December 2009 Volume Nineteen Number 4

Dear Parents and Guardians, Let me begin by thanking so many for your tremendous support of our recent Auction. I can assure you that our theme - “The Golden Age of TV – A Really Big Show”, still provides us with many memories and moments of joy as we created and carried out this theme. All the members of our 27th Auction planning committees join in thanking you for your tremendous support. December is ushered in on the heels of our national day of Thanksgiving. Too often, we forget the significance of these days before Christmas. They are meant to invite us to quiet ourselves and allow for the opportunity of enjoying the stillness of night. Too often, our lives are busy rushing about to prepare our homes for the holiday season and we might forget the holyday that gives birth to the” Reason for this Season”. Believe it or not, Christmas is a season that extends well into mid-January. The Christmas season does not end with the last carol of Christmas Day. Join me in trying to find that quiet time that allows for Christmas’s true meaning to enter our hearts. I wish you and yours a Merry Christmas and Blessings through the New Year. With the fall sports season now behind us, I congratulate our fans who once again conducted themselves in a most positive spirit – cheering for our teams but wishing our opponents well. The results of the tremendous effort on the part of both our teams and their coaches are attested too in this record: Football

Philadelphia Catholic League and District 12 Champions

Cross Country Philadelphia Catholic League and District 12 Champions 3rd Place Finish in the PIAA State Championship Golf

Philadelphia Catholic League Champions

Water Polo

7th Place Finish in the PIAA State Championship

Soccer

2nd place finish in the Philadelphia Catholic League and a regional ranking before a lose to Ryan in playoffs

Congratulations to the Junior Class who will be honored with class rings. Thanks to the members of the Mothers Club who will host a post event social for the boys and their special guests. The listing of December happenings around campus is inspiring – Senior Class Tree Trimming, Junior Ring Liturgy, Entrance/ Scholarship Exam, Mothers’ Club Christmas Shopping Spectacular, Board of Trustee Meeting, President’s Reception for Benefactors, Christmas Concerts, and Secret Santa and Operation Santa Claus efforts for seriously ill and underprivileged children (a combined effort of our parents, alums, and current students ). Interest in our recently published Sesquicentennial History is high. Special anniversary books are available through our bookstore for holiday gift giving. You may reserve a book for $75 by contacting the bookstore or though our website. May you and yours enjoy the blessedness of Christmas and the promise of a Happy and Healthy New Year. Sincerely yours,

Brother Richard Kestler, FSC ’60 President

Merry Christmas!

Office of the Principal Joseph L. Marchese Principal

Dear Parents and Guardians, With the Advent season upon us, La Salle is “beginning to look a lot like Christmas”. Christmas wreaths, Nativity scenes, and the Christmas tree in the Main Office all point to that wondrous day when Our Lord became Man. Let us remind ourselves to take time away from the hustle and bustle of holiday shopping to focus on Advent – the coming of our Lord, Jesus Christ. La Salle had a fantastic Open House last month with over 525 families making the trip to our campus. It is wonderful to know that the excitement around La Salle is generating such great interest in our school. The 2009 La Salle College High School Entrance Examination will be administered on Saturday, December 5, 8:30 am. If you know of any good candidates for our freshman class, please encourage them to sign up by calling La Salle and asking for the Admissions Office. Word of mouth is quite often the best recruitment tool, so please don’t hesitate to enthusiastically endorse La Salle with your friends, family, colleagues, etc. Special thanks to all of our fall sports teams for another tremendous season. In addition to our Philadelphia Catholic League Championship in Golf, our Cross Country Team notched their seventh consecutive championship, our first District 12 Championship of the year, and finished in third place at the PIAA State Championships! Congratulations to all of our cross country coaches and their runners for another great year. Water Polo had another outstanding season finishing seventh in the state and our Soccer Team played in the semifinals, losing a very tough game to Archbishop Ryan. Our Football Team concluded the fall season by defeating St. Joseph’s Prep in the Philadelphia Catholic League Championship and then defeating George Washington to win the PIAA District 12 Championship. They now move on as one of eight teams vying for the Pennsylvania State Championship in football. If you would like to get into the Christmas spirit, please make a point to join us for La Salle’s two wonderful Christmas concerts. Our Band Christmas Concert will take place in the school auditorium on Monday, December 14, 2009 at 7:15 pm. Then, you can join us the very next week for our Chorus Christmas Concert on Monday, December 21, 2009 at 7:30 pm. If you have not yet had a chance to hear the near-professional quality of La Salle’s Music Program, these are two “can’t miss” events. In closing, I wish you and your family a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year. The celebration of the birth of the baby Jesus reminds us that Our Lord lives among us. Our challenge is to find him in all that surrounds us. His presence is certainly palpable here at La Salle College High School. Merry Christmas! Sincerely yours,

