For decades, advertising has served a critical purpose in the business world by enabling businesses to effectively compete with one another for the attention of buyers. Whether the goods and services your company provides are a necessity, a luxury or just a bit of whimsy, you can’t rely on a one-time announcement or word-of-mouth chatter to keep a steady stream of customers. Today businesses are faced with stretching their marketing dollars to produce the highest possible return on investment. It is no longer a choice of whether or not to invest in advertising, but how to do so in an industry that is rapidly changing.

The Price Group has more than 40 years of experience in marketing, advertising and public relations and has implemented a 7-step marketing process to help guide your businesses or organization from the most basic marketing concepts to the complex. Participants will learn valuable information about: ● Brand development and research ● Target audience and messaging ● Broadcast and print media ● Emerging media (digital and social media) ● Public relations and community outreach ● Measurement If you want your business to thrive in the current economy and gain a marketing edge against your competition, this is the presentation for you. Chamber members may register for the discounted price of $65/person, groups of 5 or more for $55/person or 10 or more for $45/person. Nonmembers may register for $75/person.

Sondra's Song helps Foster Children Provided By: Sandi Turner Sondra’s Song is an organization which began a year ago. Its focus is to help youth leaving the foster care system. Many of these youth are unprepared for independent living and face significant challenges and barriers as they transition out of state care when they turn 18. We currently have a partnership with The Lubbock Transition Center. Foster youth, as a group, struggle far more than other young adults. They are six times more likely to become teenage parents and more than twice as likely to drop out of high school. While 70% of these young adults say they want to attend college, only 3% receive a college degree. Twenty-five percent of youth aging out of foster care will experience homelessness before they are 21 years of age. Fewer than half of former foster youth are employed 4 years after leaving foster care, and only 38% have maintained employment for at least one year. In Texas there are 1500 youth “aging out” of the foster care system every year, struggling with homelessness, unemployment, poverty and lack of support. In Lubbock County, existing programs target youth from Lubbock, Idalou, Levelland, Lamesa, Littefield, Brownfield, Plainview, Slaton, Wilson, among others. There are also those that come into the placement from another state. Transitional living and housing programs can provide youth with more structure and support. There are currently not enough shelter programs to meet the existing need and, as a result, youth are regularly turned away without a place to sleep. As we continue to look for our field of dreams, we continue to look for partnership with our ambitious project of building an affordable housing facility for our youth. We want to facilitate success through safe, stable and affordable housing to a livable wage income whether it’s through employment or

higher education. We want to build strong independent futures. We are eager to find business professionals to mentor our youth. May is National Foster Awareness Month. Show your support by ordering your t-shirt today. T-shirts are available online at www.sondrassong.org. Always singing their song.....

Toby Stephens, Sign Biz® Member Earns DSCE Elite Sign & Design Makes the Move to Dynamic Signage Provided by: Paul Strauch, VP Worldwide Product Development, Sign Biz, Inc. On this quiet Saturday afternoon in Lubbock, Texas, Toby Stephens, owner of Elite Sign & Design, clicked “submit” and became a member of a rare breed: The digital print sign professional who crossed over to the bright side and embraced dynamic digital signage as a part of his future. He became a dynamic sign expert. The Digital Signage Experts Group (DSEG), an impartial and agnostic organization working in coordination and cooperation with the manufacturers, distributors, content creators and resellers in the digital signage industry, created the course for DSCE (Digital Signage Certified Expert), a full immersion into the digital signage market for those wanting an impartial and agnostic approach to understanding the complexities of the industry. DSCE course covers the scale and scope of the industry and examines the disparate parts of complex digital signage solutions culminating in the 7 Key Elements of Digital Signage. At the conclusion of the course, there

is a certification test administered online. Attendees are awarded the DSCE designation upon passing the test. “It becomes feasible to learn up-to-the minute critical technology factors, because this course can be completed over a weekend,” explains Young. “It is also affordable, at only $195, and so if you are researching whether dynamic signage is something that fits your future, this online course gives you the knowledge to make a wise decision in that regard. It is a small investment for a big return.” Stephens, who is a member of the Sign Biz Network, learned of the course just this month. His business was enjoying strong growth, and the timing was right to look at expansion opportunities. He explains, “We are Elite Sign & Design and want to continue to live up to our name. By investing in the future of the sign industry to ensure we provide the latest technology, we are positioned to offer products and services to the explosive digital signage market. The next step in signage is incredibly exciting.”

