New Urban-Rural Park Recovery of the ex industrial area “SPEA” - Narni Scalo (Italy) 1.1 Graduation thesis Roma Tre Univesity of Rome Architecture Faculty Corso di Laurea Magistrale in progettazione architettonica 2013 thesis in: Composizione architettonica Rel: Prof. Arch. Valerio Palmieri cor: Arch. Massimo Acito Luca Ciliani Award winner: Naturalistic Engineering Award for Quality Mediterranean Landscape “2013 edition Published in: http://www.architettura.uniroma3.it/studilavori_categoria.html?menu_sx=6&bp=6_ param&hl=tesi

The project area is the “gateway “ to Terni, placed below the historic town of Narni. The small village of Narni Scalo in fact, began as an industrial settlement ( only after the construction of the Civitavecchia – Ancona railway line ) in a flat area surrounded by hills , where they still remain tangible the presence of an ancient Roman centuriation. The building’ fabrics has developed linearly along the route of the Via Flaminia and it rails parallel to it, and at the latter , there is also a barrier. The urban center is isolated on one side by the hills and the E45 route, on the other side, the railroad and the industrial zone separete it from the River Nera and the surrounding agricultural areas . The former industrial area “ SPEA “ is located in a strategic position and the re-development of the site into a technology park would allow a connection between the city and its river , a greenway , through the creation of an “ urban park “ and paths Raised crossing the railroad tracks. Inspired by the division of the building fabric in swaddling “functional areas” ( services - residential - commercial ) , the concept of the master plan was based on groups of identification of intervention. The first one is the urban territory , Narni , which presents a particular lack of green areas

( only a park , linked to the school ) . The second is, in addition to the recovery peri-urban belt of industrial products , it contains the new urbanization , which represents real visual and acoustic barriers , protecting the park from the railway and the industrial areas. the project provides several functions, including the new technology hub Ternano (laboratories , offices and services) , a business incubator , a university connected with the hub and a new public sports center , but nonetheless linked to the university. In front of the new buildings there is a linear park , mainly shrubby vegetation , and then get to the central park, where various forest vegetation are present , including a small area of lowland forest ,it is integrated with regular and monocultural planting in order to differentiate it from existing one. Inside there is a historical path that connects all the various pre-existing military (underground deposits). The last band is the agricultural one, in fact, the fields which border the site are embedded, integrated and regularized , and then get to the new pedestrian and cycle path that runs along the river and makes, it for the first time, livable for the citizens.

AREE AGRICOLE

CENTURIAZIONE

WILDFLOWERS

WILDFLOWERS Agricultural areas landlocked between the industrial former area and the river are incorporated into the project , integrated and regolarized . In fact , according to recent archaeological studies , this area was in Roman times the area of a centuriation, the rigid geometric subdivision of the latter is then taken up and used to modulate the cultivated fields . Than, taking a cue from the famous “ flowering of Castelluccio di Norcia “ , not far , it is assumed a possible use of a crop type “ Wildflowers “ , a cultivation of herbaceous species characterized by spontaneous showy blooms that vary throughout the year . Blooms that are very important for the protection of biodiversity , as sought by a large number of species of insects , but also very interesting from the an ornamental and landscape point of view, and then be able to bring people to live these spaces, and not just watching them from afar part.

Vertical Barcelona

Hybrid building reinterpreting a city - Barcelona (Spain) 1.2 Academic/ hybrid program Universidad Politecnica de Madrid ETSAM Escuela Tecnica Superior de Arquitectura 2010 - 2011 Taller de Proyectos IX - Aula PFC Professors: Juan Herreros Guerra, David Archilla Luca Ciliani

The main idea of my project is to transform the traveler into resident , i want to show tourists what they usually do not see, “ the invisible city” . to do that I decided to include in the project those places that usually are not seen, and that even the people who live in Barcelona can’t use: the interior patios of the typical blocks of Barcelona . So tourists , after a tour of the city , will experience those spaces that would never have been able to observe , and those who work there can live those spaces that would have been his right but he has never been able to use . The configuration of the building , its implementation is the result of an investigation into the strong fabric and visible as the Cerdà Plan and the typical isolated of barcelona . Initially I did a study of the provision , the way in which buildings can be configured depending on the circumstances , then I studied the district “ Sagrera ,” which would have to be configured like the rest of the city , with the regular grid of the Plan Cerda , but this has not happened. at this point the idea was to reverse the urban fabric to put it in height . So I decided to use blocks that were missing any items to Sagrera , that is , I calculated how many blocks were placed in the vacuum left by the main railway line, and I have relocated in height, overlapping them .