Joseph L. Marchese Principal

Office of Academic Affairs Thomas R. Barna Assistant Principal for Academic Affairs

Academic Support Resources Now that the Second Marking Period begun, it is appropriate to remind students and their families of the support services that are available for all La Salle students. Please keep in mind that a poor performance (grade) is typically the result of falling short in the areas of ability and/or effort. Allow me to share a personal experience that highlights the importance of serious daily study. With the Class of 2014 admissions process in full-swing, La Salle has been blessed with countless 8th grade student visitors spending a day on campus. Part of a visit includes a 15-minute personal interview with an administrator. It is a wonderful opportunity for us to get to know future prospective students. Not surprisingly, these young men typically make a very nice first impression. However, the one concern that surfaces repeatedly pertains to a part of the conversation where La Salle’s homework recommendation is discussed. The suggestion of spending 20-minutes per night per subject (a rather conservative estimate) shocks many 8th grade students. Now that academic habits are being rooted, it is a good time to remind students of the academic commitment expected outside of the classroom. Please encourage and nurture your son to follow-through on spending significant quality time (quite and away from distractions) on his studies daily. If your son is struggling or frustrated in a specific area, please encourage him to meet with his classroom teacher. When experiencing difficulty in any course, a student’s first response should always be to see his teacher for help. One outcome may include the development of a routine tutoring arrangement with the instructor. A student’s grade-level counselor can also help in developing a plan of action if a student’s academic struggles are pervasive or if his comfort level with the situation is less than ideal. Know that outside of his classroom teacher, additional academic support services are available. La Salle’s chapter of the National Honor Society coordinates a peer tutoring program that provides students with student-to-student help on many levels in several areas. When possible, help is arranged during the school day. NHS tutoring is coordinated by Ms. Tina Shustack and Brother William DiPasquale. Furthermore, La Salle has the benefit of running a Math Resource Room, Writing Center, and

World Language Resource Center to help students in these targeted areas. They are open throughout the school day and staffed by our own teachers (whenever available). Our records indicate that hundreds of students take advantage of these resources annually. In addition to the services listed above, families may benefit knowing that La Salle’s McShain Library is opened Monday through Thursday, 7:30 am to 5:00 pm, and Fridays between 7:30 am and 3:30 pm. Our Main Computer Labs, located in the basement of St. Michael’s Hall, are tentatively open daily until 4:00 pm and 3:00 pm on Fridays.

Important Dates La Salle’s Christmas recess begins at the end of school on Tuesday, December 22, 2009. Classes resume on Monday, January 4, 2010. The first semester ends at the end of the day on Friday, January 15, 2010. First semester exams begin following the Martin Luther King holiday weekend. Midterms will start on Monday, January 19, 2010 and end on Monday, January 25, 2010. There are no classes scheduled for Monday, January 18, 2010. The second semester begins on Tuesday, January 26th with an “A” day schedule. New schedules for the second semester will be issued to all students in homeroom on that day. Please note: freshmen who had gym in semester one, will have pool (aquatics) in semester two; students who had pool in semester one, will have gym in semester two.

Semester Examinations and Schedule As identified on the school calendar, examinations for the first semester will be given primarily during the week of January 19, 2010 to January 22, 2010. This year they will spill over into the following Monday, January 25, 2010. The midterm exam schedule, although not developed for this submission, will be posted at the end of the first week of January both in school and on the website under the Academic Life tab. Although it may seem early, please encourage your son to begin preparing for exams as soon as possible.

Attendance Reminder

Winter SAT Courses

With cold and flu season already here there may be days when your son in unable to attend school. La Salle understands this. Please remember an excused absence is one that is due to illness or family emergency. If your son is absent he should be proactive. Contacting a reliable classmate the night of the absence and/or communicating with the teacher at the earliest convenient time is expected as absent students are responsible for missed work.

