Welcome to the first Central Bedfordshire College Higher Education course guide. In recent months we have changed identity from Dunstable College to become Central Bedfordshire College. This move better reflects the College’s growing presence within the region, with our courses delivered in several locations providing the best resources and facilities close to where you live or work.

Facilities Central Bedfordshire College takes great pride in giving you the skills you need for all aspects of life. Whatever you want to learn, the choices are endless. Our Higher Education courses are delivered at THE Store in Dunstable, and at the Houghton Regis campus. We have a number of excellent facilities across the different campuses to help make your experience at Central Bedfordshire College a successful one. This includes a well equipped IT workshop, a virtual learning facility, refectory, gym and fully operational beauty and hair salons. The Student Welfare Team is committed to helping you to access services and provide support that will enable you to get the most out of your time here. This can include information regarding transport, accommodation, financial assistance, childcare and NUS cards. There is also a dedicated careers advisor who can provide you with careers information, advice and guidance prior, during and post College. The new HE Centre - called ‘The Store’ - is part of the modern Grove Park Complex and houses Creative Arts courses on the first floor, and IT courses and the Apple Training Centre on the ground floor. This means that on successful completion of your course you will gain a University qualification. In addition, you will get all the benefits of being a University of Bedfordshire student with the convenience of studying at your local College. the store THE STORE is our Higher Education Centre situated within the Grove Park complex in Dunstable. Housing the Apple Training Centre (AATCe), a cafe and a variety of HE courses, the centre offers students a modern and relaxed environment to study in. The Apple Training Centre is a suite of iMacs all of which have the latest software including Adobe Creative Suite, Quark, Final Cut Pro and DVD Studio Pro to name but a few. More Information on these courses is available at THE STORE. Another important aspect of Higher Education is also located here; The Incubator. If you have the ambition to run your own business, Central Bedfordshire College can support you in this. The Incubator aims to give creatives a footing in a competitive market and develop business sustainability. The Incubator also succeeded in winning membership to a unique network for rising stars from across the UK. ‘Courvoisier the Future 500’ is an exclusive members-only club, enabling graduates to network with innovative business minds and creative talent.

Financial information TU IT I O N F EES A N D T U I T I O N F E E LOAN S The College is affiliated to the University of Bedfordshire and follow their fee structure accordingly. At the time of publication the University of Bedfordshire has yet to publish their fees for the academic year 2011/12. If you are a full time Home or EU undergraduate student normally resident in the UK/EU you may apply for a tuition fee loan to pay your fees (see Student Loan below). The fees for 2011/12 will be higher than the fees in 2010/11. For your information 2010/11 the fees were: Foundation Degrees - £1,310 per annum* BA (Hons) - £3,290 per annum* HNCs - £3,000 per annum* Please Note: If you are thinking about studying part-time, are undertaking a degree for the second time or are considering studying some health-related courses such as Nursing, Midwifery or Social Work, different fees will apply. STUDENT M A I N T E N A N C E LOA N If you are a UK resident you may be eligible for a student maintenance loan to cover your living costs. You will only start to repay your loan once you have graduated and are earning £15,000 per year or more*. To apply for a student maintenance loan visit www.direct.gov.uk . Disabled students may be eligible for a Disabled Students’ Allowance and students with dependents may also be awarded extra financial support.

The grant is to help you pay for student accommodation and other living costs while you are on a full-time higher education course. OVER SEAS ST UDEN T S* If you are a full-time student from a non-European Community country or if you have not lived in the UK for the three years preceding your application, overseas fees apply as follows: • Honours and Foundation Degrees for 10/11 were £8,950 per annum • Part-time fees are calculated on a pro-rate basis. Please note that the British Council has stated that you will require at least £8000 per annum on top of your tuition fees to cover your rent, food and overhead expenses. The College requires a minimum of 65% of fees due before you enter the UK to undertake your chosen course of study. The balance of fees due is payable at enrolment.

FO R MA L I N T E RV I E W Admissions Tutors will need to be satisfied as to the commitment and level of attainment in all cases. Creative Arts students will also be required to provide a portfolio of work.

CO NDI T I O N A L A N D U N CO N DI T I O N AL O FFER S A conditional offer of a place at College means that you need to meet certain conditions, e.g. you need to achieve certain qualifications and grades to be able to start the course. These will be outlined to you on UCAS.

MO D E S O F ST U DY All of the courses featured in this guide will state whether they can be studied on either a full-time or part-time basis. Student loans, grants and bursaries are only available to students studying on a full-time basis. 8


MAT UR E ST UDEN T S We actively encourage mature students to apply. While applicants over 23 need not have any formal qualifications, admissions tutors will need to be satisfied as to the commitment and level of attainment of the applicant in all cases.

