Dear Parents and Guardians, While I sit here writing this letter, our students are taking their mid-term examinations. It is hard to believe that the first semester has come and gone! My hope is that your son had a productive and enjoyable semester and is ready for the “home stretch”. I know that you recently received a letter announcing the tuition for the 2010-2011 school year. This unusually high increase is representative of the fact that La Salle is not immune to the economic turbulence of the past eighteen months. La Salle’s endowment, like many American 401K’s, was significantly impacted by the worst downturn in the U.S. economy since the Great Depression. Despite these uncertain times, La Salle’s programs of excellence continued to enjoy remarkable successes and have established La Salle as the very best choice in private Catholic education in the Delaware Valley. Certainly the strong interest in our school on behalf of this year’s candidates for the Class of 2014 is a real blessing. That being said, steps needed to be taken at this time to insure that La Salle will remain a pre-eminent Catholic high school well into the future. Please understand that we know that our tuition is a stretch for many families and are committed to increasing our financial aid funds to meet an increase in demand. Please also understand that, despite tuition of $17,200, only 88% of the cost of instruction will be covered by tuition. The remaining 12% comes to us as a result of the generous gifts of alumni, parents, and benefactors. As always, providing our students with the very best programs and learning environment remains our highest priority. Thank you for the sacrifices you are making on behalf of your sons. You may remember that, in November of 2007, La Salle was re-accredited by the Middle States Association of America. That accreditation lasts for seven years and requires a mid-term review to insure that the action steps associated with our Middle States goals are progressing. I am pleased to announce that La Salle passed its mid-term review “with flying colors”. Special thanks go to Mr. Nick Coggins, Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment, for guiding us through the review process. Please make note of some important dates in February. Report cards will be issued in homeroom on Monday, February 1, 2010. The Mother/Son Communion Brunch, a truly wonderful event that will feature Sean McDermott ’93 of the Philadelphia Eagles as the guest speaker, will take place on Sunday, February 21, 2010 at 10:00 AM at Williamson’s. And, believe it or not, the “Senior 100 Day Celebration” will take place at La Salle on the evening of February 25, 2010. Thank you once again for entrusting your sons to our care. Sincerely yours,

Joseph L. Marchese Principal

Board of Trustees Benjamin J. Ventresca, Jr. ’70 Chairman

Dear Parents and Guardians, Last month, we announced the difficult news of the extraordinary tuition increase for the 2010-2011 Academic Year. The decision that led to the announcement was made in conjunction with across-the-board budget cuts and the implementation of additional cost-containment measures. We expected the news to be hard to accept, and understand the tremendous pressure that tuition increases place on many of our families. In anticipation, we have allocated additional funds for financial support of families with sons currently enrolled at La Salle for whom the incremental tuition presents an inordinate burden and financial aid has not been previously granted. Please speak with Mr. David Diehl or Brother Richard Kestler for more information. We truly appreciate the feedback that we have received, and the sincerity with which it was given. We thank you for your candidness and for sharing your concerns. While this was a hard decision, some of the feedback comments were reassuring and empathized with the school’s current situation. The financial downturn that affected the entire world from 2007 to 2009 is the principal reason for our current financial position. Moreover, we believe that the future of La Salle and the opportunity for young boys from a variety of economic and social backgrounds to discover their potential and become independent thinkers is brighter than ever. We believe that in order to give your sons the best Catholic secondary education, and an edge in applying to colleges, it is critical for La Salle to maintain its superior quality programs and educational environments. For this reason, Brother Richard and I plan to meet with parents and alumni at the scheduled February meetings of the Mothers’ Club, Men of La Salle, and La Salle Alumni Association. At these meetings, we will summarize the financial situation, present the rationale for the current tuition increase, and answer any questions you might have. As a Board, it is difficult to comfortably reconcile the contrasts of 2009’s achievements in academics and extracurriculars with the strain of the effects of our financial responsibilities and decisions. Many of our Trustees have been personally working through the effects of unparalleled uncertainties, replete with unplanned career changes, unexpected cuts in income, strained household budgets, and modified images of future plans and goals. Remarkably, the fundamental elements of managing a school that will cost $21 million to operate in 2010 are not drastically different from those of managing a household. While we understand your needs we are making difficult, but sound, decisions to change some of the fundamental financial policies that will determine our ability to continue the tremendous success of our school and to fulfill our Mission. We respect your investment in your sons’ spiritual and academic growth, and appreciate the sacrifice you make to send him here. With our new policies and your continued gift of a La Salle education for your sons, we are confident that, in its finest tradition, La Salle will continue to provide the best educational opportunity for your sons and for the generations that will follow. Sincerely,

