From The Hip! Spring is often the season associated with renewal; however, it was this fall that brought a sense of revitalization to the campus of La Salle College High School. The four-level, 40,000 square foot addition that opened in conjunction with the start of the 150th school year, enhanced the existing academic space and the new Marian Chapel brought a bona fide place of worship to the school community. The restoration of the center courtyard provided the perfect bridge between the new and original structures. The energy generated from this new construction is matched only by the splendor of the building itself as visitors continually find themselves in awe of its beauty and features. The renovations to the third floor of McClean Hall, which were completed in November – new windows and doors, walls, ceilings, lighting, HVAC, and lockers – have rejuvenated the once aging academic wing. The sequential renovation of this building remains on schedule with the second floor due to open in April and the first floor scheduled to be completed over the summer and prior to the start of the 2009-2010 school year. The current construction projects will continue to revitalize La Salle College High School well into next year. Fall also saw the renewal of an old rivalry with La Salle (and the Philadelphia Catholic League) entering play in the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA). For the first time since 1980, the winners from the Philadelphia Catholic League and Philadelphia Public League would meet to crown a true “City” champion (PIAA District XII Champion). By winning Catholic League Championships in Golf, Cross Country, and Football, the Explorers played for the City Championship in three sports and won two – Golf and Cross Country. The September issue of Philadelphia Magazine featured La Salle College High School as one of the top schools in the area for technology as well as service. Only a handful of schools received recognition in more than one category and the article spoke to the uniqueness of La Salle’s programs and offerings. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced the names of ten seniors from La Salle College High School who are semifinalists in the 2009 competition for Merit Scholarship Awards. With an additional twenty National Merit Commended students, La Salle reemerged as the leader of National Merit recognized students amongst Catholic and private secondary schools in the Delaware Valley. I encourage you to renew your interest in La Salle College High School and, by doing so, get to experience an institution that is growing, thriving, and gaining attention across the state of Pennsylvania.

Happenings At La Salle
Underdogs Rule
Proud Grandparents
The Football Team began the season unranked and not picked to make the playoffs. In September, they snapped St. Joseph’s Prep 55-game regular season winning streak that had dated back to 1999 and proceeded to finish the season tied for first place in the Philadelphia Catholic League Red Division. In the playoffs, they beat The Prep for a second time and then avenged an earlier loss to Father Judge to capture their second Philadelphia Catholic League Championship in three years. The “dream season” came to an end when the Explorers lost to George Washington High School in the City Championship game (PIAA District XII AAAA Championship). The team was comprised of seventeen All-Catholics, of which ten were underclassman, and Head Coach Drew Gordon was named Coach-Of-The Year.
The holiday season commenced with over 340 grandparents proudly visiting with their freshman grandsons on Wednesday, November 26, 2008 for a Thanksgiving Prayer Service lead by La Salle’s chaplain, Reverend Anthony Janton ‘69. Brother Richard Kestler, FSC ’60 offered a few remarks before inviting the guests to light refreshments in the auditorium followed by family photos in the gym. The grandparents concluded their visit by touring the new first floor addition including the chapel, campus ministry, and the book store.
Crossing The Finish Line
What happens when two elderly sisters take it upon themselves to ease the loneliness of others by poisoning them? La Salle College High School presented three performances of Arsenic and Old Lace, the hilariously funny Broadway farce that spawned the Frank Capra movie of the same name. The performances ran October 17–19, 2008 and featured a diverse cast representing students from all four classes.
Fresh off winning their sixth consecutive Philadelphia Catholic League Championship and first ever District XII Championship, the Cross Country Team traveled to the Hershey Parkview Cross Country Course and ran what is perhaps the greatest team race in school history. They entered the Pennsylvania State Championship largely overlooked by most outside observers, despite having won the Philadelphia Catholic League and District XII in very impressive fashion. The Explorers were only ranked 10th in the state; however, their pack running style proved to be too much. After waiting nearly 45 minutes for results, it was finally announced that La Salle had finished second – 35 points behind North Penn, who were ranked 11th in the USA and 2nd in the Northeast.

