Studio Launch Day - Understanding the Brief

W1-A-1

“The role of the academia as a space of neutral positioning and therefore the student of architecture is to help define the social, economic, political needs to seek for spatial responses for it; but even more importantly, to seek for new questions.”

Understanding the Brief “No More just belong to a response of institutional actors and clients.”

Architecture is political. “ ...a problematic of integration at a social and physical level there where the city admits of a vast development in the congruence of a variety of cultures and situations.”

“ ...the studio will lay down the basis for the future character and identity of the city. An architectural programme responding to transitional current social demands will be debated and carried through design, an urban social incubator resolving connectivity and unification issues.”

Studio Launch Day - Understanding the Brief

Architecture is problem solving. A gentle connection and Transition between old and new, current and future. Understand, Pounder, Analysis, Design.

“The role of the architect is no more constrained, is no more obsolete. The role of the architect gathers and gives value to its spatial and technical capacities, understanding the implications, to take control over a real and more pragmatic contribution.”

“The studio seeks to give a response to those key locations with specific needs of connectivity, they act as connectors between the existing and the proposed, setting the basis for the future character and identity of the coming masterplan opened enough to be prepared and adapted for new future challenges.”

A metaphor for the futility of war and extends the artist's interest in the expressive potential of chance. By eliminating the color-based opposition of one side versus another, Ono dooms any attempt to successfully "play" the game beyond a series of initial moves to ultimate failure. She thus encourages us to consider the aspects of humanity that unite rather than divide. Accessed from Theloop.com.au

Reflection of Assigned Reading “the Urban Revolution”

Key Positions: - Misinterpretation of “urban revolution” as “post-industrial” where urban planning is lack of strategically planning in considering cultural, community life style but purely driven by perceivable economical value. Such fact cause the response of both theory and politics “think big & aim high”. - Balance between main stream economy & social value. - Transition from “industrialisation” to “urbanisation”. A change of mindset is occurring, it is worthwhile slow down and considering what is that people really like and need. - Rural places has been swallowed up by urban fabric rurual places under the dominance of city.

W1-B-1

Understanding the Site - The Bays Precinct

“ The Bays Precinct Urban Renewal Program is a whole-of-government approach being led by UrbanGrowth NSW and includes the following agencies: Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority, the NSW Department of Planning and Environment, Government Property NSW, Transport for NSW, Roads and Maritime Services, Port Authority of NSW and NSW Trade and Investment.”

“Located two kilometres from the CBD, and bounded by the suburbs of Balmain, Rozelle, Lilyfield, Annandale, Glebe and Pyrmont, Bays Precinct is a key part of the Sydney Harbour foreshore. Originally developed as maritime industrial lands, the Bays Precinct is still used for commercial maritime activities. However it also encompasses large areas of land that may see a change of use in the next generation.”

- 2 capital circuit: property & stock - Current planning issue: land used for best economical and financial value. All developments are aiming at maximising the profit rather than considering to design a good urban environment. Merrifield A. Henri Lefebvre: A critical introduction[M]. Taylor & Francis, 2006.

Because of the high expectation and numerous potential in the bays precinct, all different opinions are brought together to create “one voice, once plan and once vision”. "There are too many residential buildings."

There were not many people until start to approach to Pirrama Park. saw a healthy community when saw there were family and friends gathering in the Park doing a sorts of outdoor activities. As walked along the waterfront edge, saw a lot of apartment buildings, which revealed a totally different image compare to what saw before. They were new and modern, lots of young professionals lives there. As a result, feel Pyrmont is a place with a combination of the olds and the news. t would be very nice to combine these two to preserve the traditions and at the same time, revolve the place.

Heavy noise of Traffic

Many new residential developments blocks the view and seperate people from active interaction.

The closed bridge makes people curious about what is on the other side.

isiting Pyrmont for the first time was a very interesting experience to me. went there by bus, when the bus ran through the Harris St (main street), feel this is a place with high historical value by seeing a lots of old terrace houses, local retails shops and cafes.

