Citibus!

The Federal Transit Administration conducts Triennial Reviews of all recipients of Federal Grants.

Every transit system has a triennial review every three years. The review determines whether a grantee is administering its FTA funded programs in accordance with Federal regulations, and assesses grantee management practices and program implementation to ensure that programs are administered in accordance with FTA requirements and are meeting program objectives. The Triennial Review covers 18 areas of program management. The Federal Transit Administration Triennial Review of Citibus was completed in November. Citibus had no findings to be corrected. That is a significant accomplishment. Lubbock is only the second transit system in FTA Region 6 to receive no findings in the past two years. FTA Region 6 consists of Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, and New Mexico. We congratulate Citibus staff on this accomplishment.

Chamber to Host Candidate Forum for Texas House District 83 Candidates

The Lubbock Chamber of Commerce will host a candidate forum on Wednesday evening, Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. for candidates in the Texas House District 83 GOP Primary.

Incumbent Charles Perry and challenger Steve Massengale will both appear in the hour-long event to be broadcast on Ramar’s FOX34 NewsNOW outlet. High definition viewers in metro Lubbock can receive the signal on 32.1. Cable subscribers can view the event on Suddenlink cable 9/109(HD) or NTS cable 5/705(HD).

“Our award-winning candidate forums have come to be something Lubbock voters and Chamber members count on as we address questions to candidates on issues that affect our economy and business climate,” said Alona Beesinger, Lubbock Chamber of Commerce Chairwoman.

Natural Grocers Wins Water-Smart Business Award

The Lubbock Chamber of Commerce extends its most sincere congratulations to Natural Grocers by Vitamin Cottage for winning the Chamber’s Winter Quarter Water-Smart Business Award. Lubbock’s Natural Grocers store opened March 5, 2013.

The store was built with water conservation in mind.

Each quarter, the Chamber recognizes members who have implemented water-saving measures. The criteria to win can be anything from landscaping to rainfall capture systems to installing low-flow toilets and active promotion of water conservation. Natural Grocers has been recognized, most recently, because of their water conservation techniques. Adam Nolan, Lubbock store manager, said Natural Grocers has implemented several water conservation landscape and plumbing, including automatic sinks that prevent a sink from ever being left on as they are activated by motion, as well as a sprinkler system that is designed to not turn on when it has rained.

Nolan said Natural Grocers’ home office and management team have gone through many learning experiences in order to be so successful from a water conservation aspect. So successful, in fact, that Natural Grocers is about to open its 76th store.

Sustainable practices, water conservation and environmentally friendly techniques are a part of Natural Grocers’ founding

principles. Natural Grocers has made it their duty and obligation to practice what they preach. Nolan said that Natural Grocers strives to “provide affordable, high quality foods.”

Nolan said the water-conservation methods and techniques Natural Grocers uses, along with a number of other environmentally friendly features, has been a great way for Natural Grocers to be able to give back to the local ecosystem.

“We’re excited to win [the Water-Smart Business Award],” said Nolan, “Natural Grocers is new to Lubbock and there are new faces and people coming in all the time.”

Natural Grocers has been a Chamber member since they opened last year. Nolan said he has has enjoyed getting to see Natural Grocers become a contributing member of the community, here in Lubbock.

2014 Off to a Great Start with Chairwoman Alona Beesinger Two thousand and fourteen is already off to a great start with Alona Beesinger as this year’s Chairwoman! Beesinger considers it an honor to serve the Chamber as Chairwoman in 2014.

“It is something I have always wanted to do,” Beesinger said.

“Our chamber is a two-time, 5-star accredited chamber which is a rare event in the industry.” Beesinger acknowledges, and appreciates, our elite Chamber. “We have an award-winning health insurance program that we are very proud of with FirstCare,” said Beesinger. “We have such a wonderful community because they care and want to be involved and I am very proud to lead this organization.”

Beesinger follows Carlos Morales of Caprock Home Health Services, Inc. as the 95th Chairperson of the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce.

“The Chamber Board of Directors and staff look forward to Alona’s leadership this year. She has been extremely involved in policy development, strategic planning and mentoring over the last several years. We’re fortunate for the time and support she has made available to further the Chamber in our community,” said Eddie McBride, President and CEO of the Chamber.

Beesinger is the Suddenlink Marketing Manager for the Lubbock System. She brings many years of business experience in the Lubbock community into her daily business transactions.

Beesinger is the contact for all Community and Public Relations.

