March 2010 Volume Nineteen Number 7

Dear Parents and Guardians, With the snowy month of February behind us, it is pleasant to know that the warm months of spring are just around the corner. La Salle will soon thaw out of its wintery outer shell, and spring athletes will be back on our fields. La Salle will host several events in the warm weather, and before we know it, our seniors will trade in hats and gloves for caps and gowns, as they leave for college ambitions. In preparation for the upcoming academic year, I am pleased to announce that over 270 boys have registered for next year’s freshman class – Class of 2014. In addition, we have begun recruiting for the Class of 2015, and our Seventh Grade Practice Test will be administered on Saturday, March 6, 2010. If you know of any worthy candidates, please encourage them to consider La Salle and take our practice test. The spring months will also invite back Lasallians of the past. On March 7, 2010, the Alumni Association will induct three members into our Hall of Fame – John J. “Jack” Bauerle ’70, Brother Michael J. McGinniss, FSC ’65, and Edward R. Solvibile ’58. At the ceremony, we will also honor John C. Fenningham, Esq. ’68 and James E. McCloskey ’64 with the William J. Whelan ’55 Alumni Service Award. In addition, La Salle will honor boys who have excelled in the classroom with the National Honor Society Induction held on Sunday, March 14, 2010. Congratulations to the young men who have earned this honor, and their commitment to the four qualities of character, knowledge, leadership, and service that are so essential to a Lasallian education. Sophomores and their fathers will take part in a day of service day on Wednesday, March 24, 2010 for Sophomore Branch-Out Day. I encourage all sophomore dads to take part in this day. It is a wonderful opportunity to spend meaningful time with your son in doing Christian service for those in need throughout the Greater Philadelphia Area. Following the hilarious fall performance of Neil Simon’s Plaza Suite, our Theater Program has begun practicing for its spring production. I hope to see many of you at Smokey Joe’s Café, which run March 25-28, 2010. Best wishes to Mr. Dominick, the cast, and crew for a most wonderful show. In addition to the theater performance, congratulations to the eight students from La Salle College High School who were selected to the 2010 Philadelphia Archdiocesan All-Catholic Chorus. With the winter sports season near completion, I’d like to thank all of our teams for their hard work, commitment, and success. La Salle has once again showed the depth of our students’ athletic talent in repeating as Philadelphia Catholic League and District 12 Champions in both Wrestling and Swimming. In addition, our Basketball and Ice Hockey teams are gearing up for post-season play. Thanks to our athletic department, coaches, and student-athletes who help make La Salle shine! I would like to acknowledge our students, faculty, and staff for their support of our annual Mission Appeal that was directed to the Brothers’ works in Africa. Our twin school in Africa is the Bishop Ndingi Center for Skills Formation located in Nakuru, Kenya. Special thanks to Brother William DiPasquale, FSC for his leadership of this drive. I would also like to thank our school community for their generous support towards the devastation suffered by the people of Haiti. As we anticipate the Risen Lord during this prayerful spring season of Lent, I encourage every La Salle family to think about a way to reach out and serve others. Always know that we here at La Salle College High School pray for you daily and thank you for entrusting your sons to our care. We are extremely appreciative of all that you do for La Salle. I wish you and your family a prayerful Lenten season. Best regards,