Benjamin J. Ventresca, Jr. ’70 Chairman of the Board of Trustees ventrescab@lschs.org

Upperclass Registration and Course Selection

Overall, the registration and course selection process is described as follows:

Registration of current freshmen, sophomores, and juniors for the 2010-2011 school year will soon begin. This process traditionally takes place between late January and early April. Selecting courses over a period of several weeks has a number of benefits. Primarily, it will allow the student body to get personally involved in the selection process while exploring options related to their “wants and needs”. Current juniors will be the first to select their courses. Juniors begin the process during the middle of February in their Group Advisory class. Sophomore and freshmen students will follow in early March using the same means. Course selection for upperclassmen is expected to be completed before we break for the Easter holiday at the end of March.

Academic Affairs sends a letter to each family explaining the registration process and requesting the annual registration fee of $50. This year’s collection due date is Friday, January 29, 2010. This important deadline begins the process of allocating resources for our upcoming academic year.

Motivated by the spirit of “going green”, La Salle’s curricular guide will be used primarily in digital form. It should be noted that students have already been using this registration resource located on the school’s website and in the Naviance scheduling software. The updated Program of Studies for 2010-11 will be introduced in advisory classes. Students will be reintroduced to La Salle’s course requirements and the curricular options at this time. These class meetings will be followed by additional and more personal interactions with counselors, teachers, and students. Parental involvement has been, and will continue to be, an important part in the development and oversight of the course selection process. Eventually, parents can expect to “sign off” on the list of approved courses their sons have selected. As noted, the selection protocol presents each student with meaningful opportunities to discuss their personal curricular plan. This is intentional. If done properly, it will minimize surprises while producing predictable outcomes when schedules are received in late August. Finally, the pre-registration fee of $50 will be due on January 29, 2010.

Mr. Barna, Assistant Principal for Academic Affairs, addresses the student body through a WEXP broadcast in late January. This broadcast outlines La Salle’s registration procedures and timeline. Additionally, students are reminded of their registration fee obligation. Without the fee, the process does not move forward. Furthermore, it is assumed that students who do not pay their fee are not intending to return for the next academic year. Students review the updated Program of Studies with help from their counselors in Group Advisory classes. Additional guidance is received in this small group setting. The process is managed weekly by counselors through advisory class. During this “What can I take?”/”What should I take?” phase, students consult their parents, teachers, and counselors. Mr. Barna and Mr. Coggins visit all Group Advisory classes to provide additional information from an administrative perspective. Meanwhile, counselors, teachers, administrators, students, and parents continue to discuss options associated with course selection. Some students finish the process earlier than others. Completion depends on a variety of mitigating factors. One reason may include sorting out general, regular, and advanced placements. This naturally slows the process and is not viewed as a problem. By late March students and their parents are expected to review a “Course Selection Validation” form. A parent signature, approving the selected courses, finalizes the process. The selection process ends school wide on Wednesday, March 31, 2010. Students and/or parents have until April 16, 2010 to request changes by working through the appropriate teacher and/or counselor.