For the ninth year in a row La Salle is offering classes to prepare for the SAT that will be administered on March 13, 2010. Under the direction of Mr. Dennis Bloh of the English Department and a consultant for the College Board, the series of six (6) classes and two practice tests will be held on Saturday mornings from 8:30 am until noon. There will be three different components of the class: Math, Verbal and Writing. The schedule will be as follows:

On a related note, it is important to clarify that outside of illness or emergency, school attendance is compulsory. A family vacation does not qualify as an excused absence. School holidays and breaks are published well in advance so as to offer parents an opportunity to plan their vacations at a time that does not interfere with attendance policies. Families and their sons cannot expect teachers to accommodate missed work/opportunities for any unexcused absence. Unexcused absences during midterm or final examinations are strictly prohibited. Please keep in mind that attendance throughout the school year is vital to a student’s academic success. There is no doubt that the correlation between absences and grades is extraordinary. As a rule of thumb, students who miss school have grades that reflect their gaps in learning. Please support our efforts to have your son in school daily and on time. Remember, the school’s main number should NOT be used to report any student absence. All attendance matters are expected to be reported to the Attendance Line at (215) 402-4140 before 8:00 am. A note is required upon returning to school.

SAT Information Attention juniors, the SAT will be offered nationally on January 23, 2010. Spring SAT dates include March 13, 2010, May 1, 2010, and June 5, 2010 (for details check out www.collegeboard.com or “links and resources” at www.lschs.org/college).

Men of Service

Elder Share by Matt McGlynn ’10

Last year a new service program called Elder Share joined the Lasallian Service Corps. The mission of Elder Share is to bring Lasallian service to yet another important part of the community – the elderly. The intended purpose of Elder Share is to provide companionship to senior citizens of two retirement facilities, St. Joseph’s Villa and Artman Home. While it may sound simple, becoming friends with the senior citizens at Artman Home and the Villa is far more challenging than I ever imagined. There are physical barriers such as hearing, vision and memory loss and also mental barriers that often prove challenging as well. Many of the seniors are often antagonistic and upset that they are living in a nursing home. It is our job to overcome these feelings with the seniors and help them realize that there is still much to live for in their lives. Once these mental and physical barriers are overcome, socializing with the residents can be incredibly rewarding. Several weeks into the first year of Elder Share, the effort many of us had put into bonding and connecting with the senior citizens had finally begun to pay off. The students, moderators, and elderly had begun to open up and allow the experience to fully take hold. Our presence finally seemed to mean something to the senior citizens, many of whom have little to no family or friends outside of their retirement facilities. Now, over a year after our first visit, I can happily say that all of us have bonded with the seniors at both the Artman Home and Saint Joseph’s Villa. Whether we are playing Jingo, a combination of bingo and trivia that is a favorite at St. Joseph’s Villa, or bowling, a favorite of the folks at Artman Home, there is never a dull moment at Elder Share.

The time we spend with the senior citizens at Artman Home and St. Joseph’s Villa may seem simple to us, but the hours we dedicate to socializing with the seniors is often a highlight of their week. The excitement on the faces of many of the men and women at both Artman Home and St. Joseph’s Villa makes all of the challenges worthwhile. Many of the students involved at Elder Share have bonded with individual seniors, helping and talking to the same senior every week we visit. The hope and sense of optimism that has grown among the seniors is a reward within itself. Walking into either retirement facility every week not only makes the seniors happy, but rewards us as well. The seniors at both the Artman Home and the Villa have taught me much about my own life and spirituality and have given me countless pieces of advice. We have all learned much about our own history in America, looking at it through the eyes of men and women who experienced historical events firsthand. It is truly an inspiring experience to converse with those who lived through the Holocaust in Europe, fought in World War II, and traveled the world. The elderly are eager to share their knowledge and experiences, and it is up to us to take advantage of this opportunity. Elder Share has been an enriching program for all those involved. Our relationships with the senior citizens at the Artman Home and St. Joseph’s Villa have truly been give and take. They have learned just as much from us as we have from them, and I certainly hope that we all have much more to learn.

