The Lubbock

May 2011
“Xchange Ideas, Xplore Solutions” is the theme of the 2011 Lubbock Business Expo, proudly presented by the Chamber and Signs On The Go, on Thursday, May 12, at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center. The day starts with a ribbon cutting at 9 a.m. and the show ends with the close of most exhibits at 5 p.m., followed by a Business After Hours sponsored by Visit Lubbock. A list of exhibitors is included in this newsletter. For more information, visit www.lubbockbusinessexpo.com. In 2010, more than 7,000 people attended the Expo, the Chamber’s crown jewel event for business-to-business and business-to-general public networking. This year, almost 200 companies will exhibit. Exhibitors and attendees alike enjoy the enthusiastic, business-friendly atmosphere of the Expo and say they have done weeks’ and months’ worth of business in that single day. “This is the largest business-to-business trade show on the South Plains,” said Jim
Gerlt, 2011 Expo chairman. “You will not want to miss this event, it is an incredible opportunity to meet and greet exhibitors and attendees alike in a comfortable, energizing atmosphere!” Chamber members will receive complimentary tickets to the Expo in the mail, and complimentary tickets will also be available at the Chamber during regular business hours until noon Wednesday, May 11. Tickets will be sold at the door for $5. “Restaurant Row” will return this year after a successful launch in 2010 with a dedicated
section in the Pedestrian Mall available for food service vendors. Please be sure to thank your 2011 Expo Committee Chairman, Jim Gerlt, Bacon Heights Baptist Church and Co-Chairwoman Kathy Timms, Bates-Wells Promotional Products. “It takes a small army to produce such a large event and it would not be possible without our dedicated hardworking volunteer committee and the Ambassador’s,” added Kathy Timms. Total Resource Campaign Works Toward Goal So far, volunteers with the Chamber’s Total Resource Campaign have raised over $100,000 toward our goal of $350,000! Congratulations to our top three producers: Alex Martinez, Chris Ramirez and Jake Seideman! Additionally, thank you to their employers: Atmos Energy, Suddenlink Communications and Hugo Reed & Associates.
The Chamber will host a Cinco de Mayo Luncheon on Thursday, May 5, from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. at The Scottish Rite Center, located at 1101 70th Street. Keynote speaker will be former U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales. Emcee will be Abner Euresti of KCBD-NewsChannel 11. Cost is $15/person for Chamber members and $20/person for prospective members. Sponsorships are available; contact Jorge Quirino at (806) 761-7005 or jorge.quirino@ lubbockbiz.org. For more information or to register, call (806) 761-7000 or email info@lubbockbiz. org.
Led by Linda Gaither with WestMark REALTORS, the campaign is an eight-week blitz of Chamber member volunteers encouraging businesses to get involved and make connections while assisting them with choosing options best suited to meet the organization’s marketing needs. During the Total Resource Campaign, members will choose from a “menu” of Chamber programs, products and services in which to invest for the remainder of 2011 and through 2012. Once the member is contacted through the TRC, they will not be contacted for these programs again, which streamlines the process for both the business and the Chamber. The company only has to commit once, which is beneficial for budgetary planning. “This is good for business in Lubbock because when you are involved in your Chamber, everyone wins,” Gaither said. “The Chamber works tirelessly to strengthen, promote and serve their member businesses, and they provide so many opportunities for the members to reap those benefits. Being a member of the Chamber has helped my business grow, and those gains turn over numerous times in our economy.”

La Paloma a Program of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly La Paloma is a Program of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly, or PACE, funded by MHMR. Elderly members of the community, who are 55 years or older and deemed by the state to need nursing home care, come to La Paloma daily in order to remain at home. The program offers preventative, primary, acute and long term care to its patients. This is done through the work of physicians, therapists, nurses, social workers and other faculty who provide care as needed to the patients. La Paloma offers a place to exercise, receive medical attention and socialize by spending the day around other people. Instead of a nursing home, participants are scheduled to attend a certain number of days out of the week that the staff decides necessary
for each person. Transportation services pick up and take home patients, as well as transport them to and from doctor’s appointments and other places. Participation at La Paloma is funded by Medicare or Medicaid, based on the patients status, and can also be paid out of pocket. La Paloma is located at 4010 22nd street. The facility is only one year old and the staff offers tours to interested individuals. Please call (806) 740-1500 for more information.

