March 2012 Volume Twenty-One Number 7

Dear Parents and Guardians, March can be a tricky month with a mixture of both winter and spring. As of this writing, we’ve had neither a snow day nor a late opening due to weather – I can assure you that our boys are eager for either. The best of skeptics will have to admit that this winter can’t be called normal. There is one thing that will likely happen – March will usher in the winds. A certain excitement has been in the air with the announcement of the school’s new administrative team. The appointment of Brother James Butler, FSC, a longtime member of our Board of Trustees, has been greeted with enthusiasm

The beginning of March will see La Salle hosting perspective members of the Class of 2017 as the 7th Grade Practice Test will be administered on March 3, 2012. Over 400 students will sit for this test in an effort to get some idea of what the future might hold and how they might better prepare for independent schooling. It is also the perfect opportunity for me to take a peek into our future. The Alumni Association has chosen to induct our own Brother James Rieck, FSC ’57, better known to our students as “Brother Kodak”, into the Hall of Fame. At the same time they will induct Mr. Frank Cervone ’75, a nationally renowned advocate

I feel La Salle is very blessed to have attracted such talent to our Caring Community. from all who know of his dedication to La Salle over the years. Brother James has a most impressive background in education both within and outside the Lasallian community. Tireless energy might best describe him. Brother will assume his new responsibility in July of 2013 and will join us here in Wyndmoor early in 2013. Mr. Michael O’Toole ’68, our new Principal, will assume his responsibilities on July 1, 2012 when Mr. Marchese steps down due to health reasons. We wish Mr. O’Toole every success and look forward to his initiatives that will help shape and carry La Salle well into the future. Mr. O’Toole returns to La Salle after seven years as Principal at Holy Ghost Preparatory School and has an equally impressive background in school administration. Please join me in welcoming both of these men and wishing our new administration every success. You should also know that many meetings have surrounded the implementation of our International Student Program, which will begin in September. Every Friday afternoon, those responsible for this program have been meeting and developing programs for faculty/staff, the student body, and finally, our parents and alums. In the coming months, you will be hearing more about this program. For the moment, allow me to introduce Mrs. Nary Smith, a member of our World Language Department, who will be serving as coordinator. Mrs. Smith’s background in various Asian cultures made her the ideal candidate to lead this program. Please review the enclosed column on this effort. It is my hope that this program will help La Salle prepare students for careers in a world that is truly global. This opportunity will help to position them as they look for careers and leadership roles in the international job market.

for children’s rights. The timing of this honor could not be more perfect for both our Nation and Church. The Alumni Association will likewise honor two members for their faithful service over the years when the Honorable William Benz, Esq. ’72 and Mr. Edward Feeny ’62 receive the William J. Whelan ’55 Alumni Service Award. Please join me in congratulating these four alums on this special honor. I would like to draw your attention to a Parent/ Son program sponsored jointly by Mount Saint Joseph’s Academy, Gwyneed Mercy Academy and La Salle – SpeakUp – which which will be held at Gwynedd Mercy Academy on March 8, 2012 beginning at 6:30 pm. Mrs. Maher serves as our contact for this program. I invite you to consider this opportunity to dialogue with your son and his peers. March places us in the midst of the Lenten season. May these days provide some time to personally reflect upon the significance of salvation and the events in history that led up to Easter and Christ’s rising from the dead. I hope that you might enjoy some quiet moments that allow for personal preparation for Easter. Our boys will participate in a number of events that will help them to focus their attention on Holy Week and Easter. Sincerely yours,

Brother Richard Kestler, FSC ’60 President

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Every month has its own unique character, but March always strikes me as being a bit more intimidating than any of the other eleven. Just by its name (especially since it is capitalized), March seems to command us to accomplish something special. Well, without unwittingly placing a jinx on this new month it seems like February got the scoop this time.