Financial Aid

Additions to List of Colleges

Information about financial aid – forms to be completed, deadlines, loans, etc. – can be found at our website: www. lschs.org/college in the “Links and Resources” section on the left hand side. Scroll down and click on the “Paying for College” link. Check out www.fafsa.ed.gov, www.finaid. org, www.collegeboard.com, www.educationplanner.com, www.pheaa.org, and www.aessuccess.org.

Seniors are reminded to inform the College Counseling Center by Tuesday, December 1, 2009 about any colleges they are adding to their original list. The counselors need time for processing these requests before the Christmas holidays. The College Counseling Center will be closed for the holidays from December 23, 2009 to January 4, 2010.

Be aware of the financial aid forms needed for each college since each college has its own requirements and deadlines. The possibilities are the FAFSA, the CSS PROFILE, and the college’s own financial aid form. Be aware of deadlines for these application forms. Given the increasing cost of a college education and the current economy, we urge students and their parents to be diligent about filing the forms in a complete and timely manner and to take advantage of every scholarship opportunity. An estimate of family eligibility for federal student aid can be determined by visiting www.fafsa4caster.com. Information about scholarships that come to the College Counseling Center is posted on www.lschs.org/college under “Scholarship Information” in the “Paying for College” section. Seniors applying for scholarships from a college or university often need to meet an early deadline. Take note of the specific requirements. The following are scholarship search sites: www.fastweb.com, www. brokescholar.com, and www.finaid.com. The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) cannot be filed until January 1, 2010. However, students and parents should apply for Personal Identification Numbers (PINS) before beginning the process at www. fafsa.ed.gov. This four-digit number will serve as your electronic signature and it also can be used whenever corrections need to be made to the FAFSA. The number remains the same throughout the student’s college years and should be kept in a secure place.

Copies of letters of acceptance and scholarship awards should be brought to the College Counseling Center.

Important Reminder for Juniors and Seniors Keep in mind as you are preparing for semester exams that your GPA in college preparatory courses is the most important criteria in the college admission process. Keep up the good work!!

Juniors The college counselors suggest that the juniors make plans to take standardized tests in second semester. Check out the newly added “test preparation” module on Naviance. SAT and ACT sample tests and preparation packets are available. Juniors should have taken two of the same test – either SAT or ACT – by the end of second semester junior year. A complete schedule of tests and registration deadlines is available at our website, www. lschs.org/college, www.collegeboard.com (SAT), and www. actstudent.org (ACT). Advisory classes for juniors regarding the college search and application process will begin second semester. Check out our website for comprehensive information, including the advisory class syllabus and the La Salle College High School College Counseling Handbook.

Men of Faith

Freshmen Retreat: Reflecting on Our Lasallian Identity by George Uhrich ’13

Recently, I participated in my first retreat at La Salle College High School. I will admit that going into it, I was skeptical. My day started off with a liturgy in which we prayed and reflected on our lives. In addition, Father Janton took the time to explain the various parts of the mass. Next, we went downstairs and watched a power point presentation of all the ministry and service opportunities at La Salle. After watching it, I was really surprised at all of the things that La Salle does for communities all over the world. We also talked about our Lasallian identity through brotherhood and respect. This challenged me to think about who I am and what my identity is. After we watched the power point, a senior at LaSalle came to talk to us about his experiences at LaSalle. I could relate to much of what he talked about during his talk. He said that going to LaSalle has been the best decision he’s ever made – despite some setbacks. After that, we went to the chapel to have a talk with Mr. Fyke. On the walk upstairs I was scared out of my mind because we were meeting with the dean, but it wasn’t bad at all. Mr. Fyke actually made me laugh! He talked about what it means to be a man and that was really enlightening. He said being a man isn’t just knowing what’s right; rather, it’s doing what’s right. After lunch, we started an activity where we needed to build a bridge out of newspaper. The bridge had to support the weight of a brick for five seconds and needed to be large enough to fit a box underneath it. At first it sounded easy but then the two seniors leading the exercise told us we couldn’t talk. The exercise forced us to deal with adversity while trying to find the solution to a problem, in this case building a bridge. It was a really fun exercise. We had to think and interact with others as well so it was also a great way to get to know our classmates. Unfortunately, my group didn’t win but there were definitely groups that were worse off than us. At the end of the exercise, the seniors explained that we would be working together and building community during our time at La Salle. Next, we went up to the chapel again and were split into groups. We were asked to fill out a sheet about our impressions of La Salle and our relationships with friends, family, and God. Our groups were assigned to go to different places. My group was assigned to meet in the Campus Ministry Office. When we got there, we discussed what we wrote down on our sheet. It was really nice to be able to connect with the other students and even a teacher. During the retreat, we really got a chance to interact and open up to the teachers outside of the classroom. It gave us a chance to see another side of them. To finish off the day, we went back to the chapel and filled out another sheet. This sheet was about how we wanted our relationships with family, friends, school and God to be after our freshman and sophomore years and at the end of our four years at La Salle. I thought this was a great experience because it gave us all an opportunity to think about some things that we don’t usually think about. It also opened my eyes to many of the service projects that La Salle does and how I might be able to discover my Lasallian identity.