Brother Richard Kestler, FSC ’60 President

Office of the Principal Joseph L. Marchese Principal

Dear Parents and Guardians, Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, Ning, Xanga, DailyBooth, etc. All of these (and about 170 others) are social networking Web sites that may have escaped your notice, but have likely grabbed the attention and involvement of many of your sons. Indeed, it is likely that many La Salle students have been drawn into Facebook, Twitter, or MySpace, where they spend a great deal of time interacting with one another by posting messages and photos. It appears that e-mail is rapidly becoming obsolete as these social networking sites are now the predominant way in which our boys communicate with one another – for better or worse. While the intentions of these sites may be to foster positive social interaction between teenagers and young adults, the reality is that they sometimes become avehicle for inappropriate comments, bullying, threats, and other negative interactions. What amazes me is the lack of discretion that some of our students have been guilty of. It seems that, no matter how often we tell them that there is no such thing as privacy on the Internet, many boys are still surprised when their comments or photos have come to the attention of unintended eyes. It disappoints me to say that each year over the past five years that I have been Principal of La Salle, we have had to discipline a student (or several students) for serious violations of school rules through the use of one of these social networking sites. In some cases, the disciplinary penalty invoked was as serious as expulsion. Please remind your son of one important paragraph in our Student Handbook which reads as follows: Conduct Off Campus: Students are responsible for the good name of the school. La Salle College High School reserves the right to discipline students for off campus conduct detrimental to the reputation of the school, harmful to anyone in the school community, or not representative of the community’s ideals. Students who bring discredit to themselves or to La Salle College High School as a result of improper conduct outside of the school will be dealt with in an appropriate manner when the conduct becomes known to the school. The seriousness of this statement, and the requisite adherence to it, cannot be overemphasized. I would strongly suggest that you monitor your son’s use of these social networking sites. Colleges and potential employers have been known to inspect the pages of applicants or future employees. If your son has a page on Facebook, Twitter, etc., please instruct him as to the judicious use of such, and the concept of proper conduct in light of La Salle’s focus on integrity, respect, and brotherhood. Hopefully, together we can assist our young men to not only appreciate the value of technology and the use of social networking sites, but also to impress upon them the responsibility associated with such. Sincerely yours,

Joseph L. Marchese Principal

La Salle Responds

Information on private transportation to La Salle from Bucks County and Philadelphia will be mailed to families who are already using this service in early spring. Anyone else who would be interested in this information, please contact the Student Affairs Office at (215) 233-2911.

La Salle’s Wing Bowl On Friday February 5, 2010, the Student Council sponsored its annual Wing Bowl. Thirteen contestants entered the gym to their “song,” accompanied by an entourage. Contestants came from the various classes as well as two faculty/staff participants – Mr. Matthews and Mr. Carabello. The champion this year was Ryan Geiger ’11, who beat out Mr. C in the final round.

Student Council Mixer The last mixer of the school year is scheduled for Friday, March 19, 2010. The dance will feature the music of Solid Ground. Remind your sons that only males from La Salle are eligible to attend. Some girl tickets will again be available through La Salle.

Inclement Weather Announcement An ALERT NOW message will be sent out as soon as a decision has been made to close school. A reminder to all parents to update your information (e-mail and telephone contact information) if it has changed recently. You can do so by e-mailing Carol Haggerty at haggerty@lschs.org La Salle’s website is another source for such announcements (www.lschs.org). KYW 1060 AM and television broadcasts are also another source for information. Our school number is 333. In case of snow during a school day, an early dismissal will be announced via ALERT NOW, KYW, and the television stations as soon as a decision has been reached. We would appreciate your cooperation in NOT calling the school on these days.

Students, faculty, and staff contributed almost $7,000 to the last dress down in January. Their generosity was in direct response to the devastation suffered by the people of Haiti. The funds will be sent to Reverend Tom Hagan (a former teacher at North Catholic) and the organization Hands Together, Inc. The earthquake destroyed every program and structure built by Hands Together over the past fifteen years, but could not destroy its relationships with the people, its faith in a loving God, nor its mission to “join hands” to build a better world. At the present time there is a 50% matching program for all donations – so our money would be one and a half times as valuable for the people of Haiti. The next dress down day will be on Friday, February 26, 2010 and the funds collected will benefit Coaches vs. Cancer.

Campus Store Barbara Wisotzkey Gerry Clark The School Store attempts to meet the needs of all students, so we carry all required paperbacks for English, Social Studies, and Religion. We have two new ties and are carrying copies of the Pictorial Anniversary Book of La Salle. We also have a limited supply of Championship football shirts (sizes L and XL only) for $10.00. The store is open on school days from 8:00 am to 1:30 pm. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call us at (215) 233-2911, ext. 4859.