T H E C LEAR I N G PR O C ESS If you do not gain a place, either because you applied late or did not achieve the grades you were expecting, you may still apply through the clearing process for an alternative course. Running from the third week in August through to the third week in September, the courses usually start within a few weeks of clearing. Visit www.ucas.ac.uk for more information.

C R EAT I VE A RT S CO UR S ES ON LY You may list up to five choices for simultaneous consideration by the institutions. Simply list them in the order they appear in the UCAS Directory. Your application needs to be received by UCAS between 1 September of the year proceeding entry and 24 March of the year of entry. However, to allow institutions ample time to review your portfolio, UCAS advise you apply by mid-November. You need to submit your form to UCAS by 24 March in the year of entry, but preferably by 7 March to avoid processing delays.

hnc business This course is designed to provide a specialist vocational programme, linked to a strong work related emphasis. It will provide a thorough grounding in the key concepts and practical skills required in a particular sector - in this case, Management. The HNC consists of eight units, of which four are Core Units: • Business Environment • Managing Financial Resources and Decisions • Organisations and Behaviour • Marketing Principles. As well as a choice of four of the following units: • Research Project • Financial Accounting and Reporting • Marketing Intelligence • Human Resource Management • Business Law.

ENTRY R EQ UIR E M E N T S • Applicants should possess Level 3 qualifications (A Level / BTEC National) or relevant work experience, preferably in a managerial capacity • Applicants will need to show a commitment to studying at this level and be prepared to work hard in meeting assessment deadlines.

ASS ESS MENT All of the units are assessed by coursework, there are no external examinations.

PRO GR ESS IO N The HNC offers learners opportunities to focus on the development of higher level skills in a business context and other attributes that are essential for successful performance in working life. In addition to providing learners with a nationally recognised vocational qualification, learners may progress to a higher qualification such as a degree.

DURATI O N Two years part-time, students will be required to attend 3 hour lectures on two evenings per week for 60 weeks.

FOUNdation diploma in art + Design An exhilarating post A Level course that covers a broad range of art and design skills in preparation for University entry in your specialist area. There are a total of nine units covering the following areas: • Fine Art • Printmaking • Ceramics • Computer Aided Design • Visual Studies • Lens Based Media

• Textile Design & Fashion Design • Surface Pattern • Contextual Studies • 3 Dimensional Studies • Time–Based Media Studies • Graphic Design & Illustration.

There will be educational visits to galleries, exhibitions and museums. Students will also have the opportunity to take part in a residential visit to a European destination in the second term. The Foundation Diploma in Art and Design at Central Bedfordshire College has achieved an excellent reputation, with well above national benchmark grades being awarded to students across all art and design disciplines. You can be confident in the knowledge that over 90% of our students achieved places on degree programmes at their first choice Higher Education Institution. These have included such highly regarded institutions as Kingston University, London College of Fashion and Nottingham Trent University.

Mature students without formal qualifications are also invited to apply. Applicants need a portfolio of work to show at interview and an aptitude and enthusiasm for a career in art and design.

ASSESS MENT Each unit in the first two terms will receive a grade of pass, however the Final major project is graded at pass merit or distinction, and this then will count as the overall achievement grade for the course. Assessment is continuous on completion of assignments, essays and presentations etc. which are designed to enable the learners to achieve the required assessment criteria.

Fda contemporary fine art practice This well established foundation degree aims to focus students’ attention towards contemporary fine art practice within the context of a rapidly developing multi-cultural society. Traditional notions of artistic production are being continually challenged by new and exciting conceptual alternatives. Areas of study include: • Focus on Contemporary Fine Art practice • Incorporation of new technologies, media, film, video etc. • Wide variety of artistic contexts. Whilst traditional artistic practice has depended upon notions of the subject, increasingly, new artistic contexts have more regard for the interplay between technology, contexts for viewing/audience participation and media. This course will enable you to study a wide variety of artistic contexts in which considerations of place or space significantly contribute to the overall effect of a piece of art. You will develop an approach to your own artistic practice through a lecture and seminar series, which will cover contemporary debates relating to aspects such as: • Installation • Site specific work • Moving image • Public arts • …as well as more traditional media.