Heritage landmarks and modernised community shows an intresting integration of the history and current.

n the walkway, it is very intresting in seeing lots of things happening in surroundings. There is many layers of activities taking place. People can see others balcony, busy An ac ridge traffic, water view and other people on the walking jogging or cycling.

fter my exciting visiting to Pyrmont, was so curious about Balmain, on the other side of the water. The public transport once again took me through the main street, Daring treet. The Balmain shows a strong sense of community as the main street was busy with all different people coming out and socialising with each other. started to approach to the waterfront, and saw one by one well-shaded laneways with beautiful houses on their sides. t was so quiet and peaceful. have also realised that there are lots of parks and green lands in Balmain, it is different from the large-scale, well-equipped parks in Pyrmont. They speaks out their history and harmonious with the community.

inally when saw Pyrmont from Balmain, found it was very pondering to look at all the high-rises on the other side. Do people there really need that many residential housing ow do we make it better isiting Balmain, let me notice the importance of maintaining the sense of community, because that is the core of making a place lively.

The views from different side of the white bay create ahigh contrast. Pyrmont is modernised with highrises while Balmain is retaining its natrual community. t is poundering in determining which one is better.

The road is less organised and confusing. The landmark once again gives a good indication of direaction and distance.

Annandale was the last stop of my ourney. The first impression I got from there was the hectic traffic. When I was standing in the enclaves, I feel alone and abandoned. n one side it was fenced off, and on the other side it was the roaring of cars. As I walk along the waterfront edge, I have walked in a park where I start to like about this place. I was exhausted and I was even more discouraged to get to the other side of the massive traffic. I think that leaves a problem to solve when designing for Annandale. How do we connects the community with the waterfront How to minimise the impact of the heavy traffic

The amount of infrastruture decreases as people walk along the Crescent. More vegetation and view becomes avaliable and make people curious about what is in the front.

Rflection of Assigned Reading “Patterns of events/spaces”

W2-A-1 Understanding Task 1 Brief

"In order to define this quality in buildings and in towns, we must begin by understanding that every place is given its character by certain patterns of events that keep on happening there."

Task 1 Pattern of Events + Actors "These patterns of events which create the character of a place are not necessarily human events... Any combination of events, which has a bearing on our lives - an actual physical effect on us - affects our lives."

"Now that I want more of them, But when I see how very few of them there are, I begin to understand what huge effect these few patterns have on my life, on my capacity to live. If they are bad for me, I cant."

"A standard patterns of events vary very much from person to person, and from culture to culture... And indeed, the world does have a structure, just because these patterns of events which repeat themselves are always anchored in the space."

"It simply means that a pattern of events cannot be separated from the space where it occurs." Events give a space character! "And the mere list of elements which are typical in a given town tells us the way of life of people there."

Every little detail and even events that are conducted without human could influence our feeling.

Good pattern of space creates good living qualities. At the same time, we need to offer alternatives and choices because people are different. Pattern of space with certain events informs cultural value and keep culture alive and passing on in a society. Space and event are not divisible,, They work for each other supplementally.

The article gives examples of how certain layout of space informs different meaning, like "Picasso's studio", "A party around a kitchen table" and "Christmas tree". The pattern of space make people think and do in a certain way, which gives character to that space according to people's memory.

The article explains how "including water in a building" in two differently architectural way, one is "a concrete reflecting pool outside your room" No interaction. And the other "is a stream outside your room, with a small rowing boat on it" Yes interaction. "where you can go, to row, lie on the water, struggle against the stream, tip over..."

Christopher Alexander,1979,The Timeless Way of Building, Oxford University Press, New York, pp.55-P100

"The student will be interrogating critical society needs and cureent demands. This part of the studio will focus on the community engagement, based in community commutation and its issues and realities. These studies will help to inform the definition of program for the coming architectural response in which transitory housing demands are mixed with community demands unveiling the social innovation." Cristina Aranzubia & Victor O.Alcamí. 2015, 'DELIRIOUS NO MORE-THE BAYS PRECINCT', UTS Online Subject 11551, subjet outline, UTS, Sydney, viewed 31 March 2015 <https://online.uts.edu.au/webapps/blackboard/content/listCotent>.

After visiting these places for the first impression for task1, in task2 we will conduct a more detailed investigation into the area, mostly focuses on social response from different point of view, neighbourhood, council, community, urban organisations etc. By doing this, we are expected to find out how different people see the area, what do people want for this area, what is lacking so that we need to add, what is good so that we want to keep doing more…

From the investigation and data collection of the exercise, it can be concluded that the historical and cultural characteristic of the place not yet well promoted. However, it is slightly shattered by the rapid residential development which leads to a dramatic change in its demographic profile. It is very important to have a clear future image for Pyrmont’s future development.

