“Architecture is a way of organizing what surrounds us and improving the presence of man on earth; it has therefore to establish interacting multiple connections, concerning the control of our physical environment, the institution of definite possibilities of path, the organisation of functions, their integration or their division, their connection.

THE NEW LIBRARY FOR THE A
ARCHITECTURE DEPARTMENT
The theme of this project is the design of a new library for the Architecture department of the University of Cagliari, Sardinia, in the historical quarter of Castello. The intervention area is set in Piazza Mundula, born out of the void left by 1943 bombings, where the Palazzo San Placido used to take place, connected to Palazzo Regio. The goals are preserving both the compact faรงade and the public space of aggregation, the square.
Area: Castello - Cagliari Professor: Marco Lecis Year: 2011 Project Team: Barrili, Cubeddu, Dessรฌ
The proposal of our group for this project has as a first goal the mainteinance of the identity of this square, in order to keep a soft intervention on the social and cultural dynamics of this quarter, resulting in a cohesive project joint with the creation of new necessaries volumes hosting the New Library of the Architecture Department. After defining this projectual criteria, in order to avoid to deprive the area of its characteristics of public and aggregation space, we chose to orientate our project towards the coexistence of public space inside the private one, succeeding in remodeling the space and regaining completeness for the Viceregio
Palace, with the reconstruction of its long lost parts. Planivolumetrico dell’intervento con With this new configuration the square is found on an above ground position from the existing situation, on a partially underground pedestal, an hypogeous space in which take place the library warehouses, the reception and the bookshop. From this pedestal two huge rectangular block are elevated, symmetrical to the square, articulated on three levels, with a heigh equal to the near Viceregio palace, made to give back completeness to the area and hierarchy to the involved buildings. The functional program calls for the realization of a library and a list of spaces for public functions; we

ombre per library, a conference room, a temporary exposition room and a literary cafe. The structure in its complex express an extremely introvertent character. The building is window-free on its main faรงades and is instead completely open in its minor faรงades on which big glass walls bring view; a wide two-levels heigh space brings view on this glass walls and filtrates the natural sunlight of the reading rooms and using a big stairway allows the acquisition of both a social and architectural value and allows to live the space also when the library is off the clock.

RKET IN CAGLIARI The theme of this course has been the urban design, in the shape of a great complexity intervention: the requalification of the biggest indoor fish market in Europe. The project area is set in the quarter of San Benedetto, in the centre of the city of Cagliari. Among the biggest flaws of the building it can be counted the total lacking of communication between the building itself and the context, which leads in fact to the necessity of an intervention on the entire block.
Area: San Benedetto - Cagliari Professor: Nicola Di Battista Year: 2012 Project Team: Cubeddu, DessĂŹ
Once indentified all of the weak point of the structure, but recognising both the historical and social value, the work group committed itself in a complete requalification. For starters, we redeveloped the external looks building a monumental main façade on Via Baccaredda by inserting two towers, which host all the administrative offices of the market and connect the underground parking lots; beyond the functional feature they also have a formal one: they delimitate the market area. By reemploying other four towers, minor sized and connecting vertically the underground parking lots and the
market, we wanted to give a precise identity to that “non-existing-space which now hosts the parking lots; in its place we created two longitudinal axes, parallels to the building, giving them the function of open-air market (already existing, but lacking of regulations, decency and hygene). We devoted the interiors to the study on paths and organization; the axe is still longitudinal but, by using ramps and realizing new work spaces for retailers, we wanted to improve the usability; we also thought of a way to solve the illumination problem: using a skylight for the fish selling area and a
patio to light up both the fruit and vegetables shops and the new restaurants section, in which we made walkable the covering in order to guarantee a panoramic view, oriented towards the Castello quarter, for the users.

MASTERPLAN OF POR
R TA N U O VA ’ S S TAT I O N
Area: Porta Nuova - Torino Professor: Franco Lattes Year: 2013 Project Team: Cubeddu, Pillitu
The subject of the studio is the realisation of a masterplan and bulding in a sustainable key. The complexity is from the project area, which is in the center of Torino. The local administration has presented the intention of ploughing the entire railway trails in the area; therefore the masterplan has to solve the big urban void that this transformation is going to cause. Another peculiar element in this area is given by the contrast between the two quarters on the border of this area: on one side Crocetta, a residential quarter, on the other side San Salvario, the clubs quarter.

A glimmer towards the future The requirement for a stronger sharing has been the guide line of this project, but always without neglecting the traditional housing. The social relationships, way more difficult nowadays with the chaotic context of modern society, find new space inside the new courtyard of the building, a modern reinterpretation of an ancient thought. The new design and functions of the buildings, beyond their target towards energetic sustainability, look for a change in the way that human beings use to connect with each other: cohousing, coworking and interest points connected to ateliers in order to promote and stoke art and culture, this is the proposal for the future.

SPINA4
The project’s subject is a proposal of a new masterplan for the Spina4 area, on the north western area of Torino. The project area embraces two quarters born in the 70s, which are Borgo Aurora and Barriera di Milano. Nowadays these two districts are in a critical degradation state, both physical and social. The interaction between these two quarters grows more difficult with the “trincerone”, a physical barrier. For a better understanding of the social dynamics inside these two quarters a dialogue with local institutions and citizens has been activated, in order to create a masterplan based from residents’ necessities. From here the slogan “SPINA 4: DO THE RIGHT THING”, which implicates that citizens are going to participate the renewal of this part of the city.

In order to foster the mending of urban tissues, the typological choice is on the courtyard building type. The study and reinterpretation of the typology, joint to the use of graded depht, at the end allowed us to guarantee optimal exposition and a view on the park for all of the buildings.
This is a typology of park articulated on terracing which present three different heights: +1,00 m, +2,00 m and +3,00 m. Here we placed the different functions of sport, cultural and musical nature. 0,00 m +1,00 m

NEW OPPORTUNITIES FO
OR THE MASINO CASTLE
Area: Masino - Torino Professor: Carla Bartolozzi, Maria Cristina Boido Marco Roggero Year: 2014 Project Team: Binaggia, Ceretti, Cubeddu, Dervishaj
The subject of this project is the renewal of the Masino Castle, property of the FAI (Italian Fund for the Environment) since 1988. The renewal starts from an accurate study of the land, the castle and the village in which the castle lays. The intervention of the design group is focused on the ancient basements where the wine used to be produced and stored back in time. Following the historical and land analysis we proposed a renewal that aspires to give new value to these places, proposing a taste itinerary of wine produced in loco.