Lubbock County Auditor’s Office Wins Award Congratulations to the Lubbock County Auditor’s office for receiving the Texas Comptroller Leadership Circle Gold Member award for the second year in a row. The award encourages and recognizes local governments across the state that focus on giving taxpayers a transparent look at local expenditures. These include the budget, the annual financial report and the check register. Lubbock scored 19 out of 20
points on the ratings criteria for this award and set a high standard for financial transparency online. The award goes to local governments that are opening their books to the public, providing clear and consistent pictures of spending and sharing information in a user-friendly format that lets taxpayers easily drill down for more information. Keep up the good work!
Crown Point Health Suites Shows Off New Facility Crown Point Health Suites recently held a ribbon cutting and open house to showcase their new 47,000 square foot facility. The locally owned and operated skilled nursing facility has 5-star accommodations including classically trained chefs in the kitchens of each of its three houses. “We’ve been told we look like a hotel, an assisted living, a resort,” says Rick Ruble, owner of the new 9 million dollar building, “but never a nursing home and that’s exactly what we wanted!” The medical industry as a whole has been moving toward the future with the exception of skilled nursing facilities which remain resistant to change. The owners decided to meet with industry consultants and travelled throughout the country to find an exemplary, culture
changing facility model. Billy D. Jewell, III, CFO for Crown Point Health Suites stated, “We wanted the best. The best amenities, the best care, the best concept. Everything had to be centered around our guests. So what we finally came up with, no one else in the state of Texas currently has. It’s exciting!” Three individual houses with vaulted ceilings, a large therapy gym with indoor and outdoor applications, well furnished private rooms with both tile and granite sinks, private showers, flat screen televisions with cable, all day menus, relaxing spas, medical message services, personal phones, and internet cafes are all amenities the facility has to offer. For a personal tour, questions or directions, please call (806) 687-6640.

Business of the Month
McDougal Companies McDougal Companies has been named the May 2011 Lubbock Chamber of Commerce Business of the Month. McDougal Companies is a multi-faceted family business, owned by the McDougal family, that operates a family of companies devoted to providing quality housing. McDougal’s group of employees are also considered part of the family. “Any success the McDougal Companies has is due to our dedicated employees,” President Mike McDougal said. The company’s mission is to strive to be the best in the housing industry by aspiring to the highest standard of service in a unique and friendly atmosphere. The company incorporates concerns for community, family, customer satisfaction, integrity and quality. “Recognition from your peers is always the most meaningful,” McDougal said. “We’re appreciative of the honor, and of the Chamber’s role in promoting a healthy business climate in our community.” McDougal Companies also received the Water Smart Award from the Chamber’s Water Conservation Council. McDougal Companies owns properties and apartments throughout Lubbock. In July of 2010, the company relocated their offices to
50th street and West Loop 289. The new location features an outdoor landscape that requires minimal water. The plants included in the landscape are not ones that need to be watered extensively, which is helping cut down the amount of water the company uses. The landscape resembles that of West Texas in its aesthetic quality. McDougal recognizes the importance of water conservation. “In West Texas, water is such a vital resource,” McDougal said. The company uses a drip water system in which water is absorbed slowly into the soil, directly into the root zone, and no water is wasted on non-growth areas. This also prevents run-off or streets getting wet. McDougal Companies have also implemented water conscious efforts at two of their properties. The company got permission from the city to cut drains in the curbs to take care of the run-off issue. A drain collects water into a tank, whether it is from rain or previous watering. The water then comes out of the sprinkler system and onto the grass. “With the cost of water, the amount used adds up pretty quick,” McDougal said.