It should be encouraged to promote the rich historical and cultural characteristic of the local area. On-site heritage structure should be better maintained and protected. Brief introductory information can be provided to provide more knowledge and understanding for people. Signage is needed especially under rapid development for Pyrmont. It is a critical condition which would maximise convenience and occupancy of services and functions. Furthermore, it can construct a better experiences for users.

Summary of Task 1 Findings

Through the study of Task1, we, as a class and as a group of eight, have gathered a range of information about the Bays Precinct and the Pyrmont area. This knowledge bank will become incredibly important when we start our urban design. What I have found about all three areas (the limits and threshold diagram) was that they all have a same design problem to solve. That is, the connectivity to the water, and hence the connectivity between all three of them. This should be a core aspect which needs to be kept in mind. Also, what I have found important for thinking about urban design is that, all the aspects should be dealt at the same time by finding their inter-relationships. For example, In terms of typography, it is especially interesting to look at Pyrmont and Balmain, they both contains steep cliffs neat water that shows great potential to design it in relation to views. Another example would be designing vegetation for open space in relation with a lots of other aspects, such as function, people flux, noise, culture etc. As our study zooms in to Pyrmont area, as what was showed before, combining the old and new is a critical point to work on. This was also the wish of some local residents through our study of social responses. Also, when I say combining old and new, it is very important to gather information from all different voices, voices of local residents that have lived there for many years and also residents or tourists who are new to the area.

W3-A-1

Understanding Task 2 Brief

W3-A-1 Visiting Pyrmont a second time, we have planned our journey to take a different route this time.

“Research. Pattern of spaces. The different population groups which will be analyzed and responded through the typology of the open space to give response to a social integration.” Cristina Aranzubia & Victor O.Alcamí. 2015, ‘DELIRIOUS NO MORE-THE BAYS PRECINCT’, UTS Online Subject 11551, subjet outline, UTS, Sydney, viewed 31 March 2015 <https://online.uts.edu.au/webapps/blackboard/content/listCotent>.

As was inspired by the readings of “Pattern of space” and “Pattern of event”, it makes me greatly interested in figuring out the idea that everyone’s life is consisted of different routine of events. Every single event works like a small piece of puzzle, and creating a much more complex and large one.

We found also lots of forgotten places that have great potential to become better than what they are now. This time, I feel I have seen the traditional side of Pyrmont, a part we all like and we all want to preserve.

Walking along the pedestrian bridge from Wynard to Pyrmont. I was able to enjoy the convinient pedestrian friendly walkpath with nice view along it. This is the entrance of the photo tour.

View from Giba Park. Standing on the top of the steep typography, the view is very open. The park is very quiet as it has very narrow entrance and it is not very obvious. 4

2

View from Pyrmont Bay Parl. After talking to some local residents, they told us that this park have monthly market event and the Lunar Market even which gain high reputation in its success.

There are a lot of different categories to define a space, democratic space, event space, institutional space, co-habited space, space for smart technology, space for opportunities… Vies versa, a space can have multiple identity. Therefore our group decides to approach this assessment in a slightly different way. After everyone takes one category of space and then go on find examples of them in the area. We have a matching-game and find out the overlaps of spaces, which enhance that this particular space have more than one identity.

3

1

We decided to go through the area rather than go around it as we did last time. By doing this, we found that the centre of Pyrmont really stands out for its historical and cultural value. However the circulation to these area is not always pedestrian friendly.

Reflection of Site Visit - Pyrmont

A major institutional space where both attractives tourists and residents. This is the Great War memorial which gives Pyrmont historical value. 6

3

We call this place "a secrete jungle". It is the walking path connecting apartments to lower ground through steep typography. The view is very nice but there is nowhere to stop and enjoy.

2 6

5 4 1

5

Therefore, we specify a space first, then we diagram each one to their different identity.

Previous route New route

This is one of the small parks among apartment buildings. These parks have potential to be equipt better and increase social interaction between residents.

