and the guys have grown with each win, adding each success to our energy moving forward. As glad as we are to have had a good season so far, we really remain focused on the challenges ahead. -Sean Diehl

.............................. LOVE THE BATTLE A healthy mix of new faces and returning players allowed the team to maintain the success they enjoyed in previous seasons en route to capturing their 11th straight PCL Championship! Captained by seniors Joe Devine and Matt DeMerlis, as well as junior Andrew Lutschaunig, the team came into the season with the loss of seven seniors. In addition, the team received a huge blow in losing first singles player Andrew Lutschaunig to a season-ending injury. Yet, with young new players like freshman Daniel Porreca, sophomore Nick Harris, and juniors Owen Williamson and Nick Towers, the team was able to reach familiar success at the top of the Philadelphia Catholic League. Seniors Joe Harris, Matt Hladik, and Gus Williamson comprised the backbone of the team, providing enthusiasm and support when the team needed it most. Key players like Rob Denny and Austin Lordi provided consistency at the doubles level and gave the coaches some flexibility. With another undefeated PCL season under the leadership of Coach Brett and Coach Rad, the team had their eyes set on the championship. The team accomplished that goal by winning the PCL at Chestnut Hill College, closing out a tight 3-2 win over St. Joseph's Prep. Although the season unfortunately ended during the District 12 Championship, the team defied all expectations and became a family in the process. The team realized that in the end, it's not about the result, but about the "battle" we all learned to love. - Matthew DeMerlis
Nick Harris transferred to La Salle at the beginning of the season, but easily jumped up to the team's 3rd singles spot, becoming a fixture in the lineup. Nick won a crucial match during the PCL Final to help lead La Salle to its 11th straight PCL Championship!
Rob Denny (right) squares up for a backhand hit during match play. Rob provided consistency in every match in his second season with the team. Rob was excited to get his 2nd straight PCL title and can't wait to compete for a third during his senior year!

As a part of the backbone of the team, Matt was excited to join the varsity team this season, fulfilling his goal to win a PCL Championship!

PADDLE TIL IT HURTS La Salle Crew experienced another successful season, earning the program widespread recognition as one of the premier scholastic rowing teams in Philadelphia and nationwide. Fall201 6 marked the return of La Salle to the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston where the Varsity 8+ earned an automatic bid, ensuring La Salle's return to the Charles in 2017. In the Fall Season, the Varsity 8+ achieved a first-place victory at the Navy Day Regatta. The Fall Season served as the foundation for what would be expected of the program in the more competitive Spring Racing Season. After many months of indoor training, La Salle Crew returned to the Schuylkill River in Spring 2017. The far-reaching depth and strength showcased by the team throughout the Spring Season allowed La Salle Crew to be recognized as a program capable of competing successfully at every level and in all categories. La Salle boats finished strong at the Philadelphia City Championships with 1st place finishes in the 2nd Varsity 8+ and Novice 8+, 2nd place finishes in the Varsity 8+, Varsity Lightweight 8+, and Freshman 8+, and a 3rd place finish in the Freshman 4+. The 201 7 La Salle Volleyball Team represents a culmination of experience and skill. The most important moment of the year occurred before the season even began. For the first time, the majority of our starting lineup played club or got some other form of practice in the off season. With Patrick Guinosso and Mathew Donofrio outside, Jake Glah and Chris Metzler at setter, Chase Kensil at opposite, Anders Skjeveland and Austin Weathers, Kyle Natter at Libero, and Thomas Steinburg at DS, there was little the team couldn't do.
Left: Chris Metzler begins to set middle hitter Austin Weathers.
Looking ahead, the key game this year is between La Salle and Lansdale Catholic as we volley for the top spot. With PCLs right around the corner, it is important not to get cocky and complacent because nothing will be given for free , but everything will be taken if we do not perform at our highest standard. This is the last year for many of our players and nothing less than a PCL Championship is desired by these semors. - Patrick Guinosso

ALWAYS IN THE PRESENCE Of GOD
••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Here at La Salle, we cherish the wonderful opportunity to celebrate Mass and other prayer services as a community. We are able to have excellent priests throughout the Archdiocese come to celebrate the Masses. Students perform the readings and some even lead the prayer services. The student music program performs selections that enhance the beauty of the Masses. Through the students' participation, and through the whole school gathering together to celebrate Mass, we remember the importance of community, which is one of the main elements of Lasallian spirituality. Masses and student liturgies are a core part of our identity as a Catholic school and have come to be a cherished part of La Salle's community. It is a time when students can take a pause in their day-to-day activities and experience the truth of our presence in God. These Masses build the faith of the whole community and let us remember our unity in Christ. - Tom Cipolla

