PARKING The Music & Dramatic Arts Building (MDA), which houses the Shaver Theatre and the Studio Theatre, is located at the intersection of Dalrymple Drive and Infirmary Road. The School of Music is directly across Infirmary Road from the MDA and houses the Recital Hall. The Reilly Theatre is located on Tower Drive on the south side of campus. The LSU Union Theater is located inside the LSU Student Union on Highland Road. Parking is available in the parking lots surrounding the venues in the Music & Dramatic Arts Building, the School of Music, and the Reilly Theatre after 4:30 p.m. For events located in the LSU Union Theater, parking is available in the Union Square parking garage located on Highland Road.

CONCERT SPECTACULAR: MUSIC SPEAKS FRIDAY, JANUARY 30 @ 7:30 P.M. LSU UNION THEATER

The LSU School of Music’s Concert Spectacular offers the chance to see some of the best and brightest young musical talent on stage in one celebratory concert. Music often can express emotions beyond words, thus the inspiration for this year’s concert, taken from Danish author Hans Christian Andersen: “Where words fail, music speaks.”

SHAVER THEATRE | PRESENTED BY SWINE PALACE By Arthur Miller • Directed by Jane Page During WWII Joe Keller and Herbert Deever ran an airplane parts machine shop. Deever went to prison because the parts were defective, causing many deaths. Keller went free and prospered. The shadow of this misfortune combines with the young Keller son reported missing during the war to dominate the action. The climax showing the reaction of a son to his guilty father is a fitting conclusion to this intense play.

LSU JAZZ SHOWCASE FEBRUARY 19 @ 7:30 P.M. LSU UNION THEATER

With guest saxophonist Denis DiBlasio, this once-a-season concert features all the LSU Jazz Groups, including the Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Lab Band, and chamber groups.

LSU SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 26 @ 7:30 P.M. LSU UNION THEATER

This concert will feature two world premieres. Willis Delony will perform Stephen Dankner’s piano concerto, conducted by Carlos Riazuelo. Mr. Dankner was the composer-in-residence with the LPO from 2004-2007. Also included will be the performance of Remembrance for Symphony Orchestra, composed by by the Venezuelan-American composer Alfonso Tenreiro, work commissioned by School of Music longtime friend and alumna Janice H. Pellar (’73).

REILLY THEATRE | PRESENTED BY LSU THEATRE

Music: Michael Gore • Lyrics: Dean Pitchford • Book: Lawrence D. Cohen Based on the best-selling novel by Stephen King • Directed by Tamara Fisch Carrie White is a misfit and outcast who is bullied by the popular crowd, and invisible to everyone else. But she’s just discovered a special power and isn’t afraid to use it. This musical is set in the present day, and features a book by Lawrence D. Cohen (screenwriter of the classic film), and lyrics by Dean Pitchford (Fame, Footloose).

LSU A CAPPELLA CHOIR THURSDAY, MARCH 5 @ 7:30 P.M. UNIVERSITY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH

The LSU A Cappella Choir performs at home before heading off on their annual spring tour with stops in Texas schools, churches, and recital halls. In this kick-off concert, led by John Dickson the choir continues a long tradition of fine performances.

SHAVER THEATRE | PRESENTED BY LSU OPERA Written by Hector Berlioz • Directed by Dugg McDonough Sung in French • English dialogue from original play and other sources Berlioz returned to opera and to his two favorite writers, Virgil and Shakespeare, creating a lighter and wittier comic opera from the Bard’s Much Ado About Nothing.

LSU WIND ENSEMBLE TUESDAY, APRIL 14 @ 7:30 P.M. LSU UNION THEATER

The LSU Wind Ensemble concludes the year with a program entitled “Frozen Landscapes” with guest composer John Mackey and a performance of his powerful Frozen Cathedral conducted by Damon Talley. Also on the program: are Beethoven’s Octet in E flat major, Carter Pann’s thrilling Slalom, and Steven Stucky’s Music for the Funeral of Queen Mary, led by guest conductor Dennis Llinás.

Ana has an adoring husband, the perfect job, and her greatest passion: Book Club. Two Radio Operas by Bohuslav Martinů • Directed by Dugg McDonough Presented by LSU Opera and performed in the original Czech. In Voice of the Forest two lovers are finally united in joyous love. In the satirical Comedy on the Bridge, an assortment of characters gets trapped on a bridge between two warring armies.

