o many people are put off when they read or hear the words ‘Feng Shui’. It evokes thoughts of mysticism and superstition and gets a few eyes rolls and brush-offs because of the misunderstanding around the phrase. When first introduced to the concept of Feng Shui, most people already have a preconceived notion about what they think it means. The information and advice available on Feng Shui websites and in books is always so conflicting and overloaded with superstition. True knowledge of this the sacred and ancient Chinese art is traditionally passed down from a Feng Shui master to their student. After being

enlightened with this knowledge, it is fair to say that for all the misunderstanding, Feng Shui is a simple and easy to understand concept when you have the facts. Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese wisdom that serves to improve all aspects of your life and create positive energy influences in your environment. It works on the principle that “like attracts like” where a space with clear, positive energy is conducive to good health, good relationships and peace of mind. It is about our relationship with the surrounding environment and affecting it using simple changes and common sense. 'Feng' means wind and 'Shui' means water. After keen observation of nature,

ancient Chinese sages came to believe that Qi (or Chi) is affected by the flow of wind and water. Feng Shui focuses on the energy of the human body and how environmental patterns influence us. Feng Shui is about energy. So how do you harness the benefits of Feng Shui when selling a home or when you have purchased a new one? It’s about looking at a space holistically and applying principles to increase positive energy and correct negative energy one step at a time. Applying Feng Shui when selling a home can greatly increase the chances of a sale. When you work to increase the positive energy flow of a space by clearing clutter, creating clean organized spaces and

Balance each area of the house making sure that the key areas of relationships, health and wealth are addressed and fill the home with fresh energy in the form of plants and fresh flowers, aromatherapy scents and uplifting music, to allow people enjoy using

and living in their space. Further Feng Shui analysis and balance can be achieved through a qualified Feng Shui professional. In addition to making corrections to the space, furniture design is one area of interiors that can be influenced by Feng Shui. Brisbane’s Design Initial Director Stephen Tam is all too familiar with this concept. He works closely with furniture manufacturers in China whose furniture is carefully constructed to exacting Feng Shui measurements. The furniture is measured using auspicious or ‘lucky’ numbers to ensure the wealth and happiness of their future owners. Measurements exclude the number 4 (four) as its pronunciation is

similar to the word for ‘death’. The physical design of the furniture is fluid and balanced and does not include protruding angles or awkward shapes. This detailed attention to Feng Shui ensures the most positive energy possible for the furniture and the space it is used in. Ultimately, there are many aspects of Feng Shui that all contribute to creating a healthy and balanced environment and work to connect us back to positive, nourishing energy and to nature. Whether buying or selling a new home, or just readjusting our current home, Feng Shui serves to improve our space, our health, our relationships and our peace of mind.

From dreams to reality ...an architects role Architecture presents an opportunity to create something uniquely relative and situational. Liam Kerrigan finds new inspiration in this approach

E

volution, progression, change – all defining words of the state of the world today, whether it is the advanced awareness of global warming, medicine or as superficial as the cars we drive and new technology available. As we become more aware of what is possible with the vast array of digital equipment and the leaps that have been made towards ensuring the sustainability of tomorrow we become more interested and intrigued as to how we can implement these technological advancements to enhance our state of living.

Nothing has ever personified our own personalities and desires as much as where we call home, the physical walls we live within. To truly create a unique space to call ‘home’, hours, days and more than likely, years, have gone into the virtual creation in our minds of how we want our perfect ‘dream’ home to look, to feel and what we want it to say about us. Sadly, very few if any of us possess the unique skills required to conceptualise in a functional form and materialise the design of the masterpiece that’s laying there, in pieces, in our minds.