One interesting thing found during my research, it is what is inside every block, as if they were “ city within the city “ . For Cerdà , the central courtyard was supposed to be a place lived by the people for outdoor activities , but in reality, now it is not, in fact, the courts are almost always spaces used as outbuildings, buildings related to buildings, which house the functions more varied, but always private . So I decided to put the public space , the road (vertical) , is set against the central patio, and from this you can access the different functions that the building houses . but ther’s a difference in size , namely , my project will occupy a square of 42m square , a little less than a typical patio of a block type . After visiting the area , I noticed some features that were not present in the neighborhood and I found several necessary functions , revisited according to the functions that need to belong to my building (hotel, market , spa and rooms for rent ) , led me to ‘ identification of similar functions, but related to the required functions. Then I added these functions in the tower initially placing them in the classic hybrid type , ie single-purpose compartments stacked , and then I added the fabric of the cruciform Plan Creda , thus creating the randomness , the typical variety of the city.

Urban Library

Partial restoration of the ex slaughterhouse - Rome (Italy) 1.2 Academic/ Culture Università degli studi Roma3 Architecture Faculty Corso di laurea magistrale in progettazione architettonica 2011 laboratorio 2M Professor: Paolo Desideri Luca Ciliani, Fabio Balducci, Cristiano Colamarco

The design of this new library is part of the wider redevelopment of the former slaughterhouse in Testaccio in Rome , intervention that already has made several interventions, such as Macro ( Museum of Contemporary Art ), the cultural center Pelanda the market “ city of the economy, “ and the new headquarters of Architecture of the University of Roma Tre . It is in connection with the last one , it has been suggested a further upgrading of one of the pavilions of the former slaughterhouse , to set it up to the university library , with various functions connected with it , such as a conference room, a bookshop and a caffetteria. In this case our team thought it was only fair to give importance to the project in the public space , which in this area is almost non-existent, and where it is present, is definitely of minor quality . To obtain then the public space within the site , which coincided almost specularly with the surface of the existing building , from a point of view of volumetric , we thought of a breakdown and translation of seniority , by a raising of the block of the greater size , where will be located the library, and a lowering of a second block that goes down creating a public square underground , connecting the library to the volume of services ( the bookshop and café ) . The main volume , those prepared for the library ,

was slightly outstanding , and the ground floor houses a large atrium , which can easily be modified to accommodate temporary exhibitions , is fully glazed on all sides to emphasize the suspension of the volume above . The last one is then covered with a perforated metal mesh that disappears at the short sides , which are home to the outdoor reading rooms , and some openings , creating small terraces connected to the reading rooms or offices within the building . The same coating , bending , also covers the lower side of the volume , becoming, in this case, the ceiling of the atrium . Inside the book is divided into three parts: the central area is left completely empty, a space to ceiling characterized by a large -scale central access , and the sides have an area designated for offices and a library and its own true . The latter is in turn constituted by a central volume , which hold the various reading rooms, connected by footbridges to the two sides , which contain compartments of the libraries. The warehouses and parking are located in the basement instead .

Vallecas 2.0

Redevelopment of the neighborhood Puente Vallecas - Madrid (Spain) 1.2 Academic/ Urbanism Universidad Politecnica de Madrid ETSAM Escuela Tecnica Superior de Arquitectura 2010 - 2011 Proyecto Urbano Avanzado Professors: Luis Moya Luca Ciliani, Natalia Sevillano Roman Gomez Published in: URBAN-E

The politics of Social Housing (SH) in the city of Madrid is varied, from the promotion of entire neighborhoods , the promotion of the only buildings of SH . The present case is an exceptional case of SH , which also covers the area . In developing the exercise was very successful partnership of ALS , with the visit of Maria Isabel Muñoz , architect, and the revision of the session that featured Paul Valle, Director of Innovation in construction . Of great interest was the participation of Untercio - architects, who presented three buildings built environment in SH . Regarding the district chosen by the existing plan in 50 years, we have extrapolated the ideas that make up the new proposed action. As appropriate, in most cases , the measures taken in those years , such as adapting to the topography or urban housing defined by the position of the vegetation are still valid. We decided different forms of intervention :such as the perimeter well defined from the surrounding streets , the interior is reflected less restricted and editable. in spite of this we decided to find openings in the perimeter to better connect the interior space with the neighbouring districts . The buildings would be constructed parallel to the contour lines (morphology ) , so as to increase the degree of sustainability of the intervention .