2015 Lunar Market in Pyrmont Bay Park

Community Protest in Union Square

Scale of event: Event frequency: Participant amount: Participant type: All citizens

Scale of event: Event frequency: Participant amount: Participant type: Community members

Detailed Research for Event Spaces

"We visited the inaugural Lunar Markets; a sort of a Chinese New Year offshoot of the ridiculously popular Night Noodle Markets here in Sydney. This is a smaller more intimate site with 20 stalls which is really kind of plenty – most visits to the Night Noodle Markets – we sort of hit 3-4 stalls so there’s plenty of reason to return. Here, you’ll also get waterside seating which is nice. We check in with Fairfax/Goodfood as guests."

The red laten canopyis a symbolic element for Chinese New Year celebration. It not only reminds Chinese people of their hometown, but also provide oppotunities for people from other cultural background to experience the traditional Chinese way of dinning. This is a highlighting point of this event. It have very high cultural and atomespheric value.

Food stalls are ordered closely along the edge of the park. China is famous for its diverse range of food from all over the country. It is really a rare opportunity to have lots of them at one place, in a row. People can get what they want very easily.

UTS Library 2009, It's the UTS Library with EasterSydney, video recording, YouTube, viewed 21 September 2009, <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6bj-8Z6fM4o>. "The Planning Minister, Craig Knowles, has agreed to meet opponents of a plan to redevelop the former water police site at Pyrmont Point, a protest rally was told. Under a Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority plan, the 1.3 hectare site would house 100 residential units and offices. Around 300 protesters marched from Union Square on Harris Street to Pyrmont Point calling on the State Government to abandon the plans and turn the site into public open space. Sydney Lord Mayor Lucy Turnbull offered her support and said City of Sydney council would carry out a traffic, parking and open space study of the peninsula in the light of the plans. Mayoral candidates Chris Harris, Peter Collins and Dixie Coulton were also at the rally. Rally organiser Marcelle Hoff, of the Friends of Pyrmont Point, said Port Jackson MP Sandra Nori had agreed to arrange the meeting with Mr Knowles. She also said the NSW Greens were drafting legislation "similar to the Callan Park legislation" to protect the site."

This event is a large scale event where the audience is people of whole Sydney. Therefore it is very important to make this event well-organized so that everyone can enjoy it better.

This event has a much smaller scale compare to the new year firework. Although it is also a city event.

This is a local event which is embeded with more local identity and cultrual value. The community uses the exsiting structure on the site (the staircases) and use it as a stage. Smartly reveal the powerfulness of the speakers.

It would be good to introduce some more interaction with different sections. Also, as there is limited private parking area on site, public transport should be maximise to satisfy social demand and at the same time, still create a safe and enjoyable trip experience. Through group discussion, it is interesting to find out that many places in Pyrmont has got multiple characteristics. For example, while being an excellent event space, Pirrama Park is also defined as cohabitated space and space of social integration. What is even more interesting is that, without the huge amount of people for event, its large vacant land pulls apart the distance between people. When my other fellow member looking at social integrated space, he has analyzed this situation in relation with intimacy zone.. in this case, the most popular spots for good fire look-out point become the most intimated zones where not many people would go, and people are tend to go there by themselves with no other people around‌ For the Union Square, it turns into an institutional space on a day-to-day basis. The structure in this case, means something slightly different. The war memorial sculpture becomes a symbol to remind people about the past, the stairs now become seating areas,

We had a discussion session when everyone maps out all their findings for both tasks onto one single big map. In doing so, we are able to absorb all the information from the group at once. We can also gather all useful information for the next stage of our studio, masterplan.

W5-B-2

Reflection of Self-assigned readings about designing Liveable Space

How to build liveable space? 1. Gehl, J. 2001, “Life between Buildings: Using Public Space”, trans. Jo Koch, 5th ed. The Danish Architectural Press, ACopenhagen, pp. 10-53 In this book, Jan Gehl introduces different spatial patterns and examines the physical conditions that might influence them. He seeks quantitative data of social contact and public interaction through a documentation to evaluate the performance of urban form. His research highlights the significance of outdoor activities in constructing liveable environment. This book is useful to my research topic as it analyses the systematic approach and theoretical context of Jan Gehl’s urban design strategy. The main limitation of this book is that it does not present Gehl’s solution and decision as an outcome of these analysis, thus further research about his practices is needed to visualise his contribution in constructing liveable city. This book helps me to understand the theoretical context about my research.

