A Message from the Chamber

Since 1913, the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce’s mission of strengthening, promoting and serving its member businesses has positively benefited the entire region and local quality of life.

As the largest business federation on the South Plains, the Chamber represents almost 2,200 members who employ approximately 73,000 workers, and account for around $900 million in economic impact in Lubbock and West Texas. This is accomplished without the use of tax dollars.

Each day, the Chamber strengthens, promotes and serves its member businesses through numerous programs and events. The Chamber advocates on local, state and federal levels and offers diverse programs for both large and small as well as minority-owned businesses.

Costco Wins Water-Smart Award for Spring 2014

The Lubbock Chamber of Commerce is proud to congratulate Costco Wholesale for winning the Spring 2014 Water-Smart Business Award. General Manager Scott Huntington expresses Costco’s gratitude for being recognized and awarded.

“As a new member of the community of Lubbock, it is a great honor to be recognized so early in our time here,” Huntington said. Costco, a national retailer of a range of products and a membership warehouse club, opened to Lubbock’s community in November of 2013. Huntington continues to say that Costco works closely with the cities to meet or exceed the landscaping expectations during the planning phase, “from indigenous plants and eco friendly watering systems, to environmentally conscious décor elements.”

The Chamber recognizes members each quarter for their water-saving measures. The criteria to win can be anything from landscaping to rainfall capture systems to installing low-flow toilets and active promotion of water conservation.

“Our approach is to always do the right thing,” Huntington added. “As a low cost operator, a conservative approach to the use of natural resources is almost always a positive.

The cost savings in terms of maintenance and utilities are a plus as well as the benefit the community derives from having a business partner that is committed to limiting its impact on the environment.”

New Century Leadership Graduation Banquet The Lubbock Chamber of Commerce proudly announces the successful graduation of the 2014 New Century Leadership graduates. Forty-three students celebrated their accomplishments on Mon., April 28, at the Jones AT&T Stadium West Side Stadium Club. The banquet signaled the end of an eight-month leadership development program for local high school juniors.

The Lead Out Loud (LOL) awards were given that evening as well. The LOL awards are given as a result of a points system implemented throughout the duration of the program. Students who display leadership, teamwork, great attitudes and community responsibility attributes are given points.

1st place - Wesley Jackson, Shallowater ISD; 2nd place tie - Gage Nugent, New Deal High School; and Erin Beasley, Monterey High School; 3rd place - Paden Shelburne, Lubbock Christian School

New Century Leadership: Top Secret Day New Century Leadership’s Top Secret Day was filled with excitement and a hint of sadness as students boarded the bus knowing it was the last class day of the year. Armed with snacks, they boldly made their way to the Texas Tech Football Training Facility where they were greeted by Jeff Jones, Manager of the Football Training Facility and Defensive Coordinator Matt Wallerstedt. A presentation, short video, and Q&A provided in-depth knowledge of Texas Tech football and then a tour of the facility culminated in an on-the-field visit.

The Louise Hopkins Underwood Center for the Arts provided a touch of artistic creativity as the students visited and toured the facilities available to the public. Scarborough Specialties

treated the students to a brisket lunch, presentation and tour, and then students made the brief trip to Hub City Fieldhouse where they learned of the College Baseball Hall of Fame and Brooks Wallace Award.

The NCL Olympics drew laughs and further offered a bonding experience for the students as they separated into teams and then tried to outdo each other in a game of stamina, speed and quick reflexes.

The New Century Leadership banquet celebrates the accomplishments of our young stars and will be held on Mon., April 28, at the Jones AT&T Stadium West Side Stadium Club.

Leadership Lubbock: Sports, Recreation & Entertainment Day

“Emulate the leader others want to follow.” Profound words rang a silent echo in the City Bank Rooms of the United Spirit Arena and as Tom Stone, Texas Tech head women’s soccer coach, spoke about the investment and time leaders must take in employee leadership development. Leadership Lubbock was off to an inspirational start, and following a tour of the facilities and some basketball games, the group visited the Texas Tech football facilities for a presentation and to learn about Quarterback Sack, a Ronald McDonald House Charities annual fundraiser. A tour followed with an opportunity to practice kicking a field goal at Jones AT&T Stadium.