Looking at the power plant ( project by Federico Soriano ) just made , it is in itself a milestone for the district , for which a number of axes which , in addition to being influenced by topography and vegetation, will find their point of reference to centre of this “symbolic building” . It will place particular interest in maintaining the existing vegetation on site, to which the proposal will be configured to ensure the survival of at least 80% of the existing trees , which however will be increased by the new vegetation of the project. The pedestrian axes are oriented to the south, in order to ensure adequate public areas in the park. The proposal suggests an additional control to regulate the volume of residential , raised by a number of requirements that must be met by the private outdoor space , which will largely be landscaped . The vegetation will connect the internal icon with green areas in the proximity of the district , mainly with the park Fofo . Similarly, pedestrian areas should connect with this same park , therefore , not yet found in colonies is understood that the main green area in the living room. As regards the management of the vegetation , this is drawn as a function of the trees , the main element that determines our proposal .

Greener industries

Redevelopment of the industrial area “Padule” - Cascia (Italy)

1.2 Competition/ Urbanism International competition Client: Umbria Region Luca Ciliani, Alessio Patalocco for Studio Alessio Patalocco

The project falls within a call organized by the Umbria Region , which identified four industrial areas to be redeveloped , three of which required an intervention of disused industrial buildings , while the last one of Cascia , required not to act on a single building but on a working industrial area , with serious infrastructure and functional problems and functional (a mixture of industrial, commercial and residential ) , as well as the poor quality aesthetics , despite the proximity to the historical centre of the town itself , which is raised on a hill . Just for this, the industrial area is of poor visual impact if you look at the landscape surrounding the village , a “stain” of built surrounded by nature. Exactly this problem stems from the concept of intervention : trying to bring the vegetation within the area, through various types of interventions , ranging from the type of flooring ( will fit new flooring and drainage) to the green roof , which will cover not only the roofs of the buildings , but also the vertical walls . with regard to vegetation, as well as a shade of the main street , you will use trees to screen the majority of the existing buildings , preventing the view from the city. Some urban voids on the site will present the inclusion of key buildings for a comprehensive redevelopment of the area,

and especially to create a connection, also functional, with the rest of the city through the reorganization of existing campaign paths . the entrances to the parking lots to provide mixed energy storage ( using solar energy and wind power will be able to generate useful energy to various present industries). You then provide the buildings mixed commercial downstairs and upstairs residential , typical of medieval towns such as Cascia , as well as a new sports centre , which will connect and expand existing facilities . Another important intervention relates to water regulation , in fact the area is in a critical area from a hydro geological point of view , as lowest point of the valley to the east of the centre . Knowing it had to change the water system present, we have assumed a new system that provides a recovery of rainwater through changes to the roofs of existing buildings. The gray water are incorporated and then redistributed and reused as residences and industries. The Wastewater produced, coming to be recovered and treated in a special unit , which after being processed, making them available for irrigation of green areas and the sourrounding agricultural areas .

Into The Wild

Aurora Borealis observatory/resort - Rovaniemi (Finland) 1.2 Competition/ Hybrid international competition client: Archmedium Luca Ciliani,Fabio Balducci Dario Emanuele, Cristiano Colamarco

The main reference that inspired the shape of our project is the “Kota”, the traditional tent of Lapps shepherds, the Sami. Referencing the Lapp tent, we decided to divide the building into multiple units to create a more direct contact with nature. A more punctual occupies the empty spaces of the forest, so we don’ t deforest. The different parts(o components) are placed randomly into the project area in order to achieve a non invasive integration in the context. The slope of the site brought us to a slight modification of the basic form of the tent: first we tilted the central axis and then we rotated the envelope on his base creating a more repaired entrance. As a further step each of our objects has been dimensioned according to the different functions they host. Finally we designed two different types of cladding, the top part is glazed to allow the visitors a 360 degrees view. The main idea driving our project is to make visitors live a different experience by creating a strong relation with the landscape around, away from the chaos of the city. To do so we decided to assign every object a function separating the parts of the actual observatory. This type of distribution encourages users to move inside all the area and experience the nature around them. The focus of the project is the largest “Kota”,

thath contains all the common functions, from the reception you are immediately on the ramp that connects the entire building. If you go down on the ramp you can reach the planetarium ,covered with mirrors, so you have a complete internal view and with the reflection it’ s possible to see the Northern Lights also at the bottom. The nature is preserved in the center of the site, so you can enjoy it even when it’s all snowy outside. Going up to the ramp there is the restaurant, and higher, the two points of observatory, but also the ramp itself allows a continuous view of the surrounding landscape at 360 degrees. The suggestion is for experiencing the project not only during the presence of the aurora borealis but also to all hours of every day of the year The basic form of the rooms is a review of the typical Lapp Kota, which however is formed starting from a basic spiral, to create a covered space of entrance, and a zone more closed inside, where to obtain the services (and the fireplace). As cover we used wooden slats for the area at night in order to integrate better with the context, and glass for the top, to allow a good view of aurora.