Men of Intellect
The Men of La Salle held the 59th Annual Father/Son Banquet on Thursday, November 20, 2008 at Williamson Restaurant in Horsham. Over 700 fathers and sons attended the event, which included an wonderful dinner, prizes, and music by the La Salle Jazz Band. The keynote speaker was Rear Admiral Ray Smith, USN (Ret.), who is widely regarded as one of the Navy’s most inspirational leaders. A Navy SEAL for thirty-one years, he achieved extraordinary success through focused, participatory leadership. During his four-year tenure as Commander of the 2300-men SEAL force, he raised personnel retention to a level three times the Navy average and as a Navy Captain, he led the Navy SEALs in Operation Desert Storm, conducting over two hundred operations of strategic significance while incurring no casualties.
The National Merit Scholarship Program announced the names of ten seniors from La Salle College High School who are semifinalists in the 2009 competition for Merit Scholarship Awards. Founded in 1955, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation in Evanston, IL was established to reward high school students for academic excellence. Winners stand to receive corporate-donated scholarships of no less than $2,500. Last year, a total of $51.9 million was disbursed nationwide. About 16,000 students nationwide were named as semifinalists, including nearly 400 from the Delaware Valley. The La Salle seniors receiving the distinction are: Timothy M. Asztalos, James P. Catalino, William Dearden, David J. Dickson, Patrick J. Gavin, Nicholas C. Rizzuto, Kevin T. Seybert, John E. Stumpo, Jonathan W. Walsh, and Mathew C. White.

On Tuesday November 25, 2008 the La Salle Community concluded its Thanksgiving Food Drive to benefit families served by St. Vincent’s Parish in Germantown, by presenting the collection to Father Richard Rock during the annual Thanksgiving Prayer Service. Throughout drive, which lasted six days, students collected canned goods and monetary donations in their homerooms to provide the families with food for Thanksgiving and beyond. In all, over ninety baskets of food were collected and filled a cargo van to capacity. In addition, over $2,200 dollars was collected, which was used to purchase forty turkeys and make a significant donation to the food bank run by St. Vincent’s.
The College Counseling Center held their annual College Interview day on Thursday, October 9, 2008, which featured 61 admissions representatives from forty-eight different colleges and universities. In all, 770 interviews were scheduled for the Class of 2009 and all 254 seniors participated in this valuable opportunity that has been a mainstay at La Salle College High School for over twenty years.
The Wall Honor To Serve La Salle College High School held its annual Honors Convocation on Thursday, October 16, 2008, where over 290 students – Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors – received a Scholastic “L” for achieving academic honors (minimum GPA of 3.50 with no grade lower than a “C”). Four members of the faculty – Linda Donahue, Jerry Evans, Julia Maher, and Joseph Vettori – were honored for their twenty-five years of service to La Salle College High School. Andrew Morrisroe, ‘92, President and CEO of CTN Solutions, Inc., was the keynote speaker. Drew attributes much of his business and personal success to involvement in a number of non-profit and charitable organizations, including the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Foundation (HOBY), which has been a special focus of his efforts.
Nineteen Seniors from Mr. Gerald Miller’s History of Vietnam Class visited the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, DC on Sunday, October 19, 2008. This trip marked the 54th time students from the semester long course have visited the Wall and other sites in Washington, DC. The trip began at the Arlington National Cemetery visiting the graves of President John F. Kennedy and Senator Robert Kennedy. The group also observed the changing of the guards at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. At “The Wall”, students located names of local veterans they had researched after their visit to the Philadelphia Vietnam Memorial.
Water Service
Playing Through The Golf Team made history on Wednesday, October 8, 2008 when they became the first Philadelphia Catholic League school to win a District XII Championship. The Explorer’s victory at the PIAA District XII Championship, held at Island Green, earned them a spot in the state tournament. Kyle DiGiacobbe fired a 77 to lead all La Salle golfers and finish third overall. La Salle earned a trip to the District XII Championship by successfully defending the Philadelphia Catholic League Championship on Monday, September 29, 2008 at Blue Bell Country Club with a 24 stroke victory over Father Judge and Kennedy-Kenrick. Kevin Genaurdi, Kevin Seybert, Tucker Durkin, and Mark Schnupp earned All-Catholic honors. It was the Explorers 11th Philadelphia Catholic League Championship in the last thirteen years.
The Water Polo Team, in just their fifth year, entered the PIAA and traveled to new schools and new tournaments. As the season drew to a close, the team finished 9th in the state rankings, which is a tremendous accomplishment given the high caliber of teams playing water polo in Pennsylvania. Instead of rushing home after practice on Monday, October 20, 2008, the La Salle Water Polo Team stayed longer at school to fill one hundred Halloween treat bags for the students at La Salle Academy. The team’s service project continued the following day when practice was cancelled so the team could personally deliver the candy bags to the students of La Salle Academy. The team members boarded a bus carrying four heavy trash bags loaded with the Halloween goodies. The Water Polo players and coaches spent the afternoon tutoring and helping with homework for any La Salle Academy students that needed their assistance.

