From The Hip! The last two summers, I’ve had the honor of captaining the La Salle contingent at War At The Shore. Two years ago, we narrowly defeated our opponents from St. Joseph’s Prep to recapture the coveted Paul Cup. Last summer, we won by an overwhelming margin and successfully defended our title. I am fortunate to have a friend and partner in Michael Donohoe ’79 with the same blood type – blue and gold; yet, as I looked out across the Bay Course, I couldn’t help but notice the overwhelming sense of pride radiating from inside the entire La Salle side. Blue and gold ran through all of their veins, and there was no better place should I be in need of a transfusion. La Salle College High School is incredibly fortunate to have wonderful donors – men (and women) who are quick to provide tremendous financial support. Last year’s Annual Fund raised almost $3 million and helped to fill the critical gap between tuition and our operating budget. Despite recent increases, income from tuition covers less than Christopher Carabello ’82 and Michael Donohoe ’79 75% of the school’s operating budget. at War At The Shore VII in August 2006. The difference is derived primarily from contributions from loyal donors, and without this generosity, La Salle College High School would not be able to provide an exceptional education and superior programs for our students. La Salle is equally fortunate to have donors who are generous with their time. I am amazed each year at LaSale (not a misspelling; rather the name of the school’s auction) by the efforts of our parents to provide an extraordinary event as well as raise a considerable amount of money. The chairpersons and their committees work determinedly to create a night that is truly special and each year manage to raise the bar a little higher – only to have it surpassed the following year. The Mothers’ Club, Men of La Salle, and various booster groups work tirelessly to “support our boys,” while the Alumni Association works just as hard in an effort to effectively support eight decades of Alumni through a mixture of publications, communications, and events throughout the year. As a Past President of the Alumni Association, I can personally attest to the dedication of these men to the mission of La Salle College High School and their ultimate goal of providing need-based financial aid to sons and grandsons of alumni. I have no doubt that the different constituency groups that comprise the La Salle community are responsible for its continuing success. The students, faculty and staff, parents (current and past), and alumni donate time, treasure, and talent to a school for which there is much to be proud. School Pride is at the source of this generosity and I am certain that big-hearted souls will continue to abound in our community. As I closed out our match this past August, one of our opponents turned to Mike and said he was glad that it was over because he couldn’t understand why I didn’t make a mistake. Mike looked over at him and casually responded, “Pride.”

Happenings At La Salle
Tuesday, September 5, 2006 marked the 149th academic year for La Salle College High School, and the school welcomed 265 members of the Class of 2010. Forty-nine members of the freshman class were sons and/or grandsons of Alumni including: (left to right) Shane Pierce, Greg Porter, and Timothy Durkin.
New Faculty and Administration Replacing Brother Charles Lackes in the World Languages Department is Mrs. Rosemary Gedeik. Rosemary taught all levels of Spanish for eighteen years at Mount Saint Joseph Academy. She has also taught at the college level. Rosemary has a Bachelors degree from Universidad Catolica de Puerto Rico, a Masters degree in Secondary Education from St. Joseph’s University, and another Masters degree in Spanish Language and Culture from Universidad de Salamanca in Spain. Joining the faculty in the Mathematics Department are two familiar faces here at La Salle: Mrs. Kelly Minton and Mr. Tom McCaffery ’01. Kelly is the mother of two La Salle students: Thomas ’07 and Kevin ’10. Kelly has a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Penn State University and worked as a substitute teacher at La Salle last year. Tom McCaffery was also at La Salle last year as a Lasallian Volunteer. He graduated from Arcadia University in 2005 with a Bachelors degree in Mathematics. Tom will be teaching part-time in the Math Department. We welcome both Kelly and Tom back this year in their new capacities.
On Tuesday, October 3, 2006, the Class of 2007 participated in La Salle College High School’s annual College Interview Day. The event was held in the school gymnasium, which was attended by 70 admissions representatives from 56 different colleges and universities. The seniors benefitted by getting to know more about schools they may not have had a chance to visit. The admission representatives also benefitted from the opportunity as they were able to learn more about the students and the school behind the applications, transcripts, and profile.
Mr. Robert Johnson will be joining us in Technology/Computer Science. Rob received a Bachelors Degree in Communications in 2002 from La Salle University and taught TV/Mass Media classes at Salesianum High School in Wilmington, DE. Rob will run WEXP, provide technical assistance to the faculty, and teach classes in Digital Multimedia and Internet Applications. Mr. Kevin Rieffel will be taking the place of Mr. Greg Mills in our Science Department. Kevin is member of the Class of 2002 and a recent graduate of Georgetown University. Kevin will teach Physics, Integrated Science, and Astronomy. Also joining the Science Department is Mrs. Milene Donlin. Milene will be picking up some of Mr. Gerry Evans classes in Biology and Integrated Science, while Gerry moves over to the David Center. Milene has a Bachelors degree in Molecular Biology from the University of California, Santa Cruz and is completing a Masters in Biology at Temple University. I am pleased to announce that two Christian Brothers Scholastics will be joining the La Salle community while they pursue higher education at La Salle University. In addition to being new members of the Brothers’ community, both will have part-time teaching responsibilities here at La Salle. Brother Robert Peach, FSC will be teaching in the English Department and Brother Anwar Martinez, FSC will be teaching in the World Languages Department.
On Sunday, September 24, 2006, the Mothers’ Club hosted the annual New Mothers’ Tea in the Auditorium for all Freshman mothers as well as mothers of new students. The day served as an opportunity to welcome new mothers to the La Salle Community and introduce all of the activities and events that take place during the year.
Lastly, we are excited to welcome back Matthew Derrick ’02 as a Lasallian Volunteer. Matt graduated last May from Trinity College with a Bachelors degree in English. Matt will live in the Brothers’ community and do volunteer work in a variety of areas in the La Salle community. Although he is not new to La Salle, Mr. Nick Coggins will be joining the administrative team as our new Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment. Mr. Coggins’ office will be located next to Mr. Dave Diehl in the former Math Resource Center. In addition to overseeing academic technology, Nick will be assisting with the faculty observation and evaluation process, coordinating all of our standardized and AP testing, and continuing in his role as Middle States Coordinator. Please wish Mr. Coggins well in his new role.

