EDGAR MEYER, BASSIST THURSDAY, JANUARY 28 • 7:30 P.M. SOM RECITAL HALL Hailed by The New Yorker as the “most remarkable virtuoso of his instrument,” Mr. Meyer’s unparalleled bass playing plus gift for composition have brought him international acclaim. Myer’s Double Concerto for Double Bass and Violin, premiered July 2012 with Joshua Bell at the Tanglewood Music Festival with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He joined cellist Yo-Yo Ma for “The Goat Rodeo Sessions” CD, which was awarded the 2012 Grammy® Award for Best Folk Album.

CONCERT SPECTACULAR SATURDAY, JANUARY 30 • 7:30 P.M. UNION THEATER A musical smörgåsbord that introduces music lovers to the variety of excellent music offered at LSU! Come to Concert Spectacular where the audience is surrounded by sound as LSU’s very best student soloists, chamber groups, and ensembles perform. Groups performing will be the LSU Wind Ensemble, A Cappella Choir, Jazz Ensemble, Piano and Chamber Group plus the newly formed LSU Jazz Guitar Ensemble.

PROKOFIEV SYMPOSIUM FINAL CONCERT SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 27 • 7:30 P.M. UNION THEATER This spring, LSU will host an international three-day Prokofiev Symposium in February 2016. The symposium’s finale concert will feature the LSU Orchestra and pianists Michael Gurt and Gregory Sioles performing a world premiere of Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 6. The piece Premiere of Music for the Athletes by Sergey Prokofiev will also be performed by Michael Gurt with movement choreographed by Sandra Parks.

A GALA TRIBUTE TO DR. ROBERT GRAYSON LSU OPERA AND LSU SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA FRIDAY, APRIL 29 • 7:30 P.M. UNION THEATER Join the LSU Symphony Orchestra and the vocal talents of the faculty, students and alumni of the School of Music for a special tribute evening celebrating Dr. Grayson’s three decades of service to LSU Opera and Voice.

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 29 • 7:30 P.M. • SOM RECITAL HALL Founded in 2014, the Logos String Quartet has performed worldwide to support the LSU School of Music’s outreach mission. Violinists Espen Lilleslatten and Roxana Pavel Goldstein, violist Elias Goldstein, and cellist Dennis Parker will perform works by Beethoven and Britten.

CUARTETO LATINOAMERICANO STRING QUARTET WEDNESDAY, APRIL 13 • 7:30 P.M. • SOM RECITAL HALL

Lauded worldwide as extraordinary, passionate and skilled musicians with the ability to elicit intense emotion and whose music excites and moves audiences to enthusiastic applause, the Cuarteto Latinoamericano String Quartet puts audiences under a Spanish spell. According to The Los Angeles Times, “Any quartet we’re likely to hear will be hard pressed to equal, much less surpass, the playing of the Cuarteto Latinoamericano.”

FREDERIC CHIU, PIANO MANSHIP GUEST ARTIST

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 26 • 7:30 P.M. • SOM RECITAL HALL Pianist Frederic Chiu joins us in an all-Prokofiev program as part of the three-day international “Symposium on Prokofiev and the Russian Tradition.” He has released over 20 recordings, including the complete piano works of Prokofiev, and works of Chopin, Liszt, Ravel, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Rossini and Grieg. Chiu’s program “Deeper Piano Studies” is a philosophic and holistic approach to piano playing and has been presented at the Juilliard School, Indiana University’s Jacob School of Music, the Manhattan School of Music, the New England Conservatory and the Banff Centre Award for Best Folk Album.

JEFF BRADETICH, DOUBLE BASS MANSHIP GUEST ARTIST

SATURDAY, MARCH 5 • 7:30 P.M. • SOM RECITAL HALL Jeff Bradetich is regarded as one of the leading performers and teachers of the double bass in the US. At 16, he had his professional concerto debut. Bradetich was appointed to the orchestra of the Lyric Opera of Chicago at 19. Since his 1982 New York City debut in Carnegie Recital Hall, he has performed 500+ concerts on four continents including his London debut in Wigmore Hall in 1986. Winner of many major solo competitions, Bradetich has been featured on CBS, CNN, BBC, CBC and NPR. If you love double bass, this is a concert not to be missed! BIN HUANG, VIOLIN ASIAN GUEST ARTIST

MONDAY, MARCH 28 • 7:30 P.M. • SOM RECITAL HALL Bin Huang, one of China’s most outstanding violinists, acquired international attention at fourteen when she won the Junior Wieniawski International Violin Competition in Lubin, Poland. With additional international competition wins including the Paganini International Violin Competition in Genoa, Italy and the Munich International Music Competition, Ms. Huang has been universally lauded for her interpretive and technical skills. The Baltimore Sun hailed her as “a talent that leaves a listener flabbergasted.” She will play a violin recital with virtuosic solo pieces by Bach, Ernst, Paganini and Ysaÿe. WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 3 • 7:30 P.M. • SOM RECITAL HALL Described as a “sensitive, elegant soloist” with a “subtle refined style” by Gramaphone Magazine and as a “meditative and thoughtful” player by the American Record Guide, Jared Hauser has performed internationally as a soloist and a chamber musician. This Louisiana concert will include Mozart’s Oboe Quartet, Tomasi’s Evocations and Britten’s Fantasy Quartet.

