April 2012 Volume Twenty-One Number 8

Dear Parents and Guardians, Allow me to wish you and your family all the blessings of the Easter Season. The events leading up to this Holy Day shows us that forgiveness and salvation are possible for any imperfections we might have – we just have to ask. I encourage you to join our fellow Christians in marking this Sacred Triduum – Holy Thursday and the institution of the Holy Eucharist, Good Friday and the passion and death of Jesus, and then the glorious triumph of the Resurrection on Easter. May these Lenten days and the pinnacle they reach at the Sacred Triduum be for each of us a special and holy time to grow in the love God so graciously gives to each of us. March and its winds have blown in lots of news here on campus. It was the end of February that the Archdiocese announced its decision to recommit to four archdiocesan secondary schools that had been slated for closure. At this time, I entered into discussions with our Provincial and also with the Archdiocese of Philadelphia regarding the position of President at West Catholic High School. With reassurances from the Archdiocese, the Christian Brothers are committed to doing everything possible to keep its mission at West Catholic open and continuing to provide a solid Catholic education grounded in the footsteps of Saint John Baptist de La Salle. I have accepted the call to lead West Catholic; therefore, I will leave my post at La Salle College High School at the end of June. I am most appreciative to our Board of Trustees for their support while I contemplated this decision, and I especially thank Brother James Butler, FSC who most generously agreed to assume leadership sooner than originally planned. Both Mr. Marchese and I are so proud to be able to hand over the reins of this fine institution on July 1, 2012 to two men who know and love this school. Under the excellent leadership of Brother James Butler, FSC and Mr. Michael O’Toole ’68, my Alma Mater will continue to flourish as the leader in Catholic education in Delaware Valley. I am grateful to our Board of Trustees, especially our Chair, Benjamin Ventresca ’70, who guided the searches for these two important leadership positions and to the members of the search committees for their time, dedication, and diligence. Thank you on behalf of the entire La Salle community. We are truly blessed! Please know how much these seven years has meant to me and how much I have enjoyed every part of La Salle. Working with talented students and teachers, a dedicated administration and staff, and supportive parents and alumni has made possible the great things that have been accomplished during my tenure.

After eleven years, Mr. Tony Resch has decided to step down from his position as Athletic Director and assume new responsibilities in our Counseling Department. Mr. Resch has been one of the most successful Athletic Directors in La Salle’s history and a search for his replacement is now underway.

There is no doubt that La Salle College High School is home to extraordinary extracurriculars. Special congratulations to our Swimming and Hockey teams, both of whom captured Pennsylvania State Championships. Special congratulations to the coaching staffs of both teams. At the same time La Salle positioned itself in Speech and Debate by taking 10 of 12 top sports in the State competition. I would be remiss if I did not highlight this year’s spring musical, City of Angels, which showcased the talents of our students in the area of theatre, music, and stage production/management. Under the guidance of Mr. Dominick, this production played to four packed houses. All of this leads me to grant an extraordinary holiday to mark these achievements. School will be closed on Wednesday, April 4, 2012. Please remember that we did not have to cancel school or delay the start of classes due to inclement weather this year. Looking ahead, April will be filled with all sorts of spring activities and socials. Yet, again the calendar is filled with opportunities to enjoy some fresh air in the company of fellow fans. Please come out and support our teams – they love to see you there! May you and yours enjoy the gift of new life – both in nature as well as personally. Happy Easter! Sincerely yours,

Brother Richard Kestler, FSC ’60 President

National Honor Society La Salle’s annual National Honor Society Induction Ceremony was held on the evening of Tuesday, March 6, 2012. Academic Affairs is excited to report that 119 new members were inducted into the La Salle College High School chapter of the National Honor Society. Reverend Anthony Janton, AFSC ’69 presided at the Eucharist and induction. Personal reflections on the characteristics of Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character were presented by the society’s senior officers: William Toner, Ryan Herbert, Ryan Murtha, and Jack Fillenwarth. The Moderators of the National Honor Society are Ms. Tina Shustack and Mrs. Dorothy Marchese. Congratulations gentlemen!