5 The Belcroft February 2010

Office of Academic Affairs (continued) During the months of April and May, resources are determined and secured for the new academic year. The office of Academic Affairs officially begins scheduling the courses requested at this time. The success of this labor-intensive process is directly related to the timeliness of meeting deadlines and completeness of information. Please encourage your son to take the entire process seriously. May, June, and July are not the time for students to reopen the course selection process. Students experiencing scheduling conflicts are contacted personally throughout the summer to resolve them. Once the school year begins there are NO course changes without compelling educational reasons such as a medical issue or diagnosed and documented learning difference. Changes made after the April 16, 2010 deadline are strongly discouraged and will require parental approval.

A Note Regarding Academic Honors The grade point averages of La Salle students are determined twice a year at the end of each semester. It is at these times when our Honors lists are compiled. Please be aware that semester exams have not been completed with the submission of this article. La Salle will continue to include its Honor Roll in publications like The Belcroft as soon as grade point averages are made available. Additionally, you should know that La Salle notifies each Honor student’s appropriate parish. Please recognize that La Salle has no control over how each parish responds to our request to publicize your son’s academic success.

Attendance Reminder With cold and flu season already here, there may be days when your son in unable to attend school. La Salle understands this. Please remember an excused absence is one that is due to illness or family emergency. If your son is absent he should be proactive. Contacting a reliable classmate the night of the absence and/or communicating with the teacher at the earliest convenient time is expected; absent students are responsible for missed work. On a related note, it is important to clarify that outside of illness or emergency, school attendance is compulsory. A family vacation does not qualify as an excused absence. School holidays and breaks are published well in advance so as to offer parents an opportunity to plan their vacations at a time that does not interfere with attendance policies. Families and their sons cannot expect teachers to accommodate missed work/opportunities for any unexcused absence. Unexcused absences during midterm or final examinations are strictly prohibited. Please keep in mind that attendance throughout the school year is vital to a student’s academic success. There is no doubt that the correlation between absences and grades is extraordinary. As a rule of thumb, students who miss school have grades that reflect their gaps in learning. Please support our efforts to have your son in school daily and on time. Remember, the school’s main number should NOT be used to report any student absence. All attendance matters are expected to be reported to the Attendance Line at (215) 402-4140 before 8:00 am. A note is required upon returning to school. Thank you for your help in this area.

JUST FOR SENIORS Scholarships and Grants There’s money out there. Our college website, www.lschs.org/college has links to numerous scholarship search sites as well as a variety of posted scholarship opportunities. Don’t miss out on opportunities for scholarships and grants. Financial Aid File financial aid forms. Be sure to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as possible. Many colleges have priority deadlines of February 1, 2010 or February 15, 2010. This application must be completed in order to apply for state, federal, and institutional financial aid and deadlines must be met. Before filling out the FAFSA, register for a PIN at www.pin.ed.gov. This will serve as your electronic signature. It is important to fill out the form completely and to estimate if necessary. It is better to meet the deadline and make changes later than to miss the deadline and potentially miss out on financial aid. You can file the FAFSA online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. We strongly encourage everyone to fill out the FAFSA. At the very least it will make your son eligible for several low interest loans such as the Federal Stafford Loan (www.staffordloan.com). If there are extenuating circumstances that a college financial aid officer at a college where your son has been admitted should know, do not hesitate to report these changes or circumstances to the colleges. Certain colleges may also require either their own institutional financial aid form or the College Scholarship Services (CSS) Profile (www.collegeboard.org/profile). Be aware of colleges’ requirements and meet the deadlines. Semester Grades Keep grades up. Admissions decisions are contingent on the successful completion of all course work. Admissions officers reserve the right to question poor second semester performance and, in some cases, to reverse an admissions decision that has already been made. We have examples of students whose grades dropped second semester resulting in their receiving letters from the college or university they planned to attend informing them their acceptance will now be re-considered. Award Letters and Offers of Acceptance Please return award letters. In March or April, your son should begin receiving merit and need based grant awards from the colleges to which he applied. After he compares award letters, he should pick which college he wants to attend and return the signed award letter to the chosen college. Pay close attention to deadlines for accepting the award package. Deadlines are usually within two weeks after receiving the award letter. If he misses a deadline, he may risk losing a scholarship, grant, or loan assistance.