2010-2011 Registration/Course Selection

National Merit Finalists

By now, each family should have received a registration letter from Academic Affairs announcing that course selection for the 2010-2011 school year is about to begin. As explained in the mailing, this requires a $50 annual fee. A student will not be allowed to participate in the process unless this financial obligation is completed. As explained previously, Academic Affairs sets aside the months of February and March for this purpose. Each student will spend February deciding what courses best meet his wants and needs. He will then spend time in March evaluating this selection with his counselor(s). As soon as a student’s selections are approved by their appropriate counselor, a “parent sign-off sheet” will show up in your son’s Naviance account under “course requests.” This form will serve as a verification of his requests for next year. Each student, along with his parents, should review this document to make sure that the courses listed are those he needs and/or requested for next year. If there are any problems or errors, the student should see his counselor as soon as possible. The selection process ends school wide on Wednesday, March 31, 2010. Students and/or parents have until Friday, April 16, 2010, to request changes by working the appropriate teacher and/or counselor. It is during the month of May that resources are secured, the school’s master schedule is created, and the rostering of students for classes begins. Please help us meet these deadlines; it absolutely necessary for students to use the resources allotted during these course selection weeks. If you have questions or concerns about placements in World Language (Mrs. Diccicco), Math (Mr. Ponisciak), or Science (Mr. Gillespie), please contact the appropriate department chair in these areas. Other more specific concerns in placement should be forwarded to the appropriate department chairperson or AP teacher.

Congratulations to the fourteen member of the Class of 2010 that were selected as National Merit Finalists:

The scheduling of students at La Salle takes a number of months to complete and is an arduous task since we are attempting to build individualized rosters for nearly 1,100 students. Thus, once a roster is complete and the school year begins, that is the student’s roster. We are unable and cannot honor requests for specific teachers, lunch periods, or early dismissals (unless supported in advance by compelling educational reasons). Remember that the start of school is not the time to create or recreate a roster. We simply do not have the manpower to schedule our students at their leisure. Your support of our efforts here is always greatly appreciated.

These seniors are now in a group of just 15,000 students nationwide that will compete for 8,200 Merit Scholarships.

Semester Honor Role Announced This issue of The Belcroft proudly lists our honor students who have worked long and hard to reach their exemplary academic status. Congratulations to them for attaining such a high academic distinction. They are an inspiration to our school and the Lasallian community.

The Importance of Latin and Greek in English Today by Bill Geiger ’72 We teach Latin and classical Greek at La Salle because they provide a terrific educational foundation. More than fifty percent of English vocabulary is taken from Latin. All the romance languages (Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, etc.) are based on Latin. Moreover, the study of Latin and Greek demand a very high level of competence with grammar. By learning these languages, our students can have a facility with grammar that most other high school students are hard pressed to attain. It is commonly noted that acquiring this competence with grammar stretches and strengthens the mind. As some like to put the matter, learning Latin and Greek are to the mind, such as physical education is to the body. Most children even find these languages fun.

Graduation

By studying Latin and Greek, students also gain valuable insight into the achievements of the Roman and Greek worlds (sculpture, architecture, sport, religious and political life, etc.). Finally, according to the National Committee for Latin and Greek, the study of Latin and/or Greek can also help student performance on college entrance exams. For example, high school students with two or more years of Latin typically score 140-160 points higher on the SAT than their Latin-less peers. The College Board (the publishers of the SAT) found that students with a background in Latin came in with higher scores in critical reading skills than students with a background in any other language.

As is the custom at La Salle, we would like to know if there are any graduates of the Class of 2010, who have members of the clergy in their families that would like to participate in the Baccalaureate Mass scheduled for Thursday, June 3, 2010. If you have a family member who is a priest, and he would like to concelebrate the Mass at graduation, please contact Mrs. Suzanne Russo by Friday, April 30, 2010 at (215) 233-2911, ext. 4896.

Students at La Salle have the option to take one, two, or three years of Latin, and one of Greek. They may take Latin in their sophomore, junior, or senior year, but if they take Latin as a sophomore, they give themselves a better chance to continue into higher levels. Latin I covers the foundations of the language, Latin II a more advanced study in grammar and vocabulary, and Latin III a chance to read Roman authors. Greek may also be taken in the sophomore, junior, or senior year.

Return Award Letters

There’s money out there. Our college website, www.lschs.org/college has links to numerous scholarship search sites, as well as a variety of posted scholarship opportunities. Don’t miss out!