This past month, we were all introduced to the next President and Principal of La Salle College High School. While Mr. Michael O’Toole (as Principal) and Brother James Butler (as President) will begin their tenure a full year apart, their success and identity will be inextricably joined once they form their new leadership team in July 2013. Each of these men brings a passion for education, a love for working with students, and an unwavering commitment to perpetuating our Lasallian mission and vision. Although they won’t have a role or presence on our campus in the near term, both of them are already preparing themselves for the opportunities and challenges that await them. Without a doubt, the most significant challenge they will initially overcome will be filling the shoes of Mr. Joseph Marchese and, a year later, of Brother Richard Kestler, FSC ’60. Seven years ago at this same time, our community was beginning to learn about two men (one a familiar Christian Brother and the other an unknown administrator with a non-Lasallian background) who would soon assume responsibility and quickly become the spiritual and

academic leaders of our great school. La Salle has come a long way since then and once again we are looking forward to welcoming our next administrative leadership team. In the coming months we will, rightfully, honor Mr. Marchese for his tremendous leadership and contribution to La Salle. Likewise this time next year we will have the chance to do the same for Brother Richard. But for now, let us reflect on the example of leadership and cooperation that these two men have given to us, to our students, and to the La Salle community at large. As we can all attest, a good Catholic education is a gift; like generations of parents throughout our school’s history, it is an extravagant gift that you give to your sons every day they come to school here at La Salle. This is a gift that all those who lend financial support throughout the year make a reality by supplementing tuition income to meet the cost of educating every student. This is a gift that we entrust to our two Chief Administrators. Look at our accomplishments over the past seven years or personally experience La Salle today and it is clear that Brother Richard and Joe Marchese have used and invested this gift wisely. Thanks to the hard work and passion of the parents, alumni, faculty, staff, administrators, and trustees who served on the two search committees, I can share my confidence that the new administrative leadership will pick up where the current team leaves off and take La Salle to even greater heights. Sincere best wishes and appreciation,

Benjamin J. Ventresca, Jr. ’70 Chairman of the Board of Trustees

International Students Program by Nary Smith Coordinator of International Students Program

The International Students Program at La Salle College High School offers an opportunity for international students to gain access to an excellent education, by means of extensive support services and cultural experiences in and around Philadelphia. The program of studies offered seeks to equip college-bound students with a foundation for the pursuit of academic excellence, while giving them a value-centered and ethically moral foundation. The International Students program was founded and created with a clear vision – to make a positive difference in the lives of individual students as they further develop their potential in a rapidly changing complex world. With that in mind, the mission is to design and implement initiatives, programs, activities, and services that will engage the entire school community to help students attain their educational, personal, and career goals in a diverse and nurturing community. To qualify for admission to the International Program, students must undergo a rigorous screening process and have an above average academic ability as well as a strong knowledge and understanding of the English language. Most of the students will come from Korea, China, and other parts of Asia. Students will also come from European countries. Once accepted, all international students will arrive at La Salle College High School two weeks before the opening of school to participate in an orientation program, which will assist with their transition from home to an American high school. During this time, they will live with their host families, meet students from the La Salle community who will mentor them, receive an assessment of their English language skills, take classes on how to succeed in an American classroom, and participate in various athletic activities. International students are responsible for all costs associated with their time and education here at La Salle College High School including tuition, transportation, and activity fees as well as personal costs, such as room and board, living expenses, English tutoring fees, and home campus fees. There are a number of international students who are currently part of the La Salle community. Several more will start in September with the intention of adding more each year.