“With many years of management experience, I think I can bring that professionalism to our meetings continuing to make them the great meetings they are,” stated Beesinger. “I believe anytime you are serving an organization as valuable as our Chamber is to our community, you will always expand your sphere of interest and knowledge.”

A long-time member of the Chamber, Beesinger has been involved with the Chamber for over 25 years, and began serving on the Chamber Board of Directors in 2009. She is also a 1996-97 Leadership Lubbock graduate.

“I have worked closely with many of the staff in various roles and getting to know them and the skill sets they bring to our Chamber will always motivate me to do more and be a bigger

part of this organization,” Beesinger stated. “Working with the Leadership Lubbock Steering Committees for two years, chairing TRC, as well as serving on the Board and then the Executive Committee gave me a really different glimpse of the inner workings and challenges as well as the successes we have. I want to do whatever I can to continue this great legacy of the Chamber.”

Along with the Chamber, Beesinger is involved with many other groups in Lubbock including The Volunteer Center, Children’s Advocacy Center, American Diabetes, Lubbock Boys and Girls Club, Ballet Lubbock and Lubbock Symphony to name just a few. Beesinger likes to approach each activity she is involved in with the idea of making life easier for someone. She has been with Suddenlink for almost 12 years and loves what she can bring to her position.

Beesinger will continue to focus on the Chamber’s goals and help move the Chamber forward from success to significance. “I believe that being as involved as possible with all of groups that we serve is vital to my understanding of our Chamber,” Beesinger said, “We are truly on the brink of a new area with our ILT progress and I think that those areas will significantly grow Lubbock to our potential.”

Beesinger is very fortunate to live in Lubbock and is excited to do her part in making Lubbock the very best it can be. “I am here to serve you,” Beesinger said to the Chamber, and its member businesses. “Come join with me and together we can make it happen.”

The Lubbock Association of Realtors Held Its Annual Installation and Awards

The Lubbock Association of REALTORS® held its annual Installation and Awards banquet on Jan. 10, 2014 at the McKenzieMerket Alumni Center where Nancy Rawls of RE/MAX Lubbock was installed as the 2014 President. The banquet also serves as the time to present the association’s awards.

Two Distinguished Service Awards were given at the banquet. The Distinguished Service Award is given to those members who have shown dedication and outstanding service and contributions to the Association and the real estate industry throughout their real estate career.

Recipients of the award this year were Linda Gaither and Joe L. Murfee, III.

Linda Gaither has been a REALTOR member since 1992 and has served in every leadership position available in the associa-

tion. She served as both President of the LAR and Chairman of the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce in 2005. Gaither was acknowledged for her volunteerism within the association and the Lubbock Community. Her other awards include REALTOR® of the Year in 2005.

Joe L. Murfee, III was awarded the REALTOR® Emeritus designation in 2012 for 40 years of membership in the National Association of REALTORS®. As with the other award recipients, Murfee has served in all leadership capacities of the LAR, and was President in 1986 and 2008. Murfee is involved in numerous civic organizations, including Rotary and the Lions Club. Murfee was recognized as REALTOR® of the Year in 1987 and received the Pinnacle Award in 2003.

Chamber University: Customer Service

The Chamber University: Customer Service Seminar on Jan. 29th featured Phil Pirkle, Executive Vice President of Talent Management for United Supermarkets with Brandon Mulkey, Owner/Operator of Chick-fil-A and Rob Bailey, Director of Employee Development at the Chick-fil-A locations on 69th & Slide and 82nd & Milwaukee, as they discussed components of developing and expanding world-class customer service .

Phil Pirkle presented “Coaching the High Performance Service Team” with high energy and entertaining examples. Brandon Mulkey and Rob Bailey discussed being “REMARKable” and the concept of “Second Mile Service”. The seminar wrapped up as the trio took questions from a full-capacity crowd.

This seminar is part of Chamber University, a series business seminars designed to address critical business topics and offer tools to navigate and thrive in the ever-changing demands of the 21st century workplace.

Chamber University is presented by Covenant Health, and sponsored by American National Bank, United Supermarkets, and Workforce Solutions South Plains. Chick-fil-A at 69th & Slide and 82nd & Milwaukee were the breakfast sponsors for this event.