Communicate with faculty and the College Counseling Department. Please encourage your son to thank the teachers who may have written letters of recommendation on his behalf. Please remember to bring copies of all college acceptance and scholarship letters to Mrs. O’Connell in the College Counseling Center. Please decline admission offers to other colleges. After he has chosen and committed to a college, your son should write a note declining admission to colleges where he has been accepted but will not be attending. This will allow students on a wait list to be accepted and awarded the aid previously held for your son. Deposit and Housing Applications Submit deposit and housing application. Once your son knows which college he wants to attend, he can submit a housing application and deposit if he will be living on campus. He needs to do this as soon as possible because most rooms are assigned on a first-come first-served basis. The National Reply Date is May 1, 2010. Do Not Double Deposit Each year some seniors have a difficult time making up their minds about which college to enroll in after they have been accepted. Students may NOT send deposits to more than one college on or after May 1st. This is called “double depositing” and is an unethical practice. Should the colleges involved determine that a student has “double deposited” your son’s admission may be jeopardized. This practice is unfair to other applicants. The “double depositor” is taking up a spot that could go to another student, who will instead be wait-listed or turned down. It is an acceptable practice to deposit at one college and maintain your name on a wait list at another. However, indicating to two colleges that you will be attending by sending deposits to both should not be considered. NCAA Clearinghouse Students who are planning to participate in Division I or II athletics in college must complete the NCAA Clearinghouse Eligibility form available online at www.ncaa.org and bring the release of transcript form to Mrs. O’Connell in the College Counseling Office. Transcripts will be sent to the NCAA upon receipt of the form and again after graduation. Search “Academics and Athletes” and “Information for College Bound Student-Athletes and Parents” on the NCAA site. NCAA requirements for eligibility are printed at this site and in our school calendar.

College Counseling Center (continued) JUST FOR JUNIORS

Building Bridges of Solidarity

Thank you to the parents of juniors who attended College Information Night in February. The college counselors appreciate your interest and support. If you have not yet done so, please send the release of academic information, college criteria, and parent’s input forms to the College Counseling Center as soon as possible.

Cochabamba, Bolivia Señora Lastenia Breen, a member of La Salle’s Spanish faculty, is asking for your generosity towards the people of Cochabamba, Bolivia. They are in need of usable clothing for all age groups, including newborns (no XL or bulky clothing). This past summer, nineteen La Salle students and three faculty members traveled to Cochabamba and distributed clothes and food donated by the La Salle families to children in hospitals, country-side schools, and the poor working class. They also helped to construct, paint, and cement rural schools.

A wealth of information is available on the Internet about the College Search process. A good starting site is our comprehensive webpage: www.lschs.org/college. In addition, each college and university has its own website. According to our current seniors and recent graduates, visiting college campuses is most important in making a good decision. It is most informative if the visits occur while students are on campus so we strongly encourage visits during this second semester. Parents who attended College Information Nights in February received a packet of information about questions to ask while on a college visit. This information is also available at www.NSSE.iub.edu. Students should send a follow-up email to the college admissions office after the visit. Information about making successful visits is also available in the College Match workbook that is required for Junior Advisory Class. Since many admission decisions will be based on the junior year GPA in college preparatory courses we suggest that students take their academic responsibilities most seriously. While participation in activities is a factor used to tip the scales in the admission process, primary focus is on the student’s GPA. For latest news regarding financial aid, check out the news articles listed under “College Links and Websites” on our webpage www.lschs.org/college. One example is “Financial doors can open for college applicants that plan ahead” from USA TODAY. Encourage your son to make an appointment with his college counselor. The LIGHTS Team The LIGHTS Team, a Student Assistance Program (SAP), assists La Salle students as well as the families of those students, who face behavioral and/or academic difficulties. The team is comprised of specially-trained school faculty and staff, who meet weekly to discuss the needs of referred students. The LIGHTS Team works to identify problems and seek out solutions. The LIGHTS Team does not diagnose or treat students. The LIGHTS team seeks out and collates information about referred students from a variety of sources, including parents, teachers, coaches, and the school nurse, and uses the information to determine suitable strategies for helping the students.