In March or April, your son should begin receiving merit and need based grant awards from the colleges to which he applied. After he compares award letters, he should pick which college he wants to attend and return the signed award letter to the chosen college. Pay close attention to deadlines for accepting the award package. Deadlines are usually within two weeks after receiving the award letter. If he misses a deadline, he may risk losing a scholarship, grant, or loan assistance. Communicate with faculty and the College Counseling Department. Please encourage your son to thank the teachers who may have written letters of recommendation on his behalf. Also, please remember to bring copies of all college acceptance and scholarship letters to Mrs. O’Connell in the College Counseling Center.

File Financial Aid Forms Be sure to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as possible. Many colleges have priority deadlines of February 1, 2010 or February 15, 2010. This application must be completed in order to apply for state, federal, and institutional financial aid and deadlines must be met. Before filling out the FAFSA, register for a PIN at www.pin.ed.gov. This will serve as your electronic signature. It is important to fill out the form completely and to estimate if necessary. It is better to meet the deadline and make changes later than to miss the deadline and potentially miss out on financial aid. You can file the FAFSA online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. We strongly encourage everyone to fill out the FAFSA. At the very least, it will make your son eligible for several low interest loans such as the Federal Stafford Loan (www.staffordloan.com). If there are extenuating circumstances that a college financial aid officer at a college where your son has been admitted should know, do not hesitate to report these changes or circumstances to the colleges. Certain colleges may also require either their own institutional financial aid form or the College Scholarship Services (CSS) Profile www.collegeboard.org/profile. Be aware of colleges’ requirements and meet the deadlines.

Keep Grades Up Admissions decisions are contingent on the successful completion of all course work. Admissions officers reserve the right to question poor second semester performance and, in some cases, to reverse an admissions decision that has already been made. We have examples of students whose grades dropped second semester resulting in their receiving letters from the college or university they planned to attend informing them their acceptance will now be re-considered.

Decline Admission Offers To Other Colleges After he has chosen and committed to a college, your son should write a note declining admission to colleges that he has been accepted, but will not be attending. This will allow students on a waiting list to be accepted and awarded the aid previously held for your son.

Submit Deposit And Housing Application Once your son knows which college he wants to attend, he can submit a housing application and deposit if he will be living on campus. He needs to do this as soon as possible because most rooms are assigned on a first-come first-served basis. The National Reply Date is May 1, 2010.

Do Not Double Deposit Each year some seniors have a difficult time making up their minds about which college to enroll in after they have been accepted. Students may NOT send deposits to more than one college on or after May 1, 2010. This is called “double depositing” and is an unethical practice. Should the colleges involved determine that a student has “double deposited” your son’s admission may be jeopardized. This practice is unfair to other applicants. The “double depositor” is taking up a spot that could go to another student, who will instead be wait-listed or turned down. It is an acceptable practice to deposit at one college and maintain your name on a wait list at another. However, indicating to two colleges that you will be attending by sending deposits to both should not be considered.

Building Bridges of Solidarity

Thank you to the parents of juniors, who attended College Information Night in February. The college counselors appreciate your interest and support. If you have not yet done so, please send the release of academic information, college criteria, and parent’s input forms to the College Counseling Center as soon as possible.

Cochabamba, Bolivia

A wealth of information is available on the Internet about the College Search process. A good starting site is our comprehensive webpage: www.lschs.org/college. In addition, each college and university has its own website. According to our current seniors and recent graduates, visiting college campuses is most important in making a good decision. It is most informative if the visits occur while students are on campus, so we strongly encourage visits during this second semester. Information about questions to ask on a college visit is available at www. NSSE.iub.edu. Students should send a follow-up e-mail to the college admissions office after the visit. Information about making successful visits is also available in the College Match workbook that is required for Junior Advisory Class. Since many admission decisions will be based on the junior year GPA in college preparatory courses, we suggest that students take their academic responsibilities most seriously. While participation in activities is a factor used to tip the scales in the admission process, primary focus is on the student’s GPA.

