National Ag Day is a day to recognize and celebrate the abundance provided by agriculture. Every year, producers, agricultural associations, corporations, universities, government agencies and countless others across America join together to recognize the contributions of agriculture. The Chamber’s Salute to Ag Luncheon, presented by City Bank, featured guest speaker Marcus Hill, President and Chairman of Ag Workers Insurance and Chairman of Worth Casualty.

Cinco de Mayo Luncheon

The Lubbock Chamber of Commerce is scheduled to host a Cinco de Mayo Luncheon 11:45 a.m. – 1 p.m on May 5 at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center at 1501 Mac Davis Lane. This year’s key-note speaker is John Esparza, President and CEO of the Texas Motor Transportation Association and Regent of Texas Tech University. Esparza was appointed by Governor Rick Perry to the Texas Tech Board of Regents last February and will serve a six-year term. Esparza received a bachelor’s degree from Tech and is currently a member of the College of Media and Communication National Advisory Board at Tech. “It has been my honor to serve the state in many capacities throughout my career, but to do so for the university that is dear to my heart is truly humbling,” Esparza said after his appointment. With more than 350 in attendance each year, the Cinco de Mayo luncheon celebrates the Hispanic heritage common to many of our members and fellow citizens. As the Hispanic popu-

Imagine Lubbock Together First Quarter Update The Imagine Lubbock Together Steering Committee reports that a great amount of planning has occurred within the committees and task forces since the first of the year. Organizational meetings are conducted on a regular basis for the eight key element areas. The Healthy Living Task Force comprised of Get FiT Lubbock and Healthy Lubbock, had their first large group meeting at the end of February with around 100 people in attendance. The task force divided up into four subcommittees that focus on specific issues, the Environment, Medical, Nutrition and Physical Activity and identifying their relation to making Lubbock a healthier community. ILT Chairwoman Connie Wharton said, “It doesn’t matter what part of the city anybody lives in. There’s really no difference in the fact that everybody cares about health and wellness or needs to.” The many businesses and organizations that were represented came together to share information and begin

by Audrey DeLeon connecting the dots in working towards the overall goal. The next step for each group is to work together to establish an action plan with goals and measures to be accomplished with specific needs identified in each area. Their follow-up meeting is set to occur in the next few weeks. The ILT committee will hold their next public meeting in May. This interactive meeting will allow attendees the opportunity to learn about the progress of whichever of the eight key elements that they are interested in. Key elements will be presented by the committee members working on corresponding goals and next steps. The groups will also allow for questions and answers. More information on the time and location of the meeting will be released soon. Please visit www.imaginelubbocktogether.com for the details!

New Century Leadership: Endless Opportunity Day

by Diana Fabing

Leadership Lubbock: Health & Medical Day

by Diana Fabing

Every child has a dream, and for some the dream is to attend college. New Century Leadership students were introduced to various campuses during Endless Opportunities Day. The morning began with a visit to Lubbock Christian University and a greeting from President Tim Perrin. Following presentations, a guided tour gave students the ideal setting to envision a university future. South Plains College-Levelland greeted students with a bang and, after a brief tour of Tubb Hall, a law enforcement presentation by Kenny Burns was followed by a visit to the shooting range and a viewing of the Lasershot Simulator. The Creative Arts Department opened its door and the Commercial Music halls were filled with the sounds of budding musicians as students wove their way to the theater to gain backstage knowledge.