Academic Excellence Award Corrections The March 2012 issue of The Belcroft proudly listed those students who earned our Academic Excellence Award for the 1st semester. Unfortunately, the list was not complete at that time of publication. The Office of Academic Affairs would like to apologize for this error of omission. Additional students meriting placement in this area include: Tyler M. Fallon ’14, Ryan P. Meeks ’14, and Michael P. Mulligan ’15. Congratulations gentleman on a job well done!

2012-2013 Course Registration Updates Aside from the immediate priority of finishing our current academic year strong, planning for next year’s academic start is in full swing. Registration for the 2012-2013 school year is expected to finish up before Easter break begins on Wednesday, April 4, 2012. When a student finishes submitting his course requests his counselor will review and approve the selections. As soon as a student’s selections are approved, a “parent sign-off sheet” will appear in your son’s Naviance account under the “course requests” heading. This form will serve as a verification of his course requests. The student and his parents should review this document to make sure that the courses listed are those he needs and/or requested for next year. If there are any problems or errors, the student should see his counselor(s) as soon as possible. Returning the signature sheet to La Salle is the responsibility of each student. It will be collected by your son’s counselor. The process will end with you son submitting the sign-off sheet before or on Wednesday, April 4, 2012. Students will have until Monday, April 16, 2012, to entertain changes and finalize any lingering selections. On a related note, you should know that your son has been educated at length about the course selection process. He should be well aware that all placements are approved by his teachers and reviewed by the respective department leader in that subject area. If

you have questions or concerns about placements in World Language (Mrs. Diccicco), Math (Mr. Quinn), Science (Mr. Cipolla), or Social Studies (Mr. Miller), please contact the appropriate department chair in these areas. Other, more specific concerns in placements should be forwarded to the appropriate teacher or counselor. Moving forward, the scheduling of students will take months to complete. It is a complex process since we are attempting to build individualized rosters for nearly 1,100 students. Thus, once a roster is complete and the school year begins, that is the student’s roster. We cannot honor requests for specific teachers, lunch periods, or early dismissals (unless supported by compelling educational reasons). Your support of our efforts here is greatly appreciated. The Office of Academic Affairs is planning to mail students their official roster for the 2011-2012 academic during early August.

Graduation As is the custom at La Salle, we would like to know if there are any graduates of the Class of 2012 who have members of the clergy in their families who would like to participate in the Baccalaureate Mass scheduled for Thursday, May 31, 2012, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in the Andorra section of Philadelphia. If you have a family member who is a priest, and he would like to concelebrate the Mass at graduation, please contact Mrs. Suzanne Russo at (215) 402-4896 by Friday, April 27, 2012.

Strategic Plan 2011-2016 ’Academics first’ has developed into a colloquial expression in the La Salle College High School lexicon. Although direct, the meaning and interpretation of such a phrase can be discussed and debated until exhaustion. On behalf of the academic program and the office of Academic Affairs I would like to report that it has. Earlier this year La Salle College High School unveiled its institutional 5-year strategic plan. This document is the culmination and integration of serious planning on all levels. As one would expect, Academic Affairs not only contributed to its development, but will provided leadership in its execution. Upon inspection of our five goals, I am confident you will find La Salle’s commitment to providing ongoing dynamic educational opportunities to our students extremely interesting and exciting. If you have not already done so, consider reviewing the document which is found in its entirety under the “About La Salle” subheading on the school’s homepage. Expect to hear much more about La Salle’s Action Steps in the months ahead.

Take A Look www.lschs.org/college is the College Counseling Department’s page on our website. It is filled with important information about the college search and application process.