2012-2013 Registration/ Course Selection Each family should have received a registration letter in January from Academic Affairs announcing that course selection for the 2012-2013 school year is about to begin. This letter, by design, came on the heels of Brother Richard Kestler’s annual tuition letter. As explained in the mailing, this year’s registration requires a $300 annual fee (with $250 going toward a student’s next year’s tuition). A student will not be allowed to participate in the course selection process unless this financial obligation is complete. If a student does not plan on returning to La Salle for this September, this too needs be made known at this time. Each student will spend February deciding what courses best meet his wants and needs. He will then spend time in March evaluating this selection with his counselor(s). As soon as a student’s selections are approved by their appropriate counselor, a “parent sign-off sheet” will show up in your son’s Naviance account under “course requests”. This form will serve as a verification of his requests for next year. Each student, along with his parents, should review this document to make sure that the courses listed are those he needs and/or requested for next year. If there are any problems or errors, the student should see his counselor as soon as possible. Please pay close attention to your son’s selections relative to strength of schedule and course load. An unfortunate recent trend noticed by Academic Affairs and counselors includes students taking on way more than they can handle. Please work with your son on developing an understanding of his personal limits and overall realistic expectations. The selection process ends school wide on Wednesday, April 4, 2012. Students and/or parents have until Monday, April 16, 2012 to request changes by working through the appropriate teacher and/or counselor. It is during the month of May that resources are secured, the school’s master schedule is created, and the rostering of students for classes begins. Please help us meet these deadlines as it is absolutely necessary for students to use the resources allotted during these course selection weeks.

If you have questions or concerns about placements in World Language (Mrs. Diccicco), Math (Mr. Quinn), Science (Mr. Cipolla), or Social Studies (Mr. Miller), please contact the appropriate department chair in these areas. Other, more specific concerns in placement should be forwarded to the appropriate department chairperson or A.P. teacher.

facility with grammar that most other high school students are hard pressed to attain. It is commonly noted that acquiring this competence with grammar stretches and strengthens the mind. As some like to put the matter, learning Latin and Greek are to the mind what physical education is to the body. Most children even find these languages fun.

The scheduling of students at La Salle takes months to complete and is an arduous task since we are attempting to build individualized rosters for nearly 1,100 students. Thus, once a roster is complete and the school year begins, that is the student’s roster. We are unable and cannot honor requests for specific teachers, lunch periods, or early dismissals (unless supported in advance by compelling educational reasons). Remember that the start of school is not the time to create or recreate a roster – we simply do not have the manpower to schedule our students at their leisure. Your support of our efforts here is always greatly appreciated.

By studying Latin and Greek students also gain valuable insight into the achievements of the Roman and Greek worlds (sculpture, architecture, sport, religious and political life, etc.). According to the National Committee for Latin and Greek, the study of Latin and/ or Greek can also help student performance on college entrance exams. For example, high school students with two or more years of Latin typically score 140-160 points higher on the SAT than their Latin-less peers. The College Board (the publishers of the SAT) found that students with a background in Latin came in with higher scores in critical reading skills than students with a background in any other language.

Graduation

Students at La Salle have the option to take one, two, or three years of Latin, and one of Greek. They may take Latin in their sophomore, junior, or senior year, but if they take Latin as a sophomore, they give themselves a better chance to continue into higher levels. Latin I covers the foundations of the language, Latin II a more advanced study in grammar and vocabulary, and Latin III a chance to read Roman authors. Greek may also be taken in the sophomore, junior, or senior year. This year we have an AP class which is new and very exciting. The class is reading Vergil’s Aeneid, which has been tough but fun.

As is the custom at La Salle, we would like to know if there are any graduates of the Class of 2012 who have members of the clergy in their families who would like to participate in the Baccalaureate Mass scheduled for Thursday, May 31, 2012 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in the Andorra section of Philadelphia. If you have a family member who is a priest and he would like to concelebrate the Mass at graduation, please contact Mrs. Suzanne Russo (215) 402-4896 by Friday, April27, 2012.

