Sidewalk Prophets to perform at Community Prayer Breakfast By Sarah Harlan

Since 1988 when Ronald Reagan declared the first Thursday of the month of May as a National Day of Prayer our nation has gathered together through church services, prayer walks, and many kinds of worship and celebration. The Lubbock Chamber of Commerce will host a community prayer breakfast in honor of the National Day of Prayer. On May 2nd, the chart-topping Contemporary Christian band, Sidewalk Prophets, will perform while the Lubbock community joins together to Pray for America, which is the national theme for 2013. The Sidewalk Prophets have been on tour with some of the biggest stars in Christian music history, including MercyMe and Francesca Battistelli. With over 35 show dates from now until the end of August, the Chamber is excited to be able to say they are stopping in Lubbock at the Civic Center to celebrate this national day of observance. The scripture for this year’s National Day of Prayer is Matthew 12:21, “In his name, the nations will put their hope.” With a focus on praying for our country, attendees will be able to fellowship while honoring religion and community. Breakfast will include biscuits and gravy, as well as fruit, bacon and eggs. “I have attended the Community Prayer Breakfast in the past and it’s refreshing to connect with your professional colleagues and friends in a way that is generally not a part of the business world,” said Chairman, Carlos Morales. Tickets are still available. The breakfast line will open at 7:00 a.m. and the program will be 7:30 - 8:30 a.m. Contact Phyllis Jones for more information at (806) 761-7000.

Business of the Month: Chick-fil-A By Hallie Davis

Congratulations to Chick-fil-A of Lubbock for being named business of the Month! The four member locations are owned and operated by three different people, and the award goes to each -- Chick-fil-A on 82nd, South Plains Crossing, Raiderpark and the location in the South Plains Mall. Brandon Mulkey, owner operator of the South Plains Crossing and 82nd Street locations, said his locations are involved with the Chamber because the organization does so much for his business. “It’s a natural fit,” he said. In addition to Mulkey being on the Chamber’s Board of Directors, Chick-fil-A is involved with the Hub City BBQ,

Business Expo and the annual Golf Tournament. Recently, Mulkey spoke at a Chamber University seminar on customer service. Chick-fil-A is also the title sponsor of the Chamber’s Leadership Lubbock classes. Chick-fil-A’s upcoming Leadercast is a nationwide event, and Mulkey said he hopes as many people as possible will attend. Ultimately, he said, being involved with the Chamber is just the right choice for any kind of business. The more involved a business is, the more they will get out of their membership. “The Chamber of Commerce does a great job of promoting business in Lubbock,” he said, “and promoting the things that make Lubbock a better place to be.”

TRC Reaches Stretch Goal

By Sarah Harlan and Hallie Davis

Only six weeks through the eight-week Total Resource Campaign (TRC), Lubbock Chamber of Commerce volunteers have successfully reached their goal. “I couldn’t be more proud of this year’s volunteers. We knew they would succeed, but this is even sooner than expected. When I said I wanted to obliterate this year’s goal, they took me seriously,” said TRC Chairwoman Jennifer Frager of Suddenlink Communications. Volunteers are asked to visit with Chamber members and potential members during the eight-week campaign and secure sponsorships for Chamber events and programs over the next year. The Chamber reached their initial goal thanks to FirstCare Health Plans’ sponsorship of the Chamber’s 2013 Annual Report.

#LBKTRC2013

Lubbock Chamber of Commerce Chairman of the Board for the Chamber said, “Once again, FirstCare has proven to be terrific partners with both our health care plan as well as their overall support of the Chamber. Thanks again to our FirstCare friends for being true champions with the Chamber.” The Chamber set a stretch goal of $425,000 and quickly achieved it as well. The end total reached nearly $450,000 in sponsorship contracts. “We are amazed at the success of our volunteers,” said Chamber of Commerce Chairman Carlos Morales. “They’ve done a great job, and we will increase our goal next year.” Morales said he knows the volunteer group could achieve even more in the future, and he is excited to see the future of the TRC and the Chamber. The Total Resource Campaign is an eight week iniative during which Chamber volunteers seek out sponsorships for all of the Chamber events for the year. The volunteers compete for prizes as they recruit sponsors, new businesses and involvement from the Lubbock community.

