Our rich history…
Established in 1858, La Salle College High School began at Saint Michael Parish at Second and
Jefferson Streets in Philadelphia. Initially known as the “Select School,” it eventually took the name “Christian Brothers Academy.” In 1863, the school became the college preparatory division of La Salle College.
In 1867, La Salle moved to Juniper and Filbert Streets. In 1882, the Christian Brothers acquired the mansion of Michael Bouvier – a prominent Philadelphia banker – located on Broad Street near Girard Avenue. In 1929, La Salle opened a new campus in Belfield in the Wister Woods section of Philadelphia. Until 1960 La Salle College and La Salle College High School shared the same campus.

a new practice field consisting of 95,000 square feet of highly-durable slit film synthetic turf, was constructed on the lower campus below Ward Field and along Route 309. The field is lined for football, lacrosse, soccer, and rugby and is used for practice and games. A new grass field, complete with an irrigation system, was constructed adjacent to the turf field.
2017
the original cafeteria was converted into the Glaser Center, a 15,344 square foot dining hall and student assembly space complete with an outdoor recreation area.

“La Salle provided a myriad of academic opportunities that not only prepared me for my future education, but also ignited my own passion for several subjects. I enjoyed the classes I took during my four years, but not just because of the material learned in each course. Rather, it was the ideas that the teachers challenged me with, the new ways of thinking, and the creative methods to solving a problem, writing an essay, or conducting an experiment. At other schools, the student must meet the academic requirements of the school, but at La Salle, the school will meet the academic ability of the student to invoke new ideas in them and to foster a prolific educational environment.” La Salle College High School

La Salle College High School is a Catholic ministry that develops each young man to his fullest potential – intellectually, spiritually, socially, and physically. The signs at the entrance and exit of the campus stand as a constant reminder of the school’s mantra. “Enter to Learn” establishes the belief that learning is a lasting endeavor. “Leave to Serve” inspires a lifelong commitment to service, especially to those in need. Together, they guide young men on a path that brings creative and generous responses to the world.
LA SALLE COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS LIVE THEIR FAITH THROUGH THEIR ACTIONS, RECOGNIZE THE INTER-CONNECTEDNESS OF THE WORLD, AND ACT ON THEIR OBLIGATION TO REMEDY INJUSTICE. THROUGH ITS MANY HIGHLY IMPACTFUL SERVICE PROGRAMS, LA SALLE FOSTERS AN AWARENESS OF LOCAL AND WORLD COMMUNITIES AND THE IMPORTANCE OF TAKING RESPONSIBILITIES ON BOTH PLATFORMS.

Day to day, as I witness how my classmates act with those in need, I am able to see the hand of God present in the world. I can feel the love that comes only from God when I see the students heed the call of “Leave to Serve.” These students do, at times, play sports and are involved in other activities, yet many of them make time for service to others, for it is the root of the Lasallian Mission and who they are. Men like these are the future of the Church and I aspire to one day serve them and their families.”

“My advice to an incoming freshman is to get involved. It’s easy to just let your first year go by without joining any clubs or participating in any sports. Even if you aren’t an athlete, managing a team is a great way to be involved. If athletics isn’t your thing, La Salle has plenty of clubs that can fulfill nearly any interest you may have. Letting all these opportunities go by is simply a waste. You’ll build many strong friendships by being around classmates after school.”

“Over the last four years, La Salle has given me the opportunity to learn about, work with, and explore cutting-edge technology usually found within large corporations. I was able to achieve this working side-by-side the dedicated faculty and staff of the IT Department. La Salle is so devoted to educating its students about technology that as a senior I was given keys to the server room and the same level administrative-credentials as the Chief Information Officer. This level of trust is not possible at most schools and the unique environment at La Salle has not only given me the knowledge and experience to manage a 1,500-user network but has shown me what I want to pursue in college and beyond.”

“I have two pieces of advice for an incoming freshman: 1) Be yourself. 2) Get involved with everything. These things may sound cliché, but La Salle offers so many outstanding activities that allow you to branch out, try new things, and meet new people. I had the best freshman year and made some awesome new friends because I tried different things, but I do wish I would have done more. You only get four years here, so make sure you enjoy every minute, of every hour, of every day to the fullest.”

“The music and arts program showcases the talents of musicians, singers, and performers. It gives opportunities to those students who love art and want to participate, and has personally impacted my friendships, my confidence, and my love for the arts. I did theater all four of my years at La Salle and I wouldn’t trade that experience for anything. Working with teachers and students who were passionately dedicated to putting on a show or a concert exemplifies the Lasallian values of hard work, integrity, and respect. I got the chance to really experience a core part of La Salle’s arts, and I’m incredibly blessed to have participated in such a creative aspect of school life.”

The school’s nickname and mascot, The Explorer, was erroneously bestowed by a sports writer in 1931 who was covering a basketball game at La Salle College, which was also the home of La Salle College High School. He thought that the school was named after the French explorer, René-Robert Cavelier Sieur de La Salle, and not Saint John Baptist de La Salle. Despite his error, the nickname remained and La Salle College High School and La Salle University are the only schools in America to use the Explorer as their mascot.

I had to learn to prioritize my schedule and lifestyle to achieve the goals I set. All the sacrifices I made and work I put in each day became my greatest successes. “For an incoming freshman, the first thing I would recommend is getting your summer assignments done early, as this was the first mistake I made. The second thing I would recommend is to do some sort of summer camp or activity, which is also a good way to make friends before school begins. The next thing I recommend is to try to study something every night so you do not have to cram the night before a test. You should try to get work done as early as possible.”

“I would encourage an incoming freshman to get friendly with upperclassmen. A great leg-up in high school is if you know older kids at the school. An older sibling, a neighbor, or even a friend of the family who goes to La Salle can be a great help as well as be your friend.