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 12 • 7:30 P.M. • SOM RECITAL HALL Texas State University Professor of Violin, Ms. Ledbetter has been the principal violin or concertmaster with the New York’s Musica Bella Orchestra, Broadway Bach Ensemble, Santa Fe Symphony and Rochester Symphony Orchestra. University of Wisconsin Eau Claire Associate Professor of Piano, Owen Lovell (pictured) performs as “Duo Paradox” with violinist Lynn Ledbetter having delighted audiences at various venues including New York City’s Kennedy Center.

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 19 • 7:30 P.M. • SOM RECITAL HALL Violinist Tami Lee Hughes captivates audiences with her lavish sound, beauty and grace. Her debut solo album, Legacy: Violin Music of African-American Composers, gained worldwide critical acclaim. Joining soprano Marcia Porter and pianist Marcena Kinney, violinist Hughes will perform music by contemporary African-American composers such as Leslie Adams, Gary Powell Nash and Irene Britton Smith.

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 22 • 7:30 P.M. • SOM RECITAL HALL A highly praised tenor, David Tayloe has sung with the Contemporary Opera in New York City, Santa Fe Opera, Opera Carolina, Piedmont Opera Company and LSU Opera. At LSU, Tayloe performed Gastone in La Traviata, the title role in Bernstein’s Candide, and as Mozart in Mozart and Salieri. Pianist Christopher Reed will accompany Tayloe as he sings the complete the complete song cycle of Schubert’s Winterreise. Winner of the Jesse Kneisel Lieder Competition, Reed is currently a voice and opera coach at Colorado State University.

MARCH 3-5 AT 7:30 P.M. MARCH 6 AT 3:00 P.M. PRESENTED BY LSU OPERA • SHAVER THEATRE Serious opera that is funny! Italian composer Rossini was 21 when he created L’Italiana in Algeri. This opera perfectly blends his talent of mixing serious topics with funny opera, creating a work that remains relevant today. The beautiful Isabella sails off to Algiers in search of her lover Lindoro, held prisoner by the tyrant Mustafa. However, her ship runs aground and an adventure ensues. This opera includes pirates, concubines, eunuchs and a 19th century Turkish seaside palace with beautiful and brilliant arias and a virtuosity that is truly Rossini.

Hear new, audience-friendly works of the lyric theater that have greatly enriched our world with adaptations of great literature and works inspired by art and themes of war. LSU Opera is thrilled to celebrate this American artistic renaissance of the past decade, highlighting operas based on works such as The Grapes of Wrath, Moby Dick and Cold Mountain.

LSU A CAPPELLA CHOIR ENGLAND TOUR CONCERT SUNDAY, APRIL 24 AT 3:00 P.M. FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH LSU A Cappella Choir will represent the United States in a gala concert at the summer 2016 Association of British Choral Directors Convention in Winchester, England. While in England, the choir will perform at Kings’ and St. John’s Colleges, Cambridge University, Ely Cathedral, St. Paul’s Cathedral, London, The Royal Chapel of St. George’s, Windsor, and Winchester Cathedral. This April 24 concert is a benefit to raise funds for the England tour. A commissioned work, Batter my heart three person’d God by J. A. C. Redford will be premiered at this concert. Although admission to this concert is free, donations will be accepted to assist in funding the A Cappella Choir’s England Tour.

PRESENTED BY LSU THEATRE FEBRUARY 17-28 REILLY THEATRE Playwright Lynn Nottage draws upon the screwball films of the 1930’s to take a funny and irreverent look at racial stereotypes in Hollywood. A seventy-year journey through the life of Vera Stark, a headstrong African-American maid.

PRESENTED BY SWINE PALACE APRIL 13-24 REILLY THEATRE The place is a rooming house in the French Quarter of New Orleans in the late 1930’s. As narrated by The Writer, the action is concerned with the interlocking lives of the various residents. Filled with evocative memories and sharply etched portraits of its singular characters, it is a series of engrossing scenes woven together into a rich and revealing tapestry.

The LSU Symphony Orchestra’s repertoire encompasses established orchestral masterworks from the Baroque to the twentieth century plus contemporary composer pieces. This concert will focus on “The Russian Tradition” with Alexander Glazionov’s Concerto for Saxaphone and Orchestra and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No 6, Pathetique.

The LSU A Cappella Choir will join its voices with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra to perform Vilvaldi’s Gloria. Written by Antonio Vivaldi in 1715, Gloria is the hymn “Gloria in excelsis Deo,” whose words are an integral part of the Ordinary of the Mass and dates from the 4th Century. LSU double bass professor Yung-chiao Wei will perform with her long-time pianist Chao-i Chou. Works include her transcription of the Elgar Cello Concerto and Bach 1st Cello Suite.

WEDNESDAY, MAR. 2 Roxana Pavel Goldstein, a native of Romania, has won numerous prizes at major competitions including First and Second Prize at the Cita di Stessa International Competition in Italy, as well as First Prize in the Rembrandt Chamber Music Competition.

For over 10 years, he was president of the Frances Clark Center for Keyboard Pedagogy. As a Manship guest artist, Blickenstaff will host a workshop and lecture at LSU.

The annual Louisiana Bass Fest brings LSU bass studio and young bassists together for a weekend of contribution, collaboration and inspiration. Featuring chamber music performances with combinations of guest artists, LSU faculty, LSU bass studio and young bassists. A finale concert on March 5 at 8:30 p.m. in the SOM Recital Hall brings this fest to a crescendo! More info at music.lsu.edu/bassfest

Swine Palace presents a modern staging of this classic tale of the relationship between Caesar and Brutus and the ultimate betrayal.