Coffee with Senator Ted Cruz By Samantha Cavenaugh

More than 250 people attended the Chamber’s ‘Coffee with Senator Ted Cruz’ event featuring the junior Texas Senator on April 4 at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center. During a 20 minute presentation, Senator Cruz updated Lubbock citizens on combating unemployment rates and emphasized the importance of growth, mostly through decreased regulation and simplification of the tax code. Cruz vowed to use his term in the Senate to try to increase economic growth from its current 1 percent annual increase to a 3 to 5 percent annual increase through deregulation of government. Cruz focused on how decreased regulation and economic growth will impact small business owners and farmers throughout West Texas. “The regulations that Washington is putting on small businesses, on farmers on ranchers — it’s killing jobs and it doesn’t make any sense,” Cruz said. “We have got to pull that back.” Additionally, Cruz spoke with excitement at the possibilities that West Texas provides for the future in energy research and natural resources. He emphasized West Texas’ part in the

development of new oil and energy sources, including the Cline Shale in Scurry County, saying, “we are opening up breathtaking reserves of oil and natural gas and energy independence for North America is a real possibility in the eminent future.” The Chamber would like to thank the presenting sponsor for the event, StarCare Specialty Health System as well as the diamond sponsor, FirstCare Health Plans.

20 Under 40 Announced

Fearless Champions Formed

The Lubbock Chamber of Commerce and the Young Professionals of Greater Lubbock proudly announce the 2013 20 Under 40 award recipients:

The Lubbock Chamber of Commerce in a partnership with Texas Tech athletics announced the emergence of the Fearless Champions Committee on April 17 at the Texas Tech Club. The new committee, headed by Chairman Mitch Watson, will serve as a liaison between Tech football and local businesses. It will also lend support to infuse excitement within the business sector through the promotion of community and Red Raider spirit to enhance the game day experience for attendees. “That’s what we want to help Texas Tech do, is come out and get people in the stadium,” Watson said. “We want to paint this town red and black on game day. We want to make sure each business is participating and making an appearance for when visitors come in on Friday or Saturday.” Watson said that a football game brings in $3 million to $5 million on an average game day and $12 million to $15 million for a big game. Additionally, this year five of the home football games will be themed to recognize those industries that are important to West Texas. Through game recognition, the community is able to recognize and celebrate the associated corporate sectors, while at the same time increasing attendance at Tech football games. In order to promote spirit activities, the committee will implement Fearless Champs First-Down Friday tailgates twice during the season. Businesses interested in serving on task forces for theme games can contact Audrey DeLeon. Businesses can also request group season tickets by calling 742-TECH.

Spring 2013 WaterSmart Award Winner By Samantha Cavanaugh

Congratulations to Scarborough Specialties for winning the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce Water Conservation Council’s Spring 2013 WaterSmart Award! It didn’t take much to convince Jay Jacobus that introducing a WaterSmart landscape to Scarborough Specialties was the right choice. After attending a Lubbock Chamber Ribbon Cutting at First United Bank, Jacobus spoke with bank owners who convinced him that easy maintenance and decreased costs associated with landscaping were just a few of the positives associated with WaterSmart landscaping. “At first we had fescue grass and we were just watering it all the time, it was crazy. And, to be honest, we weren’t the best at keeping up with the maintenance. Eventually there were weeds, and then we would forget to water it and it started to die, and then it was just ugly,” said Jacobus.

Jason Lipetska, Kristian Cavanough, Jay Jacobus and Aric Johnson pose outside of Scarborough Specialties.

So in order to spruce up the building’s exterior, Scarborough opted for chic, SmartScape water conservative plants with an

emphasis on low maintenance and low moisture. The new garden includes a base of substrate gravel decorated with knock out roses and silver mounds, which are staples in the SmartScape community. Additionally, Scarborough’s irrigation is on a drip system, which allows them to water their landscape weekly as opposed to daily. The ease of maintenance has also allowed the business to cut down on costs by maintaining the landscaping internally. Aric Johnson, an artist at Scarborough with a history in landscaping, has taken part in helping to maintain the building’s landscape. “Really it’s just trimming the winter out of the perennials, a little bit of fertilization and watching out for insects,” Johnson said. Finally, Jacobus hopes that the new addition to the building will inspire other businesses to consider more water conscious options and will appeal to new customers. “More than anything, it has spruced up the look from the street right there,” Jacobus said. “We like the look of it and we know it’s going to be less maintenance, so hopefully that’s how we can carry that on to other people.”

Dr. Al Sacco Jr., Dean of Texas Tech University Whitacre College of Engineering and former NASA astronaut, speaks to the nearly 200 attendees at the TxSWANA conference which was held at the Overton Hotel in April. TxSWANA is the Lone Star Chapter of the Solid Waste Association of North America, made up of over 400 individual members from various areas of the solid waste industry. Our friends at Parkhill Smith & Cooper were instrumental in helping with the conference. In addition to the conference, while in Lubbock they held a golf tournament at Hillcrest Country Club and visited Jarvis Metals Recycling.
