WEL COM E It’s amazing what a little confidence can achieve. Evidently in this circumstance I refer to the housing market and in particular the luxury property market that our boutique agency services. I’ve spoken previously about the impact the media has, not only on property prices and suburb-by-suburb attraction but also on the confidence of every element involved, which culminate to create the real ‘upturn’ in our overall property market. Real Estate agencies provide valuable feedback on the decreased days on market of properties within their sales portfolio and increased buyers, offers and interest, economists speculate of prosperous times ahead and the reserve bank even reduce interest rates to lifetime lows yet the market continues to stagnate until such time as the media in all its guises delivers an air of positivity that cements the plethora of speculation and tangible evidence by industry pundits. This confidence that has now been delivered has, all of a sudden, created the revival of our property market in the lower end locally, showing consistent figures of the previous replication our local market has of the Sydney market of days gone by. As the top end in the Sydney market has similarly significantly improved, as long as trends fail to disappoint, the South East Queensland luxury property market is poised for a significant upturn in competing buyers, rising prices and lower stock levels than has been evidenced in the preceding five years. So, sit back and enjoy our latest publication featuring wonderful editorial pieces from our exceptional partners and a significantly improved lifestyle element to tempt you into enhancing the quality of your existence even after we’ve helped you find your dream residence.

Designfocus Resource DESIGNING FOR LUXURY
A
young man sat on the steps of the Sydney GPO, waiting for his university friends. He looked across Martin Place at the handsome sandstone façade of the Bank of Australasia building on the opposite corner and admired the harmony of the architecture.
“One day i would like to own that buidling, he mused”. Fast forward 30 years. The idle musing of a young man had become a reality. Paspaley now owned that building. With a successful 10 year relationship with Paspaley projects, Nick Paspaley knew that Peter Rektor understood what was needed to be achieved, to transform this significant heritage-listed building into an elegant and inviting luxury store, to display the exquisite collections of Paspaley South Sea pearls. Designfocus was commissioned for both the architectural and the interior design elements of the project. Rektor also designed the bespoke 4 metre diameter hand-crafted Murano glass chandelier the largest in Australia, the matching wall sconces and feature column lighting, the finely crafted display cabinetry and the grand marble staircase. Robyn Rektor sourced and coordinated the team of artisans, that carefully restored the key heritage elements. The renovation was awarded Best Adaptive Reuse by the Master Builder’s Association and is cited as a best example of Adaptive > Reuse by both Sydney Council and the NSW Heritage Office. Rektor’s intuitive design aesthetic, combined with Paspaley’s trust in him “to get the job done”, resulted in a stunning environment and a most satisfied client.

DESIGNING FOR PRESTIGE Peter Rektor’s first meeting with Michael WInkler, the Managing Director of Porsche Cars Australia at that time, was in the lounge of Sydney Airport. He and Michael Bartsch, the then Director of Marketing for Porsche Cars Australia, were on their way back to Melbourne from Germany. Rektor and Bartsch already had an established, successful relationship with Rektor having designed several Motor Show displays for Porsche Cars Australia. Bartsch had arranged the meeting with Winkler and recommended that Porsche Cars Australia commission Designfocus to design and document the complete exterior architecture and interior design, site specific for all the dealerships in Australia, in accordance with the new German CI Guidlelines, for the introduction of the Porsche Cayenne. New works also included the upgrading of the existing service centres and customer service/lounge waiting areas. Designfocus also negotiated firm prices from all the suppliers, to ensure that specified products and materials were supplied to all dealerships, at the negotiated rates and delivery service. Peter Rektor presented the new program to the dealers at their annual Porsche conference in Melbourne. On completion, the dealers all reported on their satisfaction with the program and their new look. Wolfgang Ungerer-Group Architect, Porsche AG Corporate Design said: “Peter, our thanks to you and your team, for your professional service in design, documentation and implementation of the Australian dealerships Porsche CI program”. Peter Rektor creates designs that are elegant and timeless, that add value to the clients important assets. This is the trademark of Peter and Robyn Rektor and their company, Designfocus Resource.