Really listen when you ask your son about school.

Talk to your son about the dangers of drinking alcohol.

A strong relationship with your son begins with good communication. Yet many boys hesitate to bring problems or concerns to their parents. When boys do decide to talk to their parents, parents often respond one of two ways – they either over-listen or under-listen.

“I just had one beer,” your son tells you after you find out there was alcohol at the party.

When you: 1. Over-listen, you’re paying attention – to your own reactions. Before your son even gets the whole problem out of his mouth, you’re jumping to the rescue with solutions and ideas. Or you’re questioning every bit of his story without letting him finish. 2. Under-listen, you’re discounting what your son has to say. Instead of your undivided attention, your son is getting the bit of your attention left over after you pay the bills, set the table and start to cook dinner. After a while, your son is likely to stop offering information or he may start picking fights, claiming you “never listen” and “don’t really know him at all.” Either way, you’re not really listen-ing to your son. If you’re an over-listener, take a step back and let your son finish a story. You may find out that he wasn’t asking for advice after all – he was telling you about how he solved a problem on his own. If you’re an under-listener, take a step forward. All those other tasks can wait five minutes while you focus on your son and the five minutes you spent with your son will show him that you think he’s important and you care about his opinions. “There’s nothing wrong with drinking one beer.” Actually, there is. A study in Australia followed teenagers for more than ten years. The study found that even lowlevel drinking during the teenage years increased risks later on. For boys, the research was clear. The more boys drank in their teen years, the more likely they were to develop alcohol-related problems as young adults. For girls, the link was not quite as strong. However, the study concluded that there was no “safe” level of alcohol for either boys or girls during their teen years. The lead researcher, Elya Moore, summed up the findings this way: “We found no evidence of a level (of drinking during the teen years) that may have been safe. I think that’s the most remarkable finding.” Use this study as a springboard for a serious discussion with your teen about drinking. Teens develop important social, technical skills on the Internet. Teens spend a lot of time on the computer. They chat with friends, look at Facebook and check email. But is all this online activity good for your son? Whatever happened to hanging out with friends in person? The results from a recent study on teens and the Internet might shock you: Teens are developing important social and technical skills online. It’s easy to see the “technical skills.” Your son is probably the most computer-savvy member of your family – and by far the fastest typer; however, the “social skills” are harder for many parents to understand. Teens’ “social networks” are vastly different from years ago. Friendships used to be defined by location (who ever lived nearby was a good candidate for friendship) and privacy (reading a diary was the worst breach of trust that could be committed). Now, thanks to the Internet, teens are friends with kids from around the world – and are broadcasting their secrets to anyone who wants to read them. In fact, learning how to manage the visibility of what they post online is one of the most important social skills today’s teens have. That said, it’s still important to monitor your teen’s computer usage – both the time spent online and the websites viewed. And as always, make sure schoolwork comes first. Help your son make the right decision in a difficult moment. Sometimes, it’s easy to “do the right thing.” If everyone is driving safely down a road, there’s less temptation for someone to speed. But there are other, harder times when it’s not so easy to do the right thing. The teacher leaves the room for just a second during a test. Does your son text the answer to a question to his friend across the room? It’s those hard times when it’s even more important for your teen to be prepared to do the right thing. Sometimes, these may seem like small choices. Should he get up when the alarm clock beeps or roll over and miss first period? But even these choices have very big consequences. If he misses class today, it will be that much harder to catch up tomorrow.

