Stars & Stripes Goes Digital
All three screens at the Stars & Stripes Drive-In have recently transitioned to being projected digitally. This change immediately and noticeably enhances the brightness and image quality that is projected on the screen. The very first drive-in to go digital in the nation did so in July of last year. However, Stars & Stripes Drive-In and Midland’s Big Sky Drive-In are the first multi-screen driveins to go fully digital. Stars & Stripes Drive-In opened in 2003 with two screens. Owner Ryan Smith expanded and introduced a third screen in 2007. Smith has always tried to provide a unique experience for movie goers. Now the Stars & Stripes is a mixture of the nostalgic ‘50s Cafe snack bar and the modern picture and sound of the 21st century. Smith has no plans to raise ticket prices. Stars & Stripes is located at 5101 Clovis Highway and opens daily at 7 p.m. Tickets are $6 per person, with children age 5 and younger free. Lubbock’s First Four Star Hotel Announced By Marcie Reno North America’s largest monitoring and leisure travel organization, AAA, has awarded the Overton Hotel & Conference Center their prestigious Four Diamond Award. This recognition makes the Overton Hotel & Conference Center Lubbock’s only Four Diamond rated property and additionally the only Four Diamond rated property in West Texas. “It’s an honor and privilege to receive the Four Diamond rating from AAA” Kurt Metcalf,
General Manager said. “It’s a true testament to the dedication of our employees and we look forward to providing Four Diamond service to our guests.” Four Diamond lodgings ac-
count for just 4 percent of the more than 31,000 AAA rated lodgings. AAA’s Diamond Rating System is the only ratings system that covers all of North America and one of only two that conducts physical, on-site evaluations. It is the only system that uses fulltime, professionally trained evaluators to inspect each property on an annual basis. AAA evaluates more properties than any other rating entity. The Overton Hotel & Con-
ference Center opened in July 2009 and is managed by 1859 Historic Hotels LTD. Two other properties in the 1859 family are rated as Four Diamond by AAA; The Cliff House at Pikes Peak, Colorado and The Brown Hotel, Louisville, Kentucky.

Neugebauer Receives Award U.S. Representative Randy Neugebauer received the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s “Spirit of Enterprise” award on April 28th, 2011. Neugebauer has received the award each year since he was first elected to Congress in 2003. The award is given for supporting the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s position on 70 percent or more of key bills. Approximately 270 of the nation’s 100 senators and 435 representatives received the award for their voting records. “This means a lot to me because I’m just a small-business guy,” Neugebauer said. Neugebauer also met with the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce board and its legislative affairs
committee as part of a swing through the district. Neugebauer spoke on the issue of national debt and commented, “We’re heading for a third multitrillion-dollar deficit. And we’re going to hit the debt ceiling in a few days.” “We’ve got to figure out how to fix this, and not leave a legacy of debt,” Neugebauer said. Source: Walt Nett, Lubbock Avalanche-Journal

Business of the Month
Mears Mazda Volvo Mears Mazda Volvo has been named the June 2011 Lubbock Chamber of Commerce Business of the Month. Mears Mazda Volvo was established in 1971 by James Mears. It began as a used car lot, but in 1975 it became Plains Mazda. They were located in the old Burger Chef building off Avenue Q, and at the time, could only fit two cars in the repair shop. Now the Mears facility and car lot sits on five acres of land off of Spur 327 and Iola. Current owner Bob Mears says the success of the company can be attributed to the employees. There are currently 31 employees at this location, which was built in 2001. Bob Mears began helping out with the family business when he was in high school in 1975. He would tune up cars, wash and detail them as well. He and his brother Andy began running the business in 1982. Andy is in charge of the service department and Bob handles the sales department. Additionally, the Mears’ cousin runs the parts department. Bob Mears says the importance of keeping the business family oriented is to stay in touch with customers through the years. Working with his brother and cousin allows the family to help each other because they have the same goals

and are on the same page. The company sells around 800 cars per year including Mazda, Volvo and used cars. Providing products and services that are good for the consumer is a top priority for the company. “You can’t go wrong with a Mazda or Volvo,” Mears said. “They are the type of cars you sell your friends and neighbors and never have a worry.” Mears has three daughters and two granddaughters. In his spare time he enjoys building his airplane and bowling. Mears went to Europe with his brother to compete in a World Cup competition for flying model combat planes in May. The Mears’ are two of only six U.S. pilots that were invited to the Cup. Mears Mazda Volvo is one of the few local and family owned and operated stores left in Texas.