Texas Tech Athletics Director, Kirby Hocutt, made a powerful impression with his presentation during lunch, on being a leader, speaking of the future of Texas Tech University Athletics, and his goal of building a culture of character and consequence

through leadership development. Afterwards, a trip to Lowery Field at PlainsCapital Park yielded an amazing presentation from John Osborne (LEDA) about our city’s entertainment venues and the Lubbock Sports Authority. Leadership Lubbock classmate, Raymond Richardson (Lubbock Christian University), presented on the College Baseball Hall of Fame. Lubbock ISD Board of Trustees President, Steve Massengale, spoke of the efforts by LISD to create a high school sports facility to promote community growth, pride, and address a community need. After a tour of Lowery Field at PlainsCapital Park, the class day concluded with a visit to Triple J Chophouse & Brew to learn about the beer brewing process. The final Leadership Lubbock class will be on Fri., May 9, at Leadercast.

The graduation banquet is scheduled for Tues., May 20.

Chamber Issues Official Statement on “Threatened” Listing

Late last month the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced the Lesser Prairie Chicken would be officially listed as “Threatened” species. The Lubbock Chamber had advocated for the species not to be officially listed but to allow voluntary conservation agreements instead. Below is an official statement released by the Chamber last month upon having learned of the federal agency’s move.

Statement of Chamber Chairwoman Alona Beesinger Regarding March 27 USFWS “Threatened” Listing for Lesser Prairie Chicken

The Lubbock Chamber of Commerce is disappointed in today’s “Threatened Species” listing of the Lesser Prairie Chicken by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

This issue is extremely important to us, given that a “threatened” listing under the Endangered Species Act for the Lesser Prairie Chicken has a potentially significant impact on the economy of West Texas and Eastern New Mexico.

However, we are encouraged that an unprecedented special rule regarding multi-state conservation plans was also part of this misguided listing. We hope this will allow the agriculture and energy industries to address this listing while not hamper-

ing the economy, job growth and farming and ranching activities.

Looking to the future, we hope common sense and sound science will be utilized to account for ongoing species recovery developments. We continue to urge that economic impact be utilized in such assessments as well as in the listing process.

Although the listing process for wildlife species is not required to include economic impact, the Lubbock Chamber reminds federal officials that listings such as that issued today do have an impact on jobs and economic growth for local economies.

Crop production in the High Plains region accounts for about 15 percent of the entire area’s economy. When livestock production is figured in, the agriculture industry as a whole attributes to about one-third of the total local economy. Almost 20 percent of the nation’s conventional energy production and an exponentially increasing amount of renewable energy such as wind power originates in West Texas.

We stand by the job creators in the energy and agriculture industries as they deal with today’s decision.

Imagine Lubbock Together Public Information Sharing Session

The Imagine Lubbock Together Steering Committee invites you to our next Public Information Sharing Session on Tuesday, May 13. The meeting will be held from 5:30-7 p.m. at the ‘Studios at 5th & J’ in the downtown arts & entertainment district (1106 5th St.). This Charles Adams Studio Project building is located at 5th and Avenue J, directly north of the Louise Hopkins Underwood Center for the Arts and directly east of the Post Office.

This information sharing session will give you the opportunity to learn what has been happening with the Imagine Lub-

bock Together eight key element areas since the Implementation Phase started last July. We have enjoyed continued progress with our many partners on the community-wide strategic plan based on our previous year-long visioning process.

RSVPs are requested but you may come and go as time allows. We want to thank everyone for their previous involvement and continued participation in the ILT project. We would not be where we are today without the help, support and collaboration of all of our partners, sponsors, committees, task forces and participants.

2014 Total Resource Campaign: Above and Beyond The Lubbock Chamber of Commerce staff along with volunteers and sponsors will celebrate at their Total Resource Campaign Victory Party on May 2 at the Lazy S Rock Ranch.