JUNIORS Juniors are reminded to be aware that April 6, 2012 is the deadline for the SAT on May 5, 2012. Consider taking the SAT II: Subject Tests on June 2, 2012 with a May 8, 2012 registration date. Many selective colleges require or recommend SAT Subject Tests for admission or placement. The ACT registration deadline is May 4 for the June 9 test. Remember to register for the Writing Section when taking the ACT. See the standardized testing tab on our website, www.lschs.org/college, for details. Also check out the Test Preparation site on Naviance for sample SAT and ACT questions, full sample tests, and tutorials – an excellent way to prepare for standardized tests at no cost to parents and students. Standardized test scores play a part in college admissions and scholarship competitions. Students hoping to play intercollegiate sports should check out the NCAA Eligibility at the Links and Resources tab at www.lschs.org/college for clearer understanding of the recruiting process and the NCAA Clearinghouse Eligibility requirements. Contact coaches, the Director of Athletics, and College Counselors with questions. As mentioned at Information Night for Parents of Juniors, another good source of information is The Winning Edge, the StudentAthlete’s Guide to College Sports published by Octameron Press. With the costs of college education increasing, now is a good time to investigate scholarship programs at www. lschs.org/college at the Scholarship Information link. For comprehensive information about financial aid, check out College Links and Resources at www.lschs.org/college. An early estimate of eligibility for federal and state financial aid, the Expected Family Contribution (EFC), can be calculated at the FAFSA site, www.FAFSA4caster.ed.gov. Parents of juniors are reminded to return to the College Counseling Center the following forms (if you have not already done so):

Parent’s Section Criteria for Selecting Colleges

Juniors are reminded of the importance of thoughtfully completing their homework for Advisory Class. Each assignment is a building block for the next in the college search and application process. The assignments are a stepby-step way of managing the process in an effective way. The syllabus for the College Advisory classes can be found on the Student Portal. There is a homework assignment that must be completed for each class and each one will receive a grade. You can view your son’s progress by accessing My Backpack through the Portal. An important reminder as the semester progresses: GPA and rigor of curriculum are the two top criteria for admission to college. Spring is the time for renewed motivation and best effort. It is also time to think about asking two teachers, preferably from junior year, to consider writing letters of recommendation for senior year college applications. Remember that writing letters of recommendation is very time-consuming and is a voluntary service on the part of our faculty.

College Fairs Mark your calendars! Villanova University will host the Main Line College Fair on Tuesday, May 1, 2012 from 6:30 to 9:00 pm at the Pavilion on the Villanova Campus. Admission counselors from over three hundred colleges and universities will be present to discuss entrance requirements, curriculum offerings, and financial aid. The event will provide students and their families the opportunity to gather information about colleges and universities from across the country. Check the calendar on our webpage for a list of college fairs, open houses, and information nights.

College Visits Visits to college campuses are most important in finding the right match. Make every effort to visit campuses while classes are in session to get a realistic view of campus life. Make a reservation online through the college admission websites or call the admissions office. Remember to email the Admissions Office after the tour and interview.

Summer Service Programs A list of academic and community service summer programs for sophomores and juniors is available on our College Counseling website, www.lschs.org/college at the Pre-College Summer Programs link. Many of these programs take place on college campuses locally, nationally, and internationally.

SENIORS All seniors who receive any scholarship or grant awards from any college (whether or not they intend to enroll) must bring a copy of the award letter to the College Counseling Center as soon as it is received. In order for a student’s name to appear in the Graduation Program as a scholarship recipient, he must follow this procedure. Be prepared to register at ONE college by that college’s registration deadline. May 1, 2012 is the date viewed by the collegiate community as the universal reply date for regular admission. You will be required to send an admission and/or housing deposit to confirm your enrollment intentions. Be aware of any possible state school requests for deposits earlier than the May 1st deadline. Under no circumstances should you enroll at more than one college. After the student has committed to a college he should write a letter informing all other colleges of his intention to enroll elsewhere. This is an obligation to be taken seriously. It enables other students who may be “wait listed” to move up on that list. Students who are waitlisted who wish to still be considered for admission should speak with their college counselor and email or send the local college representative for La Salle College High School a one page letter letting him know how strongly they wish to attend that particular college. However, something to consider is a recent quote from a college admissions officer who talks about colleges not ranking students on their waitlists. Instead, decisions about who will rise to the top are often a function of what admissions offices perceive as “deficiencies” in their upcoming freshman class. There might be, for example, a surplus of aspiring engineers and not enough potential English majors, or too few students from Florida, or there might be an unexpected shortage of oboe players.