The Cross Country Team won its fourth consecutive Catholic League Championship on Sunday, November 5, 2006 at Belmont Plateau. Junior Phil Wood led La Salle’s 32-point victory, winning the overall championship in 16:04 and bettering his time from last year by 1:22. La Salle had a 16:29 team average and topped second place Cardinal O’Hara by 20 points. La Salle placed five runners in the top ten: George Pinchock ’07 (sixth place), Steve Dorsey ’07 (seventh place), Colin Barrett ’07 (eighth place), and Dan Lowry ’08 (10th place). Congratulations to Head Coach Pat Devine and Assistant Coaches Greg Bielecki ’99, Doug Demeter ’93, and Tom Devlin ’00.
The La Salle Forum was awarded the Leading Chapter Award in the Valley Forge District by the National Forensic League. The coveted award, based upon student participation, is the highest honor that the National Forensic League can bestow upon a chapter. Only one school in each district can attain the honor yearly and must wait at least five years before being eligible again for the award. The National Forensic League has 2,700 member schools nationwide and La Salle College High School was one of only 100 schools to receive the award. (left to right): J.C. Wilt ’09, John Sperger ’08, T.J. McCarrick ’08, Antoine Albert ’08, Mike Rajnherc ’08, and Mike McCabe ’08.
On October 17, 2006, the entire Freshman Class, along with 150 Fathers and several faculty/staff members, traveled to twenty sites in the Philadelphia Area for the annual Freshman Branch-Out Day. Together they contributed over 1,600 hours of service to local organizations including Catholic grade schools, foodbanks, nursing homes, and Salvation Army centers. The day ended with reflections from students on the sites they visited and a prayer service in thanksgiving for all that had been done. The theme for the day was beginning the Lasallian journey of faith, service and community.
La Salle College High School presented three performances of the Pulitzer Prize winning comedy, “You Can’t Take It With You.” The play ran from October 20 through 22, 2006 and featured Drew Brehony ’07, Ben Courtney ’07, John DiIulio ’08, Matt Dwyer ’08, Mykk Hoffman ’08, Sean Janda ’10, Maxx Naseef ’07, Drew Needham ’09, Drew Pierce ’07, and Evan Regan-Levine ’07.
The Wall That Heals, a half-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC, was at La Salle College High School from Thursday, October 5, 2006 through Sunday, October 8, 2006. The exhibition featured the dramatic replica – stretching nearly 250 feet in total length – as well as an Information Center and traveling museum displaying memorabilia left at The Wall in Washington. The Wall That Heals exhibition is organized by the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, the organization charged with preserving The Wall in Washington and its vast legacy, as was brought to La Salle College School through the efforts of Gerry Miller, a veteran of the war and a member of our Social Studies Department.

