Imagine Lubbock Together: Vision Summit It’s time to finally imagine Lubbock together at the Vision Summit on Thursday, October 18 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center.

The Summit will bring closure to the brainstorming phase of Imagine Lubbock Together. The information gathered from the Summit will start the foundation of a strategic plan for the future of Lubbock.

“Our recent public idea gathering meetings were just a first step in gaining input from the community at large. We expect the upcoming Summit to be the largest public meeting in Lubbock’s history,” said Imagine Lubbock Together co-chairwoman Connie Wharton.

The Vision Summit allows participants to review and prioritize goals and principles

gathered from both imaginelubbocktogether. com and the public idea gatherings held in September.

“We now have more than 1,400 ideas submitted from the Lubbock community that will soon be organized and categorized for the Summit,” said Imagine Lubbock Together cochairman David Seim.

Each participant will be given an electronic keypad to facilitate the discussion and

instantaneously prioritize ideas, their merits and principles.

Keypad polling and small group discussions give people an opportunity to effectively begin prioritizing the ideas that will shape Lubbock’s future.

The Vision Summit takes Imagine Lubbock Together to a bigger scale. This will be the largest public meeting in Lubbock’s city history. To ensure that you will be able to participate in keypad polling, please RSVP before October 11 to info@lubbockbiz.org and plan to arrive early.

Following the Summit, on December 1, the Lubbock Charrette will continue public input on the strategic plan with a hands-on workshop.

• Be selective about who you accept as a friend on a social network.

Identity thieves might create fake profiles in order to get information from you.

The best defense is an offense of awareness. Empower yourself by: • Understanding the privacy policies of the social network you join, as well as the policies for games and apps you download.

• Know that everything you put on a social networking site is permanent, and could become public.

Hub City BBQ Exceeds Expectations The Lubbock Chamber of Commerce and Suddenlink hosted the Hub City BBQ Cookoff on Thursday, September 20th. The event was held on Broadway between avenues N and K and attracted more than 7,500 attendees.

Chris Abers, chairman of the Hub City BBQ Cook-off, said that smiling faces and people having a great time is what the BBQ is all about.

“The barbeque was a great success this year,” said Abers. “This might have been the biggest crowd we have had yet. However, it wouldn’t be possible without the hard work of the numerous Chamber volunteers and staff.

I look forward to seeing the BBQ grow even more next year.”

Attendees enjoyed great BBQ and entertainment by Granger Smith, Jason Nutt and Mariachi Carino. 100 teams participated in the friendly competition in professional, corporate and amateur experience levels.

Broadway Booster Program: Chamber Companies can Earn Season Tickets Celebrity Attractions - Lubbock’s local Broadway presenter - and the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce are working together in the exclusive “Broadway Booster” program that offers chamber members the opportunity to earn free season tickets to the Broadway series.

Celebrity Attractions is offering two of free season tickets for every five pairs purchased by a chamber member business. A season ticket secures the same seat for each of the four shows on the Broadway season.

Cotton Research Celebrated by Texas Tech By: Seshadri Ramkumar Texas Tech University (Lubbock, USA, September 19, 2012)— Texas Tech University celebrated cotton research by highlighting unique cotton programs with a video release.

Lubbock in the High Plains of Texas is the epicenter of cotton production and research.

High Plains, which produces about 25% of the total US cotton crop, is the largest contiguous cotton patch in the world.

TTU since its founding in the early 1900s has been at the forefront of cotton research.

Collaborative research with the industry has significantly enhanced the quality and the yield of cotton produced in United States.

TTU celebrated its achievements in cotton research by declaring this past Saturday’s football game as “Celebrate Cotton: We Clothe America.” Town & gown and the cotton industry all joined hands in highlighting the general public about the importance of cotton and significance of cotton research.

ton Research” was shown to a large gathering, just before the kick-off of the game between TTU and University of New Mexico. The video provides a snapshot of a myriad of research and development activities that is taking place with respect to cotton at TTU. Video highlights Bayer CropScience, Fibertect® innovative technology and denim runway competition.

Cliff Hillin and Chris Abers

United Supermarkets and X8 Environmental, Inc. are co-honorees for the October Business of the Month in appreciation of the excellent leadership and hard work of Chris Abers, 2012 Hub City BBQ Chairman, and Cliff Hillin, Co-Chairman. Both will be honored at the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce October Board Meeting.

Chris Abers is the General Manager of United Supermarkets at 82nd and Frankford. Cliff Hillin is the Senior Vice-President of Geosciences for X8 Environmental.

“With 7,500 attendees and 99 cooking teams, this years’ BBQ was the largest to date”, said Tim Collins, Chairman of the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce. “Chris and Cliff brought their leadership, management and operational skills to the Hub City BBQ with extraordinary results – and we are grateful”.

Join Us at the South Plains Career Expo Tuesday - October 30, 2012 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. - Lubbock Civic Center This collaborative, interactive event is hosted by Workforce Solutions South Plains. The Career Expo allows students to hear from professionals about their chosen career field, see aspects of the career through interactive, hands-on exhibits and develop a better understanding of the career opportunities available in our region.

Why sponsor the Career Expo?

With so many different career pathways and opportunities students are exposed to, it is often overwhelming and intimidating. So many students find themselves settling into a career because they don’t know enough about what exists beyond their classroom, community or family. The South Plains Career Expo provides exposure to over 200 career opportunities within 16 career clusters to area high school students.

How is the Career Expo different than other college/career days?

The South Plains Career Expo is focused on helping students see more opportunities and pathways that exist for them after high school. This unique, hands-on, interactive event brings together more than 500 business partners to provide exposure to their chosen career field. At the 11th annual Career Expo, more than 4,000 area high school students got the chance to visit with these business partners and form a better idea of the opportunities that exist in our region.

Students also visit with the higher education partner that provides the education and training needed to enter the career field. Students see the educational opportunities from a technical certificate up to a professional degree.

Students also hear from the bachelor degree and professional degree programs at Texas Tech University, Lubbock Christian University, Wayland Baptist University and South Plains College. This collaboration allows the Career Expo to provide a full spectrum of training and education needed on certain career pathways.

How can my business get involved?

South Plains Career Expo is always looking for new businesses to partner and participate in the Career Expo. This invite is a free opportunity for businesses to outreach to over 4,000 area high school students that are trying to plan for their future career. The input and partnership businesses provide at the Career Expo lead to lasting relationships with students and other business partners.