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• The 2017 National Honors Society Blood Drive was organized and run this year by NHS officers Patrick Tatlonghari, Nick Torres, Dave Kennedy, and Liam Kelly along with moderators Ms. Shustack and Mrs. Field. A week prior to March 9th, NHS members recruited students from the sophomore, junior, and senior classes to give up a free period to partake in this life-saving initiative. On the day of the drive students, faculty, and other members of the La Salle family came out to donate blood. From 8:00am to 1:00pm, NHS members were checking in donors while the dedicated team from the Red Cross collected the donations. NHS members were also on call to help fatigued students lay down and get a snack. While some first time donors were a bit squeamish at first, they overcame their fear and helped save a life. The day was an all around success and could not have been done without the dedicated officers and the generous donors. - Patrick Tatlonghari

TO FACE
The Poor Man's Supper is a fundraiser run by Mrs. Miller. Each year she elects a student leader to organize the event. The student leader is tasked with the responsibility of contacting donors and recruiting the help of La Salle students to volunteer with the dinner. As this year's student leader, this was a really eye opening experience for me. This was the first time I was really put into a leadership position at La Salle. At first I was nervous and worried about whether or not the event would be a success, but in the end, with the help of the La Salle community, we were able to raise $2,000 for Face to Face, a nonprofit organization in the Germantown area that helps the less fortunate. It was amazing to see how items as simple as a ceramic bowl, soup, and a loaf of bread were able to benefit struggling families, individuals, and the homeless. -Jovan Berry

• ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
• •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• The Men of La Salle's mission is to bring sons together with their fathers or guardians in service and in fellowship . In addition to rewarding service opportunities, there are numerous social events throughout the year which help to support a critical part of our mission - for more than seventy years, the Men of La Salle have made a commitment that no student will ever have to leave La Salle due to the death of a primary wage earning parent. Every year, several young men benefit from that commitment, from the generosity and the work of the Men of La Salle.
All mothers or legal guardians of La Salle students are members of the Mothers' Club and are warmly invited to get involved by attending or volunteering at our events - it's a great way to meet and socialize with other moms in our school community and to make lasting memories.

SERVICE
••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• •• ••••••••••••••••• •••••••• • ••••• • ••• • ••• The Summer Service trip to Bolivia was an experience which had a profound effect on and benefitted many people, both Bolivians and Americans, in a variety of ways. Both the students and chaperones had the opportunity to participate in the truly fascinating and unique culture of Bolivia. With the guidance of Senora Breen, we met new people of all ages, from babies to the elderly. We painted schools, taught classes, handed out food and clothes, and ate with the native people. Most potently in my memory, we traveled together, not as students and chaperones, but as friends; we all got to know each other, we bonded, and we grew to take care of each other. We helped each other with work, ventured through the market to negotiate prices together, shared snacks that we had bought in the market, ate together every day, and of course, made sure that everybody was aware of Senora's schedule. This trip was an experience that I learned a great deal from and thoroughly savored, and I will take it with me and cherish it for the rest of my life. From the long plane ride, to speaking with native speakers, to eating new foods, to something as simple as living in a hotel with a classmate whom I had barely known but would grow to look out for as a brother, every experience from this trip was, and is, very valuable. - Michael Capaldi

No other event is more anticipated in high school than Senior Prom, and it's safe to say it lived up to the hype. The Senior Prom was a load of fun for all 243 of the seniors and their dates. The night was full of dancing, eating, and sweating in the beautiful venue of Spring Mill Manor. With lovely decor, fine dining, and great music, Spring Mill was the perfect place for all the lads to have the time of their lives. The food was exquisite, especially the ice cream, and the bar outside the dancing room was the perfect rest stop to cool off and get some water before heading back into the mob to dance and sweat until our cummerbunds fell off and our tux shirts had stains. There was such a good atmosphere between the seniors, and everyone laughed and bonded as the long night went on. It's safe to say that the Senior Prom was one of the greatest weekends of my life, and I'm so happy that all the lads in the senior class had such a ball while looking sharp. - Cristian DeSimone

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• It seems almost surreal that four years at La Salle have come and gone so quickly and that graduation is already upon us. It seems as though just a couple of months ago our parents were dropping us shy freshman off at the door for our first day of class. While we are all extremely excited to move on to the next chapter of our lives, I feel as though each of us are also leaving with heavy hearts as La Salle has become such a special part of our lives over the past four years. Our class has come a long way since the first time we stepped on campus and I feel as though all 287 of us have truly become brothers throughout our time here. While saying goodbye is never easy, Graduation is a time for us to reflect fondly on the great things we have experienced and accomplished, but also look forward to a great future. The bonds we have formed and the lessons we have learned are going to last throughout our lifetimes. Though on May 24th we are exiting La Salle for the final time as students, our graduation does not mark the end. We now have not only the tools to succeed, but incredible experiences, memories, and friendships that will last throughout our lives. -Forrest Kerr