Serving as CEO of Covenant Health System is like a dream come true for Richard Parks. Describing the mission and the services provided, his passion and love for Covenant was apparent to the Leadership Lubbock class. Thus, Health & Medical Day began on a high note. Class members sharpened their surgical skills on the surgery simulations and excitement was high as they watched a large screen display their skill. David Miller wrapped up an extremely successful forum with his presentation on “Servant Leadership” and his message was one of challenging students to discover their personal mission of leadership in paying it forward. Martha Atwood spoke of the American Diabetes Association’s programs that promote education. Colleen Evans ended the morning presentations with a further explanation of Chamber membership and the value-added

After a presentation by President Dr. Kelvin Sharp and a performance by the SPC Ballroom Dance Team, the class headed to Texas Tech University. Committee member Britta Tye gave a windshield tour and a brief history lesson and then the Rawls College of Business Administration gave a tour of its facilities. Visioning their own version of a university was the basis of Zach Manning’s presentation, providing a hands-on opportunity for students to understand the process. The ROTC department discussed various options of student involvement while staying in school and then the day ended with a tour of the new Talkington/Commons residence halls.

programs offered to help member businesses. A lunch presentation by StarCare provided a glimpse of the respect and dignity people receive when part of the StarCare system. That theme was further reinforced by the American Cancer Society’s tour of Hope Lodge. UMC Health System welcomed students for an intensive tour of its SimLife Center and the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center concluded the day with a presentation of the Gross Anatomy Lab. Thank you to our presenting sponsors, FirstCare Health Plans and Betenbough Homes; platinum sponsors United Supermarkets, Lubbock Economic Development Alliance, Lubbock National Bank, and Parkhill, Smith & Cooper. Our Health & Medical Days sponsors were Covenant Health, Community Health Center of Lubbock, UMC Health System, and StarCare Specialty Health System.

Travel with the Chamber to Costa Rica! Experience one of today’s most popular vacation spots, Costa Rica. Despite its size, Costa Rica has some of the most beautiful rainforests in the world in addition to volcanoes, pristine forests, tropical beaches and exotic wildlife. The country is well protected by an extensive system of national parks that cover over 25 percent of the country. Visit the capital city of San Jose where many major companies and developments have settled but still has a surprisingly “small town” feel. Travel north to La Fortuna, Arenal to see breathtaking views of the Arenal Volcano and enjoy the Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge which is considered to

be one of the richest in biological diversity in Costa Rica with a great variety of migratory birds, plus iguanas, sloths, and turtles, as well as three different species of monkeys. The last part of the trip will be spent on the Pacific Coast in Guanacaste at an all inclusive hotel where you can enjoy the beach, relax in a jungle boat cruising slowly through the Palo Verde wetlands or take a day trip excursion into the country of Nicaragua which is just north of Costa Rica. April Business of the Month: Bayer CropScience

The Chamber congratulates Bayer CropScience on being named the April Business of the Month. Bayer CropScience has been a Chamber member since 2004. As the city of Lubbock has grown, Bayer CropScience is proud to note that the commitment to its agricultural foundation has not wavered. “As cities grow it’s harder to keep people connected to agriculture and we’re glad to say the Lubbock Chamber recognizes how important agriculture is to our community and its members. At Bayer CropScience, we also work continuously to improve agriculture, our communities and the well-being of cotton growers – with the goal to help them feed and clothe the world,” said Jeff Brehmer, cotton product manager. Bayer enjoys its work with Chamber, and is involved in many community activities with the Chamber that keep the company tied to Lubbock, such as the Bayer Museum of Agriculture, where community members and visitors from around the world can learn more about agriculture and its impact on everyday life. “Our sponsorship of the Bayer Museum of Agriculture and support of the annual Texas Tech Celebrate Cotton football

game help demonstrate our belief that agriculture is important to communities, locally and globally,” Brehmer added. “Bayer CropScience is proud to be an active member of the Chamber and to sponsor many important local events that the Chamber spearheads. We look forward to many more years of growth.” Some of the events and sponsorships Bayer is a part of include the Chamber’s Harvest Luncheon, Leadership Lubbock and Agribusiness Day, Golf Classic Tournament, Harvest Breakfast, Ag in the Bag, and Breakfast with Texas Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples. Bayer was also a sponsor of the recent Salute to Agriculture Luncheon for National Ag Day.

The Chamber is proud to congratulate Bayer CropScience on its April Business of the Month achievement. Bayer, along with all of the other businesses of the month for 2014, will be considered for the Chamber’s Business of the Year award, in December 2014.