Speech and Debate Recognized at State Finals as Ten Students Place in Top 12 of Events The Speech and Debate Team from La Salle College High School was recognized with the Jeanne M. Lutz Award for Continued Excellence in Forensics at the 2012 Pennsylvania High School Speech League (PHSSL) State Finals. Ten students from La Salle placed in the top 12 of their events. Over 650 students from across Pennsylvania competed at the tournament which was held at Susquehanna University from March 23-24, 2012.

The team of Joseph Vasoli ‘12, Jack Grogan ’15, and Matt Coughlin ’15 advanced to the Final Round in Parliamentary Debate and placed second in the State on a 3-2 decision. Daniel Spinelli ’14 advanced to the Final Round in Radio Announcing (the largest event at the tournament) and placed third in the State.

The team of Frank Worthington ’12 and Bill Toner ‘12 advanced to the Quarterfinal Round in Public Forum Debate, finishing 6th in the State. Robert Gormisky ’13 advanced to the Quarterfinal Round in Lincoln Douglas Debate, finishing between 5th and 8th in the State. The team of James Princivalle ’13 and David Del Grasso ’15 advanced to the Semifinal Round in Duo Interpretation of Literature, finishing 8th in the State. Reid Worster ’14 advanced to the Semifinal Round in Extemporaneous Commentary, finishing 9th in the State.

Final transcripts will be sent by the College Counseling Office to the colleges where your sons are enrolling so it is important that seniors notify Mrs. O’Connell of their final choice. On the subject of final grades, check out “Colleges Don’t Like Senior Slump in High School” under Links and Resources at www.lschs.org/college We encourage the seniors to inform teachers about their college plans and to thank them for writing letters of recommendation on their behalf.

Field Day The school’s 8th Annual Field Day is scheduled for Friday, April 20, 2012. For the past seven years this event has been a huge success due to the planning and execution done by the Student Council. The enthusiasm of the faculty, staff and the student body for the day has been great. Students are able to “compete” in games of knowledge, dexterity, and athleticism while interacting with faculty and staff that run the events and/or accompany the students around the campus. Two favorites of the students have been the Ultimate Frisbee and Dodge Ball – competitions sure to return again this year. The day will end with a final assembly which will feature a tug-of-war between homerooms on each level and the walk/run on the track in memory of deceased faculty members Fran Johnson (2004) and Mary Jo Smith (2010). It should be another great day for the entire La Salle community!

Stubbornness and Persistence – Different Sides of the Same Coin by Jo Ann Cohen, PhD

Things were never easy for Thomas Edison. When he was in third grade his learning disability was so significant that his teacher would belittle him. His horrified mother removed him from the school and taught him at home. When Edison invented the light bulb, he was interviewed by a young reporter who boldly asked, “Mr. Edison do you feel a failure? Don’t you think it is time you gave up?” Perplexed, Edison replied, “Young man, why would I feel like a failure? And why would I ever give up? I now know definitively over 9,000 ways that an electric light bulb will not work. Success is almost in my grasp.” More than 1,000 attempts later, Edison invented the light bulb. Edison’s failures taught him what didn’t work, and by accumulating knowledge, Edison learned what he needed to do in order to be successful. Where do we find that kind of perseverance in our modern world? One day in the 1990’s the Department of Public Welfare called my psychology office to ask if I would evaluate a woman who escaped from Afghanistan, a country in the mist of civil war. I had to fill out some forms and decide whether Fatima needed treatment. A week later, Fatima appeared in my waiting room wearing a long, wide skirt. She was accompanied by three young children and an interpreter. The interpreter told me the children would have to come with us into the treatment room. She said the woman wouldn’t leave her children in my secretary’s care or with anyone else. I had no choice but to agree.

