mills50 art fence AIA florida design competition 2012
the mills50 art fence is an entry for the AIA Florida Emerging Professionals Design Competition 2012. as required by the competition regulations, the focus was on adaptive re-use of areas in need. these included abandoned lots, vacant properties, etc. this project focuses on the mills50 district in Orlando, Florida. the mills50 district is an up and coming district that is in the process of revitalizing itself. it is an area filled with an incredibly diverse range of businesses, artists, land owners, and individuals. the mills50 board of directors has put into effect a series of improvements with aims to, among other things, provide a more pedestrian friendly enviornment. the mills50 art fence speaks directly to this need.
5
the mills 50 district has a problem with parking. when properties become vacant, a common solution to control parking lot use
is to fence off the entry. although this solves the initial problem, it does little to promote the pedestrain-friendly enviornment: a core value of the mills 50 district.

BMWi Tower is a super-tall building proposed for the city of Chicago. A multi-use building functioning as the north american Headquarters for BMWi, BMW’s new electric car division, commercial offices and hotel. as a reflection of the company’s mission to be leaders in the field of sustainability, the BMWi Tower takes full advantage of many available natural resources. these include water, wind energy, solar energy, and natural sky gardens. in addition to these design elements, part of the assignment was to encorporate into our buildings previous findings in the study and exploration of origami and diagrid stuctural systems.

on the university of central florida main campus in Orlando, FL. this building houses design studios, offices, conference rooms, and art galleries. these galleries display art work from svad students including 2D design, 3D design, sculpture, painting, and photography. without exposure, this art work has little opportunity to inspire. the design of this building reflects this need by intigrating the building with existing pedestrian paths. by doing this, the building provides opportunities for people to discover this art work on a casual walk across campus.
31
planning svad
a study of pre-existing pedestrian paths was used to decide key elements of the design including, orientation, shape, location of entrances and circulation paths.

key pedestrian paths are connected by the circulation within the building. by crossing directly through the heart of the building, the art galleries are provided with maximum exposure.

digital fabrications arch pavillion
lucas na jle jennifer aplin thomas peterson
as part of the senior digital fabrications class, the arch pavillion was a group exploration into the fields of parametric modeling and digital fabrications. the project was derived from an initial sketch provided by a student from outside of our group. from this concept sketch, our group was tasked to design and build a structure of our own design that would stay true to the “essence of the sketch. the final project was then located on campus and put on temporary display for interaction from the public.

aias workshops inspiring future architects
it has always been one of my goals to provide younger generations with opportunities to to learn about architecture. the introduction to architecture workshops series gives a group of motivated 5th and 6th grade students a peek into the world of architecture and design. with the help of students at the university of central florida, we have been able to make these events a huge success. by helping with these events, we not only pass on a great amount of knowledge, but we also learn just as much while doing it. both of which are important characteristics of any professional architect. we have created something truly remarkable and have high hopes of seeing this series continue long after my presidency of the american institute of architecture students has come to a close.
55
the intro to architecture workshops are a partnership of ucf aias with art teacher Sandy Bonus, owner of Swoope Studios. ucf architecture students volunteer to teach 5th and 6th graders about architecture. at these workshops, the 5th and 6th graders learn about architectural design principals including: how to communicate using models, drawing techniques, and the relationship between man and the built enviornment.

the higbie kitchen is a kitchen renovation completed in march of 2011. taking advantage of an addition to the house, which included a new formal dining room, the new kitchen was able to expand into the old dining room. responsible for designing the new kitchen, demolishing the old kitchen, coordinating delivery of all new components, building and installation of all new cabinets, assisting electricians, carpenters, and with counter top installation.

master planning shipping container study
a semester long study which ended with the master planning of an entire campus. a key feature of this project was the designing of a monument which would then serve as the centerpiece for another students master plan. an emphasis was placed on the exploration of a shipping containers without the aid of air conditioning to serve as the building block of our buildings.

curves reflecting the occupants as they walk across lets them imagine themselves as the ones providing the guidance for others: a long-term goal of mine
77

79
shipping container study this project focuses on programming the interior of an 8’x8’x10’ shipping container. the regulations allowed for a projection of 6’ on two of the sides of the container. this alteration to the shipping container became the driving force of the design.
81
master plan after switching monuments with a different student, a spa resort was requested as the program for this campus. the concept of the four rivers of eden were adapted from the new student’s monument.
water because of the new monument’s buddhist ties with the cleansing powers of water, being near water at all times was the number one requirement for the resort.
83
central meeting space the intersection of the four rivers is an event to be celebrated. occupants are greeted with a monumental staircase wrapping around the central water feature
85
open air restaurant ground floor houses the kitchen while second floor is an open air restaurant. glass tables and railings allow for unobstructed views of the water feature.