DESIGNING FOR LEISURE Pinctada Cable Beach is a Multi-Award Winning five star spa resort in Broome – gateway to the unique Kimberley region of Northwest Australia. Having previously consulted with Pinctada Hotels & Resorts, this project was particularly special as it was located in Broome WA, in the Cable Beach environ. Their vision was to create a world-class spa resort, that captured the heritage and the uniqueness of the landscape, spirit, and culture of the Kimberley region. They knew that Peter and Robyn Rektor and the Designfocus team would be able to create the architectural detailing, public spaces, interiors and finishes that would take their vision to reality.
Fabrics had to be user friendly – fade resistant nonpilling, non-sagging, non-itching, non-scratching etc. The Designfocus team drove the suppliers crazy with their demands, but the fabric selection presented for client approval, achieved those very high standards. Sourcing the glass mosaic pool tiles, proved to be quite an adventure. Rektor said: “With tile samples coming in from a variety of suppliers, the studio started to look like a tile showroom. We had a deep galvanised washtub filled with water, to evaluate the appearance of the tiles underwater. It was quite interesting to see how much the tone and sparkle varied”.
Designs and concepts were prepared and worked and reworked, until the essence and the rhythm of the Kimberley started to emerge.
A final decision was made and the glass mosaic tiles loaded on to a truck in Sydney – which subsequently jack-knifed on the notorious road to Broome.
A unique lattice design was created for exterior and interior detailing throughout the complex. A polished Pinctada Maxima pearl shell centrepiece featured on the lattice, used in public areas.
Many frantic (the client) and emphatic (the designer) phone calls, achieved the necessary action to procure more tiles and to make that all important deadline. End result – a beautiful pool.
Wherever possible, sustainable and/or renewable products were used. The public areas furniture and rooms and balconies furniture was designed by Peter Rektor and manufactured in Indonesia. The ambient and decorative lighting was also designed by Peter and manufactured in Bali.
On completion, the client commented: “A wonderful result. Your beautiful public spaces, lights, lattice, the furniture and rooms you designed, all create a very romantic ambience. It’s always a delight working with you and Robyn”.
All fabrics selected had to meet very stringent criteria flammability, durablility, washability etc.
To lounge by the pool on a balmy Broome evening, after a delectable dinner and a glass or two of fine wine and gaze up at the twinkling night sky, one can’t help but feel, that Pinctada Cable Beach is indeed a special place.

Luxury Design A journey into the company owned projects that push the boundaries of design, inclusions and price barriers within their respective marketplaces. A desire to expand the SHAW Property Group brand into a more diverse entity was conceived in mid 2012 with the view to represent newly developed projects on a large scale. With everything the group does however, there must be a level of uniqueness and personality that isn’t already on show or even possible within that field. It was conceived that by working with the developer and the architect at the commencement of a project and adding valuable feedback on layouts, orientations and most importantly, finishes, upon the time of sale we would not only have an intimate knowledge of the project, the ambience, quality of finishes and more but would have designed a product in every sense that is exactly what the end client desires by utilizing our market knowledge. This process would then allow us to not only sell the project out in a shorter time frame but also achieve premium prices and a unique product that isn’t being offered elsewhere.

Hillside Cresent
Wanting to launch into this new market with a solid foundation and evidenced results, the decision was made to purchase two properties in premium locations that required a major overhaul renovation to showcase the design skills and how prolific the end result can be with the right know-how. The two properties were both located in Brisbane’s most premier residential suburb, Hamilton with one overlooking the Brisbane river and city and the other no more than 50 meters to the famed Racecourse Road lifestyle precinct. Location is paramount in real estate and these locations were perfect. Hillside crescent, featuring panoramic views over the river and city skyline is an original 1960’s brick unit complex in a street featuring some of the finest homes in Queensland so the renovation needed to be aimed at a particular demographic that appreciated extremely high quality finishes, space and practicality commensurate with the location. Before and after photos detail the extensive reconfiguration internally and the subsequent result featuring imported tiles, stone and marble throughout. Appliances and electronics are state of the art and controlled remotely by a smartphone, there is even a built-in robot vacuum cleaner to take care of maintenance whilst you’re away. Upon completion, a second bathroom was added to the residence to add practicality and value, a walk in robe and ensuite were created to enhance the master bedroom and even a 140” hidden and motorized drop down home theatre system feature to create a house-like feel.

Windermere Road, Hamilton is similarly, one of the foremost locations in this exclusive suburb and once again, an original brick unit complex was chosen for its premium vicinity to Racecourse Road and severe lack of appeal it possessed internally. Finished with a pink kitchen and a multitude of open space inhibiting partition walls, this property was the perfect canvas to add space, style and life to. A spacious, colourful and modern yet slightly retro theme was created in the space, adding thick stone, marble and timber accents to create warmth, intimacy and allure. The colour palette is surely the most striking element with elements painted a daring black and swathes of orange and red. A very unique property upon completion, the finished product had even the tradespeople taking photos to present to future clients.

