For many of you, it took tremendous courage to begin this journey. You faced and overcame obstacles that stood in your way of arriving at this milestone. Your unwavering drive to succeed and the support of family, friends, instructors, and advisors were crucial to your success. I encourage you to take time to thank each of your supporters.
The last couple of years have been more challenging than most, but you persevered. You made it and today is proof and celebration of that fact. As you leave this ceremony and begin the next step in your journey, don’t lose your commitment and drive to succeed. Your future is bright and opportunity awaits!
For me, one of the most exciting and important aspects of America’s community colleges (we hold true to our community college mission) is that we offer the opportunity for success to everyone. Our graduates are truly a diverse group – each coming from a unique background and circumstance; yet, bound together by their
dream to attain a college degree.
As we look forward to the future with excitement, the College remains committed to increasing access and opportunity for all learners in the communities we serve. We are embarking on a bold journey to transform the ways in which we connect and educate our students while embracing our rich history of high-quality education and personalized student support services.
In closing, remember that you now join a long line of distinguished alumni of LSSC, and we are confident that you, like those before you, will experience an exciting and fulfilling future. We’re incredibly proud of each of our graduates and know that you will go on to make lasting contributions to our local communities and beyond.
As you plan your next steps, I encourage you to find time to help or encourage others to pursue or continue their education. You know the true value of an education and the responsibility to serve our communities and make an impact lies in all of us.
Thank you, graduates, for allowing us to be part of your journey.

enforcement and prepare for her future roles in leadership.
While Monique has been busy with work, school, and parenthood, she hopes to increase her involvement in the community, pursue coaching basketball, and be a mentor to the youth of Lake County. Monique enjoys being active, working out, and spending time with her family.
Monique Barnes is a driven individual from Tavares, FL who has always enjoyed learning and being knowledgeable. She graduated from Tavares High in 2012 and continued her education at Indian River State College and Tidewater Community College. Monique's educational and career goals include pursuing her master's degree within the next year, and becoming a supervisor at LCSO when she becomes eligible. Her desire to become a supervisor is fueled by her belief that her presence could increase diversification in law enforcement in Lake County so that the full community is represented.
After graduation, Monique plans to take a small hiatus from school until about spring of 2024 to relax. During this time, she will be looking for an institution to complete her master's to increase her knowledge on leadership within an organization. She will also pursue specialized training in law
Dr. Shelly Greig has been the most impactful faculty member for Monique during her time at LSSC. Dr. Greig fostered an environment that helped Monique learn how to be a leader. Monique's favorite memory from LSSC was getting on the stage at graduation and delivering the commencement speech.
Monique's advice for a new Lakehawk is to stay persistent and not quit. What surprised Monique during her journey at LSSC was her ability to do so well. Monique credits the college's ability to build a program that met her needs and desires. The Strategic Leadership program was just perfect for her in every way.
Monique's determination and dedication to her education and career goals are inspiring. Her passion for diversifying law enforcement in Lake County and being a leader in the community will undoubtedly make a positive impact. We are honored to have Monique Barnes as our commencement speaker.

career path because it allows her to explore different paths and find the perfect fit.
Outside of her academic achievements, Isabelle has been involved in her community and various organizations. She was a Student Orientation Leader during her time at LSSC and also interned at Find Feed and Restore in the Fall 2022 semester. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her loved ones and going to the beach.
Isabelle Medlin, a Lake County Virtual School alumna from Clermont, Florida, is a bright and ambitious individual who has accomplished much in her educational journey. Graduating in June 2020, she earned 48 credits toward an associate degree through Lake Sumter's dual enrollment and early admissions programs. She has since excelled academically, earning a place on the Dean's List for Fall 2021, Spring 2022, and Summer 2022 semesters at Lake Sumter State College. Isabelle has also been recognized on the President's List for Fall 2022 and is expected to be on it again for Spring 2023.

Her educational and career goals are focused on pursuing a career as a Radiology Technician, where she aspires to be a lead technician using the degree she is earning in leadership and organizational management. She is passionate about this
One of the most impactful professors she has had is Matthew Kennedy, who helped her when she first started at LSSC as a nervous 16-year-old student. Her best memory of LSSC was taking American Sign Language and being a SOAR leader, helping students, and leading campus tours.
Isabelle's advice to new Lakehawks is to be confident in their choices, proud of their accomplishments, and aware of the opportunities that come with attending LSSC. She reminds them to take time for themselves, grow academically and individually, and enjoy their time at LSSC because it goes by fast.
Isabelle is grateful for the encouragement and support of Shannon Herrera, who has been instrumental in helping her achieve her goals. Her educational achievements, involvement in the community, and dedication to personal growth make Isabelle a role model for future Lakehawks.
COMMENCEMENT REGALIA
The tradition of the academic dress dates back nearly eight centuries. Scholars, both teachers and students, wore long gowns to keep warm in the damp and drafty halls of learning. Gradually, styles were adopted which were characteristic of the individual college and of the highest academic degree held by the wearer. In 1895, a commission was established to come up with a uniform code for academic costume. Today the gowns, hoods and mortarboards worn by the graduating students of most institutions, including Lake-Sumter State College, follow this code.
At Lake-Sumter State College, certificate and associate degree candidates wear black regalia and baccalaureate degree candidates wear green regalia. Candidates wear a matching square “mortarboard” cap that is traditional for all degrees – a tradition started at Oxford University.
LSSC faculty and staff wear caps, gowns, and hoods representing the institution and academic discipline of their highest earned degree.
The tassel is worn on the right side of the cap until the degree is conferred and moved to the left side as part of the Commencement ceremony.
Appropriate Attire for Formal Academic Regalia
Students are asked to wear professional or business attire underneath their academic regalia. If wearing a dress, ensure it is no longer than your robe. Graduates should ensure dresses or pants that fall below the robe are a dark color. Participants should wear comfortable black shoes.
Members of the U.S. military may wear their dress uniform in lieu of academic regalia. Regalia should not be worn on top of the dress uniform.
Mortarboards may be decorated if the student wishes. Decorated mortarboards should be flat on top of the cap. Any unapproved enhancements to academic regalia must be removed for participation in the Commencement ceremony.
Adornments to Academic Regalia
Cords, stoles, medallions, and tassels representing various academic achievements or other honors are also worn at the discretion a degree-granting institutions. At LSSC, cords and stoles identify the academic discipline of baccalaureate candidates and recognize achievements such as graduation honors, membership in honorary societies or select groups, service in the U.S. Armed Forces, and other student leadership positions.
These adornments to the regalia must be reviewed and approved by the College’s Convocation Committee for inclusion in the academic regalia. Only approved adornments are allowed at Commencement ceremonies.