Have you ever driven by La Salle at night and wondered what all of those cars could possibly be doing there at that hour? I have asked myself that question many times as I have passed the school at night. It seems like there is always something going on‌
14 Explorer Autumn 2006
Since the beginning of school this year, there has been at least one meeting scheduled for every night of the week. Most meetings are for specialized parent organizations, where attendance is only a small percentage of the parent population at La Salle. Like what a Penn State home game can do to Happy Valley, events like Back to School Night and Student Council Mixers seem to almost double the population of Wyndmoor. For events like these, it is a bigger challenge finding a parking spot on La Salle’s campus than it is getting a mixer ticket or finding your son’s classroom in St. Michael Hall. Leaving Back to School Night this year just before 10:00pm, I saw that at least half of the parking spots were still occupied. I have since realized that this occurrence is not the exception, but rather the norm.
Each time we pass by the school at night and see cars parked outside, we no longer need to wonder what is going on, but understand simply that in some way the work of St. John Baptist de La Salle is being done. Bill Bailey, who is responsible for locking the school up at night, sees how busy La Salle is on a daily basis. When asked about the school that never sleeps, Bill responded by saying, “I am scheduled to be here every night until 10:00pm. But there are on average at least two nights a week where I am here until 11:00pm because of meetings that run late.” Bill Bailey sees every day what most of us at La Salle don’t even realize; the school is in a constant state of motion. As students are picked up after their practices and meetings after school, the building only hits mid-stride as a myriad of parent groups and committees converge upon the school. In consideration of how many La Salle affiliated organizations there are, it is not difficult to appreciate the nocturnal aspect of the school. Each sport at La Salle has its own parent organization. There are also organizations such as the Men of La Salle, the Mothers’ Club, and the Alumni Association that meet on a regular basis. The La Sale auction committee meets more and more frequently as the big event draws near. Even faculty and board members have been putting in long hours at Middle States meetings that extend late into the evening.
La Salle has not always been so busy at night. In fact, the many late night meetings are a recent phenomenon. Julia Maher, Vice Principal for Student Affairs, has been at La Salle for over twenty-three years. She feels that La Salle is its busiest ever, particularly during evening hours. Mrs. Maher handles room and facility reservations for all La Salle organizations, and she has seen first hand just how much more involved people have become at La Salle. According to Mrs. Maher, the increase in involvement can largely be explained through the mission of the school and St. John Baptist de La Salle. “The school’s mission is to educate the entire student,” Maher says. “Since the school focuses on the academic, spiritual, and physical development of its students, it is no surprise that there are so many organizations whose main function is student support.” Mrs. Maher also believes that the increase in parent involvement and the emergence of parent groups illustrate how a La Salle College High School education is an investment in the young men that involves more than just the school’s own faculty, staff, and administration. “La Salle has adopted a team approach to education, where faculty, coaches, and parents all take part in the formation of these young men.” Mrs. Maher’s outlook on the increased activity and involvement at La Salle echoes the very philosophy of the school, which states that, “La Salle endeavors to create a community in which students, parents, faculty, staff, and administration may share their beliefs, experiences, and values.” (Student Handbook, p. 3) The sharing of beliefs and values is what is taking place at the various meetings that are held at La Salle each evening. Each time we pass by the school at night and see cars parked outside, we no longer need to wonder what is going on, but understand simply that in some way the work of St. John Baptist de La Salle is being done. Nearly every student at La Salle is involved in at least one sport or activity. Parents, if you haven’t already had your meeting, your nighttime visit to campus will be coming soon. And if your meeting happens to run late, don’t worry. Bill Bailey will leave the light on for you.