2. Gumpert, G. & Drucker S J. 1994, “Public space and urban life: Challenges in the communication landscape”, Journal of Communication, vol. 44, no. 4, pp. 169-177. Gary Gumpert and Susan J. Drucker reveal the impact of electronic communication devices on reducing physical contact among people and introduce the importance of outdoor public space being a medium of communication. The authors display a range of ideas from different disciplines and scholars which reveals the social desire of physical contact and direct interaction in public sphere. This article focuses on promoting democratic public space to create more diverse modes of communication rather than electronic and technological communication. This article is useful to my research as it stresses the significance of planning public space in improving quality of urban life. The limitation of this article is that it is derived from a communication disciplinary point of view, thus the authors encourage further research and debate to form an active engagement between communication and urban planning. This article is a useful supplementary information as it reveals the challenge of urban planning due to the inseparable impact of public space on communication.

3. Matos Wunderlich. F. 2008, “Walking and rhythmicity: Sensing urban space”, Journal of Urban Design, vol. 3, no. 1, pp. 125-139 Filipa Matos Wunderlich establishes walking as a spatial and temporal practice of experiencing urban space and describes walkability as a crucial aspect which requires close consideration when conducting liveable urban space planning. The author cites a series of literature and conducts fieldwork illustration to explore the relationship between walking and sensing urban space. She focuses on distinguishing three modes of walking and defining them as the inherent temporal practice that characterise different urban space. The article is useful to my research question because it identifies walkability as a criteria for creating a liveable city. The main limitation of this article is that it merely analyses walking in urban environments as an aspect to be designed for in a superficial manner, the author then concludes that in depth analysis is needed to explore walkability as a significant design method. The research scope of this article only touches upon a part of Jan Gel’s broad perspective, however it is very helpful to understand the inner connection between walkability and urban design.

4. McNeil, D. 2011, “Fine grain, global city: Jan Gehl, public space and commercial culture in central Sydney”, Journal of urban design, vol. 16, no. 2, pp. 161-178. Donald McNeill reveals the contestable nature of Jan Gehl’s urban design strategies of their implementation in central Sydney. This article examines the “Sustainable Sydney 2030” policy initiatives and Jan Gehl’s participation in developing these strategies. The research focuses on exploring the political context of the Sydney CBD project. This article is useful because it reveals potential problematic nature of such planning strategy from observations of examples from other cities. The limitation of the article is its shattered consideration on social and cultural value of both the policy and Gehl’s strategy, thus more comprehensive research should be conducted for final evaluation as the role of urban planning is to achieve a balance among all different aspects of demands. This article is highly related but at the same time, provides some negative notions against my viewpoint. However, it guides me to think about my topic from diverse standpoints and more objectively.

5. Montgomery, J. 1997, “Cafe culture and the city: the role of pavement cafes in urban public social life”, Journal of urban design, vol. 2, no. 1, pp. 83-102. John Montgomery highlights the potential contribution of cafe culture being one of few remaining sociability formats, to constitute urban public social life under technological background. Research and references is made in Holland, Denmark, London and Manchester to explore how cafe culture stimulates public social life. This article research focuses on assessing the relationship between cafes, street life and urban public social life. This article is useful because human scale is the main consideration while activating urban space through cafe culture which highly relates to Jan Gehl’s design strategy. The main limitation of this article is that the discussion is mainly based on personal knowledge and historical observations, the author concludes that more systematic and detailed research should be carried out to examine the benefits that cafe culture can bring to current 2urban life. Although the references of this article does not directly support my topic as they are restricted in Europe, this article shows relevance to my research topic in investigating the role of cafe as an interaction space in designing social life.

6. The City of Sydney, 2008, Sustainable Sydney 2030 The Vision, City of Sydney Council, Sydney, viewed 10 March 2015 < http://www.sydney2030.com.au/> In this publication, the City of Sydney Council highlights a vision towards the future development of a “green, global, connect” Sydney CBD by constructing a series of targets and proposing several strategies. This publication is useful to my research topic as it directly reflects the council’s desirable vision of Sydney’s development, and sets a guideline for Jan Gehl’s proposal to work towards. The main limitation of this publication is that it is excessively conceptual and broad, therefore solid proposals are needed to achieve such expectations. This publication provides the predominant background of discussion for my research question.

