FdA Fashion & Surface Pattern Design Page 18

Course Codes:

Fashion design and its closely allied discipline, surface pattern design, are significant entrepreneurial activities within the creative industries, which in turn have become major contributors to the British economy. The fashion and clothing industry is diverse, with clothing sometimes being designed and made for a limited, but highly sophisticated clientele, in design studios of no more than ten people. Alternatively, designers can become members of large teams involved in production runs for various retailers, department stores and supermarket outlets such as Next, George and Top Shop. The textiles industry, making woven, knitted and printed fabrics is similarly diverse, ranging from specialist and small production runs to mass-produced fabrics for fashion and furnishings. The course encompasses a diverse range of fashion and surface pattern styles and designs. This allows you to develop skills and knowledge in designing and making, related to the textile and fashion industries, as well as your own particular strengths and interests. In the second year you will be able to develop a major project with an emphasis on either fashion or surface pattern or, as appropriate, a combination of each. FULL-TIME: 20904/F12MA

Practical Projects are at the heart of learning activities are a key learning and assessment tool within the course. Formative and summative assessments of practical assignments are seen as an important method of ensuring your understanding, the development of relevant cognitive and practical skills and personal progress. Continuous appraisal by both the students themselves and their tutors is a feature of the formative assessment carried out in relation to all the assignments that are an integral part of the course. An accumulation of the work that is done in response to learning activities is assessed summatively at the end of each unit.

Assessments based on course work and presentations. Development of students’ writing skills, helping you to express ideas in a variety of ways and styles and to develop academic writing skills that are of particular benefit in producing the final year contextual rationale for your major project. Portfolio reviews are a key means of assessing but they are also important for collating work for a professional portfolio. This instils in students the right attitudes towards professional work whereby you can use your portfolio to promote yourself in professional contexts. Key Skills are embedded in the teaching and learning of the course and will be taken into account in all assessments.