Report of Annual Giving 2005/2006
16 Explorer Autumn 2006
Dear Friends of La Salle, One of the most rewarding roles as President of La Salle College High School is saying “thank you” to you, the supporters of our mission. It is truly an honor for me to express my appreciation on behalf of our trustees, administration, staff, faculty, and students for your ongoing generosity. Without it, La Salle would not be what it is today. The old cliché, “it takes a village to raise up a child,” is equally true when it comes to supporting a school. I am both honored and humbled by the depth of concern and loyalty that is demonstrated by all those who give their time, energy and financial resources to help ensure that we can continue to carry on the Lasallian tradition of educating the whole person—spiritually, intellectually, socially and physically. Annual gifts from our alumni, support of our athletic programs by our parent booster groups, the dedicated service and involvement of our Mothers’ Club and Men of La Salle —all play an integral part in “touching the hearts and minds” of our diverse student body. Our La Salle community shares in the responsibility of making the time our young men spend at La Salle as meaningful and as valuable as possible, and you have demonstrated that you take that responsibility to heart. As we move closer to the 150th anniversary of La Salle College High School, I believe our Founder, St. John Baptist de La Salle, would be proud of the commitment that we and others who have come before us have made to his teachings. Based on those teachings and with the support of many, La Salle has and continues to graduate men of intellect and accomplishment, men of faith and compassion, men of service and justice, and men of integrity and respect. Thank you again for supporting our boys so they can become our Men of Tomorrow! Sincerely,
Brother Richard Kestler, FSC ’60 President

Dear Friends of La Salle, Last year was a year of transition for La Salle College High School as a new administrative team joined together to lead our school. We welcomed Brother Richard Kestler back to La Salle – this time into the role of President. Joseph Marchese joined us as our new Principal, and Gail Evans was recruited into the newly created position of Vice President of Institutional Advancement. Despite some typical bumps in the road, the transition went extremely well, and I want to congratulate all three of our administrators for all of their hard work and efforts in ensuring that the school ran as smoothly as possible during this year of change. Another transition—creating an Office of Institutional Advancement, similar to the structure within many colleges and universities—allowed us to better coordinate all of the fundraising, alumni and parent relations, and marketing efforts of the school. Under the leadership of the Institutional Advancement Committee, this structure will serve as the cornerstone for our school to embark on the largest capital campaign it has ever conducted. You will be hearing much more about this project in the months ahead as we continue our efforts to raise $25 million to build a new academic wing, renovate existing classroom space and develop three new fields on 31 acres of newly acquire property located at the northeast section of our campus. So far, the results of our campaign efforts have been very encouraging. Through all of these transitions, La Salle alumni, parents and friends continued to support the everyday needs of our school. Over $2.7 million was contributed through annual appeals, grants, parent and booster fundraising activities, and various special events. Annual Fund dollars help to ensure that our school can continue to provide a Christian Brother education to qualified young men, regardless of their ability to pay. Other annual fundraising efforts provide resources to enhance our sports and fine arts programs, underwrite special purchases or projects, and to support the continuing education needs for our faculty and staff. Through the combined efforts of all of these dedicated groups, we are able to accomplish great things on behalf of the young men who attend La Salle.
Al J. Gabriele Chairman Board of Trustees
Our Annual Report to Donors affords us an opportunity to recognize and thank all of the wonderful groups mentioned above for their generous gifts of time, talent and energy. What you do is a labor of love, and all gifts, large or small, are critical to our success as a Catholic, independent college prep school for young men. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, please accept my heartfelt thanks for your thoughtful and generous support. We could not do all that we do without you! Sincerely,
Al J. Gabriele Chairman Board of Trustees

Christopher J. Matthews ’63 According to Chris Matthews, the Christian Brothers are instrumental in transforming young men into leaders. “They are extremely generous with their time and are committed to teaching kids who need a break,” says Matthews. “They are great teachers, but humble, too. And, they are always there for their students yet give them the freedom to make their own decisions. That’s the big difference in a La Salle education.” Matthews believes that a Christian Brothers’ education, which includes a balance of academics, athletics and religious training, helps to prepare students for the real world. Another teacher that Matthews recalls with fondness and great respect is Gerry Tremblay ’53. “He’s the kind of teacher,” says Matthews, “who picks you out and decides that you have potential. That’s the ’hands-on’ experience you get at La Salle. Students blossomed under Gerry’s tutelage. He’s the great teacher.” Matthews also remembers the school to be very dignified. The music and theatre programs were extremely impressive for the times, with the band dressing in naval officer uniforms. “Wearing a coat and tie to school was a big deal to me,” he stated. “Even after leaving La Salle, I continued to dress that way. I feel better like that. It’s the kind of discipline that helps you to become a La Salle Gentleman.” Maintaining economic and ethnic diversity at La Salle is important to Matthews. When attending La Salle, he recalls that kids came from everywhere. He explains, “I think it’s very important to go to a school with kids who are not all upper-middle class or all white and to see that some families have to struggle to send their sons to La Salle. It’s a part of life and helps to keep our values in better perspective.” Matthews’ belief that diversity is what makes a La Salle education unique compelled him to establish a scholarship fund at La Salle. Knowing that a lot of working class families struggle to send their sons to La Salle, he says, “They are the ones I hope I can help. It’s a great school and a great experience, and I want others to have the same opportunity that I did.”