The cook-off will be held in the S1 parking lot north of the soccer fields at Texas Tech Parkway and Marsha Sharp Freeway, west of the University Medical Center. Check-in and set-up begin at 9 a.m. on Friday morning, with a head cooks’ meeting at 9 a.m. Saturday at the hospitality tent. Judging will follow, with chicken at noon, ribs at 1 p.m. and brisket at 2 p.m. Awards will be announced by 5 p.m. at the hospitality tent. Bradley Price, director of Raider Red Meats, said that hopefully in future years, the event will become a fundraiser for the Department of Animal and Food Sciences’ judging teams. “We were excited about the event’s success last year and hope it will continue to grow,” Price said. “Subsequent events could raise funds for scholarships, research and competitive teams that represent Texas Tech University.” Cooks from across the state are invited to come and compete in three meat divi-

sions – chicken, ribs and brisket. The entry fee is $125 per team and covers all three meat categories. The registration form and additional information is available at www. raiderredmeats.com. If you aren’t a cook, but enjoy eating lip smakin’ BBQ, you can serve as a judge for the event on Saturday, May 5. To volunteer please, contact Shelbi Knisley at shelbi.r.knisley@ttu.edu. The Lubbock Chamber of Commerce would like to thank Raider Red Meats for their contribution to the Hub City BBQ.

Water-Smart Business – Lubbock Christian University Congratulations to Lubbock Christian University for winning the Water-Smart Business Award for the spring 2012 quarter from the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce Water Conservation Council. Wilbur Jones, facility engineer at Lubbock Christian University, said they began making changes to their interior fixtures as a cost saving measure, especially when student enrolment began increasing above their typical margins. “A big part of our transformation is just high efficiency fixtures in our bathrooms,” Jones said. “We have gone from conventional shower heads to a low flow shower heads that save 40 percent of the water typically used.” Jones said they have also begun utilizing high efficiency power flush toilets, which use less water than most water saving toilets. However, the toilets still give them the same type of power they need for the whole campus. “By going with the higher water efficiency fixtures,” Jones said, “we have been able to meet a greater demand for a larger student body without increasing our water supply.” Although they have not seen a lot of savings dollar wise, Jones said they have seen a pay back on all of their fixtures. Students and faculty members across campus have also benefited from the transformation. “People are happier because they have new

fixtures in their bathrooms,” Jones said. “Some of our buildings are over 50 years old and we were replacing 50 year old toilets, many professors were happy about that. “ Lubbock Christian University utilizes every drop of water they can to keep tuition costs down. Jones said another water conservation practice they involve in is water reuse. “Any time we have cast processes that use water, we try to recapture that water and use it for irrigation,” Jones said. “Rather than using the water once, we are trying to use it over and

over again to the best of our ability. “ Some of the ways Lubbock Christian University reuses their water is for their sports and recreation fields, as well as the nearby golf course. If you are conserving water – inside or outside – at your place of business, or know someone who is, the Water Conservation Council would like to know, as you could be a candidate for this quarterly award! American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women® Luncheon Provided By: Ashley Harder American Heart Association In its ongoing effort to elevate public awareness about heart disease, the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women® Luncheon is teaming up with Emmy-nominated actress Elizabeth Banks to share the truth about the No. 1 killer of women. More women die of heart disease than all forms of cancer combined. Unfortunately, heart disease is often silent, hidden and misunderstood. That’s why Go Red For Women is asking the women of Lubbock to participate in the Annual Go Red for Women Health Fair and Luncheon on Thursday, April 19, 2012, to make ending heart disease a reality. Currently some eight million women in the U.S. are living with heart disease, yet only one in six women believes that heart disease is her greatest health threat. In fact, 90 percent of women have one or more risk factors for developing heart disease. On Thursday, April 19, 2012, Lubbock women and men are invited to participate