and walked barefoot toward Pakistan. Each day, she would find a place to hide until it was safe to walk again. Fatima wrapped her feet in cloth to keep them warm and to try to protect them from the sharp stones that cut her soles as she hurried along the way. The children clung to her legs and she dragged them toward safety. She was so intent on protecting her offspring; she was unaware of how much damage she was doing to her own body. As she told her story, she moved her skirt to reveal two misshapen feet. The weight of the children and the mountainous path were difficult to navigate. As she struggled to survive and search for food and water for the children, she broke several bones in her feet. Without medical care, they had become gnarled and calloused. It was unlikely Fatima would ever walk comfortably again or that she would even be able to wear shoes. For weeks, Fatima and her children snuck through the mountains. They crossed into Pakistan and eventually were given refuge in the United States. Fatima was so traumatized that she refused to let the children out of her sight even though she had been safely in the USA for two months. It felt amazing to be so close to someone who had the fortitude to tolerate the pain Fatima endured. Her relentless determination to escape her native country was not so much about saving her own life, but the lives of her offspring. I looked at her with awe and compassion. In a land where women were considered inferior and where even today they are kept mostly illiterate, Fatima had beaten the odds.

As we walked back toward the therapy room, I realized Like Edison, Fatima had followed one simple rule: Fatima was shoeless. She held tightly to her children’s Never Give Up. hands and winced with each step. We took our places in the room, and Fatima began her story. She told me through her interpreter that soldiers invaded her village. She had already gone to the fields with her children. They killed everyone in the tiny community and went through the area killing everyone in their path, particularly children. Fatima headed toward the mountains where she struggled to hide. Each night Fatima hid her children beneath her skirt

A parent with similar concerns may refer his or her son to the LIGHTS Team. A friend or classmate who is worried about a certain student may refer him to the LIGHTS Team for assistance. A student may refer himself to the LIGHTS Team for assistance.

The LIGHTS Team The LIGHTS Team, a Student Assistance Program (SAP), assists La Salle students as well as the families of those students, who face behavioral and/or academic difficulties. The team is comprised of specially-trained school faculty and staff, who meet weekly to discuss the needs of referred students.

All information about referred students is kept strictly confidential.

The LIGHTS Team works to identify problems and seek out solutions. The LIGHTS Team does not diagnose or treat students. The LIGHTS team seeks out and collates information about referred students from a variety of sources, including parents, teachers, coaches, and the school nurse, and uses the information to determine suitable strategies for helping the students.

Involvement makes a real difference!

Encourage your son to read often.

Study after study has shown that your involvement in your son’s education has a huge effect, from preschool through high school – and beyond! Working with the school shows your son that:

If you want a teen to read well, then you have to encourage him to read a lot. It’s just as simple as that.

• Education is important to you. • You support the efforts his school makes. • You want to make the school a great place to be. After all, your son spends almost as much time at school as he does at home. As the year winds down, make sure your involvement doesn’t slack off. Here’s how: • Continue to keep an eye on your son’s progress. • Encourage your son to get help before the final exam if his grades start to slip. • Try to attend a meeting of one or both of the parent organizations. Your continued involvement really does make a difference! Reprinted with permission from the April issue of Parents Still Make The Difference!® (High School Edition). Reading, like anything else, is a skill – and it gets better with practice, but today’s teens often don’t (or won’t) take the time to practice their reading skills. Here are ways to encourage your teen to read more so that he also reads better: Focus on quantity, not quality. Sure, it would be great if he wanted to read all the Greek myths, but if it’s the latest story about one of his favorite baseball players instead, don’t worry. Keep lots of reading material handy. Get magazines, comic books or how-to books on things that interest him. Cut out an article you think he might enjoy. Give it to him and then discuss it with him later or read a book he’s reading and then talk about it. Try nonfiction. Some boys just don’t enjoy reading fiction, so look for nonfiction articles on topics that might interest him – anything from outer space to outdoor activities. Try humor. Boys enjoy reading things that are funny. Their sense of humor may not be the same as yours, but if they are motivated to keep reading, humor can be a great thing! Should you be “friends” with your son online?

Teenagers have a lot of responsibilities on their plates! It’s important to talk to your son about being responsible.

According to the Pew Internet Project, more than half of all teens use social networking sites. Answer yes or no to the following questions to find out if your son is safe online: 1. Do you know if your son is a member of a social network? (If you don’t, try a Google search of your son’s name.)

Part of being responsible is fulfilling all of your commitments. Another part is being able to say no when you absolutely can’t handle anything else.