While the 356’s body was an original design by Porsche employee Erwin Komenda, its mechanicals (including engine, suspension and chassis) were derived from the Volkswagen. The first 356 was road certified in Austria on June 8, 1948, and used many Volkswagen parts for manufacturing economy. Quickly though, Porsche re-engineered and refined the car with a focus on performance. By the late ‘50s many fewer parts were shared handcrafted in aluminum, but when production moved to Zuffenhausen, Germany in 1950, models produced there were steel-bodied. The car we have here, has been the subject of a major restoration. It has travelled just 1000 km since being restored and has many great features and upgrades. The body has had a full bare metal and blast before repainting and is completely rust free. It had many new panels fitted during this process including new inner rear wheel arches, floors and rocker. The undercarriage is as clean as the body with new suspension and all parts replaced, plated or painted where required. All wiring looms and brake lines have been replaced and it is fitted with front disc brakes and amazingly it has air conditioning that really works. This car has been built to be enjoyed and to be driven, hence the superb 160 BHP 2.2 litre motor that has been fitted. After a ten month wait this motor was built by one of the most renound Porsche and VW engine builders in the US Jack Raby at cost of over $28,000. Many brand new parts were employed including heads and billet crank. It is more efficient and is much more reliable and tractable than a warmed 356 could ever be. AUSTRALIA’S LAST FRONTIER Imagine the great expanse of the Pilbara viewed from the air. A large, dry region, known for it’s Aboriginal peoples, it’s ancient landscapes, the red earth and it’s iron ore. With some of the Earth’s oldest rock formations, it includes landscapes of coastal plains and mountain ranges. Home to the world famous Rio Tinto Tom Price open cut iron ore mine. Picture yourself flying into Exmouth to visit the Ninagaloo Marine Park to snorkel this UNESCO World Heritage Listed destination. Ningaloo Reef is Australia’s largest fringing coral reef and is one of the longest near-shore reefs in the world. Stretching over 260 kilometres off the coast of Western Australia. Popular not just for its natural beauty but the 220 species of coral and 500 species of tropical fish visit the area to feed and spawn. The largest of these is the Whale Shark. Witness the most prolific collection of Aboriginal rock-art in Arnhem land, a landscape of rugged ranges fringed by idyllic billabongs, flood plains, paper bark swamps and monsoonal rainforests, an amazingly beautiful wilderness. Australia’s rugged western coastline is a vast rugged landscape. A plethora of experiences, flora and fauna. You could easily spend weeks and months traversing this challenging environment even if you were to take commercial flights to get to your chosen destinations. Unless of course, you choose to explore the region in the ultimate luxe travel alternative: by private jet. Private jet travel allows you to experience far more than you can on a conventional itinerary — without sacrificing comfort and convenience. Privately chartered small jets can land where the large airlines cannot, and with small group sizes of anywhere from 30 to 40 guests means your itinerary can be laden with innovative experiences and exclusive. Whether it’s crossing a continent like Africa, jet setting around the hotspots of the globe or exploring Australia’s last frontier: private jet travel is fast becoming a viable choice for the discerning and time-pressed traveller.

E’cco Bist ro BRISBANE, QUEENSLAND
As one of Australia’s most celebrated chefs, Phillip Johnson has worked for almost 20 years to sculpt his landmark e’cco Bistro in Brisbane. It’s a long-standing local gem that’s had a cult following from the beginning, and now there’s a new reason to love this Brisbane dining institution and its constantly evolving menu. With a culinary ethos synonymous with quality, Head Chef Samuel Brading now adds and subtracts creations to the menu every few weeks, making e’cco one of a handful of local restaurants that transforms its menu habitually. Such fruition allows the award-winning restaurant to offer only the freshest seasonal fare, providing customers with the ultimate dining experience. First established in 1995, e’cco has continually impressed culinary fanatics and wine lovers alike with its sophisticated fare, charismatic staff and warm atmosphere. Despite the eatery’s evolution, the food remains rooted in presenting simple and succulent produce as the hero of each dish. >

SEARED SCALLOPS, CARMELISED CARROT PURÉE, WAGYU BRESAOLA, WATERCRESS & ORANGE & CUMIN VINAIGRETTE.
Carrot purée: 600g carrots, peeled & sliced into 5mm rounds 30 grams castor sugar 30 grams unsalted butter 30 milliliters water
Petit salad: 12 slices wagyu bresaola 2 navel oranges 120 milliliters extra virgin olive oil 100g watercress 2 teaspoons black sesame seeds extra-virgin olive oil 100 milliliters rice bran oil 24 large scallops, roe off salt flakes & freshly ground black pepper, to taste 30 grams unsalted butter
Serves 6 as starter
Place sugar in small saucepan, gently make dry caramel, ensuring it doesn’t burn. Once a rich even golden colour is achieved, add carrots, butter & water. Stir occasionally to lift caramel from the bottom of saucepan. Place a sheet of baking paper over carrots, simmer for 5-10 minutes or until carrots are tender. Blitz in blender until smooth, season with salt & pepper to taste & keep warm. Preheat oven to 160ºC. Arrange six bresaola slices on silicon paper lined baking tray. Bake for 10 minutes until crisp. Remove the skin from one orange & cut into segments & reserve. Juice the second orange into a small pot, bring to a simmer & reduce by half, you should have approximately 2 tablespoons. Remove from the heat, whisk in olive oil & cumin, season with salt & pepper to taste. Heat a non-stick pan over medium-high heat, slick with a little rice bran oil, season scallops with salt & pepper. Seal scallops in the pan, being sure not to overcrowd, for 30 seconds to 1 minute to caramelise. Add a knob of butter to the pan, turn the scallops, cook for a further 30 seconds until just cooked. Remove from the pan & drain. To assemble, smear a spoonful of carrot purée onto the centre of a warm plate, combine orange segments, watercress, sesame seeds, fresh bresaola & season with salt & pepper. Dress with orange dressing, divide piles of salad onto serving plates. Arrange scallops around purée & garnish with crispy bresaola.