La Salle College High School has long instilled in their students the motto “Enter to Learn, Leave to Serve.” This motto has most often been associated with public, philanthropic, and religious service. Recently it has included service in the military. The history of La Salle boys serving their country is long and storied. Students left La Salle early to serve in World War I and World War II. The graduation ceremony of the Class of 2007, featured the posthumous awarding of a diploma to Stephen Vincent Keough ’45, who left at the end of his junior year and passed away while serving our country in World War II. Stephen Keough is one of many La Salle alums who lost their life in World War II.

La Salle College High School suffered the loss of Carl F. Hynek ’63, who died while serving in Vietnam and is La Salle’s lone representative on the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial Wall in Washington, DC. In April of 2007, we lost 1st Lt. Travis L. Manion USMC’ 99 while he was serving in Iraq. I had the privilege of knowing Travis through his involvement in Football and Wrestling. The loss of Travis caused me to become more aware of the boys who have recently left La Salle to serve our nation. In the last five years, we have had graduates attend the U.S. Military Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Coast Guard Academy, Merchant Marine Academy, and The Citadel as well as being involved in ROTC programs across the tri-state region. I had the honor of working with four of our recent graduates: 1st Lt. Bert Bender, USMC ’03, who spent three years working out with me each morning and then went on to the U.S. Naval Academy; 1st Lt. Patrick McCarthy’02, U.S. Army, who played football and lacrosse at La Salle before attending the U.S. Military Academy at West Point; 1st Lt. Trevor Needham’02, USA, who wrestled and was also a
member of my morning workout crew before entering the Army ROTC program at the University of Scranton, and 1st Lt. John P. O’Hara’99, USN, who was a star lacrosse player for the La Salle before entering the U.S. Naval Academy with Travis Manion. It is my pleasure to have known each of these young men as La Salle Boys and now as dedicated officers in our nation’s military. I consider it an honor to correspond with them on a regular basis as they serve our Nation. From Brother’s Boys to Plebes to Officers, these are clearly a few good men. The list of men who graduated from La Salle College High School and who went to serve our country is too lengthy for the pages of this magazine. The La Salle Community is grateful to each of them for their dedication. We recognize their sacrifice and embrace their love of country. Since we cannot share all of these stories, allow me to highlight one of my many correspondences with 1st Lt. Patrick McCarthy, USA, in which he reflects how his years at La Salle helped to prepare him to meet the daily struggles that he faces in Northern Iraq.