in the 2012 Lubbock Go Red For Women Luncheon at the Overton Hotel & Conference Center. From 9:30 – 11:30 am, the American Heart Association and Covenant Health System will host a Heart Health Fair with free health screenings from over 20 vendors including BMI, cholesterol, blood sugar and body fat percentage, health information, giveaways and opportunity to Shop Red. The Go Red For Women Luncheon will follow from 11:30am – 1pm with a Survivor Style Show and a presentation led by the Presenting Speaker, Sharyn Ivory. Elizabeth Banks Stars in ‘Just a Little Heart Attack” and New PSA Emmy-nominated actress Elizabeth Banks directs and stars in the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women new public

service announcement and short film, “Just a Little Heart Attack,” inspired by the real-life stories of women who have been affected by heart disease. The entertaining, yet poignant film, which can be viewed on Facebook.com/ GoRed, provides a powerful wake-up call to women across America to understand their risk for heart disease and empower them to put their health first. “While the film is funny, having a heart attack is not something to be laughed at,” said Banks. “However, I’m using humor to help uncover the truth about heart disease, to get people interested in learning more about their hearts – and our movement.” The American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women movement is locally sponsored by Covenant Health System and Suddenlink Communications. Construction of underground conduit

Setting the stage… Downtown Revitalization Begins

The first phase of the Downtown Underground Utility Installation Project has begun. This marks an exciting step in the long-planned renovation and regeneration of the downtown area. The current utility obstructions that litter downtown alleys and pedestrian areas will be moved to an underground duct system, creating a safe and attractive pedestrian-friendly environment. The City Council supports the future revitalization of the downtown area, and has passed a resolution determining that it is “…necessary for all utilities located overhead in the streets and alleys of the downtown area to be relocated into an underground duct system”. “More than 100 years of growth has left downtown a tangled mess of wires that are vulnerable to potential damage from severe weather and accidents and makes even routine exterior building maintenance difficult,” said Mayor Tom Martin. “Placing the utilities underground will not only create a safer environment but also provide a needed catalyst for downtown growth over the next 100 years.” On November 16, 2011, the City

entered into contract with Utility Contractors of America to construct Phase 1 of the downtown area’s duct system at a cost of approximately $2.1 million. The project is funded with a $1.5 million Economic Development Administration grant from the United States Department of Commerce and with bonds paid from revenues already generated by increased property values in the downtown area. Phase 1 of the project will take place in an area bordered by 10th Street to Broadway and from Avenue L to Avenue Q. The City’s Downtown Master Developer, McDougal Companies, has identified those boundaries as the focus area for initial development in the downtown. Texas Tech University is one organization that recently established a new presence downtown when they moved several offices to a building on Main Street. “Texas Tech has a great interest in the growth and redevelopment of Downtown Lubbock,” said Jim Brunjes, Chief Financial Officer of the Texas Tech University System. “An active and energized downtown will make Lubbock a stronger city and provide a benefit in recruiting as we strive toward our goal of 40,000 students. The recent opening of the Texas Tech Downtown Administrative Support Center at 1120 Main Street, supporting over 90 employees demonstrates the commitment of Texas Tech to Downtown Lubbock.”

The downtown area is seeing a resurgence of activity and interest. The Arts District is expanding and gaining momentum and the Depot District is continuing to provide high quality entertainment venues. Several renovations and construction projects have already transformed older structures in the downtown area to impressive, modern facilities. The acceleration of businesses and residents moving to the downtown area is evidenced by the increase in assessed values in the area.

“The revival of a vibrant and healthy downtown is underway,” said Robert Taylor, Board Chair of the Central Business District Tax Increment Financing Reinvestment Zone (TIF). “The Central Business District TIF Board is excited to see the progress that’s already been made and looks forward to new growth in downtown.”