fda creative + editorial photography The foundation degree gives students a realistic and vocationally driven journey through the various disciplines and genres of photography. Looking technically, culturally and conceptually at how the business of photography sits alongside other forms of visual communication and its role in the marketplace. Students can expect to engage with essential skills and concepts during the first year, gearing up to cover work related and personal project driven work in the second. fda fashion + surface pattern design Fashion design and its closely allied discipline, surface pattern design, are significant entrepreneurial activities within the creative industries, which, in turn, have become major contributors to the British economy. The fashion and clothing industry is diverse, with clothing sometimes being designed and made for a limited, but highly sophisticated clientele, in design studios of no more than ten people. Alternatively, designers can become members of large teams involved in production runs for various retailers, department stores and supermarket outlets such as Next, George, and Top Shop. The textile industry, making woven, knitted and printed fabrics is similarly diverse, ranging from specialist and small production runs to mass-produced fabrics for fashion and furnishings. The course encompasses a diverse range of fashion and surface pattern styles and designs. This allows you to develop skills and knowledge in designing and making, related to the textile and fashion industries, as well as your own particular strengths and interests. In the second year you will be able to develop a major project with an emphasis on either fashion or surface pattern or, as appropriate, a combination of each. 2010 Exhibition

fda graphic design + advertising This programme prepares young creatives as graphic designers, art directors and copywriters for work in the graphic design and advertising industries. You will be able to exploit your creative potential and work confidently and innovatively in the development of design solutions in advertising and visual communications. Areas of study include: • Design process • Computing for graphic designers • Creative typography • Advertising strategies • Professional practise for designers • Visual communication • Cultural contexts. Students are encouraged to develop their own pathways in year two by gaining an understating of the context and culture of graphic design, advertising and visual communication. The HNC in Media will specialise in the moving image pathway, with a concentration on film making methods in both drama and documentary form. There are core units supporting professional practice in the media industry, with optional units that will give creative flair to the development of production projects. The HNC in Performing Arts will specialise in the Performance Pathway with a concentration in both dance and drama elements of the industry. There are core units supporting professional practice in the Performing Arts industry, with optional units that will give a unique creative edge to the development of performance skills. The HNC consists of 10 units, of which 5 are Core Units: • Creative arts professional practice • Creative arts research • Historical context • Developing acting skills • Musical theatre. HNC electrical + electronic engineering The BTEC HNC in Electrical and Electronic Engineering is an 8 unit qualification of which 3 units are mandatory core units. The HNC programme must contain a minimum of 5 units designed at Level 4 or above. The course is designed to provide a specialist vocational programme, linked to a strong work related emphasis. It will provide a thorough grounding in the key concepts and practical skills required in a particular sector- in this case Electrical and Electronic Engineering. The Core Units which candidates must take are: • Analytical Methods • Engineering Science • Project Design, Implementation and Evaluation. This will be followed by a choice of 5 Specialist Units, including Electrical and Electronic Engineering Principles, Managerial Concepts and the Application of Specialist Systems related to the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Industry. This is useful for learners who are already in employment who are looking to continue and progress and gain professional recognition.

HNC advanced practice in work with families + children This part-time course is suitable for professionals wishing to upgrade their qualifications and specialise in the welfare of children and families. The HNC consists of ten units, of which six are core units and four are specialist units. The Core Units which candidates must take are: • Communicating, values and leadership in an Early Years setting • Theories of development - birth to three years • Continuing development • Early Years curriculum, play and learning • Professional practice • Child protection. The specialist units will be chosen in consultation with learners after enrolment, and could include a research project. There is also a requirement for a period of work experience in a childcare or other relevant setting.

The qualification is generic and specialist units have been chosen to ensure relevance to as wide a learner base as possible. The HNC consists of ten units, of which five are Core Units and five are Specialist Units. The Core Units which candidates must take are: • Communication in Health and Care settings • Principles of Practice • Continuous development • Health and Safety • Working in Partnership. fda Educational practice The course is for candidates working in a learning support role and who may like to work towards a BA in Educational Practice. The successful completion of the BA degree allows students the option of applying for a post degree teacher training qualification, such as PGCE or GTP. The course aims to equip candidates with the skills needed to support learning, to develop their ability to reflect on their own practice and to enable them to relate their work in learning support to the wider educational context. Assessment is through assignments, presentations and work-based portfolios. There are no examinable components. Certificate in Education (PCE) + Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE: PCE) The course provides core professional training in teaching for those working in the area of Lifelong Learning; it is based on the new LLUK National Standards for Teaching and Learning. The course is suitable for anyone teaching in: • Further education • Higher education • Training and education in industry and commerce • Training in public sector services such as the NHS, the police and social services. The course comprises of a single programme which may be taken at two levels, either the Certificate or PGCE. The programme is a part-time course over two years. Sessions are weekly with opportunities to meet students from other centres on at least two mandatory study days on Saturdays throughout the year. The taught sessions need to be supplemented with extensive private study.

CO UR S E CO N T E N T S The modules you will study reflect the domains of the new teaching standards: • Professional Values and Practice • Learning and Teaching • Planning for Learning • Assessment for Learning • Access and Progression. You will also be required to complete a programme of observed teaching which links practice to course theory.