SAT/ACT Take advantage of the test preparation module on Naviance. Short sample tests of the SAT and ACT can be taken to determine which of these two formats is best suited to each student. Practice tests and tutorial packets are available at this site. Registration deadlines and test dates for each test are available on our web page. For latest news regarding financial aid, check out the news articles listed under “College Links and Websites” on our webpage www.lschs.org/college. Señora Lastenia Breen, a member of La Salle’s Spanish faculty, is asking for your generosity towards the people of Cochabamba, Bolivia. They are in need of usable clothing for all age groups, including newborns (no XL or bulky clothing). This past summer, nineteen La Salle students and three faculty members traveled to Cochabamba, and distributed clothes and food donated by the La Salle families to children in hospitals, country-side schools, and the poor working class. They also helped to construct, paint, and cement rural schools. We need your help again. Building Bridges of Solidarity, will be traveling to Cochabamba, Bolivia in June of 2010 to help assist the people of the country. All La Salle families are invited to help with this International Lasallian Outreach. Donations will be accepted at any time at the La Salle College High School Language Office. Thank you for your generosity. If you have any questions at all, please contact Señora Lastenia Breen at breen@lschs.org

The Importance of

Vocabulary

by Jo Ann P. Cohen, PhD

After years of painstaking research into the factors behind life and career success, research scientist Johnson O’Connor wrote: “An extensive knowledge of the exact meanings of English words accompanies outstanding success in this country more often than any other single characteristic we have been able to isolate and measure.” One of the most controversial issues that individuals studying for tests encounter is how exactly to improve vocabulary skills. The argument against teaching vocabulary directly is that there are way too many words to teach. But, learning vocabulary words simply by reading is an all encompassing, overwhelming task. For example, many words are considered “first tier” and are encountered daily. They include words like car, bus or table. These words are not found on upper level vocabulary tests. Second tier words appear less frequently, so the chance of learning them when a student is reading is slim. Third tier words are specific to subject areas, and would not be learned if a student was unfamiliar with a specific subject. For example “pizzicato” the Italian term meaning “to pluck” is known to violinists, because it is written on top of certain passages when the musician should pluck the strings instead of using a bow. Chances of learning what pizzicato means if you are not a musician is rather slim. Standardized tests that measure learning are vocabulary based, that is, they measure directly or indirectly knowledge of word meanings. Psychologists who study strategies for improving test performance have found that a student’s knowledge of vocabulary is directly related to tests scores, and that this relationship is not related to subject. So, even an exam on carpentry would show that people with better vocabulary get higher scores. This makes sense if you think about it. People who are well read would know more vocabulary words in general (in any subject area) compared to someone who shuns reading. Reading is considered the best way to improve knowledge of word meanings. Likewise, people with a higher IQ would most likely have a better vocabulary and would get higher scores on almost any kind of test. For years now, many teachers and publishers have tried to help students improve scores on standardized tests (such as the SAT). The weight of opinion is that directly increasing vocabulary is the most effective method for improving scores. But, improving test scores is only one of the many factors that will improve with a more robust vocabulary. Employers also use a candidate’s ability to employ a variety of vocabulary words and to speak clearly as an important tool in assessing competency. Every time a person speaks, someone is evaluating competence and success.

Peer pressure in teen years builds important social skills. When most parents think of peer pressure, they picture their babies cornered at parties, being offered drugs or alcohol. But that isn’t always the case. There’s positive peer pressure as well – such as when your son’s friends encourage him to join the soccer team or help cut the lawn for an elderly neighbor. New research shows that both types of peer pressure – positive and negative – are beneficial to children’s social development. Peer pressure teaches teens how to gauge other people’s feelings and expectations and how to weigh those against their own wants and needs. The study isn’t suggesting that teens should always give in to peer pressure. It found that teens who felt both negative and positive peer pressure and occasionally gave in when the risks were low – were more socially successful as adults. They learned how to read other people and how to accommodate others, which are important components in adult relationships. On the other hand, teens who always avoided peer pressure turned out to be less engaged socially. Those who didn’t care what anyone thought of them became more aloof, disconnected adults, and were less adept at being considerate of people’s feelings. Encourage your son to stick to his beliefs and values, but remind him to mind the balance between being able to stand up to a friend and still preserving the friendship. Teach your son how to handle stress. The stress of everyday life – school, friends, family, jobs, extracurricular activities, etc. – can really take a toll on your son’s health. Stress has been linked to weight gain, headaches, mood swings, poor grades and sleep problems. To keep your son’s stress from overwhelming him, encourage him to: • Calm down. If he’s feeling stressed, he should stop what he’s doing and take a few deep breaths. Squeezing a stress ball can help alleviate tension. • Vent. Your son could write in a journal or talk to you about what’s going on. • Take a break. If math homework is stressing him out, work on history for a while. He could listen to music for a while – or go for a jog or run to clear his head. • Avoid procrastination. Planning ahead always helps. Have your son talk to his teacher if he’s having trouble completing a project on time. Tame your nerves when it comes to tough talks with your son.