Talk with your son about these “hard moments.” Let him know that everyone has to make choices. Often, by taking the choice that seems harder at the time (getting up and going to school), he will actually have an easier time in the future. Keep your son on a schedule over the winter break. It’s winter break. Your son is looking forward to at least a week off from school. He’s thinking about sleeping late, staying up late and generally doing nothing. However, both you and his teachers are thinking a little bit further ahead – midterm exams scheduled in January. And spring is fast approaching, which means college application deadlines are closing in. Support your son by keeping him on a schedule over the holiday. Encourage your son to: • Work. Ask him to do a little bit of schoolwork or reading every day. He likely has homework he should be doing, but if not, it will benefit him to pick up a book. • Wake up. Don’t let him sleep in more than an hour past his normal wake-up time. He’ll be less groggy in those early-morning classes when school begins again – for which both he and his teachers will thank you. • Write. Enlist your teen in writing and addressing holiday cards or thank-you notes. He might even consider writing holiday cards to his teachers thanking them for their help so far this year. • Create. Keep your teen’s mind going. Ask him to help you in the kitchen--that’s a great place to practice science and math. Upcoming Calendar of Events Thursday December 10, 2009 Thursday, January 7, 2010

Monthly Meeting 6:30 pm Open to All Fathers Monthly Meeting 6:30 pm Open to All Fathers

Please note our December meeting is on the second Thursday.

Golf Outing Over seventy golfers enjoyed a day of competition, camaraderie, and nice weather at the 2009 Men of La Salle Golf Outing in late October at Center Square Golf Club. The event raised nearly $5,000 for the Men of La Salle. Signature sponsors for the event included: Digital Imaging Group, ACI, Lansdale Eye Associates and Laser Center, Accord Mechanical and Management Services, and Timothy Corcoran, CPA. Tee sign sponsors included; Acorn Medical Management, CYMA Builders and Construction, Lagreca and Quinn Real Estate Services, The Foley Insurance Agency, Dunphy Ford, Malvern Retreat House, Monarch Construction, Cigars Unlimited, Fast Signs of Marlton, Joseph and Donna Ferrier, the Obermeirs, Young, Criswell, Hoffman and Greco families. Special thanks to the outing coordinators and those that donated time and efforts to make the event successful, including Tim Corcoran, Tim Foley, Joe Karoly and Steve Young.

La Salle Auction The evening of November 7, 2009 greeted attendees with a spectacular school as well as a transformed auditorium and gym for the evening festivities. As all the numbers have not yet been compiled, suffice it to say the event was an incredible success. The event was sold out thanks to everyone registering online well in advance. Congratulations to Karen Guerra and Joe Karoly in a combined effort to raise funds for so many improvements to LaSalle. From the kick-off meeting in May to the culmination in November, they rallied literally hundreds of volunteers putting in thousands of hours for one spectacular evening. There are dozens of people to thank including all the fathers who helped move, decorate, setup, tear down, and work during the auction. It is your time and volunteerism that makes the event so special. Thank You to all who helped and in one way or another contributed to the success of the evening!

Saint Vincent’s Soup Kitchen Every weekend through the end of the school year, the Men of La Salle will continue our service to those less fortunate in our community, by helping to prepare and serve meals at St. Vincent’s. The Soup Kitchen is located at 109 East Price Street in the Germantown section of Philadelphia. This is a great opportunity for fathers

and sons to spend some time together in service to the needy in our community while at the same time setting an example to be able to give back. We need volunteers to prepare food every Saturday and serve every Sunday between 9:30 to 11:30 am and 12:30 to 2:30 pm respectively. No experience is needed, just a desire to spend time together and help others. Please go online to sign up and help make a difference.

Open House Thanks to the volunteers who helped man the Men of La Salle table for the annual Open House. We had the opportunity to greet potential new fathers for the incoming class, let them know our mission statement, and give them the true La Salle feeling as no other school can! Attendance was better than expected as the weather cooperated, and all three sessions seemed very impressed with our school and facilities. Guests were treated to no less than four different bands as they toured the campus under the direction of student ambassadors, parent volunteers, and alumni.

Father/Son Banquet The banquet was sold out and a huge success. Fran Dunphy, the Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Temple University, was the guest speaker, and in usual LaSalle tradition, the evening was a memory maker for all attendees. As we enter this very special time of the year, I think it is so important to reflect for a moment on all those blessings we have received through out the year to allow us to have and be all that we are. There is no greater joy than being able to share all our successes with our sons and families. For those that have gone before us, know that they are also sharing in that same joy. In this Christmas season, let us not forget that it is not only our sons who enter to learn and leave to serve, but we as parents also. On behalf of the Men of La Salle, our dedicated board, and all who volunteer so much time to make La Salle so special, I would like to wish you and your family a very safe and Merry Christmas!