The next seminar in the series is Chamber University: Social Media, a social media boot camp which includes best practices, driving word of mouth location technologies, and three case studies. This will be hosted on Texas Tech University’s campus at the Rawl’s College of Business on June 18, 2014 from 8 to 11:30 a.m. The speaker is Lin Humphrey, a Ph.D. Candidate and professor at the Rawls College of Business. Humphrey has been named

the 2011 Global Mobile Marketing Academic of the Year and the 2013 Texas Business Hall of Fame Scholar.

The Lubbock Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, led by 2014 Chairwoman Alona Beesinger, announced the reorganized structure of the Chamber brought about by strategic planning changes.

A result of this new structure included two promotions within their staff. Norma Ritz Johnson, CCE (Certified Chamber Executive) and IOM (Institute for Organization Management), has been promoted to Executive Vice President and will oversee the Government and Community Relations functions. In this new role, she will also oversee Chamber external programs.

Sheri Nugent, IOM, was promoted to CFO and Vice President of Administration. Nugent will oversee financial processes as well as internal Chamber operations. Johnson and Nugent have been with the Chamber over nine years.

Former Lubbock Mayor Marc McDougal of McDougal Companies shares what it’s like to be a political candidate based on his past experiences.

Imagine Lubbock Together Update For the past few months, the Imagine Lubbock Together Steering Committee has been working on the implementation phase of the plan you helped create.

This committee, led by Chairwoman Connie Wharton, is now focused on connecting the efforts of individuals, the private sector, city government and nonprofit organizations to the eight elements outlined in the plan. Over 10 organizational and strategic planning meetings have occurred to create partnerships that combine resources and existing efforts to achieve the goals set by the citizens.

“Those who live in our hometown definitely care about Lubbock, and it really showed during the entire visioning and planning process,” Chairwoman Wharton explained.

Currently, information is being updated on the ILT website.

There are over 900 registered site users, and almost 11,000 visitors to the site. The website continues to grow and the progress and activity of the emerging task forces will be reported. The website can be found at www.imaginelubbocktogether.com.

One committee that has been formed as a direct result of the plan is the Downtown Committee. The committee is led by ILT Steering Committee members Jim Gilbreath and Steve Beasley and has 11 members representing many aspects of downtown redevelopment. Discussions are being held to determine the next steps to enact the plan’s primary recommendation to

revitalize the core of downtown. The committee is set to have its next meeting in early March.

The Healthy Lubbock Task Force is also meeting regularly to collaborate on efforts to emphasize healthy lifestyles, as a primary recommendation of the plan. Healthy Lubbock has been in existence before the visioning process, as part of the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, and is working to support this ILT element by bringing together other entities in the community and promoting healthy lifestyles from birth to seniors through education, physical activity and health and well-being in families. The coalition continues to establish itself in its organizational meeting next month by bringing partners together and discussing next steps.

The general consensus at the organizational meetings is that while each element and goal is different, they all overlap and connect to each other. This notion has led to increasing collaboration between partners and the continuation of determining all of the key players that can assist with the goals of the plan. Each element, and its steps, is part of a bigger picture. The ILT Steering Committee is in agreement that this phase of the plan is comparable to competing in a marathon, rather than a sprint.

December Ambassador of the Month: Tina Schooler The Chamber congratulates Tina Schooler on being the December Ambassador of the Month.

“I attended my first Business After Hours last January, and was so impressed with how progressive and active the Lubbock Chamber is,” Schooler said. “Before I left that night, I asked Colleen Evans how I could get more involved and she replied ‘become an Ambassador’ and so I did.” Schooler has been an active Chamber Ambassador since March 2013.

Schooler realizes the value of the opportunities the Chamber has to offer. “As an Ambassador, I have been able to meet many people in the community as well as build long lasting relationships,” said Schooler. “I encourage members to get involved and take advantage of the many valuable resources and events that the Chamber offers. The most important part of being an Ambassador is meeting new people and developing friendships.”

Schooler’s favorite Ambassador events to attend are the ribbon cuttings and Business After Hours events. “I enjoy celebrating new business openings and business milestone,” said Schooler. Her favorite Chamber event is the Hub City BBQ. “I am involved with the Business Expo and hope to get involved with the Hub City BBQ,” stated Schooler.

Schooler is the Marketing Director for Raider Plumbing, which she and her husband, Bob, own. As Marketing Director, Schooler’s position entails everything that deals with branding and marketing. She is responsible for Raider Plumbing’s logo, web design, social media, promotional items and Chamber involvement as an Ambassador.

Outside of the Chamber, Schooler stays involved as a member of both Ambucs and Mosaic, as well as a volunteer at

Ronald McDonald House. “I strongly believe one person can make a difference,” Schooler stated, “These two organizations are dedicated to creating independence and a life of opportunities for people with physical and intellectual disabilities.”