Show your son how to be financially self-disciplined.

Teens face difficult issues every day – from sex and dating concerns, to drugs and violence. You aren’t helping your son if you cover your ears every time he asks you a tough question.

It’s already spring – just about time for your son to begin looking for a summer job. Before he gets that first paycheck and hits the mall, teach him about financial selfdiscipline.

Be prepared to have an open conversation with your son to discuss these issues. It’s better for you to share your family’s values with your son than for him to go along with whatever his friends are doing.

Here’s how:

Here are some tips for surviving tough talks with your son:

• Talk about how your son handles money now. Does he have a savings account? Or does he spend money as soon as he gets it?

• Do some thinking in advance. It’s natural that your son will eventually come to you to talk about a difficult issue. Spend time thinking of typical teen behaviors and how you would advise your son to address them. • Avoid delaying the conversation. Your son will likely catch you off guard with his question, but realize that if he’s asking your advice on a situation, he has probably already asked his friends for their advice. You’ll have to answer the question right away. Buy yourself some time to think by saying something like, “I’m glad you came to me with that question.” • Be clear and honest in your response. Discuss your family’s values. Use proper terminology for things rather than slang. If you’re embarrassed, say so. Your son will be more likely to turn to you in the future if he knows you’ll give honest advice without being judgmental. Reprinted with permission from the March 2010 issue of Parents Still Make The Difference! ® (High School Edition). Copyright © 2010 The Parent Institute ®, a Division of NIS, Inc.

• Ask your son why he wants the job. Is it to help out your family? Is he saving for college? Does he just want some extra spending money?

• Help your son come up with a savings goal. Discuss what he would like to save money for, and how much he thinks he could save by September. • Work out a budget with your son. It would be great if your son could put every penny he earns toward savings – but it’s not likely. Even the most disciplined teen may need some money for an emergency bike repair. • Encourage your son to stick to his budget. Share some of your money-saving tips with him such as using coupons from the Sunday newspaper or waiting to buy something until it goes on sale. Helping your son learn how to handle money responsibly now will benefit him greatly in the future. Reprinted with permission from the March 2010 issue of Parents Still Make The Difference! ® (High School Edition). Copyright © 2010 The Parent Institute ®, a Division of NIS, Inc.

Help your son look for and understand key ideas in text. When your son is reading assignments, have him use a four-step process that will help him look for and understand key ideas: • Preview. Look over the assignment. Identify key ideas. Look at pictures. Read chapter headings and words in bold type. • Ask questions. Write questions he thinks may be answered. Turn to the end of the chapter and look for review questions. • Read. Now read the assignment carefully. As he finds answers to questions, he can check them off his list. If he has not found answers to all his questions, go back to reread. • Summarize. Restate, in his own words, what he has just read. If he can, he is finished. If he can’t, he needs to go back through each of the steps again. Reprinted with permission from the March 2010 issue of Parents Still Make The Difference! ® (High School Edition). SpeakUp! Representatives from SpeakUp! will address the next Men of La Salle meeting on March 4th, 6:30 PM in the Study Commons. SpeakUp! is a program designed to open conversation on topics often uncomfortable among parents, teens, and educators. It stands alone among similar programs because the conversations take place in safe, non-judgmental environment. The insights of the night result in a learning experience for all. Students from Gywnedd Mercy Academy, Mount Saint Joseph Academy, and La Salle College High School have planned a night of OPEN communication between young adults and their parents and have worked rigorously to make this night a success. Some of the topics include: • Sex and Pressure • Alcohol and Drugs • Parent/Child Relations and Communications • Stress and Perfection