The Importance of Latin and Greek in English Today by Bill Geiger ’72 We teach Latin and classical Greek at La Salle because they provide a terrific educational foundation. More than fifty percent of English vocabulary is taken from Latin. All the romance languages (Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, etc.) are based on Latin. Moreover, the study of Latin and Greek demand a very high level of competence with grammar. By learning these languages, our students can have a

SENIORS Final Semester – Keep Grades Up Admissions decisions are contingent on the successful completion of all course work. Admissions officers reserve the right to question poor second semester performance and, in some cases, to reverse an admissions decision that has already been made. We have examples of students whose grades dropped second semester resulting in their receiving letters from the college or university they planned to attend informing them their acceptance will now be reconsidered.

Return Reward Letters In March or April, your son should begin receiving merit and need based grant awards and financial aid packages from the colleges to which he applied. After he compares award letters, he should pick which college he wants to attend and return the signed award letter to the chosen college. Pay close attention to deadlines for accepting the award package. Deadlines are usually within two weeks after receiving the award letter. If he misses a deadline, he may risk losing a scholarship, grant, or loan assistance.

Communicate With Faculty and the College Counseling Department Please encourage your son to thank the teachers who may have written letters of recommendation on his behalf. Also, please remember to bring copies of all college acceptance and scholarship letters to Mrs. O’Connell in the College Counseling Center.

Decline Admission Offers To Other Colleges After your son has chosen and committed to a college, he should write a note declining admission to colleges where he has been accepted but will not be attending. This will allow students on a wait list to be accepted and awarded the aid previously held for your son.

Submit Deposit and Housing Application Once your son knows which college he wants to attend, he can submit a housing application and deposit (if he will be living on campus). He needs to do this as soon as possible because most rooms are assigned on a first-come first-serve basis. The National Reply Date is May 1, 2012. Each year some seniors have a difficult time making up their minds about which college to enroll in after they have been accepted. Students may not send end deposits to more than one college. This is called “double depositing” and is an unethical practice. Should the colleges involved determine that a student has “double deposited” your son’s admission may be jeopardized. This practice is unfair to other applicants as the “double depositor” is taking up

a spot that could go to another student, who will instead be wait-listed or turned down. It is an acceptable practice to deposit at one college and maintain your name on a wait list at another; however, indicating to two colleges that you will be attending by sending deposits to both should not be considered.

NCAA Students who are planning to participate in Division I or II athletics in college must complete the online NCAA Clearinghouse Eligibility form and request that a transcript be sent. See Mrs. O’Connell in the College Counseling Office. Transcripts will be sent to the NCAA upon request and again after graduation. The Guide for the College Bound Student Athlete and the Eligibility Quick Reference Sheet are useful tools in navigating the process.

JUNIORS By the end of this semester your son will have met in class and in person at least twelve times with a college counselor. He will be offered information and support. His level of engagement will affect the outcome of the process. The College Counselors look forward to working with you and your sons during this important transition time in their lives. The class is divided alphabetically by student’s last name: Brother William DiPasquale, FSC A-G Mr. Gerard Brett H-N Mrs. Mary Kay Mullen

O-Z

The syllabus for the College Advisory classes can be found on the Student Portal. There is a homework assignment for each class that must be completed on a weekly basis and each will receive a grade. The homework assignments are the step-by-step way of managing the college search and application process in an effective way. Homework grades are posted on My BackPack. Since many admission decisions will be based on the junior year GPA, we suggest that students take their academic responsibilities most seriously. While participation in activities is a factor used to tip the scales in the admission process, primary focus is on the student’s GPA. Pleases take advantage of test preparation module on Naviance. Short sample tests of the SAT and ACT can be taken to determine which of these two formats is best suited to each student. Full length practice tests and tutorial packets are available at this site. Registration deadlines and test dates for each test are available on our webpage. SAT/ACT results need to be sent by the student from the testing service to the colleges and universities where he will apply.