Families and LIGHTS: Partnership in Assistance The LIGHTS Team works together with the parents of academically or behaviorally troubled students. To that end, the LIGHTS Team contacts parents of referred students early in the process. In some cases, a student will require assistance which La Salle cannot provide. In these cases, the LIGHTS Team will work with parents to facilitate the process of accessing resources in the community.

Help Us Help Your Son The goal of LIGHTS is to help referred students overcome their academic and behavioral difficulties. Ideally, parents and LIGHTS work together toward this goal by offering mutual respect and support, open channels of communication, awareness of the student’s strengths, and shared responsibility.

Student Referrals A student may be referred to the LIGHTS Team in a number of ways. A faculty or staff member may express his or her concerns regarding a student’s academic performance or behavior to a member of the LIGHTS Team. A parent with similar concerns may refer his or her son to the LIGHTS Team. A friend or classmate who is worried about a certain student may refer him to the LIGHTS Team for assistance. A student may refer himself to the LIGHTS Team for assistance. All information about referred students is kept strictly confidential.

Encourage your son to remain aware and alert online.

Can you help your son deal with a tough teacher?

Your son likely has at least one social networking profile floating out there in cyberspace. You’ve told him not to post his real name, address, phone number, or any disgraceful pictures online.

Sooner or later, every student will encounter a tough teacher. Are you preparing your son for life after high school by helping him deal with this challenge? Answer yes or no to the questions below to find out:

But make sure your son also knows: • How to use the website’s privacy settings. Most social networking websites allow users to limit who is able to see their profiles. Some websites even have a “block” feature where users can restrict people from being able to contact them at all.

1. Have you reminded your son that throughout his life he will have to deal with people who are difficult?

• Not to answer messages or accept friend requests from strangers. Even if someone says he’s a friend of a friend, your son should not communicate with that person until he can verify his identity. • To tell you if someone he doesn’t know is constantly messaging him. You can report cyber harassment to the website administrator or to the police. Have your son keep a record of all messages and the dates they were sent. Reprinted with permission from the February 2010 issue of Parents Still Make The Difference! ® (High School Edition). Copyright © 2010 The Parent Institute ®, a Division of NIS, Inc.

2. Have you talked with your son about his goals for the class? If he wants to earn a good grade, he will need to work with the teacher. 3. Have you brainstormed with your son about things he can do to improve the relationship? 4. Have you explained to your son that the teacher’s attitude does not have to affect him? He is still a capable student who works hard. 5. Will you encourage your son to talk with his guidance counselor if the problem persists? How well are you doing? Each yes means you are helping your son learn how to handle life’s challenging people. For each no answer, try that idea in the quiz. Expectations are road maps for your son.

Do you know how to communicate without snooping?

Setting high expectations for your son is the only way to be certain she will succeed in school. Think of your expectations like a road map – without the map, there’s no guarantee your son will end up at the final destination (or even know what it is). With the map, he’ll be able to successfully find his way.

It can be hard to stay in touch with your son. He wants independence. You want to know what’s going on in his life.

To make sure your expectations for your son are clear: • Talk about future goals. Help your son make plans for the future and figure out how to make those plans a reality. • Discuss the link between effort and outcome. Assure your son that you are more concerned that he give his best effort than that he get all A’s. • Make time to talk about school and schoolwork. Your son will feel that you are interested in his education. • Have your son set routines for homework and chores. This shows your son that you are confident in his abilities to get the “little things” done by himself – and will prepare him to tackle larger goals. Reprinted with permission from the February 2010 issue of Parents Still Make The Difference! ® (High School Edition). Copyright © 2010 The Parent Institute ®, a Division of NIS, Inc.