Business of the Month: Delijah Salon & Boutique

The Chamber congratulates Delijah Salon & Boutique, February Business of the Month. Delijah, a plush full-service salon & boutique located at 3335 70th Street, Suite B, has been a member since February of 2012. Delijah’s full service hair salon services include Hairdreams hair extensions, keratin smoothing treatment, haircuts for men, women & children, color correction, highlight, lowlight, formal up-dos and styles, facial waxing and make-up application. Delijah also offers custom organic spray tan and features the latest in fashion.

Owner, Laurie Caballero, said she appreciates her Chamber experience. “The Chamber has helped me get new clients, just by being a member. My name was thrown out there by you guys and people come in saying ‘I saw you were a chamber member,’

so I wanted to support you. I got involved shortly after I opened my doors.”

Caballero has kept Delijah Salon & Boutique an active Chamber member through participating in, both, Business Mercado and Business Expo. “Anytime I can make a donation of gift certificates for different events, I do. That has helped us as well,” Caballero said.

Caballero said being a member of the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce has helped increase business relationships, as well as bring in new clients. “I know that if I ever needed advice on how to run my business or how to market, I can ask a fellow Chamber member and get that help. It’s like a family.”

Leadership Lubbock: Arts & Education Day

Lubbock Independent School District Superintendent Dr. Berhl Robertson gave a warm smile as he welcomed the Leadership Lubbock class to Arts & Education Day at the Byron Martin Advanced Technology Center. The program continued with a tour of the facilities and the class learned of the many technical and certification programs available to students. David Miller, Executive Coach for Spirit Ranch, presented “Together Has Power,” which addressed the many facets of working as a team while gaining valuable leadership experience. Lynda Dutton, Executive Director for Literacy Lubbock, described the personal satisfaction in helping others learn to read through Literacy Lubbock and Melissa Grimes, Principal of Studio West, followed with an introduction to Studio West and the value of having the business setting tell a story that will have customers returning for more.

Lubbock Christian University President Tim Perrin spoke with pride of his history with the school and how his roots are anchored in a community that embraces educational attainment. The Louise Hopkins Underwood Center for the Arts (LHUCA) gave a variety of presentations to provide students with an in-depth knowledge of our community arts. Elizabeth Regner explained the Lubbock Arts Alliance followed by an introduction to the Lubbock Entertainment and Performing Arts Association (LEPAA) by Tim Collins. The Flatlands Dance Theatre gave an amazing performance prior to a tour of the LHUCA facilities.

Dr. Duane Nellis greeted the Leadership Lubbock class at the Texas Tech University School of Music and a performance by the School of Music left everyone wanting more. A presentation

of Art on the Llano with Joe Arredondo gave students a better understanding of the expansive arm of the arts on the South Plains.

The next Leadership Lubbock class is an overnight trip to Austin for State Government Days on Feb. 24-25.

New Century Leadership: Media Trends & Topics Day

The air was thick with anticipation as the students boarded the bus in preparation for a fun-filled day of activities on Media Trends and Topics Day. Chad Elrod, Marketing Director of the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, spun a historical tale of our local newspaper followed by a tour of the timeline that adorned the walls of the newly remodeled offices. Chamber staff members Tammi Boozer and Haily Assiter described the Chamber’s avenues of promoting its business members through the various marketing venues. The students were given the opportunity to write-up and practice their group Public Service Announcements (PSA).

Upon arrival at the KCBD-TV Channel 11 studio, a brief presentation preceded the afternoon broadcast with Sharon Maines and Steve Divine. Ramar Communications provided the perfect venue for the five student groups to experience all aspects of social media, beginning with a warm welcome from President and

TV General Manager, Brad Moran, and Sales Manager, Sherry Saffle. Jeff Klotzman and Kurt Kiser provided the historical evolution of broadcasting in their careers while committee member Britta Tye engaged students in a candid talk about the dangers of social media. Each student group then practiced and taped their creatively produced radio and television PSAs, thus ending another successful New Century Leadership class day.

The next New Century Leadership class is City/County Government Day on Wed., Feb. 19.

Travel with the Chamber!

Experience one of today’s most popular vacation spots, Costa Rica. Despite its size, Costa Rica has some of the most beautiful rainforests in the world in addition to volcanoes, pristine forests, tropical beaches and exotic wildlife.
