Chantel has always worked. That is until her company downsized and she was left without a job. To survive, she has worked temp jobs and done factory work for the past year or so. Despite this, it’s hard to make ends meet, especially with three teenaged children. Fortunately, Chantel heard about the Lutheran Social Services food distribution in Crestview and has been coming to supplement the food she buys at the store. To make things more difficult, Chantel’s oldest son has health issues and must adhere to a special diet. “I have to do what I have to do,” Chantel said. “This food distribution really helps out considering the price of food. I can maintain enough food for the whole month. Without it, I’d be out. I would sacrifice my food for the kids and make portions a lot smaller.” In Richland County, Feeding America
states 16.3% of the population is food insecure, which means a household doesn’t have access to enough food for a healthy life. At the LSS food distribution in Crestview, an average of 350 people who may otherwise go hungry receive food each month. In addition to food assistance, Chantel also was able to have a Christmas for her kids with the help of LSS. Knowing her circumstances, staff got her involved with LSS’ The Santa Project, a program designed to provide presents to kids who otherwise would not receive any. Speaking about LSS, Chantel said, “They invest in so many people and take the time to show you ways to make meals out of stuff you might not think about. They really care.” If you’d like to donate to LSS’ food distributions in northern Ohio, please go to www.lssco.org and enter your gift under Northern Ohio Ministries on the donate page.