Keep the lines of communication open – without getting a search warrant. Are you staying in touch without snooping? Answer yes or no to the questions below to find out: 1. Do you encourage your son’s friends to spend time at your house? 2. Do you offer to drive your son and friends to school events? This is a great way to hear what’s going on. 3. Do you schedule one-on-one time with your son Sometimes, this is all it takes for a boy to open up. 4. Do you check your son’s page on social networking sites? Your son is sharing this information with the public, which means he must also share it with you. 5. Do you sometimes just hang out with your son? Watching TV together can lead to great talks. How well are you doing? Each yes means you’re communicating without snooping. For each no answer, try that idea in the quiz.

Teach your son how to create a “study island” for success.

Reprinted with permission from the February 2010 issue of Parents Still Make The Difference! ® (High School Edition). Copyright © 2010 The Parent Institute ®, a Division of NIS, Inc.

Today’s teens never seem to focus on one thing at a time. They send text messages while they read their history. They watch TV while they’re writing their English paper. And they’re not doing any of it well. Research shows that the brain can really focus only on one thing at a time. So one of the best ways you can help your son be successful is to create a “study island.”

Rule out vision problems if your son is having trouble in school.

It should be a quiet place--somewhere your son can focus on studying. And it should be separated from the rest of the world. That means no phone or text messages and no TV. It also means only using the Internet for school work during study time. Have your son try this for a few weeks. Keep track of how long it takes him to do his homework. Also keep track of the grades he receives. Before long, he should begin to notice a difference. When he studies on his “study island,” his grades will go up. Reprinted with permission from the February 2010 issue of Parents Still Make The Difference! ® (High School Edition). Copyright © 2010 The Parent Institute ®, a Division of NIS, Inc.

If your son is having trouble with school, the problem may be his eyes. Studies show that as many as one in four students has a vision problem. Some may be so serious that they can’t see well enough to read the board. Or, they could have trouble seeing close up to read. Not all schools test students’ vision. And students may not know that their academic problems are really caused by poor vision. In particular, close-vision problems may go undetected. Here are some signs your son may have a vision problem: • Squinting. Kids who can’t see well sometimes squint to try to improve their vision. • Headaches. Students who strain to read the board or their book may get headaches. • Holding books too closely. If you notice these signs, ask your doctor for a vision test. A pair of glasses may improve your son’s vision – and his grades. Reprinted with permission from the February 2010 issue of Parents Still Make The Difference! ® (High School Edition). Mothers’ Club (continued) Fran Johnson Enrichment Program

St. Valentine

On Tuesday, December 1, 2009, the Mothers’ Club launched the Fran Johnson Lecture Series with a presentation to all students entitled “Character Does Matter.”

Patron Saint of Lovers February 14, 2010

The Travis Manion Foundation organized and co-sponsored the event which featured Ryan Manion Borek, (sister of 1st Lt. Travis Manion USMC ‘99) and Navy SEAL, Rhodes Scholar, and Humanitarian Eric Greitens of The Mission Continues, which is based in Saint Louis. Mr. Greiten, shared photos and stories from his experiences working with refugees in warn-torn countries to highlight the importance of committing one’s self to serving others and encouraged the students to realize their potential for leadership by learning to work with others. Ms. Manion Borek relayed stories about her brother’s path to leadership and heroism, reminding the students that they need not look far beyond the halls of La Salle to perform acts of courage. She emphasized that her brother Travis was an ordinary boy who faced the same types of choices and challenges the audience faces: getting pinned in a wrestling match and having to get up and go out again next time; watching an injustice to a friend and choosing not to stand by but to say something; even facing the fact that his sister was a better basketball player. Ultimately though, Travis emerged as a Naval Academy graduate and dedicated Marine who stated, “If not me, then who?’, when someone suggested he find a way not to go to Iraq for a second tour of duty where he lost his life. Every boy present for “Character Does Matter” will likely always remember Travis’ self-less statement: “If not me, then who?” In doing so, will perpetuate his legacy as well as the legacy of all LaSalle men educated for lives of service, compassion, courage and commitment. A second “Character Does Matter” lecture will be cosponsored by the Mothers’ Club and the Travis Manion Foundation in the spring. The Fran Johnson Lecture Series is funded through the grant program founded by the Mothers’ Club to honor and remember beloved faculty member, Fran Johnson. Anyone wishing to recommend a speaker for the Fran Johnson Lecture Series should contact Mrs. Julia Maher at (215) 233-2911.