7. Gehl Architects, 2007, Sydney – Public Space Public Life 2007, ISSUU, Denmark, viewed 05 March 2015 < http://issuu.com/gehlarchitects/docs/issuu_516_sydney_pspl2007> In this publication, Gehl Architects display not only their documentation of study of Sydney, but also their proposals and recommendations for future developments of the city. This publication supplements an integral part of Sustainable Sydney 2030 strategies by providing potential proposals in accomplishing the vision of a better city. This publication is useful to my research topic as it directly shows the methodology and thinking strategy of Jan Gehl. The main limitation of this publication is that it only provides a subjective point of view of Gehl Architects, more diverse aspects and perspectives should be included to present a more reliable and applicable planning decision. This publication is highly related to my research topic and it helps me to understand and analysis Jan Gehl’s specific approach in conducting a planning strategy for Sustainable Sydney 2030 vision.

This studio was undertaken through this process of RESEARCH – DESIGN cycle. (Figure 1.) The first half of the studio helps us to investigate the site condition in various different aspects, and then to examine our findings with constant reflection and refinement. These information would then construct the knowledge foundation which would then inform our final master plan design. In

Glebe Island

For

example, how do we create satisfying

to attract developers’ and investors’ interest,

if all residential development does not get direct water view?

As

this is only the first

time for us to design at an urban scale, the design problems and design aspects are no longer constrained as limited as design one good building.

I

think this feedback is very

constructive as it opens up another field of research which is lacking to make the design proposal practical.

Point 2. An Continuing

adequate mixture of different usage to

from point

1, I

“make

it work”

think the major reason for the contestable nature of our

proposal was because we have

“simplified”

the designing process too much and we have

skipped to much important aspects and rush to an urban plan that is dubious.

For

example,

there is only low rise residential buildings which would not accommodate enough local residents to make an adequate amount of usage of the facilities after working hours.

This

would cause a lot of potential problems that we have not thought through while we design.

Point 3. Look

at the master plan at a larger scale.

Another important critic was asking us to blow up the scale of our study before designing. To consider what is the role of the Bays Precinct now and how better it can be in the future? One comment was that there are ridiculously far too much commercial development than what the place is needing. It seems like we are turning Pyrmont into a self-sustained enclosure, like Wentworth Point. However, regarding its proximity to Sydney CBD and its great potential, the Bays Precinct should be a lot more than that. It leaves me pondering “Is this a proposal that everyone likes or Is this a proposal only we like?” Pyrmont is a part of the city of Sydney, how we design it would bring enormous influence at a regional or even national scale. All our investigations from Task 1 and Task 2 are restricted to

Designing Masterplan - Reflections

the Bays Precinct, however it should not constrain our thoughts in that limited zone. What I have learnt about urban designing from this feedback is that, one planning decision should contain various different scale, for instance, in a local scale, how does this planning strategy change this place for improving the living quality for its residents? Or maybe it is becoming worse at some points, why was that? Is that a trade off? In a regional scale, how does this planning strategy influence or impact the area around it? Will it fit well? In a national scale, how does the overall change rebuild the region’s character? And so on. These questions may be quite hard to answer as the scale is getting larger, more and more researches will become helpful to let us take back in control. There must be answers to all these question, otherwise our design does not change anything.

Point 4. Refer In

back to previous study is essential, with more research.

the jury session, we have spent lot of time presenting the first two tasks, which is site

analysis from different aspects.

Everyone became so excited after seeing these large amount At the same time, they kept reminding us that they would love to see how all these information can be integrated into the Task 3 (the master plan). Although our design solution has some close connection to our Task 1 and 2, I was a bit nervous and I kept searching in my mind “Is there any more?” “Is there any very good ones that stands out?” I think that emotional reaction I was experiencing was due to the fact that there should be more. In another word, there should be some more obvious ones. When I look back to our design, we have adapted social responses to satisfy their needs, we have identify what is available on the site and made use of it (Typography + View). However, I found all these modifications are so broad, and bored. It is what everyone can think of instantly after maybe the first one or two visit to Pyrmont. of information that we have gathered.

Green Space

Green spaces are proposed at major circulation intersection (eg. the Glebe Island Bridge and the opportunity spine) to provide shades and create natrual atomsphere. Vegetated courtyard area of buildings uses trees as privacy buffer.