Laughter, the Perfect Remedy

by Jo Ann Cohen, PhD

A few years ago, I put new floors in my home. For a couple of weeks, I brought my two small dogs to my psychology practice. Patrick and Annie, two cockapoos, were a hit with my patients. Once the floors were in, I left the dogs at home, but my patients demanded they come back. The dogs allowed them to feel more relaxed when they addressed serious issues. Depressed patients found petting them soothing. Children would often talk about difficult subjects if they could play with the dogs later. In the end I gave in, and today Patrick and Annie come regularly to visit. One child who found the dogs enticing was a two year-old girl named Sammy who had been removed from her parents’ care by Child Protective Services. Sammy had been kept in a car seat all her life, and was, therefore, unable to stand, walk or even sit up without support. Sammy’s pediatrician believed her incapability was due to poor muscle tone.

“A clown is like an aspirin, but it works twice as fast.” Groucho Marks Sammy would point to what she wanted, hold her arms open and scream. If no one responded, more piercing shrieks would shatter the air. Her foster mother, Alice, looked at me in horror. In order to entice Sammy to move, Alice and I laid her on a blanket and put her toys slightly out of reach. Sammy stretched for a toy and screamed. When we did not bring her what she wanted, she let out a blood curdling shriek filling every inch of my office with her agony. Alice and I stood in the doorway groaning. What most children experience as delightful investigation, Sammy experienced as torture. My secretary opened her door to see what was going on allowing Patrick and Annie to escape. Sammy’s screams were more than Patrick could endure. He rushed into the therapy room to rescue her. Finding nothing to rescue her from, Patrick gently licked Sammy’s tears. Sammy, intent on getting her toys, did not want her tears interrupted. She snarled at Patrick and began her ear piercing screams again. Patrick licked Sammy’s tears once more, and she sneered back. Alice and I burst into laughter. Patrick continued to try to sooth Sammy’s anguish. He moved a few steps back and wined. Sammy, now distracted from her toys, tried to move toward Patrick. She used her little arms to drag her tiny body forward, and, for what was probably the first time, experienced her own locomotion. Surprised by what she felt, Sammy’s eyes lit up. She reached toward Patrick, and he put his wet nose under her hand demanding to be petted. Sammy giggled. Patrick had broken the tension and accomplished the impossible. Not only had Sammy moved her body, Patrick’s antics had completely uplifted everyone’s spirit. Psychologists know that laughter is a powerful tool for releasing tension. It enhances oxygen intake, increases heart rate, stimulates circulation, and accelerates the release of endorphins creating a sense of relief. Happiness promotes positive thoughts which release neuropeptides. These improve the immune response. Humor releases endorphins which ease pain. Psychologically laughter opens our minds to a kaleidoscope of possibilities and allows us to put a problem into perspective. As the months passed, Patrick became a willing and important co-therapist. Sammy would enter the waiting room yelling Patrick’s name. Patrick would rush in, lie on his back and wiggle a hello, sending Sammy into gales of laughter. Slowly Sammy’s physical ability improved. She struggled to chase Patrick as he ran down the halls. Eight months later, Sammy showed no physical effects from being confined. With the help of laughter, Patrick had done the impossible.

Changing Of

The Guard Alum to Assume Academic Helm of La Salle College High School

La Salle College High School President, Brother Richard Kestler, FSC ’60, announced that Michael A. O’Toole ’68 will assume the position of Principal on July 1, 2012, succeeding Joseph L. Marchese, who will be stepping down at the end of the academic year due to health reasons. O’Toole will become the school’s tenth principal. The Board of Trustees has concurred and ratified this appointment. “I am grateful to have a man of such caliber join our administrative team,” says Brother Richard Kestler. The decision concludes a six-month nationwide search that was headed by Benjamin J. Ventresca, Chairman of the school’s Board of Trustees, who directed a committee comprised of faculty, staff, trustees, current parents, and alumni. “I am very appreciative of the efforts of the committee and commend them on the process. Dozens of well-qualified individuals applied for the position and I feel confident that they selected the best person to lead our school,” says Brother Richard Kestler. Michael O’Toole is an educator with more than three decades of professional experience who currently serves as Principal of Holy Ghost Preparatory School in Bensalem, PA. He became Principal in 2005 and, in addition to overseeing school operations, is the academic leader of the all-boys college preparatory school. O’Toole is responsible for multiple initiatives in areas of the curriculum along with initiatives in diversity and parent communications. Prior to joining Holy Ghost Prep, O’Toole spent thirty-one years as an administrator and teacher at La Salle College High School. He served as Vice President from 20002005, where he was responsible for oversight of school communications, admissions, financial aid, and diversity programs. He taught English at the school from 19742005, serving as the Department Chair for eight years. He also directed summer programs, academic technology, and writing programs and served as Chairman of the Steering Committee for the school’s Middle States Accreditation Review in 1996.