There are varying opinions as to the origin of Valentine’s Day. Most experts agree that it originated from Valentinus, a physician and priest in Rome, who was martyred on February 14, 270. During his last weeks, the jailer asked Valentius if he would teach his daughter Julia, who had been blind since birth. Valentinus agreed and taught her to pray. Julia asked God to cure her blindness. As Valentinus and Julia prayed together, a bright light shown in the jail and she was healed. On the eve of his death, Valentinus wrote a note to Julia asking her to stay close to God. Legend says that Valentius signed the note “From Your Valentine” and Julia planted a pink-blossomed almond tree near his grave. In 496, Pope Gelasius set aside February 14th to honor St. Valentine. The custom of sending Valentines on this day stems from a medieval belief that birds began to pair on this day. Gradually, February 14th became the date for exchanging love messages and St. Valentine became the Patron Saint of Lovers. In the USA, Miss Esther Howland is given credit for sending the first valentine cards. Commercial valentines were introduced in the late 1800’s and are credited for helping to create the likes of Hallmark.

St. Vincent’s Soup Kitchen Every weekend through the end of the school year, the Men of La Salle will continue our service to those less fortunate in our community, by helping to prepare and serve meals at St. Vincent’s. The Soup Kitchen is located at 109 East Price Street in the Germantown section of Philadelphia. This is a great opportunity for fathers and sons to spend some time together in service to the needy in our community, while at the same time setting an example to give back. Volunteers are needed to prepare food every Saturday and serve every Sunday from 9:30 to 11:30 am and 12:30 to 2:30 pm. No experience is needed, just a desire to spend time together and help others. Please go online to sign up and help make a difference.

Father/Son Baseball Outing Details are now being finalized for what is typically a sellout event. Keep an eye out for e-mails as we get closer for the date and time. The Orioles will be playing the Red Sox. The day will begin with Morning Mass, followed by coach bus service to reserved seating in the stadium, and a trip to the Inner Harbor make for an exciting day. Don’t miss this opportunity to share America’s favorite pastime with your sons!

As you all know and have seen by now, we have transformed our campus into one of the finest educational resources available to young men in the Delaware Valley. Combine that with having an elite faculty and staff and we believe that we have secured our ability to attract and maintain the best and brightest students for many more years to come. We believe that the Fulfilling the Promise Capital Campaign has been a success in almost every measure imaginable. This past summer, we decided that it was time to bring the Campaign to our current parents and offer them the opportunity to support what we are offering our young men. We understood that our current parents have more financial demands on them than anyone else in our community and that the economical timing could have been much better, but we felt it necessary to at the very least share our vision and thinking. Our plan, which is still in motion, is to contact our families and offer them a personal visit with our President, Brother Richard, to hear about the state of the school, the Campaign, and to be asked for their support. We didn’t know exactly what we were going to hear on the other end when we started these visits, but we’re sure glad we made the decision to move forward with the idea. These personal visits have served much more of a purpose than just a solicitation for support. What has opened up is a dialogue between both parties and the opportunity to get a glimpse into one another’s mindset on the commonality of a Lasallian education. I know that Brother Richard is very proud that so many of our families have stepped forward for these visits and have generously offered whatever support they could provide. To date, over 30 families have committed $350,000 in gifts to this Campaign and we’re doing our best to get to the rest of our interested families. So, from someone who participates in these visits and is able to observe them as they unfold, I just want to say thank you to all of you that have been open to these visits and please be assured that it has opened up a very important dialogue between parents and educators.