Running on Broadway for more than 2,000 performances, “Smokey Joe’s Cafe” is more than a musical review – it is the soundtrack for a generation; playing out once again as the backdrop for a trip back to the “Neighborhood,” and the ensuing journey forward known as life. Second only to McCartney and Lennon, Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller were the most successful song writing team of the 1950’s and 1960’s, penning hits for Elvis, The Drifters, The Coasters, Ben E. King, and many others. But more than their success as a song writing team, their songs captured the awkwardness and innocence of young love; the path forward as we left the old neighborhood seeking to make our way in the world; the joys of love found; the pain of love lost; and the ultimate realization that perhaps everything we ever really needed in life was always right there where we started. Featuring such great hits as Dance With Me, Fools Fall in Love, Kansas City, On Broadway, Yakety Yak, Loving You, Hound Dog, Spanish Harlem, and the classic Stand By Me – Smokey Joe’s Café promises to be an evening of high energy entertainment, intertwined with a trip back through the scrapbook of our memories which define our lives.

Men of Respect

“Threepeat”

AIMING FOR A by Dan Cruice

As the Philadelphia region eagerly awaits the warming thaw and soothing rays of spring, the La Salle Lacrosse Team prepares to defend its two-time Pennsylvania State Championship run. Two years ago, it was the Explorers who captured the last contested Keystone Cup, and last June, the Explorers captured the inaugural Pennsylvania PIAA State Lacrosse Championship. Each of those respective squads was led by a group of very senior and very talented players, many of whom have gone on to play at the top levels of NCAA collegiate lacrosse. This year’s team, many of which apprenticed under the experienced and talented group of predecessors, will again be among a select group of teams who will be favored for the highly competitive and hotly contested State Lacrosse Championship. The 2010 lacrosse squad hopes to add to the growing collection of State titles the Explorers have recently won. In the last two years, in the addition to the two state titles the lacrosse squad has won, the Ice Hockey team has also won two state titles, and most recently the football team made history with the first PIAA State Football Championship for District 12. The varsity team this year will be anchored by a returning mix of seniors and juniors who tasted the competition and joy of the previous two years. Returning seniors such as Dan Losier, Christian Cardinal, Patrick Resch, Shane Pierce, Wesley Meehan, Anthony Cognetti, Vinny Migliarese, Tim Durkin, Nolan Funchion, and Ryan Saraceni will provide leadership and experience. These senior players will be complimented by a group of very talented juniors, which includes: Kevin Forster, Jack Bogorowski, Nick Cruice, Mark DiFrangia, Victor Garcia, Zack Jones, Joe Brown, Luke Vrancken, Shawn Warrender, and Alex Carapelloti.

The season for the Explorers will kick off with a one day scrimmage at the Christian Brother’s Tournament in Washington, DC on March 14, 2010. The regular season begins with a non-league tilt with perennial powerhouse, Haverford School, on March 26, 2010, followed by a big game with St. Joseph’s Prep on April 3, 2010. This highly anticipated rivalry will be played at Widener University and will be a 6:00 pm start. Other highlights to the schedule will be a rematch of last year’s thriller with DC powerhouse Georgetown Prep. The game this year will be a part of the Haverford School’s Checking for Cancer Tournament and will take place on Saturday, April 17, 2010 at 12:00 pm. Additionally, the Explorers will once again participate in the Katie Samson Festival at Radnor High School. This year’s event will take place on April 2, 2010 as La Salle takes on Lower Merion at 11:30 am. Other notable contests include: Episcopal Academy Malvern Prep Springfield Delco Morristown (NJ) Downingtown East

Home Away Away Home Away

After this competitive schedule, and with the leadership of coaches Bill Leahy and Tony Resch, La Salle will commence play for the Philadelphia Catholic League Championship, and an automatic berth into the PIAA tournament beginning on May 21, 2009. The 2010 La Salle Lacrosse Team hopes to create their own legacy and add to the impressive list of recent Pennsylvania State Championships. Come spring, come out and support your Explorers.