O’Toole is a 1968 graduate of La Salle College High School. He holds both an A.B. and M.A. in American Civilization from the University of Pennsylvania. He was a Klingenstein Fellow in Independent School Leadership at Teachers College of Columbia University, where he also received a Masters degree in Education. Additionally, he participated in the inaugural Lasallian Social Justice Institute in the Southwest U.S. in 2004. His professional experience includes twenty-five years as a lecturer and instructor at Pennsylvania State University Abington and Temple University. He has served as a teacher in the Gifted Program at the University of Pennsylvania as well as a reader for the SAT Writing Program. He currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Face to Face, Inc., a human services organization located in the Germantown section of Philadelphia that provides meals, nurse-managed health care, legal and social services, computer training, creative arts studios, and children’s programming. O’Toole is a native of Philadelphia and currently lives in Elkins Park with his wife of thirty-five years, Mary Louise Castaldi. He has two children – Lara and Dan, a 2005 graduate of La Salle College High School. Michael O’Toole is ready to come back to La Salle. “I am honored to rejoin the community of teachers, students, parents, and alumni at one of the best college prep schools anywhere – La Salle College High School. The opportunity to serve as Principal of a school which has meant so much to me is both humbling and gratifying. During the past seven years, I have learned much from the extraordinary excellence and global vision of Holy Ghost Prep and now eagerly look to return to my alma mater, La Salle.”

Brother James L. Butler, FSC to Succeed Brother Richard Kestler, FSC ’60 in the Summer of 2013 La Salle College High School announced the appointment of Brother James L. Butler, FSC as the school’s fourth President, succeeding Brother Richard Kestler, FSC ’60 in the summer of 2013. The decision was made public by Benjamin J. Ventresca, Jr. ’70, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, and concludes a national search among Brothers of the Christian Schools to find a successor to Brother Richard who has served as President since 2005 and announced earlier that he will step down on June 30, 2013 following two successful terms. Brother Dennis Malloy, FSC, Visitor of the District of Eastern North America, concurred with the decision and the Board of Trustees ratified the appointment with a resolution adopted at its meeting on February 8, 2012. Brother James Butler, FSC is an educator with over thirty years of professional experience and currently serves as the Principal of Christian Brothers Academy (CBA), a Lasallian college preparatory school located in Lincroft, NJ. He became Principal of Christian Brothers Academy in 2008 and, in addition to overseeing school operations, teaches senior English and serves as moderator of the Mothers’ and Fathers’ Clubs. Brother James participated in the recent Project 50 Campaign at Christian Brothers Academy, which led to the construction of new academic facilities consisting of a library and technology center, main office suite, classrooms, and science labs. Though his professional service in education has seen him teaching in the Holy Land and Australia as well as the schools of the former Baltimore and New York provinces of the Christian Brothers, Brother James is no stranger to La Salle College High School. In addition to his recent service to the Board of Trustees, his student teaching was done under the supervision of long-time La Salle faculty member Brother David Rogers, FSC.