Azienza agricola Sant’Angelo

Farm Holidays in Umbria - Amelia (Italy) .2.1 On going/ Private Personal Project First fase:2013 Second fase: 2014 (on going) Comm: C&C srl. Arch: Luca Ciliani

The project involves the construction of a farm holydays in the countryside close by the historical center of Amelia, a beautiful village in the south of the Umbria region. The client company wanted to create a new forum in which converge the various functions / productions once scattered throughout the territory. For this reason the project has been divided into various phases of achievements : the first , that one already formed , corresponds to the buildings of the real production . The first buildings constructed are in fact three, two of which were wooden structures , respectively, which are home to a horse farm and a dedicated space in the warehouse, remittance of agricultural vehicles and office. The only building made of brick houses instead of the basement cellars, where is the production of wine farm and home at the same time the technical areas such as the management of the photovoltaic energetic system (installed on the roofs of the wooden structures , grossed classic saddle roof tiles ) and a cistern that stores rainwater from various pitched roofs , the same after being treated gray water can be reused for irrigation of the surrounding fields or vineyards company . the top houses , a multifunctional space , with the ability to accommodate guests or organize various events.

The most important intervention , however, has been the placing of the ground , finding in a territory steep were made important interventions levelling and consolidation of the soil with terraces containment made with large stones embedded to form the walls, without the use of cement mortars . In addition to retaining walls , was made an important system of water regulation , and the construction of a well that allows the irrigation of fields and vegetation. Just as regards the latter , particular attention has been paid to the choice of the plants : for example with regard to the slopes steeper left been identified particular types of shrubs and trees can make the soil more secure and less prone to landslides . Other shrubs instead were chosen for the ability to prevent the formation of weeds ( especially in the cavity between the stones of the walls ) . The next phase of the project involves the expansion of space for events , connected to the outdoor terrace , as well as a new building , “ tower “, which will host the reception rooms of guests , which is the first project that will conclude with the third phase of project ( still under design ) , and that is the part of the farm .

Festarchlab 2012 -2013

International Architecture Festival by GATR - Terni (Italy) 1.2 Realized/ Culture Festarchlab International architecture festival organized by GATR in association whit the magazine ABITARE Luca Ciliani (organizer)

Established on September 24, 2009, the Association of Young Architects of the Province of Terni (GATR) , whose aim is the promotion of quality in architecture, through the organization of moments of meeting , study and debate. - The awareness of architecture by the general public , through the promotion of open debates , popular events , with particular attention to the use of communication forms (textual , graphical , audio-visual ) really open and understandable to non-experts works . - Attention to the work of young professionals through support activities carried out by professional bodies , in particular, through the “ institution of the architecture competition . “ - The development of relationships and the exchange of ideas between architects working in different places and countries , through the organization of events, trips and study visits. Among these , the initiative of great interest and attraction at the international level is definitely the Festarchlab : an architecture festival organized by the GATR and a collaboration with Stefano Boeri , creator of Festarch , and the magazine Abitare. Personally, I am part of the team since 2011 , first as assistant, then move on to the use of real organizer of the festival , holding positions ranging from research sponsors ,

the design and construction of installations, detections of events compatible with the respective themes of the festivals and organize themselves, contacting studios / collectives of architects as guests of the event. In 2012, the theme of the festival offers a reflection on public space as a fundamental element of the city “physical” and the immaterial . The protagonists are collectives that have decided to make architecture together, to focus on the synergy between different skills , ideas, experiences , motivated by the common idea of the necessity of comparison, co-authoring , of witness . Guests of the festival : 72 hours urban action , Orizzontale, Superfluo , metal-mezzadro/orti urbani . The theme of 2013 is instead of the information technology,it is the ratio between the real and the virtual, which is extremely present in our daily lives . Analysis of the potential of the network, on the enjoyment by the city and its relationship with the city material, static and hierarchical . You want to understand how our architects and designers can take advantage of its potential by identifying the revolutionary visions and new priorities that entails. Among the guests : T- Spoon, Italo Rota , Matteo Dondè , Alessio Erioli (Co- de-it ) , and Diaria Project