Annual Fund Giving by Class Strong alumni giving represents a fervent loyalty to one’s Alma Mater. James T. McLaughlin ’57 My commitment to La Salle and the Christian Brothers began long before I attended La Salle College High School at 20th and Olney. The Brothers taught at St. Patrick’s School in Center City Philadelphia when my Dad was a student there. He went on to La Salle College High School at Broad & Stiles and maintained lifelong friendships forged in those years. He often spoke of the dedicated teachers and outstanding role models that shaped him as a young man. There was no doubt that, as his son, I too would attend La Salle to benefit from the Christian Brothers’ philosophy. In true La Salle fashion, my mother shared in my experience by becoming a member of the La Salle Mothers’ Club. My whole family was touched by the love and dedication of the Christian Brothers community. So it was that in 1982, when Brother Fred called to ask if I would help to reorganize the Alumni Association, I jumped at the chance. It would allow me the opportunity to support the school and community that had played such a big part in my life and the life of my family. We set a goal to reconnect the alumni with their La Salle experience in order to further the mission to educate all young men, regardless of their ability to pay, in the spirit of St. John Baptist de La Salle. Alumni financial support is critical to achievement of that goal. With the dedicated leadership of the Alumni Board, and outstanding support from Florence Ward and her alumni staff, we were able to reach out to alumni. The response was gratifying. As a result of these efforts, we have been able to make La Salle accessible to many young men whose financial hardship precludes them from even considering it as an option for their high school education. The first of my three sons began his education at La Salle in 1995 and it changed my perspective from alum alone to alum as a parent. I began to realize that the entire La Salle community i.e. faculty, staff, alumni and parents must work together to educate young men in the Christian Brothers’ tradition. During the last 11 years while my boys were attending La Salle, I made it my personal mission to lead by example and to encourage others to be an integral part of their sons’ education at La Salle. I couldn’t ask people to serve without serving or to give without giving. My son, Dennis, will graduate from La Salle in 2007, the 50th anniversary of my own graduation from La Salle. For me personally and for my family, giving back to La Salle has been a legacy of love.

Peitro V. Scola ’92 I grew up in Northeast Philadelphia. My mother worked in the factory of Whitman’s chocolates and my father was a TV repairman. Neither of them had any formal education, but they did have the dream that their children would get an education and be somebody. Unfortunately, they were inexperienced in how to navigate the world of secondary and higher education. Their greatest gift to me was sending me to La Salle College High School. When you approach the school from Cheltenham Avenue and the La Salle sign pops out from the trees and you turn the corner to go up the hill, your life changes. It did not matter who my parents were. It did not matter where I was from. It only mattered that my teachers believed in me, and they made me believe in myself. La Salle taught me to believe, to reach my potential, to realize my dream. I support La Salle because when I went to school, people gave to me. Now it’s my turn to give back. None of us should forget those who need our help. We live in a complicated world, and we need what La Salle offers to its students. Although we may forget this at times, La Salle will always be our home on the hill.

Christopher P. Haley ’86 I graduated from La Salle College High School in 1986, as did one of my three older brothers. I come from a large Irish Catholic family just outside of Philadelphia, and now have two-dozen or so nieces and nephews who are either in or approaching their high school years (several nephews are currently enrolled at La Salle). My experience and family make-up not only contributed to my decision to initially offer financial support, but also compels me to remain involved with a continued time commitment to La Salle. As I reflect on my good fortune – close family and friends, wonderful spouse and lively children (to say the least), I increasingly feel a need to show my appreciation for these wonderful life experiences. A sizable part of these life experiences occurred in educational settings. From first grade through graduate school, approximately one-half of my up-and-about time was spent with my fellow students and teachers. My earliest and still richest schooling experience occurred at La Salle. Though time, distance (as I now live outside Pennsylvania), and life’s progression have crowded my memory, I hold vivid memories of La Salle challenging classes and assignments, various personalities from the Class of 1986, and the highs and lows from multiple extra-curricular activities. All of these contributed to making me who I am today. Over the past two years, I have become more active with La Salle – financially and mentally – for several reasons. The financial contribution I have provided – and will continue to provide – to La Salle reflected these experiences and a level of return, or ’thanks.’ It also represented a desire to enable under-privileged young boys to have the rich experiences I was able to receive and to also allow them to become men of La Salle. The personal time commitment I am making to the La Salle’s new Capital Campaign will keep me involved in the school’s physical and financial progress as it strives to meet and exceed local educational standards. It will also allow me to be a part of La Salle’s mission to continue to shape and graduate top-tier men from the greater Philadelphia area. If these future La Salle men can look back on their experiences at La Salle as fondly as I do, then my commitment today is well worth the effort.