“The importance of one’s life is not judged on what they do, but what they do for others.” The above quotation helped mold my beliefs which began in my formative years as a student at La Salle College High School and has continued in my current career as an Officer in the United States Army.
A
s a young child growing up in a large family, much was always expected of my brothers, sisters and I. We knew the importance of working together as a family as well as helping each other when needed. Growing up in Lafayette Hill, I attended St. Philip Neri grade school where I was one of two students to go onto La Salle upon graduating from eighth grade. I entered La Salle in 1998 and was immediately inducted into the Lasallian brotherhood through my interactions with teachers, faculty, brothers, and students. As a freshman I began to appreciate all that La Salle had to offer as the upperclassmen displayed their involvement in numerous service groups and outreach programs. I was very much accustomed to service and wanted to participate in service of others at La Salle. The first time I heard the expression of selfless service, I was sitting in the back of Brother Frank’s religion class; and as the years passed that motto was soon to become a calling. During my four years at La Salle I joined numerous service groups; including the Lasallian Service Corps; which today is assisting Soldiers in Iraq in numerous ways. June of this year, my battalion received the largest delivery to date of many items that are of great need to my fellow soldiers and I. I am very grateful and most proud that the dedication and support of my high school continues to support and provide selfless service to those that defend our country halfway around the world. During my years at La Salle, I played football, lacrosse, basketball, and maintained a part time job at an accounting firm. It was in the classroom and on the fields of friendly strife that I learned the basics of my leadership philosophy that is with me today. It was here that I have developed into the man that I was to become and to seek out the challenges that may lie ahead in our changing world. This foundation set me on my path of service and gave me the drive to reach beyond the traditional college education. LaSalle was where I first learned that one can not lead unless they first learn to follow. I decided to build upon that philosophy with my decision to attend The United States Military Academy at West Point.
At West Point I learned that “Selfless Service” is one of the seven Army Values (Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage) – values and principles so deeply ingrained in every Soldier that many of them wear a “dog tag” outlining those values on a chain around their necks. It serves as an ever-present reminder that Selfless Service is a cornerstone value in our lives. St. John Baptist de La Salle dedicated his life to the service of the poor and like him we too have a call to a life of service to our country. As an Engineer Officer and Soldier currently deployed to Mosul, Iraq; the idea of service is still a very important function in my life and the lives of my Soldiers. We did not come to Iraq because we wanted war, but because we don’t want war, and we’re certain that without a struggle for democracy, stability, and human liberty in the Middle East there can be no peace. We continue on with the hope that our service will allow our nation to achieve that end in the Middle East and spare future generations the pain of war.
“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” Ralph Waldo Emerson Quote found under the photo of Patrick T. McCarthy in the 2002 edition of the Blue and Gold (yearbook).
The 94th Engineer Battalion has constructed over 100 Combat Outposts, repaired ten bridges, conducted close to 500 culvert and crater repairs, and conducted over 150 miles of route sanitation throughout the city of Mosul and Northern Iraq. The continued effort that the Soldiers of this battalion have displayed towards the Iraqi Police, Iraqi Army, and the Iraqi People is awe inspiring. I share with them an immense pride and esprit-de-corps, which comes from being a member in the United States Army and in the service that we provide to this country. The Sapper Creed states, “I am a Sapper, the cutting edge of my country’s sword.” Sappers are combat engineers who advance with the front-line infantry, and they have fought in every war in American history. Sappers build and repair fortifications and weaken the enemy with demolitions and heavy equipment in order to lead the infantry to victory on the battlefield. Like Sappers guiding the Infantry, the notion of selfless service guides a Soldier’s life in service to others; for we are the point and will continue to cut forward. La Salle provided me with a strong education and moral foundation on which to go forward in life. It prepared me for my future and gave me the knowledge, understanding and memories that I will continue to look back on for strength in difficult times.

Operation
BEDDI N G
During April of 2008, the school community at La Salle College High School joined forces to collect basic supplies for troops serving in Iraq. In addition, the students raised over $1,250 to help defray the cost of transporting these goods to Iraq. The primary beneficiary of the supplies was 1st Lt. Patrick T. McCarthy, a 2002 graduate of the school and a 2006 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, who was deployed in October of 2007 and is currently conducting engineering missions in Northern Iraq. He is one of four brothers to attend La Salle College High School. The school collected enough supplies for his entire platoon in an effort to show support for not only one of their own, but for all the men and women serving with him. La Salle College High School teamed with Operation Bedding and worked with Mary Conboy of the Adam Conboy Memorial Fund to assist in the collection and transportation of the supplies to Iraq. On Wednesday, June 4, 2008, five seniors from La Salle College High School packed the supplies and transported 74 boxes totaling over 1,500 lbs. to the U.S. Postal Facility at the Philadelphia International Airport.