Bud McGann ‘83 President

Men of Respect

Hustle For Muscle by Jim Kelly ’10

The senior manager of La Salle’s football team, Brian Havard, suffers from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a form of MD for which there is no cure and limited treatment. Many have probably seen Brian on the sidelines in his red motorized scooter. He is also the manager for the basketball and lacrosse teams. Brian’s classmates have always been very supportive and inclusive and treat him as a teammate. On Wednesday, November 25, 2009, students and volunteers helped to raise money for those affected by Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy by taking part in the 4th Annual Hustle For Muscle, a 5K Run and One Mile Walk that benefits Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy (PPMD), which is the largest nonprofit organization in the country focused entirely on Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Its mission is to improve the treatment, quality of life, and long-term outlook for all individuals affected with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy through research, advocacy, education, and compassion. The race began at 1:30 pm at Valley Green in Fairmount Park (at the corners of Germantown and Northwestern Avenues – across from Chestnut Hill College). Since its inception in 2006, Hustle for Muscle has grown from a small, student-sponsored race into a community-backed event that has raises over $22,000 for PPMD. Over one hundred of Brian Havard’s classmates at La Salle took part in the run. In addition, the senior members of the championship football team joined Brian on the one mile walk. Brain used his motorized scooter for the walk along the bridal path and was accompanied the entire way by his “teammates”. Although the team had only week to prepare for the City Championship Game against Washington – a short week at that – the players and coaches felt that it was important to support Brian and shortened Wednesday’s practice to attend the race and walk with Brian.

Let The

Music Play

by Chris Dearolf ‘11

and Eric Stone ‘11

La Salle’s music program is regarded as one of the best in the Delaware Valley region. Our Competition Band consistently places among the greatest high school bands in the area, and our Pep Band is easily the largest and most impressive group playing at any high school football game. The members of the band are extremely devoted to playing at many different events and “gigs” for La Salle and never disappoint. While La Salle is already considered to have an utterly amazing music program, every year we seem to outdo ourselves. Early in the summer, as always, the Pep Band began practicing for the exciting upcoming season. Under the fantastic student direction of seniors Dean Ripley, Joseph Moroney, and Tim Plamondon, we worked hard and practiced every week so that we would sound better than ever at the first game of the year. Rain or shine, the Pep Band played and supported our amazing football team. The members of this band prove their love for and dedication to La Salle week after week. As the school year started, the bands immediately began practicing. Throughout the school day, there are bands constantly playing. This year, there are two freshman bands, a string ensemble, a guitar ensemble, the 4th period band, the 5th period band, and the 6th period band. Of these, the 5th period band is the most advanced group, and the 4th period band is made up mostly of 5th period band members. All of these bands are practicing challenging music and preparing for their concert on December 14, 2009, which will be spectacular, as always. Another unique aspect of the band program is the fact that our band plays many events and “gigs” for La Salle and other groups in need of musical accompaniment. We play at the La Sale (the auction), the Open House, and many different luncheons for various clubs or assemblies. Not many other high school bands would be trusted enough to play for such impressive audiences, but La Salle’s band is not like many other high school’s music programs. Members of these bands also make up three additional bands that practice after school: the Concert Band, the Competition Band, and the Lab Band. The Concert Band, as its name implies, plays only at the concerts. However, the Competition Band and the Lab Band play at multiple competitions throughout the year, while the Competition Band plays at more competitions. There were tryouts for these bands in September. The Competition Band began practicing in October, while the Lab Band began practicing in November. Both bands look forward to a promising competition season this year. Overall, La Salle has one of the most impressive music programs in the area. Under the brilliant direction of Mr. Joseph Vettori and Mr. Joseph Ciccimaro, our band has become a spectacular asset to La Salle. More important than the many honors and awards we receive throughout the year or the various events at which we play, La Salle’s music program never forgets its purpose: to serve its students. Being a part of this wonderful group of musicians is honestly one of the most fulfilling and greatest opportunities La Salle has to offer.
