LAKE-SUMTER STATE COLLEGE
A MESSAGE TO OUR GRADUATES Dear Graduates: On behalf of the District Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, and administration of Lake-Sumter State College, I want to congratulate you on this significant accomplishment. It is said that a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. That first step was your decision to pursue a degree here at LSSC. For many of you, it took tremendous courage and determination to begin this journey. Many of you faced and overcame obstacles that stood in your way of arriving at this milestone. Your unwavering drive to succeed and the support of family, friends, instructors, and advisors were both crucial to your success. I encourage you to take time to thank each of your supporters in a special way. This year, more than ever, you’re aware of the challenges and the struggles facing those in our country’s workforce. Despite the challenges facing you this year, you succeeded. You did so by exhibiting patience, perseverance, and professionalism. These 3 P’s will be the foundation of the successful careers that you will enjoy. For me, one of the most invigorating and liberating aspects of America’s community colleges (we hold true to our community college mission) is that we offer the opportunity for success to everyone. Our graduates are truly a diverse group – each coming from a unique background and circumstance; yet, all are bound together by their dream to attain a college degree. As the global pandemic forces changes to our society, we remain committed to serving the needs of our communities – your success is our mission. LSSC builds and maintains connections with leaders and organizations that offer tremendous support to the College and our students. Through these relationships, we are better able to support you, our students, who then make positive and lasting contributions to our local communities, and beyond. Graduates: Congratulations! You now join a long line of distinguished alumni of LSSC, and we hope that you, like those before you, will experience an exciting and fulfilling future. As you make your next steps, I encourage you to consider how you can be a positive impact in the community. I encourage you to find time to help or encourage others to pursue or continue their education. The responsibility to serve our communities and make an impact lies in all of us. Thank you, graduates, for allowing us to be part of your journey. With Lakehawk Pride,
Stanley M. Sidor, Ed.D. President

Katherine's career goal is to become a registered dental hygienist and run a practice with her husband, who is a soon-to-be dentist. She plans to continue her education at Valencia College, where she will study Dental Hygiene. During her time at LSSC, she was involved in the National Society of Leadership and Success. She is also a member of Phi Theta Kappa. Katherine's advice to future Lakehawks is to "work hard but please take time to experience college life to the fullest. It may feel like forever, but it really will fly by!”

Fall 2021 Commencement Speakers DAPHNE WOOTEN STUDENT SPEAKER, LEESBURG CEREMONY Daphne Wooten, of Leesburg, is graduating from Lake-Sumter State College with an Associate of Arts degree. She plans to continue her education at the University of Central Florida to earn a bachelor’s degree in film production. She’s been performing since she was 12, but it wasn’t until high school that she realized her career goal of producing her own films. She looks forward to creating projects that will inspire and uplift people. Daphne’s advice to future Lakehawks is “to get involved on campus. I had the pleasure of being involved with student government and the theatre program on campus and because of that, I was able to meet so many amazing people, and make so many great memories.”
JAMES SIMONS STUDENT SPEAKER, LEESBURG CEREMONY James Simons, from Tampa, is a graduate of Sickles High School and is graduating with an Associate in Arts degree. James's educational goals are to earn a Master’s degree in English and a PhD in Psychology. During his time at LSSC, he was heavily involved on campus. In addition to working as a student assistant in several roles, he was Vice President of Student Government, one of the founders and first president of the Student Veterans of American at LSSC, and a TEDxLSSC speaker. His favorite memory from LSSC was when he was speaking at TEDxLSSC and a student told him how he helped her see that she was not alone in her own mental health fight. Since leaving the military, James's number one focus has been his mental health. James's advice to future Lakehawks is to "try out for every opportunity and always want to do more." COMMENCEMENT REGALIA The origins of academic dress, caps, gowns, and hoods date back to the 12th and 13th centuries when universities were taking form. Scholars, both teachers and students, wore long gowns to keep warm in the damp and drafty halls of learning. Gradually, styles were adopted which were characteristic of the individual college and of the highest academic degree held by the wearer. In modern days, academic regalia is typically black or the color of the degree-granting institution. At LSSC, associate degree candidates wear black regalia and baccalaureate degree candidates wear green regalia. Faculty and staff wear caps, gowns, and hoods representing the institution and academic discipline of their highest earned degree. Gowns for the doctoral degree have broad velvet panels down the front and three velvet bars on the full, round, open sleeves. This velvet trimming may be either black or the color distinctive of the degree. The master’s degree gown has oblong sleeves, open at the wrist. The sleeve base is square cut with an arc in front. The bachelor’s degree robe is distinguished by long, pointed sleeves. The square “mortar board” cap, traditional for all degrees, may be of serge or broadcloth. For the doctorate degree only, it may also be a tam of velvet and the tassel may be of gold bullion. The hood gives color and meaning to the academic regalia. The color lining of the hood represents the institution where the highest degree was earned and the color of velvet trim indicates the discipline of the degree. Academic disciplines are represented by the following colors: Agriculture.......................................................... Maize Arts, Letters, Humanities................................. White Accountancy, Business, Management................ Drab Economics......................................................... Copper Education..................................................... Light Blue Engineering....................................................... Orange Journalism....................................................... Crimson Library Science.................................................. Lemon Medicine ............................................................. Green

Golden Yellow Theatre................................................... Brown Law.......................................................... Purple
Cords, stoles, medallions, and tassels representing various academic achievements or other honors are also worn at the discretion of some degree-granting institutions. At LSSC, cords identify the academic discipline of baccalaureate candidates and recognize achievements such as graduation honors and membership in honorary societies recognizing outstanding academic achievement. Cords and medallions may also recognize leadership positions and participation in student organizations in the year of graduation. Tassels may also indicate service or affiliation with specific organizations. LSSC graduates may wear cords, medallions, or tassels representing: Academic Excellence Award............................................................................................................Medallion Ambassadors.................................................................................................................Green & White Cords Bachelor of Applied Science in Organizational Management..............................................Drab Cords Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, Summa Cum Laude Honors..............................................