Dear Friends of La Salle, Words cannot adequately express the great pride I felt this past year as I watched our school and our students excel in so many ways. It was certainly a banner year for our sports teams – we captured five Philadelphia Catholic League Championships and two Pennsylvania State Championships, which created an incredible sense of excitement and pride among our students and school community. Our athletic achievements were rivaled by by a number of academic accomplishments that included twenty-eight students recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, 80 AP Scholars, and a senior class that earned over $22.5 million in documented schaolarships and grants. Amidst a challenging economy, I am proud to report that 73% of the Class of 2008 earned academic and/or athletic scholarships. Watching our facilities become a reality as the contractors put the finishing touches on our four level, 40,000 square foot academic expansion has afforded our Board of Trustees a wonderful feeling of accomplishment. These are but a few of the tremendous achievements that have positively impacted our student and parents, our alumni, our faculty and administration, and our Board of Trustees. La Salle is, indeed, a school that is constantly “exploring” ways to enhance the educational experience for our students. None of these wonderful accomplishments would be possible if not for the generosity of so many individuals from all walks of life. La Salle is truly a diverse community of individuals who work together for the common good of our school and our students. There exists at La Salle a belief that something transformational happens to the students who pass through the hallowed halls of La Salle College High School. It isn’t something one can see or touch, but it’s there all the same. It’s something that all of us connected with La Salle value and are willing to support, sometimes sacrificially. Whether it is with our money, our talent, our time, or our heart – we are committed to La Salle’s future. I am proud to share the names of these individuals with you in the pages that follow. Each name represents a commitment to the mission of La Salle and to its future. Each gift has touched the life of a promising young man. Collectively, we have seen the future through the eyes of our students and have blessed them with our caring support. Thank you again for supporting our boys so they can become our “Men of Tomorrow!” Sincerely yours, Brother Richard Kestler, FSC ’60 President

In honor of the school’s Sesquicentennial Anniversary, alumni, parents, and friends of La Salle College High School were asked to make gifts to the 2007–2008 De La Salle Annual Fund. In typical La Salle fashion, many generously answered the call and contributed over $975,000. Alumni contributed more than $785,000, which was an 11% increase over last year. Parents contributed a record $150,000, which was a 15% increase over last year. In an effort to keep the cost of a La Salle education affordable for all deserving students, the school charges a tuition that only covers 83% of the actual expense to educate a student at La Salle College High School. The remaining 17% comes from various fundraising initiatives – primarily, the De La Salle Annual Fund. Every contribution to La Salle College High School is a direct investment in the life of its students.
La Salle College High School makes every effort to ensure the accuracy of its records; however, errors may occur. Dear Friends of La Salle, This past year was not so much of a transition as was the case the year before; rather, more of a time of development and growth. A number of initiatives set forth in the Strategic Plan that La Salle’s Board of Trustees established and refined began to take shape, including the completion of an academic wing that opened in conjunction with the start of the school year. The addition, along with the three new fields that were developed along Route 309 and Paper Mill Road, will help to expand and enhance La Salle’s campus over the next several years. It is truly an exciting time at La Salle. As chairman of La Salle’s Board of Trustees, I can confidently report that La Salle’s administrative team has been working diligently to make our school the best that it can be and I want to personally congratulate them and the entire faculty for all that has been accomplished on behalf of La Salle and our students this past year. They are the heart and soul of this fine institution and help to ensure that La Salle continues its long-standing tradition of educational excellence. Equally as important are our volunteers and donors. They are the foundation upon which all else depends. Without your love and support of La Salle, the vision we have for our school and our students would not be possible. You make things happen. From our alumni to our parent support groups – all play a critical role not only in La Salle’s future but also in our leaders of tomorrow. On behalf of the entire Board of Trustees, please accept my heartfelt thanks for your willingness to be part of something much larger than ourselves. Together we are building a better future – one student at a time. Sincerely,
Al J. Gabriele Chairman Board of Trustees

EDITOR’S NOTE In the Summer 2008 issue of the Explorer, David Geppert ’76 was inadvertently listed under the “Deaths located on page 32 of the magazine. In fact, David is alive and well. Faculty/Staff Annual Fund The 2007–2008 Faculty/Staff Annual Fund, chaired by Jerry Evans, was a great success. Members of La Salle’s faculty and staff contributed over $18,000 toward the Student Emergency Fund. This fund was established to help scholarship students who may find themselves unable to pay for incidentals such as textbooks, lunch, transportation, or some other expense deemed necessary for the good of the student’s educational experience. Thanks to the following individuals, all students have access to the resources needed to be a success at La Salle. SESQUICENTENNIAL C E L E B R AT I O N
