INTRODUCTION

NCAA CHAMPIONSIPS & THE SOUTHEASTERN CONFERENCE Setting the Standard for Intercollegiate Athletics in Swimming and Diving

Over the course of several decades, the Southeastern Conference has been a constant force in swimming and diving. During the 2021 Men’s NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, three schools in the SEC took top-10 spots in the final team rankings. Florida and Georgia finished third and fourth, respectively, with Texas A&M rounding out the top-10. Alongside the three top finishers, Alabama, Missouri and LSU earned enough points to close out the year within the top20 nationally. LSU’s finish at No. 18 was the highest finish for the men’s squad since 2003. To round out the 32 teams that qualified, the SEC also saw the likes of Tennessee and Kentucky compete for the national title. At the 2021 NCAA Division I Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships, Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee earned spots within the top 10 teams at the event, marking the 52nd consecutive season in which the SEC has placed at least one men’s team in the top 10. Since 1969, 141 SEC teams have finished in the NCAA’s top 10. Kentucky finished just outside the top-10 with teams like Texas A&M, Florida, Missouri, and LSU finishing in the top-30.

MEN’S NOTES

WOMEN’S NOTES

• The SEC has had 11 NCAA Men’s Swimming & Diving Championships titles: Tennessee - 1978; Florida - 1983 & 1985; Auburn - 1997, 1999, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009.

• The SEC has had 14 NCAA Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships titles: Florida – 1982, 2010; Georgia – 1999, 2000, 2001, 2005, 2013, 2014, 2016; Auburn – 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007.

• 2021 marked the 52nd consecutive year that the SEC has had at least one team in the top 10 of the NCAA Men’s Swimming & Diving Championships. The SEC has placed a total of 143 teams in the top 10 at the NCAA Championships since 1969. The 2020 season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which caused a gap year in this trend.

• With Texas A&M earning the third spot at the 2018 NCAA Championships, an SEC school had finished on the podium in the Championships every year since 1999. That streak was broken when Stanford, Cal and Michigan took the top-3 spots in 2019.

• SEC athletes in men’s swimming & diving have captured a total of 190 individual NCAA titles.

4

• Since 1982, the SEC has placed 106 teams in the top 10 at the NCAA Championships. • 251 individual NCAA titles have been captured by SEC athletes.
