Like most of us know, it can be hard to get healthy foods on the dinner table. With the generous support of Walmart, the LSS Food Pantries and Faith Mission hope to be able to alleviate this problem somewhat for our clients by providing more healthy options. The LSS Food Pantries recently received a $100,000 Walmart State Giving award for our Healthier Food, Healthier Finances project. This funding will help the pantries purchase and offer healthier foods to clients, most of who are at a high risk of diabetes and heart disease. These foods include lean, low-sodium proteins and shelf-stable foods that are low in sodium and sugar, including low-sodium canned goods such as fruits, vegetables and pasta sauce. As part of this project, we will also begin offering more nutrition education at our pantries. A portion of the award will also help support the Ohio Benefit Bank at the LSS Food Pantries, which offers free tax return preparation and help accessing food stamps, child care credits and other benefits to improve families’ financial health. Faith Mission also received a Walmart State Giving award for $50,000 for our Healthy Hunger Relief project, which will help our busy kitchens offer meals that are lower in sodium, fat and sugar, and include more lean low-sodium protein foods and fresh fruits and vegetables. As part of the project, nutrition education talks will be offered during mealtimes on a regular basis to help clients learn how to eat healthily on a small budget. Special thanks to Walmart for making these projects possible as a result of its substantial donations!

Chad had spent a majority of his life losing a battle with alcoholism. As he approached age 50, Chad realized that half of his life was over, and he needed to make a change. His sister called the Fairfield County Emergency Shelter in tears; she felt she was enabling his problem. Whenever Chad lost a job or housing, she was always there for him and would let him stay with her. Chad never had to face the harsh reality of his problem because his sister was always there to provide a safety net. In a discussion later that evening, Chad expressed to his sister that he was ready to seek help and turn his life around. His sister then suggested that Chad contact the Fairfield County Emergency Shelter. After going to the shelter, Chad was referred to a local addiction recovery center,

began attending Alcohol Anonymous and also received help for other lingering medical problems. The Fairfield County Emergency Shelter even helped Chad to take online classes and earn a certification in housing inspections. Now, Chad has been sober for many years and has been employed with a Lancasterbased transit company for nearly as long. Not only has he been able to better himself, but Chad also recently contacted the Fairfield County Emergency Shelter inquiring if any shelter residents would want to apply to become drivers at the company where he works. Chad has turned his life around and looks to help others; the joy of lending a helping hand now lives in Chad.