Volunteers with the Total Resource Campaign (TRC) reached more than 107 percent of the final goal of $450,000 by April 30 with additional contributions to come. Almost 350 member businesses took advantage of the sponsorship opportunities in the TRC, and the Chamber could not have made this progress without the hard work and dedication of its volunteers. The official number of contributions will be released in May.Top five cash volunteers for the 2014 TRC include Myndee Pool of Carpet Tech, Marcus Young of United Supermarkets, Brad Wilson of SouthWest Bank, Chuck Parr of American National Bank, and Grace Garza of FirstCare Health Plans.

During the TRC, members chose from a “menu” of Chamber programs, products and services in which to invest for the remainder of 2014 and through the first half of 2015. Once the member is contacted through the TRC, the member will not be contacted for these programs again, which streamlines the process for both the business and the Chamber. The company only has to commit once, which is beneficial for budgetary planning.

March Ambassador of the Month: Rex Andrews Rex Andrews is the Chamber’s March Ambassador of the Month. Andrews has been a Chamber Ambassador for four years.

He has been named Ambassador of the Month three times. He was Ambassador of the Year in 2012. As the Co-Chair of the Ambassador Program this year, Andrews will serve as the Chairman of the program next year.

“The most rewarding part about being an ambassador is the relationships,” Andrews stated.

Andrews became an ambassador in 2010 because he enjoys and appreciates the networking opportunities that the Chamber Ambassador Program offers.

“It gives me a lot of good connections,” Andrews said.

His favorite Ambassador events to attend are the ribbon cuttings. His favorite Chamber events are Business After Hours.

Andrews has been a Sales Representative for 25 years. He is currently employed by Edge Concepts, LLC, Edge Homes, Innovative Designs, Metro L&L, LLC, and Shaded Acres Tree Farm.

Andrews’ engagement with Chamber activities keeps the companies he represents involved in the Chamber on a weekly basis.

“It keeps me up to date on what’s happening and what’s coming to the city of Lubbock,” Andrews said. “This is highly important being in the building industry.”

Andrews stays heavily involved in Lubbock’s business community as well as the Chamber, where he serves on the Golf Committee, Business Expo Committee, and Total Resource Campaign. As a team captain for the Chamber’s 2014 Total Resource Campaign, Andrews has exhibited a strong lead for his team to follow. At this point, Andrews has completed 76 percent of his team’s TRC goal. The team, as a whole, has achieved 122 percent of their goal.

Outside of the Chamber, Andrews serves as Chairman of the Board for Alliance Federal Credit Union. He also serves on the Make a Wish Foundation’s North Texas’s Board. Andrews is heavily involved in West Texas Home Builders, and he coaches his sixyear-old granddaughter’s softball team.

Congratulations, Team Soliz, Ambassador Team of the Month! Team Soliz finished March with 371 points and 67 percent participation.

The Chamber’s ambassador program is comprised of 189 ambassadors, representing their member businesses.

These 189 ambassadors are split up into five teams. Ambassadors compete, every

month, for the most patricipation in ambassador events.

Ambassadors are most commonly seen welcoming new businesses and helping existing businesses celebrate milestones at ribbon cuttings and ground breakings. They also serve as greeters and hosts for monthly luncheon meetings, Business After Hours, Cham-

ber 101, and a number of other Chamber special events, receptions, meetings, etc.

May Business of the Month: Montelongo’s Mexican Restaurant

The Chamber extends sincere congratulations to Montelongo’s Mexican Restaurant, May Business of the Month. Montelongo’s has been a Chamber member since 2008. Owner Rudy Rosales’ grandmother and uncle played vital roles in the founding of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

Rosales said “Chamber first” has never been just a slogan.

Rosales and his staff make extra efforts to volunteer anything they can to help and support the Chamber.

Rosales and his staff realize and value all of the opportunities the Chamber offers. These opportunities are not only realized and valued by Montelongo’s staff, but these opportunities are also seized. Montelongo’s takes full advantage of the Chamber and it’s support of Lubbock businesses.

“The membership and networking opportunities have forged relationships, both professional and personal, that I consider invaluable,“ Rosales said.

“The organization, Commerciantes Organizados Mexico America (COMA), as it was named originally, was essential in helping Hispanic businesses grow,“ Rosales stated. “Joining the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce just makes good business sense.“
