college life , skills for life , apprenticeships college life & enrichment Enrichment Every full-time student at the College has the opportunity to participate in the enrichment programme. For those under 19 this is a mandatory part of the course. Enrichment comprises an extensive programme of activities which usually takes place on Wednesday afternoons, together with College events and trips. Opportunities exist to participate in sporting activities, computer classes, beauty groups, student newspapers, photography and drama to name a few. New ideas are always welcome.

Students’ Council We encourage students to join the Students’ Council so they can get the best out of College life. If you are interested, you could be a Course Representative on the Students’ Council. This not only looks at leisure and charity activities but also gives an opportunity for students to make suggestions for further improvements to their facilities and services.

Common Room - only at Houghton Regis All students have access to either social areas or common rooms. There are social areas at the Dunstable Campus and Leighton Buzzard Campus. The Houghton Regis Campus has a common room, where you can play table tennis, video games, watch TV or listen to music.

Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) All students are given their own student account with a user name for access to the College network. “Moodle” is the virtual learning environment which provides access to course materials, assignments and learning activities from anywhere with an internet connection. Here students can keep up to date with College news and information.

skills for life Skills for Life Whatever your needs are, the Skills for Life team is here for you. All students can have additional support while they are on their course if they feel it will help them succeed. There is a team of Tutors to give additional support to students who need to further develop their reading, writing, spelling or study skills, or who may want extra help with basic maths. They can also offer specialist help to those students to whom English is not a first language. If you are, or think you may be dyslexic, specialist assessment, counselling and support are available. You may be a student who has not been in education for a while and you need some hints and tips with examination techniques or essay writing. If you need help because of a disability or medical condition, the team is there to give whatever support is necessary and make all practical arrangements to ensure a successful learning experience. Functional Skills In addition to the chosen academic or vocational course, 16-18 year old students are required to develop essential Functional Skills. These are skills that potential employers consider to be of the greatest importance in the workplace. There are Functional Skills at Entry level, Level 1 and Level 2 in the following subjects: • • •

English Information Communication Technology Mathematics.

Functional Skills are integrated into vocational courses. The Functional Skills level will be tailored to each student’s needs based on GCSE results and online diagnostic assessments. The level of Functional Skills the student wishes to achieve will also be discussed at tutorials.

apprenticeships University is not for everyone and the apprenticeship route to developing the knowledge and skills needed to perform effectively at work can be an ideal alternative for further study. By successfully completing your chosen full-time College course you can progress onto a work-based programme as an Apprentice. In some cases by completing your College course and functional skills you will have already completed two of the three essential components of a full apprenticeship. The full-time College course, typically lasting one or two years, can produce the knowledge element and the Functional Skills needed; the competency based element can then be completed when working for an employer after leaving your full-time College course. There are a wide variety of apprenticeships available across the country in many different sectors. Those offered at the College through Chiltern Business Training include Business Administration, Customer Service, Engineering and IT. For more details of the full offer please refer to pages 20 – 21. Examples of current College courses that are being labelled in the guide as progressing on to an Apprenticeship include: •

City & Guilds Certificate in Engineering Level 2

BTEC Subsidiary Diploma in IT

City & Guilds Plumbing

Safeguarding Safeguarding the wellbeing of children and vulnerable adults is the responsibility of us all. If a student, or a member of staff, has a concern regarding the wellbeing of a child (or young person under 18) they can contact one of the College’s Safeguarding Officers. The College recognises its responsibility under the Child Protection Act and works to support those affected by these issues. Please be aware that staff have a duty of care towards their students and, in accordance with Central Bedfordshire College’s Safeguarding Policy, staff are required to disclose any information relating to the abuse of a child to one of the College’s Safeguarding Officers. Confidentiality regarding disclosure of abuse cannot be guaranteed. Information booklets from the DfES - ‘What to do if you’re worried a child is being abused’ - are available on request from Student Welfare and are also stored in the College’s Library. If a student has a concern but would rather discuss it with an external organisation, a referral to an appropriate agency can be made. NVQs / Work-based qualifications – nationally recognised qualifications for each sector of employment and related directly to the persons work. BTEC Diplomas, Certificates and Awards – the BTEC study level is dependent on previous qualifications and experience. Our BTEC qualifications cover a wide variety of course areas, enabling you to specialise in your chosen field. Foundation Degrees & HNCs – enable you to study a Higher Education level course at your local College. The Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) – is the new framework for creating and accrediting qualifications in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. It’s at the heart of a major reform of the vocational qualifications system, which will become simpler to understand and use. The QCF: • • •

Recognises smaller steps of learning and enables learners to build up qualifications bit by bit Helps learners achieve skills and qualifications that meet industry needs Enables work-based training to be nationally recognised.

Every unit and qualification in the QCF has a credit value that tells you how long it takes to complete – one credit represents 10 hours’ work. Each unit and qualification also has its own level, between Entry level and Level 8, to show how difficult it is.

Students studying on any of our programmes are able to progress on to the next level once they have completed their course. The table opposite shows the entry requirements for each level of study. However, if you are unsure about which level to enter education please speak to a member of staff who will be happy to help with your query.

A ccess to H i g he r E d u cat i o n D i p lo m a : I n t r o d u c t i o n This is a Level Three (A Level standard) programme specifically designed for learners aged 19 and over who would like to prepare to study a Higher Education course. It is ideal for adults who may not have studied for a long time and now wish to return to education. Access courses give learners the skills as well as the qualifications they need to take their studies further. The courses are designed to build confidence and personal development and to enable learners to work independently and successfully when they reach Higher Education level. An Access course can be completed in one year as a full-time student; however, you can take a part-time option and complete the programme over two years. No formal qualifications are required, although, after initial enquiry, learners are invited to an initial information session during which English and Maths levels will be assessed. This is to ensure that prospective learners are working at around Level Two (GCSE Level) at the start of their course.

Timetables The full-time timetable is usually arranged over three days each week. Most classes are held between 9.15 am and 4.00 pm. Entry Requirements • You must be at least 19 years of age or over. • Level Two Literacy skills • Level One Numeracy skills The College offers a Level Two Access Programme which may be suitable preparation for Access itself for some learners.

Access courses are offered at the Dunstable Campus

Successful completion of an Access course means you can apply to study at Universities across the country through the UCAS scheme. The College has a Guaranteed Interview arrangement with the University of Bedfordshire. The Awarding Body is OCNOTC. All Access courses are available at the Dunstable Campus, and some at Leighton Buzzard. Essential information The Access Diploma is a national qualification. Like University courses, it is credit-based. It is assessed through graded assignments and projects.

• • • • •

Nursing, Midwifery and Professions allied to Medicine (eg Radiography, Paramedic, Audiology, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy) Teacher Education (leading to Initial Teacher Training and other Education-related degrees) Humanities and Social Sciences Business Science

To achieve the Diploma, you must achieve 60 Credits, at least 45 of which must be at Level Three. Your University offer will be based on the number of Credits you achieve at Merit or Distinction. Some University courses also require a record of relevant working/voluntary experience. We will discuss these requirements with you at interview.
