Our rich history…

Established in 1858, La Salle College High School began at Saint Michael Parish at Second and

Jefferson Streets in Philadelphia. Initially known as the “Select School,” it eventually took the name “Christian Brothers Academy.” In 1863, the school became the college preparatory division of La Salle College.

In 1867, La Salle moved to Juniper and Filbert Streets. In 1882, the Christian Brothers acquired the mansion of Michael Bouvier – a prominent Philadelphia banker – located on Broad Street near Girard Avenue. In 1929, La Salle opened a new campus in Belfield in the Wister Woods section of Philadelphia. Until 1960 La Salle College and La Salle College High School shared the same campus.

IN THE EVER-CHANGING WORLD OF TECHNOLOGY, A DYNAMIC APPROACH TO TEACHING TECH IS PARAMOUNT. “La Salle offered me the perfect environment to test new technologies and discover the endless ways technology has the potential to change our lives. Visits from Microsoft and Cisco experts gave me a glimpse in to how the most advanced systems in the world function. More importantly, La Salle showed me how these possibilities can become realities in our community. I was able to use the expertise I gained as a Student Lab Manager at various service projects where La Salle students deployed entire computer labs to schools and non-profits in Philadelphia. Nothing has been as rewarding as seeing my skills help people in their everyday lives.”

“My years at La Salle completely reshaped my future from what I originally thought it would be when I was a freshman. In the Music Department, the teachers have created such a special environment that provides each student with every opportunity to succeed, something that seems to be uniquely Lasallian. This environment has not only developed my skills as a musician, but also my confidence and my drive. My experiences at La Salle have pushed me to pursue music in college, something I never thought I could do, but now something I’m so excited for.”

The school’s nickname and mascot, The Explorers, was erroneously bestowed by a sports writer in 1931 who was covering a basketball game at La Salle College, which was also the home of La Salle College High School. He thought that the school was named after the French explorer, René-Robert Cavelier Sieur de La Salle, and not Saint John Baptist de La Salle. Despite his error, the nickname remained and La Salle College High School and La Salle University are the only schools in America to use the Explorer as their mascot.

“An incoming freshman should look forward to the plethora of activities that will be offered to him. Get as involved as possible, as every niche is catered to at La Salle. The amount of options may at first seem overwhelming, but realize that you have four years to nurture whatever talent you wish to develop. I also suggest becoming a part of the best music program in the area, and to get to know as many people as possible. Don’t let your first year pass by without trying something new. Ask questions, make a friend, and get out of your comfort zone!“