Circulation & USI site

There are three main circualtion paths. They are the waterfront path with opportunity spine, the Glebe Island Main street that Split the whole site into two halves and the extension of experiencial journey which cut across the other two main paths and leads people to the White Bay power station. The urban social incubator is located at the tip of Glebe Island. Together with the Sydney Fish Market in Pyrmont, the two site are defined as the spaces for opportunity. The urban social incubator has an enormous advantage as it intersects with all three main circulation paths.

Residential

Almost eighty percent of buildings in the master plan are residential. They are mainly medium rises buildings to avoid overshadowing and wind tunnel problems.

Commercial

Commerical buildings are located along the opportunity spine and the Glebe Island main street for convinient accessibility. Furthermore, to encourage a mixture of urban social actors for a more lively and flavourise community characteristic.

Retail

Facility

Retail sections are mainly distributed along the opportunity spine and the Glebe Island main street. They are all placed on the ground floor to ensure active street frontage for maximum social inteactions by providing more optional activities to the users. Facilities includes gym, cinema, post office etc to make a more convinient living enviroment for residents and worksers on the Glebe Island. They are placed close to residential and commercial buildings. Easy access from main circulation paths are also ensured.

there is the urban social incubator

(a

needs to be defined (specifically of a building and its context).

DESIGN PRECEDENT RESEARCH

REFLECTION OF RESEARCH

OMA's Taipei Performing Arts Centre

Spatial Division & Connection Spatial Core A core at the centre of a building provides potential to easier circulating routes and visibility to each level. Easier to create merging space and maximises spatial efficiency.

Proposed mode

Traditional mode Traditionally, events are held in one single level. There is little interaction at a building space.

A relatively larger space can be provided for small to medium scale events by connecting space horizontally. The rest of the building would not get too much effect.

Proposed mode "Associate-in-charge Adam Frampton notes: ‘The premise of the design is to combine three theatres into more than the sum of their parts. Similarly, the collaboration between the Taipei City Government, international and local architects, engineers, and specialists has yielded a collective result exceeding individual potential.’" Dezeen 2012, Taipei Performing Arts Centre by OMA, Milan, viewed 06 May 2015 <http://www.dezeen.com/2012/02/16/taipei-performing-arts-centre-by-oma-2/>

Space is flexible to arrange to satisfy the demand according to different scale of events. In doing so, the event space can bring effect to the whole building.

OMA's proposal for the Bocconi University

Relationship Between Spaces

+ Spaces that are easy to get combined. + Circulation to connect the whole building. + Flexible spatial arrange -ment to enable differ -ent scale event to happen.

DOMUS 2013, OMA for Bocconi, Milan, viewed 06 May 2015 <http://www.domusweb.it/en/news/2013/01/16/oma-for-bocconi.html>

Fitting Programs & Circualtion This is similar to the urban strategy where there is a main linear circulation and a circulation path along the periphery. What is different and more flexible now is that the experiencial journey is determined by the building users.

URBANISM RESEARCH Physical Enviroment & Social Activity

Jan Gehl 2001, Life Between Buildings, p.13

He strongly argues that thoughtful design in physical environment would have a direct and significant effect on social activities. Constructing a great city needs much more than just great architecture, building design has become a mean to an end, but not an end in itself. Therefore, Gehl emphasizes that life between buildings has now became an important aspect of architectural practice which requires more careful attentions.

The two extensions of the circualtion intersects at the edge of the site boundary. Which is not ideal becuase it leads circulation flow to the marginal area of the site.

Relocate Circulation Intersection

Possible Outcome 1

Possible Outcome 2

Keep the extension line from the main street of Glebe Island, rotate the waterfront circualtion line in order to relocate the intersection to the middle of the site.

Link the two circulation sipne and make a continuious circulation path.

1. Artificial Typography

Locating programs

Artificial Typography is added to make the turning circulation path, as well as creating soil for planting.

To ensure easy access and to make the circulation more interesting, programs are placed seperately rather than stacked. Dominant programs in each zone is placed towards the centre which is less accessible, to encourage more circulation in each zone.

Supporting programs

Amenity stair is built on top of the hill, bridges are built from the stairs, stretching out and direct people towards nice view.

The ends of bridges are shaped to enhance the characteristics of each zone. Supporting landscape design is added.