2. Have you learned about the privacy settings on social networks? Help your son decide what parts of the information he shares online should be made public. 3. Have you reminded your son to be careful about what images he puts online? A picture on the Internet never goes away. 4. Have you told your son that if he isn’t friends with a person in the “real world,” he shouldn’t be friends with him online? 5. Do you have rules about using social networking sites? How well are you doing? Mostly yes answers mean you are protecting your son online. For no answers, try those ideas in the quiz. Teach your son the responsibility of saying “no”. Get good grades. Go to practice. Don’t miss that meeting. Go to work. Spend time with your friends. Spend time with your family. And don’t forget about your chores!

Teens often think that taking on as many commitments as possible is a great way to prove that they are responsible; however, in reality, they end up overloading themselves and not giving their all in any activity. They may be doing a lot of things, but probably aren’t doing any of them really well. Responsibility isn’t just about showing up for a commitment – it’s also doing your job to the best of your ability. If this sounds like your son, sit down with him and make a list of all of his responsibilities, then work together to rank the items. Put things he “must do” at the top, and things he “doesn’t really need to do” at the bottom. Encourage him to star or highlight his favorite activities. Over the summer, when your son has more free time, he can think about which activities he’d like to eliminate next year. Help him realize that sometimes saying, “I’m sorry, I just don’t have time to help you with that,” is the most responsible act after all. Just make sure he realizes this doesn’t apply to his chores! Mission Statement

Upcoming Calendar of Events

To provide financial assistance and support for the continuing education of LaSalle College High School students who have lost a primary wage earning parent, through Fundraising events that help connect Fathers and Sons.

Wednesday, March 28, 2012 Sophomore Branch Out Day 8:00 am Auditorium

The mission statement above is a simple reminder to me of the reason our group exists. The last five words are the fun part of what I get to be involved with every month. As our boys grow older and develop their own sense of self, we as parents are presented with fewer and fewer opportunities to spend time together. As the parent of a current junior, it occurs to me I might not be the only one with Harry Chapin’s “Cats in the Cradle” lyrics whispering in my ear. A great example of the Men of La Salle’s ongoing efforts to encourage father/son time together happened on March 4, 2012 with our bowling event at Facenda Whitaker lanes in East Norriton. We had nearly one hundred fathers, sons and other family members participate and it all added up to a great time for all. With food, friends, fun, prizes and a little competition to make the car ride home full of laughs, everyone enjoyed time together. As always, I encourage you to become involved with the Men of La Salle. We’re proud of the effects we have on those needing help and glad for the fun and fellowship our service and social events provide for both fathers and sons together. If you have any questions about the Men of La Salle in general or getting involved in one of the events below, please email me at mol@lschs.org. Stay well,

Saint Vincent’s Soup Kitchen Every weekend through the end of the school year, the Men of La Salle continue our service to those less fortunate in our community, by helping to prepare and serve meals at St. Vincent’s. The Soup Kitchen is located at 109 East Price Street, in the Germantown section of Philadelphia. This is a great opportunity for fathers and sons to spend some time together in service to the needy in our community, and strengthen the bond of father and son at the same time. We need volunteers to prepare food every Saturday and Sunday from 9:30 to 11:30 am, and to serve food the last Sunday of each month between 12:30 and 2:30 pm. No experience is necessary – just a desire to spend some time together and help others. Please go online to the Men of La Salle Saint Vincent’s volunteer info page at http://www.lschs.org/page.cfm?p=656 and signup and make a difference.

Sunday, April 29, 2012 Experience a great day of baseball with La Salle dads and your son. The annual trip to Baltimore is sure to be a great experience for you and your son. La Salle Collaborates with Microsoft to Deploy Windows Server 8 Prior to Public Beta Release The La Salle College High School Office of Information Technology worked with Microsoft to deploy and validate Windows Server “8” prior to the public beta release of the product on February 29, 2012. La Salle is one of two global academic institutions participating in the Windows Server “8” Microsoft Technology Adoption Program (TAP), which is mostly comprised of larger companies and government agencies around the world. Windows Server “8” has been deployed in the production environment at La Salle College High School since October 2011. La Salle was the first organization in the world to use Hyper-V Replication across the Atlantic Ocean, demonstrating some of the product’s disaster recovery capabilities. In addition, La Salle was the first organization to fully deploy four Windows “8” domain controllers and to clone domain controllers in a production environment. La Salle employees and students worked with Microsoft under a non-disclosure agreement to provide feedback and suggestions to the principal product managers at Microsoft regarding issues and enhancements for this new cloudoptimized server operating system, a flagship enterprise product for the company. Peter R. Sigmund, Chief Information Officer of La Salle College High School and a 1985 graduate, says that “Microsoft TAP chose to partner with us because of the success of the Microsoft IT Academy here at La Salle and the distinctive Student Lab Manager team.” La Salle teaches official Microsoft IT Academy courses which culminate in students taking Microsoft certification exams proctored on La Salle’s campus through CertiPort.