Brother James’ administrative experience has been at Hudson Catholic High School as well as Christian Brothers Academy. He served from 2003-2007 as the Auxiliary Visitor and Director of Education for the Baltimore Province of the Christian Brothers and has served as a member of nine governing boards and participated in numerous school reviews and searches, including the selection process which brought both Brother Richard Kestler, FSC and Principal Joseph Marchese to La Salle College High School in 2005. Brother James Butler, FSC is honored and humbled by the opportunity to work at a school he describes as “the epitome of what a Lasallian college preparatory school can and should be” and to follow an administrator as “excellent, influential, and ideal as Brother Richard Kestler, FSC.”

Men of La Salle K E V IN R . C ONNO R ’ 8 2 P R E S I D ENT

While talking with a friend recently, he asked me to explain the purpose of our group and it reminded me of how many boys rely on the efforts of our organization to keep them involved in the La Salle community. The full impact of all we do is reinforced to me at the start of our monthly meetings when we review our mission. Mission Statement To provide financial assistance and support for the continuing education of LaSalle College High School students who have lost a primary wage earning parent, through Fundraising events that help connect Fathers and Sons. What started with my tenure as president last summer with four boys needing tuition assistance has grown recently to seven. During this academic year, our organization is providing full or partial tuition support for these boys, which totals almost $99,000. That’s seven students looking to experience the same joy and benefits of a La salle education. As my conversation ended, it hit me that of all the things that the Men of La Salle do, the most important is to provide those boys who have lost a parent the same opportunity as the rest of their classmates and to build upon their La Salle experience as they continue their academic careers in college. Clearly, we rely on the generous financial support of the entire La Salle community. Additionally, we need the time and commitment of fathers to continue the important mission of our group. I encourage you to become involved. Come to our monthly meetings. Attend one of our Father/ Son events. Get involved! The list of our upcoming events can be found below. I want to thank everyone for a tremendous response to our first ever Comedy Night, which was held on Sunday, February 12, 2012. It was a great way for our group to extend its reach and open up an event for families. Over 270 came out that evening and enjoyed a great sandwich from our friends at McNally’s Tavern in Chestnut Hill and the talents of four hilarious comedians including Joe Conklin. Proceeds from the night will benefit both our mission and as well as the summer service programs of our Campus Ministry. If you have any questions about the Men of La Salle, please email me at mol@lschs.org.

Men of Service by Chris Szekely ’12 and Eric Schultz ’12

Swimming is not by most standards a glorious sport; however, what makes La Salle Swimming so amazing is the camaraderie and the tradition that it upholds. Yes, our days are rigorous. We usually start the day at 4:45 am to go to an early morning practice, sit through several hours of hard classes, begin another two and a half hour practice, drive home and do our homework, relax for a little bit, and then get ready to do it all over again. This is all worth it in the end however, as this is what makes our team so great. Through our many hours of training and tiresome days, we have become closer to each other and have grown as friends and as people. This, combined with everyone’s motivation and great coaching, is also what has allowed us to win twenty-four consecutive Philadelphia Catholic League Championships and finish consistently as one of the top teams in the state and in the country – an impressive feat. One important way that we grow as a team though is not associated with the pool. It is through the very motto on which our school is founded – “Enter to Learn, Leave to Serve” – in which we accomplish this growth. For the past six years we have started a new tradition. Every Christmas, we adopt a needy family to help at the holiday season. Each member of the team donates a small amount of money to the cause and we go out shopping for food and Christmas presents (for the kids of the families). This is followed by a gift-wrapping session in which we get a chance to improve on our less than skillful wrapping abilities. Just before school lets out for Christmas break, the team delivers the gifts and groceries to the family. It is hard to forget the happiness you can bring to someone when you bring in dozens of food items and toys to a small house with almost no food in the fridge, or when you see a kid’s face light up as they see presents being brought in. his is what happened this year when we reached out to a family whose son, Markwan, was struggling with brain cancer. For Markwan, this would probably be his last Christmas. For us these are some of our most memorable and rewarding “swimming career” experiences that we will never forget. It reminds us just how blessed and lucky we are and brings us closer together as a team as we help others in our surrounding community. This, as we have learned, is a big part of what the LaSalle Swimming tradition is all about. Sometimes it is what you do outside of the pool that matters the most. This year’s schedule will again showcase games against some of the best teams in the nation. The team will be returning to the Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD for the second annual Travis Manion-Brendan Looney Memorial Lacrosse Game, which will feature La Salle against DeMatha followed by the Navy against John Hopkins. The game, which benefited the Travis Manion Foundation, is played to honor the memories and contributions of 1st Lt. Travis Manion, USMC ’99 and his close friend LT (SEAL) Brendan Looney, a DeMatha graduate. Manion, a standout lacrosse player and wrestler at La Salle, was killed by a sniper while serving in Iraq on April 29, 2007. Looney was killed in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan on September 25, 2010. Looney and Manion, roommates at the US Naval Academy, were laid to rest side-by-side at Arlington National Cemetery. It will be a special day for all involved. The team will also be participating in the Checking For Cancer Tournament on April 14, 2011 against nationally ranked Saint Augustine Prep as and the Katie Samson Tournament on April 28, 2012. Other big games include Gilman on April 3, 2012, Haverford School on April 12, 2012, and Saint Joseph’s Prep on April 17, 2012.

