Dr. Bimler, former president of Wheat Ridge Ministries, focused on the role of LSS and the church in providing “AHHA moments in an UH-OH world.” Dr. Bimler’s humorous message was built around Laughter, Storying and Sending (LSS) as a means of sharing God’s love with each other and those we serve through our various programs. “Dr. Bimler’s message stressed the importance of not only

providing the people we serve with hope, but making it our joy not our job to do so,” Nels Hendrickson, interim CEO, said. “By bringing love and joy to people in need and sharing laughter with those in difficult situations, we not only improve their lives but make them more receptive to accepting God’s love.” Additionally, board members Becky Cornett, Tim Glasser, Bob Slaven, Rev. Dr. Jim Wilson and Ann Wurster were inducted to their second terms on the LSS Board of Directors. Each returning board member brings with them a unique background and valuable experience, and we thank them for their service.

Tia and her husband were a young couple just getting their start in the world. After being unable to find jobs, things started to take a turn for the worse. With a small child and another one on the way, it became increasingly difficult for Tia and her husband, who was in school, to provide for their family. That’s when Tia decided to call Lutheran Social Services’ Outreach Ministries. Staff supplied Tia with appliances and other household goods, connected her with other services and assistance programs and, most importantly, provided her with the support and compassion she needed to start the process of becoming self-sufficient.

“They’ve helped me with everything. There’s no way they know how much it’s meant to me and my family.”

“They’ve helped me with everything,” said Tia. “There’s no way they know how much it’s meant to me and my family.” Each Christmas, Outreach Ministries sponsors local families, in hopes of making the holiday a little brighter for those in need. One Christmas, Tia and her family were sponsored. Besides toys and new outfits for the children, Tia and her husband received funds that they used to fix their car. Now with transportation, they were able to get to their jobs as well as classes. “When Tia and her family first came to us, they weren’t looking for a handout,” said Mary Woodward, director of Outreach Ministries. “They wanted to get back on their feet as soon as possible. You have to want to help yourself and that’s exactly what they wanted to do.” With the encouragement of Outreach Ministries, Tia decided to go back to school and is currently a Licensed Practical Nurse at a local assisted living community. Now, with the family back on its feet, Tia and her husband donate to Outreach Ministries and are happy they are able to give back to a program that has helped them so much. Donations are urgently needed for LSS’ southern Ohio programs. Your donation can make a difference this holiday season.

“And suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace among men with whom he is pleased.”

Special Thanks Special thanks to Walmart Logistics for its many years of support. Just recently, volunteers from the company brought a huge grill out to Faith Mission and cooked up hot dogs, hamburgers and other cookout food for people eating at the Community Kitchen. In total, they donated 1,000 hot dogs and hamburgers plus buns, condiments, chips, pop, water and even plates and napkins. Walmart Logistics’ generosity has made a significant impact in the fight against hunger and homelessness in central Ohio.

— Luke 2:13-14 Dear Friends, It is easy to forget the real reason we celebrate this time of the year. The holidays draw near and we get lost in the hustle and bustle as we set up trees and lights, take care of last-minute shopping and prepare for visiting relatives. But we must take a break from that joyful chaos and reflect on the true meaning of the holiday season: the celebration of the birth of our Lord and his message of peace. Though it is a wonderful message, peace can be a difficult thing to find. So many of our clients are full of worry, wondering how they will pay their bills, from where their next meal will come or even if they’ll sleep on a bed that night. As we have set out together on this mission to serve those in need, we cannot continue to let them suffer, especially now. We must work to give them a sense of peace.

Together, we have made great strides in addressing the issues of hunger, housing, healing and hope. But more people need our help. They have lost homes and jobs and rest uneasy, wondering how they will get by. That is why we are here, to help them in their darkest times. And as we do that, hopefully we’ll bring that peace they so desperately need into their minds, bodies and souls. This holiday season, I ask you to help spread the Lord’s message and remember those who need it most. Again, thank you for all your prayers and support. Without them, the peace we work to bring to our clients would not be possible. Blessings to you and your family,

It’s hard to imagine the world without these companies and events. Boy Scout’s Project Beautifies TGS The Cambridge Commons Garden at The Good Shepherd (TGS) recently received a makeover courtesy of volunteer Ryan Stewart, a sophomore at Ashland High School and a Boy Scout. Ryan took on the garden as part of his Eagle Scout badge project. Ryan, his family and other Scouts from his troop spent many hours overhauling the somewhat overgrown garden into a beautiful outdoor space TGS residents can enjoy for many years to come. Before a single shovel could hit the ground, Ryan had to do a lot of work. He researched plant materials and raised $685 to pay for the renovation by sending out letters to friends and family asking for donations. Then he

and several of his fellow Boy Scouts cleared out the old plant material, put in a new rock wall, installed weed barrier, planted the new maintenance free plants and mulched. Ryan’s motivation for this project was his Eagle Scout badge, but he also wanted to do something that the residents of The Good Shepherd would enjoy.

“The project went well. The residents enjoyed watching me and the other Scouts add plants and mulch, and they really love the garden,” Ryan said. “I am very happy to have had the experience.” On behalf of TGS’ residents and staff, we thank Ryan and every one who helped turned the garden into something special.