LSU UNION THEATER

The LSU Symphony Orchestra and LSU A Cappella Choir perform the Mozart Requiem Mass in D Minor, K. 626 for soloists, chorus, and orchestra. Also performing on this concert will be Christopher Lowry, first-prize winner of the LSU School of Music Concerto Competition. Conducted by Carlos Riazuelo.

ATTACCA STRING QUARTET TUESDAY, JANUARY 27 @ 7:30 P.M. RECITAL HALL

The Attacca Quartet, now in its eleventh season, was formed at the Juilliard School in 2003 and made their professional debut in 2007 as part of the Artists International Winners Series. They have received the 2013 National Federation of Music Clubs Centennial Chamber Music Award, the Arthur Foote Award from the Harvard Musical Association, and the Lotos Prize in the Arts.

ARIANA STRING QUARTET THURSDAY, MARCH 12 @ 7:30 P.M. RECITAL HALL

Formed in 1992, the ASQ garnered national attention by winning Grand Prize in the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition and First Prize in both the Coleman and Carmel Chamber Music Competitions. The ASQ has appeared throughout North America, South America, Europe and Asia and has collaborated with many of the world’s finest musicians, including members of the Vermeer, Tokyo, and Juilliard Quartets.

The Ying Quartet combines communicative performances with a fearlessly imaginative view of chamber music in today’s world. Now in its second decade, the Quartet has established itself as an ensemble of the highest quality in its tours across the United States and abroad. ALESSANDRA FERIS, PIANO THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 5 7:30 P.M. Alessandra Feris has achieved top prizes in national and international competitions and received prestigious scholarships and awards. She has served as an adjudicator in competitions in Brazil and in the U.S., and has been a guest artist at renowned universities and festivals. Alessandra is devoted to the diffusion of Brazilian music, and often premieres works by Brazilian contemporary composers.

THE ATHENIA TRIO MONDAY, MARCH 2 7:30 P.M. The Athenia Trio presents fun and interactive performances featuring flute, oboe, and bassoon. Founding members Alison Brown Sincoff, flute, Michele Fiala, oboe, and Matthew Morris, bassoon have performed in the United States, Canada, Italy, Germany, England, France, Russia, Panama, and Argentina. The group enjoys discovering unusual works for the ensemble and continues to add to the repertoire.

TONY CARAMIA AND WILLIS DELONY, PIANO FRIDAY, MARCH 13 7:30 P.M. Join duo jazz pianists Tony Caramia of the Eastman School of Music and LSU faculty Willis Delony as they explore some of America’s unique musical treasures. Featured on the program are Billy Strayhorn’s “Tonk,” originally performed by Strayhorn and Duke Ellington, and a new composition by Joseph Makholm entitled “Monk’s Moods,” on which Caramia and Delony will be joined by LSU faculty Brett Dietz on percussion.

H2 QUARTET SUNDAY, MARCH 15 7:30 P.M. The award-winning h2 saxophone quartet will present a high-energy program of compelling new music from their third and fourth CDs, Groove Machine and Hard Line.

ELIZABETH FUTRAL, SOPRANO FRIDAY, MARCH 20 7:30 P.M. Soprano Elizabeth Futral has established herself as one of the major coloratura sopranos in the world today. Her repertoire includes Handel, Mozart, Bellini, Donizetti, Verdi, and Ricky Ian Gordon.

TIMM WIND QUINTET TUESDAY, JANUARY 20 7:30 P.M. The Timm Wind Quintet presents a program that includes Ravel, Ibert, Medaglis, and Schickele. Timm Quintet members are Katherine Kemler, flute; Johanna Cox, oboe; Deborah Chodacki, clarinet; Darrel Hale, bassoon; and Seth Orgel, horn.

ESPEN LILLESLATTEN, VIOLA AND MICHAEL GURT, PIANO SUNDAY, MARCH 1 3:00 P.M. YUNG-CHIAO WEI, DOUBLE BASS THURSDAY, APRIL 2 7:30 P.M. Yung-chiao Wei will perform new works created with support from the Awards to Louisiana Artists and Scholars (ATLAS) grant. Program includes award-winning composers Matthew Tommasini’s Towards the Wall, Minghsiu Yen’s Parched Summer, and Wei’s transcription of the Brahms Cello Sonata in F and Chopin Polonaise Brillante.