La Salle College High School – The Belcroft March 2011 22

City of Angels is a musical comedy with music by Cy Coleman, lyrics by David Zippel, and book by Larry Gelbart. The musical weaves together two plots, the “real” world of a writer trying to turn his book into a screenplay, and the “reel” world of the fictional film. City of Angels opened on Broadway at the Virginia Theatre on December 11, 1989 and closed on January 19, 1992. The setting is Hollywood in the late 1940s, with two stories occurring simultaneously – a Hollywood comedy and a detective drama. The real-life scenes are in color and the movie scenes in black and white. Costumes and setting reflect the reality vs. film. Alaura Kingsley, a striking socialite, is ushered into detective Stone’s office by Oolie, his loyal Girl Friday. Alaura hires him to find her step-daughter Mallory Kingsley, a beautiful “bad” girl, who will later turn up in Stone’s office. Stone receives a brutal beating from two thugs and is framed for a murder. As the plot thickens, Stone’s own past comes to haunt him. The relatively simple missing daughter case turns complicated and may end up costing Stone his life. It keeps getting more and more complicated, possibly because the author keeps rewriting it. The author, Stine, is a novelist adapting his novel, City of Angels into a screenplay for movie mogul Buddy Fidler. Buddy, a charismatic and autocratic producer-director, has an immense ego and, although he claims to be a fan of Stine’s work, he continually demands rewrites from the increasingly reluctant Stine. As Stine struggles to keep both his job and his novel’s integrity, his wife Gabby disapproves of his womanizing and leaves for New York on a business trip. Shortly afterwards, he begins an affair with Buddy’s secretary Donna. Gabby discovers this and leaves him. When Stine fulfills Buddy’s request to remove a raciallymotivated plotline from the screenplay, Stone himself grows frustrated with his author’s lack of integrity and berates him for it. Creator and creation have an argument, which Stine wins by typing a scene where the detective is beaten up. Stine flies to New York in an unsuccessful attempt to reconcile with Gabby, earning Buddy’s ire. When he returns, he discovers that Buddy has drastically rewritten the film’s ending to his own satisfaction and given himself a prominent co-writing credit. Stine appears on set for the first day of filming to confront the unrepentant Fidler and discovers, to his shock, that a popular crooner has been cast as his hardboiled detective. With Stone himself at his side, Stine rips up the script and quits. He is about to be beaten by two studio guards, when, in a reversal on their earlier confrontation, Stone aids him by typing a scene allowing Stine to defeat the guards and win back both his wife and his self-respect. Apart from Stine and Stone, the actors portraying the characters in Stine’s movie double as the Hollywood executives and actors Stine encounters.