In 2011, seventy five students passed the fundamental Microsoft Technology Associate (MTA) exams and ten students passed the more advanced Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS) exams. The Student Lab Manager team is a unique extra-curricular, experiential learning program which compliments curricular and certification opportunities for students at La Salle. Members of the La Salle Student Lab Manager team, work with the Office of Information Technology staff on managing the school’s network, which features 30 servers and 1600 users. Features like Hyper-V replica have changed the way that the Office of Information Technology deals with the school’s IT disaster recovery plan. This new feature maintains a fully functional and to the minute copy of La Salle’s critical systems in a secure off site (and in this case transatlantic) facility. This type of innovative system is an example of how La Salle strives to stay ahead of the technological curve utilizing the latest Microsoft technologies. Mike Schutz, senior director in Microsoft Server and Tools Business, says, “Input and testing from our TAP partners is invaluable and helps us deliver products that exceed our customers’ expectations. Windows Server is used by hundreds of thousands of organizations around the world and we thank the students and staff of La Salle for their participation and their contribution to the next generation of this product.”

Pennsylvania State Champions 2012

Making A Splash

The Cup Runneth Over

The La Salle College High School Swim Team won the school’s first ever PIAA AAA State Championship on Thursday, March 15, 2012 at Bucknell University’s Kinney Natatorium. The Explorers finished with 323.5 points, 113.5 more points than second place and defending state champions, Hershey High School.

On Sunday, March 25, 2012, the La Salle College High School Hockey Team defeated Bethel Park High School by a score of 6-2 to capture the Pennsylvania State Championship. The game, which was played at the Robert Morris University Island Sports Center in Pittsburgh, saw five different Explorers find the back of the net. Junior Andrew Grajewski scored twice and Andrew Romano, Matt Williams, Nick Master, and Brett Supinski each scored once. Senior goalie Andrew King stopped 25 of the 27 shots that he faced.

La Salle swept all three relay races, including setting a PA State Record on Wednesday in the 200 yard medley relay. Joseph Maginnis, Michael McBryan, Luke Maguire and Gregory Rogers posted a time of 1 minute, 31.83 seconds, breaking the Explorers’ mark set a year ago. In the 200 freestyle relay, La Salle posted the fastest time in the trials with a 1:23.62. The Explorers then came back in the championship final with another gold medal when Eric Schultz, Christopher Szekeley, Rogers and Sean Regan combined for a time of 1:22.91. In the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay, the squad of Eric Schultz, Joseph Maginnis, Sean Regan, and Christopher Szekely won the gold with a time of 3:02:74, over three seconds faster than the other top 5 finishers. In addition to winning the school’s first PIAA State Championship, the squad also picked up its 24th consecutive Catholic League Championship as well as the District 12 (City) Championship.

The Explorers avenged a loss in last year’s State Championship Game and captured their third State title in the last five years. La Salle won consecutive championships in 2008 and 2009. La Salle, which finished the season with a record of 252, was undefeated this against teams from Pennsylvania. They defeated Holy Ghost Prep 6-3 on Wednesday, March 14, 2012 to win their 2nd consecutive Flyers Cup Championship and fourth title in the past five seasons. In the game, the Explorers scored five second period goals to take a 5-0 lead after two periods. Tim Feoli led the offense with two goals, and goalie Nick DeSimone added 23 saves between the pipes. The championship was La Salle’s sixth Flyer’s Cup.
