What is the Library Resource Centre?

We have set up a brand new 6th form Library Resource Base. This is where you will find resources to help you with:Coursework and essay writing, Research and information, Careers and university applications CoPe and Critical Thinking courses Reading and leisure interests. By consulting with your teachers we have bought lots of extra resources to specifically help you do well and get good marks in all your subjects. Your teachers will expect you to work much more independently than at GCSE level and the AS and A2 courses require you to do plenty of extra research and reading so it is important that you learn to make use of this resource base and its resources. Remember we are here to help you do well.

Who works there?

Ms L Taylor, Librarian Ms R Liles, Senior Library Assistant Ms P Reichard, 6th form Library Assistant Ms J Martin, pt-time Library assistant

How many resources can I borrow?

You can borrow 6 items for 2 weeks. These items can be renewed. Some items may be on OVERNIGHT loan if in demand by other students You will receive overdue letters for any books you have not returned. Please return books on time so other students can borrow them. If you lose a book please let us know.

Information and Advice

Library staff are here to help you in your studies and can direct you to useful resources – books and websites. We regularly produce website lists, guides to researching How do I find a book for information, and guides on in the referencing and bibliographies etc. Ask if you need help!

When are you open?

8.30- 5.00p.m Monday-Thursday 8.30-2.00 Fridays The 6th form Library Resource base is for your use as a quiet study area. Please sign in when arriving and sign out when leaving. You may also use the main LRC but please be aware there may be classes lower down the school who have been booked in to use the LRC. In such cases we must limit use to a maximum of 8 6th formers working quietly On no account are either of the Library Resource Centres to be used as a common room. Any student who fails to recognise this will be asked to leave and may have further access withdrawn.

Careers and Courses

We have a range of resources to help you in your future career, college and university choices. This includes general and specific career guides, course prospectuses and university guides. Ask staff for further information.

You can check the online catalogue – SearchStar. It lets you search for the book you want by author, title, subject and keywords. There is a link on Fronter so you can check to see what we have at home and in school. Fiction (storybooks) are arranged on the shelves alphabetically by the author’s surname. So Charles Dicken’s books are shelved under the letter D. There is a special 6th form Fiction area which includes titles that have been recommended by you’re A level teachers as well as novels of general interest. Non-Fiction (Information) books are arranged on the shelves by subjects and are given a number/code according to the Dewey Decimal Classification system that is used in all libraries. The books are arranged in numerical order from 000-999. Use the Subject Index on the library desk to find the number you need. Guiding on the shelves will also help you. Again specific As and A level texts are shelved in the 6th form resource base but there may be other books of interest in the main library. Reference Books- some books are not available for loan but must be used in the resource base e.g encyclopaedias, dictionaries, atlases etc

Public Libraries

You would also benefit from making use of your local public libraries – particularly the Reference Library. Pick up a membership form in the LRC and check out the Southwark Libraries website: www.southwark.gov.uk/YourServices/LibrariesSection/ This will also give you access to a wide range of further information resources e.g Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, Oxford Reference, Oxford English Dictionary, Grove Music Online, Grove Art Online, Xreferplus and Newsbank ( an online database of major UK newspapers)

Do you only have books?

No – we have Dvds, newspapers and magazines. We keep back copies of a range of periodicals e.g History Today, Geography Review, New Scientist, Nature etc which you should find useful for your courses. We also have printers and photocopier,

Computers

Remember school staff can monitor what you are doing on your computer at all times. You must abide by the ICT agreement you have signed or risk having your access to a computer withdrawn. When using a computer in the 6th form resource base it must be for school work purposes. You may print off your work- just ask for staff permission first. Think about using Search engines such as www.ask.com or metasearch engines such as www.dogpile.com rather than just google. You may get better results. Make use of the weblists we post on Fronter.