LTC Roderick von Lipsey, USMC (Ret) ’76 Giving back and serving others is an important life lesson that Rod von Lipsey took away from his four years at La Salle. According to von Lipsey, “the La Salle experience is one of preparation. While a student at La Salle, I knew that I was being prepared for something.” He just didn’t know what. He explained, “When the Class of 1976 walked out of La Salle’s front doors that Bicentennial Celebration summer, we knew that the job wasn’t over. We were just beginning something…and that something was to serve.” Rod took La Salle’s motto ’Enter to Learn; Leave to Serve,’ to heart. Upon graduation he entered the U.S. Naval Academy and pursued a military career in service to his country, stating “my personal journey took me into the armed forces as a way of service. One of the things that I thought about at La Salle was, ’what burden was being imposed on me by having this wonderful education, by having this experience?’ Because I knew,” he continue “that every single one of those teachers expected good things from me.” Retiring from the US Marine Corps as a Lieutenant Colonel in 2000, Rod is currently a Vice President at Goldman, Sachs & Company in Washington, DC.

“The greatest legacy of the Christian Brothers and the La Salle experience is being an Explorer. I realize that it was just a mascot. We were the La Salle Explorers, but in reality it setup a lifetime of exploration, a journey that I am still on today. I’m still exploring this world. I’m still intellectually curious and trying to figure out how all of these things fit together. All I know is that my love of exploration comes directly from my educational experience and the environment at La Salle College High School.“ Rod von Lipsey ’76 Class of 1974 13% $10,746 Gerald V. Named Endowments
Signum Fidei Society
La Salle College High School is fortunate to have a growing number of named endowment funds which provide an ongoing stream of income for a variety of programs such as financial aid, academic scholarships, faculty professional development, and other activities. We are grateful to those who contribute to these funds to ensure they live on in perpetuity.
The Signum Fidei Society is a special group of La Salle supporters who have made financial provisions to the school through bequests, charitable trusts, annuities or gifts of life insurance. Through their thoughtful and generous gift planning, they are leaving a legacy to benefit future generations of La Salle students. We are pleased to honor the members of La Salle’s Signum Fidei Society:

Are you over 70? Are you required to take a minimum withdrawal from your IRA? Are your charitable contributions subject to the pesky 2% rule? Do your major assets reside in your IRA?
Pension Protection Act of 2006 A new law presents a wonderful opportunity through 2007 for individuals to utilize their IRA’s creatively to accomplish special philanthropic objectives. It took nearly a decade, but Congress has finally enacted legislation as part of the Pension Protection Act of 2006 (PPA 2006), which offers charitably minded individuals a golden opportunity to make gifts from their IRA’s and exclude the amount of their gifts from gross income. To qualify for the Pennsylvania Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program (EITC): • donors must be 70 1/2 years of age or older; • transfers must go directly from the IRA to qualified charities; • gifts cannot exceed $100,000 per taxpayer; and • gifts must be outright. * * Transfers to donor advised funds, supporting organizations, charitable remainder trusts, and charitable annuities do not qualify.
The opportunity is available for 2006 and 2007, and no charitable income-tax deduction is allowed. Until now, individuals withdrawing $100,000 from their IRA’s and contributing it to a charity would have had to include the $100,000 in their income and would have been allowed a federal charitable income-tax deduction. Ostensibly, the net result was zero tax implication – a “wash” for all practical purposes. The new law presents a significant opportunity for those taxpayers unable to use some or all of the charitable deduction. If you have any questions or to find out if you qualify, please contact our office at (215) 233-2350.
